A Midlothian teen accused of punching two Chicago cops during the South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade says "don't blame me" for killing the parade.
Speaking Thursday - as the commander in charge of policing 310,000 revelers at the parade detailed a nightmarishly "rough day" for his officers - 17-year-old Gonzalo Vasquez said he plans to attend whatever celebration South Side organizers have next year.
"I was wasted," Vasquez said outside his home in the 14800 block of Lawndale Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

OEMC problems getting worse:
Stacked-up calls to Chicago's 911 emergency center are "disappearing completely" from computer screens because of glitches in a $6 million upgrade to the dispatch system, call takers complained Thursday.
Just last month, Mayor Daley showcased the upgrade, which lets call takers and dispatchers see real-time video from surveillance cameras within 150 feet of any 911 call.
But then problems started cropping up, apparently tied to the servers installed three weeks ago as part of the upgrade. Calls that are "stacked" because police officers are responding to higher-priority calls have been "disappearing completely" from computer screens, sources said.

Another CPS casualty - one year later:
A 15-year-old boy died Thursday after being shot last May on Chicago's South Side, officials said today.
Rakeem Robinson was shot May 30 in the 5200 block of South Calumet Avenue, said Monique Bond, a Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman. Robinson, of the 5700 block of South Indiana Avenue, was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
At the time of the shooting, Robinson was 14 and a student at Dunbar Vocational Career Academy High School on the South Side, Bond said.

A nonsense threat from the Feds:
Newsradio 780 has learned the federal government is threatening to take action against the University of Chicago Medical Center now that investigators have found deficiencies in the emergency room.
This follows the death of an elderly man in the emergency room waiting room last month.
What the federal government is threatening to do is take away the University of Chicago Medical Center's Medicare certification.
- An individual we'll call "Michelle O" is hired by the U of C hospitals for a job so important, that when she leaves it, it sits vacant for a year and is cut from the budget in 2009. For this job, she gets over $100,000 to figure out how to increase minority outreach;
- An individual we'll call "Barack O" is elected to the US Senate and gets a committee assignment that will allow him to direct a number of earmarks totaling over $1 million to the U of C hospitals for all sorts of stuff.
- The U of C, in a completely voluntary sort of way, gives "Michelle O" a raise that triples her salary in a job that is so important, they eliminate it a year later.
- "Barack O" moves on to a better job in charge of all sorts of cool stuff, including the people threatening to take away the U of C Medicare Certification.

I am SO sick of hearing this crap and the stuff along the lines of this. What, is everyone who is white, Irish in your book?

You see, long before I was born almost 40 years ago, everyone claimed that they "were a wee bit irish" when it came to Saint Patrick's Day celebrations and then to the SSI Parade. THAT IS A FACT.
Now that you know what the FACT is, then try to use logic to figure this one out. Of the approximately 50-60 arrests at this years SSI Parade, only 15 were from the 60655/60643 zip codes, that is Mount Greenwood and Beverly.
How many were the "I'm half-Irish" kids from outside of the area? Almost 75% of those locked up were from outside, and of that, I am willing to bet more than 50% of that were not really Irish. Are you willing to bet on that?
So, take your "The Irish cannot act" and shove it up were the sun will not shine. I'm irish, I am well past having my first beer in public and trying to act cool about it, and I am happy the SSI Parade is done. I am ashamed of what it had become from outsiders like you, non-Irish, "Look mom I'm drinking on the street types" who cannot act right in public.
And just so you know, I was a marcher in the first parade way back in 1979, before it became big and BEFORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU came and help ruined it.
But if it keeps a CPD Officer safe and away from punks, drunks, and asswipes like yourself, than again, I am all for it being shut down.

Amen to that! I am with Ben Dover, I bet you the "other" parade, parties, and festivals will not take a real look at themselves and see about "their" problems.
Hell, we can't get the Alderman in this city to require these fuck ups on welfare to take drug tests, deem it too racist, because it would mean looking at "your" people with a critical eye. Heaven knows we do not want people taking personal responsibility for their actions — makes too much sense.

This city needs to evaluate every single neighborhood parade and try to eliminate those with 5 or more arrests. We can celebrate our ethnic heritage with other peaceful and tasteful activities that honor the traditions. Parades are costly in every aspect of operation and ultimately no fun when you have to deal with gang bangers, drunks and massive crowds in tight spaces.

Mostly because people use the ER as their personal physician for non-emergent uses and things get "backed-up" just like our illustrious 911 system. And hospitals don't want to fully staff or can't fully staff the ER's, especially with the nursing shortages.
Whatever the fed is up to is because I'm betting the University cracked down on non-paying customers -- to try to resource them to other hospitals --to lessen their load of non-paying, medicare and medicaid patients. They don't get paid full boat with the government program patient as they do with the insured patient. It's all about $$.

The South Side Irish parade pays for the city services it uses, lets have all of these other festivities that tie down most of the manpower city wide for days (Meixican/Puerto Rican). Did the parade charge an admission fee and fence off the area? If not, why not? Also, if the parade didn't want the "whole world" there, why was the parade heavily publicized in the media? Surely, more people outside the area will attend, if the parade is mentioned "constantly".
I would have to say after attending numerous Southside Irish Parades, that the majority of the drunken foolishness was done by white, Irish, or part-Irish young men, who due to their soft underbellied ancestery, cannot hold their liquor, nor control their urge to be a bully-boys looking for trouble, after consuming some alcohol. Besides, the PR parade takes place in downtown and is very civilized and no problems arise. It is the Humboldt Park FESTIVITIES that is the problem. The parade itself does not march through Humboldt Park.
The problem is the carnival at Humboldt Park, and in the city a yearly carnival large in size and for a week long is always going to attract a bad crowd OF ALL RACES.

Most departments that have pod cameras can access them through each individual squad car computer. CPD doesn't even have the most basic computers in all of there police cars, yet they claim to be one of the the most technological(sp). Now thats why Chicago is the windy city, talking up more than they have!

I called 911 early this morning - heard shots fired either outside my house or at least a block away. The 911 Operator asked me "What is your need for the police?" I said "Uh, there were shots fired". Can someone explain, what I feel, was a stupid question? Maybe I'm missing something or the operators are told to ask?

Nothing makes me laugh more than stupid comments like this! First, if you really believe that the officers looked for a non-irish participant to dirty up, you are part of the problem in this society. Yeah, we go to work every day to look for someone other than our culture to arrest. Second, most white folks (any nationality) I know, want the punks in their neighborhood stopped. They don't excuse their behavior. Their expectations from their children are higher. THE RESULT: much less (not zero) thugs in our communities. Try it! You may be on the road to saving your owwn!
Nobody pays list price at an Illinois hospital as of April 1st - go look up the Fair Billing Act. Insurance companies negotiate rates off list based partially on what Medicare pays. (BTW, Medicare pays faster than any private insurance company -10-14 days compared to 30 days or more.)Second, if UCMC loses Medicare certification - no more teaching, no more research, no more federally-subsidized anything. If they could close their ER, they probably would. UCMC's attempts at following the letter of the EMTALA law rather than the spirit have been pretty lame.
