What's Missing?
It seems J-Fed is hanging his hat on getting us new vehicles. He was bragging about it in the recent PAX 501 and on WBBM's "At Issue" show. But something seems to be missing....
Oh yeah, gun locks.
So we're going to end up downing these vehicles for how many days to install gun locks and wiring and hope that the batteries and electric systems can take the extra stress, unlike most of the current cars.
What a marvelous feat of planning.

What's missing? The vehicles. We sure haven't seen any.
You notice he talks about ordering vehicles, but he doesn't talk about giving us vehicles. He talked today about how veteran officers hated PDTs and now don't want to go out without one.
What he DIDN'T mention, though, was the fact that there aren't enough functional PDTs to make that happen. About sixty percent of our guys don't have a working PDT on a given day.
He really did sound plausible on the radio. It's a shame the public didn't get to hear an honest rebuttal of his half-truths and semantics games.
J-Fed wants to hang his hat on the new Tahoes? WAIT UNTIL HE SEES HOW MANY TAHOES ARE ROLLED OVER IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OPPERATION! Tahoes are too top heavy.
J-Fed is still batting zero.
The best thing J-Fed could do for us is to resign. Take the $1.000.000.00 and run.
Dumb idea to retire the Crown Vic, it is the only reliable car out there. The new Tahoes SUCK!!! I heard that they were supposed to be 4 wheel drive....NOT! Only 2 wheel drive.
How about the all wheel drive Ford Taurus
They are having issues with the gun locks that have been installed.... apparently the weight of the guns are making the "jimmy rigged" mounting plates come loose.
They are 2 wheel drive so that they can be used as a primary chase vehicle. Read an Order every once in awhile instead of whining on here.
I don't want a Tahoe. It makes no sense to have one in Chicago. Car based police vehicles make more sense.
Hey here is an idea. We have remington 870 shotguns in the stations already. Allow any officer not just tact to go and qualify with one, then allow them to go and purchase one " much less cost than a carbine" then they can customize it the way they want to make it fit their stature and reach. Then allow them to carry it on duty by installing mounting brackets in the car like the ones the suburbs have had for years. This is a proven urban weapon and will at least give us old officers with bad knees a chance to defend ourselves until the young super hair gell police show up and save us.
At the time the Tahoe order was placed the department was down about 420 cars. Fleet had ordered 380 Ford Crown Victorias from Sutton Ford. That Ford order was cancelled when j-fed insisted on Tahoes. Fleet then ordered 180 Tahoes. It has been about a year and the first of the Tahoes are arriving at the 52nd & Wentworth garage at the rate of six per day. However, because of the shortage of QUALIFIED manpower only one Tahoe per day can be upfitted for service. Expect it to be at least another six months before all 180 Tahoes are up and in service. Do not expect to see a dramatic decrease in vehicle shortages though. Instead of fleet assigning the Tahoes for cars owed they are trading them for fifty & sixty thousand mile cars to make pool cars out of. The shortages and incompetence at fleet management will continue and the officers in the streets will be the ones to suffer.
I listened to that show on the way to church and couldn't believe what I was hearing. It seems that I live in a "neighborhood" and my fellow black officers who happen to reside in Chatham, Roseland, etc. live in "ZONES" according to Weis. Isert foot in mouth, AGAIN. He kept going on saying something along the lines of 'targeting the zones that have a high propensity for crime' with mobile units.
How about the Ford Explorers to be built in Chicago?
I haven't see one new truck? Where are the new cars? Can someone verify they exist? Of course there are no rifle racks. The department doesn't have any. They are broke. Did you really think we would have racks for rifles?
Tahoes are great. All of you with teh roll over/top heavy comments. ....They have a pursuit package on them that lowers there center of gravity and also extends thier wheel base. Anyone bitching about these new trucks......besides not having on the street yet.......Can push my car with 187,000 miles in which the heat has 1 speed and the ac doesn't work. The rear window doesn't work either and the heater core is leaking inside the car. These Tahoes if we get them will be a nice piece of machinery and a welcomed upgrade if they ever make it to us. In case anyone hasn't noticed you ain't gonna get a chance to pursue a criminal anyways. A supervisor will terminate before you get a block so who really cares. I for one am looking forward to getting mine......EVENTUALLY

How about how many cars will be held down on flat tires until the R-man shows up to change it. Per G.O. you cannot change a tire on a squadrol or S.U.V.
if you listen to his interview he sounds like someone that is hurt that the police officers do not like him he is trying to be liked by everyone unfortunately that is not going to happen. what he should worry about is the fact that he is an outsider and therefore he will never be accepted and if he had the balls he would say fuck it i was brought here to do a job whether im liked on disliked im going to get it done. instead he has become a politician, plays into the media, he should keep his mouth shut and eyes and ear open to really see whats going on out here on the streets. he doesnt reall know what we go thru each day and night out here because he has never been the police. forget the tahoes, pdts, getting mette back his job and assigning him to his pet project like he said on the air the mobile strike force. i applaud the fact that he was instrumental in getting mette out but please give me a break. stop talking to the media and focus on the officers that sacrifice themselves out here. stop promoting and listening to people that do not know anything and remember you are not the police nor will you ever be. enough said.........
Anyone notice the serious design flaw in the new Tahoes concerning the cage? The gap on each side of the cage partition is wide enough for a whole ARM to fit thru and grab the driver or passenger in the front seat! And what did they do to correct this gap? The installed FLIMSY plastic secured with VELCRO- that's right- VELCRO!
FLOP was notified and didn't seem very interested. I know of officers who have sent a to-from to FOP notifying them of the safety issue.
In the meantime, boys and girls, be careful if you choose to transport anyone in the rear of your new Tahoe. Always handcuff anyone in your backseat, but we all know that some skinny crack-heads can get those cuffs in front of themselves. I swear, the gap is large enough for 2 skinny arms to poke thru and harm or annoy the POs in the front.
We should all be writing To-froms regarding this serious safety issue.

Maybe a safe driving course is in order. I have driven Tahoes many times and never even came close to rolling one. Its not as if CPD has a whole lot of high speed pursuits where it might be an issue. I would bet the squads with 200k miles on them are more dangerous than a Tahoe.
The Tahoe uses a lot of gas, so how much of our budget will go for fuel instead of salaries? After all, while we have money for 2016, the police budget is supposedly straining the city. And we aren't permitted to do vehicle pursuits in SUVs. Oh wait, I forgot, we can't do vehicle pursuits anymore.
I downed my car for brakes and it's been gone a week! Last I heard brake job takes 3-4 hrs.
The Fop needs to make everything public. The real crime stats, the criminals police record especially when the news media and his mamma say what a good boy he was. All the illegal activity by the mayor, the lack of police equipment, how the radio zones go down on a regular basis, how bad the computer equip. is etc, etc, etc... If somebody in the FOP wants to make a name for themselfs that's how to do it. I'll be glad to pay more in dues in order for the FOP to take out weekly ads in the paper or whatever outlet they think will reach the most people. Just an idea from a flatfoot.
not only are the new tahoes two wheeldrive, but they are rear whee drive. I can't wait until the first snow. Squad order me a tow, my tahoe is stuck.
The cage on our Tahoe's is majorly flawed. There is a large space on the upper corners of the cage seperating them from us. This space is covered by a flimsy piece of plastic held in place with velcro! This space is big enough for any animal to reach thru and choke you, hit you, kick you. There are probably some skinny crackheads who could sneak thru. The back of the cage is just like the chain link "dog cage" found in many commercial station wagons. There is enough space to throw any object into the rear trunk, or spit on your bag back there,or reach in and grab your stuff. So cuff everyone who goes back there! But, they have a radio.

Prepare a to-from report and forward the to-from to your Unit Rep and demand that a safety complaint be completed and filed on each issue.
Each and every safety complaint from each officer should be cause for a safety complaint to be filed by the Unit Rep. Unit Reps should do this for any officer who requests it. Failure to do so is cause for a complaint, call Rich Aguilar at 312-733-7776 if a Unit Rep blows you off on a safety complaint.

That was just changed via teletype. The vehicle operator is now responsible for changing the tires on the new SUVs.
3 tact cars from my District have been sent back to Area 1 to have the gun mounts reinstalled after they completely fell out, Good Job Goofwrench. These GED Mechanics tried to blame the officers, Said we ripped them out, I pled my case to the only guy in a tie and all 3 mechanics standing at the trunk of the car came to the same conclusion ......... TOM. Tom who ever you are Thanks for proving to me that the POLICE are not the only department entrusting their latest and greatest ideas to the most incompitant people.

hope the get a flat with all the potholes daley cannot repair, oh no summer time and a "wretched back" time for a massage thanks richie criminal mastermind!
As usual fleet knows absolutely nothing about managing a POLICE FLEET a tern they nothing about. As there top heavy crap TAHOE's are put into service they should be sent to DISTRICTS to replace vehicle removed from service. By replacing downed cars fleet would get back their pool vehicles, and perhaps have some available. District Commanders should also realize it up to them where they assign a particular vehicle assigned to their District.
FLEET is SO STUPID, they have no one available to prepare the new vehicles for service, so pool vehicles will continue to be scarse.
SOLUTION: Bring back an experienced POLICE FLEET manager
there was never a pool shotage when the Department managed the fleet because they knew police priorities and seasonal demands. Fleet managers are currently patronage hacks who should be picking up paper with a pointed stick in a park someplace.
