CPD Quick Hits

A whole passel of police stories in the news today:
  • Chicago police may soon have a new cop to honor as its first officer slain in the line of duty.

    In an about-face from previous police administrations, Supt. Jody Weis has applied to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund to include Constable James Quinn as an in-the-line-of-duty death after he was killed in a seedy part of Chicago in 1853.

    If approved Friday by a "names committee" at the Washington-based memorial foundation, Quinn would bypass Casper Lauer, stabbed to death in 1854, as the first officer killed in the city.

This appears to be the correct decision by J-Fed, but it doesn't begin to balance the scales against what he's done wrong. Don't lose sight of the bigger picture.

***************

One month is not a trend - don't be counting chickens just yet:
  • The city of Chicago - which saw a spike in homicides last year -- recorded 29 percent fewer homicides last month than it did in January 2008, Chicago police said today.

    There were no homicides reported in 13 of the 25 district police districts in the city, the department said.

    Crime decreased in every category last month with the exception of robbery, which increased 1.6 percent.

J-Fed, grasping at any straw he can, is claiming the weather had nothing to do with it:
  • Murders were down a total of about 29 percent, with 34 reported in January 2008 and 24 in January 2009, according to a release from police. Thirteen of 25 police districts reported no murders last month.

    Supt. Jody Weis credited new violence reduction strategies, rather than frigid weather, including implementation of a new Mobile Strike Force, which has been utilized in four districts.

Maybe it didn't. But it was the coldest January in over 10 years. We'd be leery of making any sort of long term projections without taking all factors into consideration. A ten homicide difference is a bad week in North Lawndale/Austin or a really bad weekend in Area 1. Beware of the warming trend this weekend.

***************

Here come the Tahoes:
  • It's a long way from horse-drawn police wagons.

    Before the snow melts this early spring, Chicago police should begin receiving new Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicles (right), part of Supt. Jody Weis' plan to replace the entire fleet of Crown Victorias, the police car of choice for decades.

    The SUVs have been a pet project of Weis' since he took over almost a year ago. In November, the city signed a $59 million contract with suburban Advantage Chevrolet to provide as many as 2,000 Tahoes over the next three years, but given the city's budget woes, it's unclear how many will actually hit the street.
Wait a minute....what was that last line?
  • ...but given the city's budget woes, it's unclear how many will actually hit the street.
Ah yes. The loophole. And this paragraph made us laugh so hard, we hurt something:
  • If Chicago replaces its entire fleet with SUVs, it would be the first big city to do so, although some smaller towns, such as Plano, Texas, have done it. Those towns cite higher resale values and more room for police gear.
Police gear? What police gear? And resale value? We're still waiting to see when someone is going to pick up on the little scam that Fleet has going where they sell damaged squad cars for $100 to connected scrap yards instead of cannibalizing these cars for the thousands of dollars in parts the way the garages used to when the Department ran them.

Criminals, like everyone else, hunker down during bitterly cold periods. Let's see what this nice, warm weekend brings.

Weis blamed last summer's violent crime upsurge on the heat. Yet he denies this little downturn in crime is due to the cold. Maybe his brain has frozen, along with his browline?

Totally agreed upon this, this may be one of the few correct moves J-Fed has made. When he reinstates all the PO's who were unjustly stripped, fired and prosecuted I will regain some faith in him, until then 0's.

Manic depression is a very serious mental illness. One day the individual is KING of the world, the next they are panicky and reclusive.

I believe the Mayor suffers from manic depression. Two days ago all city workers were lazy clock watchers, yesterday they were wonderful employees. He still says that HE pays us.

My God; more bullshit from Weis. I saw him on the news and I wanted to puke. The public really believes this guy. Hmmm, I wonder why he didn't put the agg battery totals for the month or burglary totals. Only put the stats that were down for the month including homicides. Hmmm, like 30 below fucking zero days and and average of single digits for the month didn't have anything to do with the drop in murders. Duh YEAH!!! Mobile strike force made the drop happen. Are fucking kidding me. You know this city and department will never change. Others taking the glory and credit from others stats and hard work. lies lies lies, dog and pony show, smoke and mirrors. Carothers didn’t directly blame Weis, but said past trouble at the Police Department, such as officer abuse under former Supt. Philip J. Cline, eventually become the responsibility of the cop in charge.

This will be the first 4th of July he will wave a flag at because he has always considered this the white man's independence day Hmmmmm.....here we are in a room full of African Americans, quite a few who have benefited from the U.S. government programs and services such as afirmitive action all clapping at this moron. Nothing is ever enough. Clemmons had his own parish and doesn't appear to be in need of anything...the award recipients were all in positions that they obtained through affirmative action and are making some of the higher saleries on the CFD. So will someone explain to me how they can whine about how bad our country is...they seem to be doing just fine here. And pleeeaaaasssee don't start on the slave thing...please enough is enough. Now that we have the black messiah in the oval office, affirmative action should be abolished. According to his people he made it on his own.So if he can do it so can everyone else. The clueless media comparing Chicago to Plano Texas!? Plano is a nice suburban town of about 90 square miles. Remember the show Dallas? The original ranch was in Plano. It's a bigger version of Schaumburg. Plano Texas PD has been awash in money for years, and just lately imposed a hiring freeze. They see snow about as often as we find an honest politician in Illinois. All cars run 10-99. No clout. Good equipment. Good morale. Good training. Good public works department. All in all a very professional PD run by an outstanding chief who worked his way up in the department. (No I'm not the chief but I've met him.)

===========

No. Take the difference (10) and divide it by the 2008 total (34). Here's a quick formula to figure it out:

x = unk% * Original Number

so

10 = unk% * 34

Move the 34 over as dividing INTO the 10 (10/34) and you get 29.41%.

During the hearing, the head of the Chicago Police Department's Internal Affairs Division reported that, in December, computers were stolen from the Bureau of Professional Standards, which is on the fifth floor of Police headquarters at 35th Street and Michigan. The burglary happened just down the hallway from Superintendent Jody Weis' office.

The burglary was revealed as Chairman Ike Carothers grilled Weis about security at the 3rd District station.

But I made sure I watched to see where the unit was and what they did.

In the 15 minutes I was there, there was a parade of at least 8 cars coming in for the same thing...so just how much is this costing the city?

And from how they explained it, it seems like this will be an ongoing parade of the thing not working, and returning for service for the life of the vehicle....WTF?
