So Where Do We Go Now?

We had the march - 2,000 plus cops along with 1,600 and more supporters seems to be the consensus. We definitely rattled some cages.

Now what? The next FOP Meeting isn't until 21 April. That's a pretty big gap where we ought to be doing something. Another march? Billboards? Radio ads? We need to keep the message at the top of everybody's mind.

Supposedly, there was to be a negotiating session the day after the march. Any word on if the city re-offered the raise package pulled of the week before? Shortshanks is playing chicken and betting that we're going to fold or lose big. We need to keep him embarrassed and uncomfortable. We need to continue to hammer home the point that other unions got big raises based on the fact that they could strike to bring the city to the table. We need to point out that the aldercreatures voted themselves a huge 6% raise for a part time job. We need to counter the city's contention on a daily basis that we're greedy and we're just looking to cover the city, county and tax hikes we (and every other resident) are forced to endure.

We need Daley to look like this:

Suggestions? We know the FOP monitors the blog, so maybe they'd let us know what they think we ought to do.

Someone suggested taking out full page ads in the newspapers. I like that idea. A lot of people would see it. Other than that I say we march again. This time we get CFD in it as well.

In the interest of fairness, we took the 16% (17% with compounding) that you guys turned down and we have negotiated away our right to strike in our last three contracts (at least). That being said, Go FOP! The better you guys do the better it is for us in 2012, when our current paper is up. Of course, our leadership is very very stupid and accepted those horseshit unpaid furlough days.

At the least, there should have been 2 Informational Pickets planned; the first on 4-2-09 and the second on 4-6-09, while the IOC is still in town.

What big event, for the IOC, is going to be held on Monday? And where?

Given that's it's highly unlikely that a turnout anywhere near Thursday's could be achieved at this late date, when is the next city council meeting to be held? And at what time, on that day, would the city council members be expected to be entering city hall?

Further, picketing city hall on a weekday should begin just before lunch hour and continue well into the rush hours, at least until 5-6pm.

Officers not able to picket should take the time to drive downtown during the picketing and circle the block a few times, honking their horns in support.

Who are the key alderfucks, relevant to the issues at hand? Ie., which alderfucks chair, and are on the committees, that have the 'theoretical' authority to 'do right' by this city's law enforcement/first responder employees?

Where are their ward offices located? Relatively small, (10-20) picket lines could be utilized to picket these in the neighborhood offices when the alderfuck is there.

If it's to be effective, informational picketing isn't an easy or one time only endeavor.

There are few, single event embarrassments big enough to not be totally forgotten after a few days or weeks.

And remember, Daley has no shame.

Only the pressure of consistent, relentless, continuous and irritating public harassment will be successful in stimulating the proper anal sensations in the midget's bung hole.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.

As a police spouse who marched, here's my advice: back off on J-Fed. Not because he doesn't deserve criticism, but because targeting him is diluting our message. If we want a contract, we need to focus on that and hammer the media about that. Airing our other complaints just distracts and confuses people.

Working without a contract (along with Daley's bad faith in negotiating) is a legitimate beef. But when we're carrying signs complaining about J-Fed, who isn't even really involved in negotiations (AFAIK), people just think, "Oh, so they don't like their boss. I don't like mine either. Big deal." Again, I'm not defending J-Fed, just suggesting we focus on getting a fair contract.

The Park District "Highly Suggested" that their employees play basketball on the lake shore, on their own time of course, so the visiting Olympic people would see them at play in Daley's paradise. They even installed nets on the baskets for the occasion. Can anyone remember EVER seeing a net on a lakefront basketball hoop? Not to mention the hurdles prominently on display. Has anyone EVER seen a hurdle on the lakefront? The Daley Crime Family in full bloom. God, how I detest them.

Just slightly off topic:

When Weis came to town he made a vow - to destroy the "Culture of the Chicago Police Department". Dumped everyone with any knowledge and replaced them with triple merit incompetents.
He turned to his buddy Brust and said "Watch this, I'll show them" and had Cozzi indicted.
Created a new organizational structure; 7 Chiefs, 2 1st Deps. etc.

What he destroyed was the MORALE of the finest police department in the nation.

But what he has done is forced our resolve and what he nor the mayor can do, is destroy the camaraderie, the THIN BLUE LINE, that binds us together.

It shined bright yesterday at "Saints for Sara", it shined last week at the march, and it shines as the blue lights and sirens pour into every 10-1.

We are POLICEMAN, you ignorant Fed jagoff. Take off the uniform that I have bled in, that my friends died in.

Friendly reminders should be sent to each and every alderpimp. Nothing outrageous mind you, just a nice reminder that their officers have been without a contract for 21 months.

I know it sounds weak, but every Tuesday every copper should call his alderpimps office and remind them. Then also call the ward offices of the wards you work in.

If you're really smart about it, you'd call from the district desk. Also you might want to think about stopping in to the alderman's office and leave the fine thieves there a little note.

We should have had a week of protests scheduled at different sites to get the Mayor's attention directly. You know, sites where we knew the Mayor would be for maximum attention getting. Who knows what sort of bi-polar drivel would come spewing forth then.

He might start denying there was such a thing as a Chicago Police Department.

I definitely think we ought to do an informational picket regularly until the City gets going seriously on this. Maybe an informational picket by 100-200 or so on the fifth floor of City Hall, picket until we were asked to leave. Do this on a regular basis. Every fucking day if necessary. Something to keep the pressure on that demented stuttering prick.

Leave him out of this at this time.

I think you need some more informational picketing to help your cause. It probably wouldn't hurt to go to the city council meetings. If it is known publicly, Daley might try to stuff the seats that day.

Also going to your FOP meetings. It sounds like you have to let them know you expect them to step up to the plate and do their jobs and represent you.

--I agree. The reason we marched is because of a contract that JFed has nothing to do with. The mayor is holding the ball on that. Stick to the subject which is our pay raise and our benefits.

If there is another march, we should point out in our signs ALL the $ the mayor is spending on other things rather than us. We should point out the raises that the mayor has given to everyone else.

Carry a sign that posts the amount of each aldercreatures salary. Carry a sign that posts the amount the mayor has spent so far on the Olympics.

Change needs to come from within and we should start on three fronts; transparency, leadership, and image.

We, and I mean all city workers and unions, know all too well what goes on in this city. We are on the streets or in the offices and see the level of corruption, waste and mismanagement. The people want transparency, the people want accountability, so let's give it to them.

This blog is a great start. Citizens and the media get a peek behind the curtain, and the minions of the crony machine see how much they are despised. Let's continue giving the public what it wants and deserves. Every time we see one of these mysterious coincidences, lets point it out to the media and to the public. Every time our hands get tied by the very politicians saying we aren't doing enough, let's tell the victims the truth.

JFed is the boss, but he's not a leader. We need to rely on the bosses we know and trust for leadership, even if it means going out of the chain of command. We also need to take up the colors and be leaders for others. A stand was made at the march the likes of which this city has never seen; city workers, unions and concerned citizens standing for all. We must not squander that moment. We join together now, and we respect each other for our decision to work for a city we love. Daley and his minions have divided us too long and this elitism attitude is destroying us. We are not police, fireman or garbage men; we are city workers. That ID card should gain respect no matter what title is on it.

Image is our biggest downfall, and despite JFed wanting to change that, he cannot and will not with his plan. Cozzi is excused in the pursuit of transparency and accountability; instead of changing culture out of want, he changes culture out of fear. He's changed culture alright! No one will do any work because he or she will be thrown under the bus so Daley and JFed can scream "See! We're doing something!" Our culture needs to change, but change comes from within. We step up and make the culture WE want, not wait around to be told how to act. We set the standards with our actions and lead from the front because Daley and JFed are running the other way.

A fellow brother, SEIU73

Throwing you out in front to continuously insult the person(s) you are seeking approval of your demands is absolutely not the answer and will serve to further delay the results you want. By the way, a lot of company's are asking their employees to take pay cuts to avoid layoffs and/or withdrawing matching contributions to 401(k)s or other benefits during this economic downturn. Be thankful for the job security you hold.

You guys have a tough row to hoe. Public support will be a huge part of getting a better contract, but being or appearing belligerent about it is a good way to lose public support.

There is some line that it is best not to cross, but unfortunately no one is real sure where that line is.

CPD does not have a real good rep to begin with and pushing the contract issue in the wrong way might well make it worse.

You need to portray yourselves as dedicated public servants, who have been wronged. You can only be so aggressive about it before you start to look like the bad guys to the public. Informational picketing sounds like a good idea, but to the public at large, it is not all that far from going on strike.

We have NO RETIREE HEALTH CARE after 2015- why work here?? Can't afford to live here, cant send my kid to school here, have deplorable working conditions, a super that hates us, a mob boss for a mayor, and...now... I won't retire with health care? Screw this place. Im testing out...

A thought.... lets go outside the city and picket... springfield, dc, wherever. Another idea... have a mobile picket team... at each homicide, have the team respond (all off duty)... seeing as how each of these mopes is plastered all over the news, we would have to be on the news as well.... After all, failing to invest in a capable police dept. is literally begging for more homicides...

This issue needs to be looked at like a heavy weight fight. Its not over until someone is knocked out or you go 15 rounds. Last week was round 1 so the fight is not over and even if the contract goes to arbitration we still have the right to make it an issue along with many other ills of this city. Daley gets no breaks, he deserves no breaks. He is let off the hook by everyone. The CPD may have to be the ones to speak for those who are afraid to speak against Da Mayo.

4/06/2009 01:56:00 AM

Just slightly off topic:

When Weis came to town he made a vow - to destroy the "Culture of the Chicago Police Department". Dumped everyone with any knowledge and replaced them with triple merit incompetents.
He turned to his buddy Brust and said "Watch this, I'll show them" and had Cozzi indicted.
Created a new organizational structure; 7 Chiefs, 2 1st Deps. etc.

What he destroyed was the MORALE of the finest police department in the nation.

I agree with "retired".
I confess to making the biggest mistake of my career when I supported weis with hopes that this change would be positive.
But instead, this piece of shit ruined my beloved Department and eventually dumped me.

When is the pension board meeting?

That would be another good place to demonstrate.

What the city has done in giving the mayors nephew millions of city pension money is outrageous.

It's your money.

No politician or relative of a politician should have any control whatsoever where that money is invested. That should be law.

A worthy mayor would NEVER allow such a travesty. Just the appearance of such a relationship is so obviously wrong.

Ok, this may seem off the wall but it would get the attention of the people. You can't strike, you can't predict when the entire dept would get the flu, the Mayor is crying poor mouth, well give him the money.

Pick a week, a full week, ticket blitz. Write everything. Cell phone usage, parking tickets, double parkers, valet parkers, speeding tickets, anything within the law.

When the person asks for the "break" tell them with a smile, sorry, the Mayor needs the money plus it is my job.

When the Aldercreatures start screaming to the bosses and the s**t rolls down hill, ask nicely if he is telling you not to do your job.

It might be enough to get the people in such an uproar something might get done.

4/06/2009 12:43:00 AM

Agree totaly, here's some more.

We as protesters need more leader-ship and organization in this protest. We all need to attend the next union meeting or start calling them to get this across. Or start an under ground movement that's not conected to the Union. LIKE A MEMBERSHIP PARTY for DEPARTMENT MEMBERS.

We need to step it up! The mayor threw the first punch with removing an offer on the table. We countered with a very large march. Time to embarrass him publicly, in person, and in his own corrupt hall! Take the fight to him! Every one of these dime store reverends do it and so should we!
A vocal protest in council chambers would send a message to your resident alderthief and Mayor Chuckie! Besides, it would make more free publicity for us on all these lapdog media outlets. The Mayor can't control that!

It would be amazing to see a group of coppers in the gallery at the next council meeting. As soon as it starts we prevent them from conducting business that day. Shouts of "First Called - Last Paid - Contract Now" should be on every coppers lips.

The next meeting of the City Council is scheduled for April 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.

Do you think anyone really gives a flying fuck about the informational picketing when another 660,000 workers lost their jobs in March.

Start watching something other than the Steve Wilkos show and start watching CNBC. Their isn't an arbitrator on the planet that will give us a fair shake with 8.5% unemployment and rising. Now over 30,000,000 people on food stamps and we're screaming, WHERES OUR MONEY?

It's finite numbers people. Get in the game and get your heads out of your asses.

All Lil Caeser did the other day was laugh his balls off. It should have been aimed at the Olympic Committee and their hotel. If you're gonna do it, do it right. Go after the one thing Caeser LOVES the most, his precious olympics.

The Olympic Committee would have been in shock seeing 2000 people picketing in front of their hotel with signs saying Caesar is unfair to his police men and women. Believe me, it would have adversely affected both the committee and Lil Caesar.

Not to mention, if you knock those fucking assinine olympics out, Lil Caeser is left with over 3 billion on th ebooks slated for nothing. Wouldn't have a leg to stand when he's claiming broke in front of an arbirator.

Here's an idea,

When you pull some one over, let them know you DON'T really care to write them a ticket, but you would just like to remind them of the crap that goes on in this city.
Ask them for support. Encourage them to vote--don't get into specifics here, but let them know you're concerned because of all the business that has left the city, county and state. There are a lot of for sale or for rent signs in storefronts these days.

Again, a kind word goes a long way. Sympathize with them and let them know that we too know that times are tough. Send them on their way with a new look at us, and a good feeling of relief. It's a great way to get back on everyone's good side.

Now's the time for us to do our own PSY-OPS. Gain support from the public, then lay the WAMMY on DALEY!!!

I know about cost of living not keeping up etc. I also read the papers and see massive layoffs and a worsening economy. No one but top elected officials in Chicago are keeping up with cost of living. Some departments are seeing freezes, layoffs and are being asked to take pay cuts.

16.1% divided by 5 years equals 3.22% per year. I think that if that raise were to somehow be on the table again it should be accepted. I would prefer the raise equalized across each year of the contract, 3.225 each year, not back end loaded.

I would like more but something is better than less or nothing and all this bitterness going around now is doing none of us any good.

The good things that have been negotiated and are almost there are the alternate work schedule, I don't care which one, any of them is light years better than what we have and retirement at age 55 with free health insurance until Medicare age.

No one is getting free medical insurance at age 55 or any other age these days.

Might be time to adjust our expectations and get this settled and go on to fight the battle again another day in a better economy.

Sounds like heresy I know. I am just trying to consider realistically what might lie ahead. All in all it doesn't sound too bad, all things considered.

Just a thought. A wife who marched with you.

Wife, I think you are on to something. I always said, that if you want attention, this is the way to get it. Maybe along with another good idea, billboards around the city advertising the crackdown. I think you would be surprised at the results. I am afrad that whoever said that the Mayor is laughing at you picketing, is probably correct.

You can't blame Shortshanks for speaking so highly of convicted criminals.
Most of his closest friends fit that profile.

And God willing, so soon will he !!!!!!!

Man. This condo-mania is like a freight train; the wheels are locked up now and you know how it takes miles to stop from all the momentum, but all I'm seeing is failed, half-done, or canceled condo projects, and thousands of unsalable units that were completed. Trees are starting to take hold again in some of these plowed-up lots -- 6060 NW Highway being one.

Is there still enough activity out there to produce changes like this? The yuppers sure aren't flipping houses and buildings like they were. How many of them can there BE -- especially in this depression?

No, No, NO!

I agree, we need to get the mayor's attention, but not by pimping ourselves out and generating more $$$.

I propose we flush all the toilets in every one of our homes in UNISON for King Richard the Second's birthday. He was spawned on April 24th at 04:27 hours. What a forceful message that would be.

The 19th ward needs an alderman who cares about the issues facing her constituents. Innumerable calls and emails to Alderman Rugai's office have gone unanswered. She has yet to stand up and publicly support us and certainly wasn't at the march.
I don't know much about this Somerville that ran against Ginger Rugai the last time she got reelected but I heard he gave her a pretty good run for her money.
We should look into where he stands. If he's for us then maybe we need to throw our support behind him.
Either way it's becoming apparent that Ginger is against us so it's time for her to go!

Anytime there is anyone remotely acceptable running against an incumbent, that's the guy or gal you support.

Hell, at this point, even someone slightly unacceptable is to be preferred to the rascal, motherfucker incumbents.
