Pittsburgh Loses 3 Cops

  • PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday morning, killing three of them, before barricading himself in the home, a police official said.

Three officers were killed, said a police official at the scene who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

At least five officers were wounded, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. It's not clear if that included the slain officers.
Thoughts and prayers for Pittsburgh only in this thread.

UPDATE: Thoughts and prayers ONLY - we had to delete a lot of stuff that wasn't really appropriate for this remembrance thread. Please, we have hundreds of other open posts - use those to rant.

I am not a police officer. I am a firefighter, but the deaths of these police officers really breaks my heart. I know it sounds like a cliche that the police are the only line between us and these criminal savages, but it is true. The horrible murders in Oakland and now in Pittsburgh drive this point painfully home. I dont need to explain to you that someone who has enough balls to shoot a police officer, would shoot anybody. I work in the southern suburbs east of I-57 and I have a good idea what happens when people don't respect law enforcement. The complete and utter respect for life is astounding and frankly frightening at times. I will close by expressing my sincere condolences to all members of the law enforcement family who lost three of their members today.

The three Pittsburgh P.D. officers were slain during a 4 hour standoff which began as a "domestic" at about 7 AM (EDT) this morning.
An estimated 75-80 shots were fired. This occurred at 1016 Fairfield St. in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

The shooter, Richard POPLAWSKI (M/2/23) is now in custody at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with unknown injuries. His weapons included an AK-47 assault rifle.

Again...what can you say to the families, friends, co-workers and the Pittsburgh Police department? I am so sorry for the loss of your loved ones. This is starting to get out of hand...the law enforcement community is starting to lose officers 3-4 at a time. It can happen anywhere and at anytime. Stay on your toes and be aware. The problem is, that if someone is hell bent on hurting the police, they can be waiting for an ambush on the police and you may never see it coming. This is not an office job(for most of us at least) and obviously has the potential for very bad things to happen. You never know when your card is coming up, so, give the family a kiss or hug before you leave for your tour and maybe a phone call so that they know you are thinking about them...you never know when the opportunity for that might end. I hope that the Heroes families and the Pittsburgh Police family can recover and somehow find the strength to move forward, yet always remember the sacrifice that these officers made as well as their families. It is a sacrifice for any officers families everytime they put on the uniform because even though they don't always think about it, they know deep in their hearts that a tragedy like this is ALWAYS a possibility. Be strong Pittsburgh Police family, we will help you mourn in this time of pain. God Bless!

RIP Brothers
When God made the police officer.

When the Lord was creating the police officer, he was into his sixth day
of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of
fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?

A police officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark,
scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch,
and not wrinkle his uniform."

"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout,
cover a homicide scene that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses,
and testify in court the next day."

He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black
coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands. < BR>>
" The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no
way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's
the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before
he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?"

(When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.)

"Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety.

And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a
bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right.'
when he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this
tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250
pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five
on a
civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the police officer very slowly,
"Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet," said the Lord.

"It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings
in its sleep;
detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in
less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...
and still it keeps its sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control.

He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a
child abuser,
comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law
enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the
officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced.

"I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the lord, "it's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to
that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."

"The tear... God you're a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there."

I am a P.O. who just retired. I thank the Good Shepard for keeping me safe for all of those 29 years.

Now my son is a patrolman in Tampa, Florida. In my day, people may have not liked the police, but they at least gave you a little bit of respect. And people thought twice about fighting you too.

Now, people don't care. To some people that badge and gun doesn't mean squat. They will KILL YOU and not even think twice about it.

Whatever call you go on, be careful, and if you need another car, then for God's sake, get on the radio and ask for another car. That is what your brothers are there for. To my police family in Pittsburgh, I send my deepest sympathy and God speed.

For us, Police Officers, working midnight shifts, we 've responded and heard the most BS Domestic calls whether it's 3am or 7 am. I know that sometimes we let our guard down going to these calls i.e. tucking our hands inside our vest, standing in front of the doorway, and not controlling the Subject. We sometimes assumed that this is another " Babby Mamma Drama", but please, keep in mind that Domestic Disturbance is considered one of the most dangerous call.

Our deepest condolences goes out to the slain Pittsburgh, PA, Oakland, CA and Binghampton, NY Police Officers families and keep them in your prayers. And May these BRAVE Police Officers' souls Rest In Peace.

I was one of the POs who went to Oakland. It was an incredible opportunity and I thank the powers that be for allowing me to be a part of it.

I am planning on going to Pittsburgh, even if the City doesn't allow us to use cars this time. With such a short distance to drive to PA, I highly recommend anyone who can take the time to do it.

The Chicago Police are revered nationwide as one of the best (if not the best) law enforcement agencies. The POs, the families, and every person who saw us in our blues constantly repeated how meaningful it was for us to make the drive and could not stop thanking us.

Again, I highly suggest anyone who has the time to make the trip. You will not regret it.

As a police wife, I am wondering if it is realistic to wait for a back up. With the manpower the way it is and the department the way it is, how many of you truly will wait for a back up? Also the stigma that goes with asking for a back up needs to stop. Before you go to that next call 99, step back and think "Is going 99 worth losing my life over, or is asking for a back up and waiting for one worth me living?" Please do not go on these calls alone. Don't leave more what if's than necessary in the event of your tragic death. The department does not care about your safety. All of you need to stick together and care about each other, no one else will-not the public, not the media, not anyone but your family and each other. The people you are trying to save are sometimes just not worth dying for. I never thought I would feel like this as a police wife but I wish my husband would do the minimum except when it came to a fellow officer. Stay safe in numbers.

Hey F.O.P.

Did you forget members of the P.P.D. are F.O.P. members.

My point is get a bus and transport a crew over to honor our brothers. It does not matter PPD is FOP, they are like kin to us.

Skip the b.s. picnic, & fishing b.s. and do the right thing already with OUR $$$ !!!

Fuck our brass if we are not allowed to send a squad there. In this city, millions are stolen and not a word of condolances from our idiot mayor to the PPD.

He is to busy up Oprahs ass !

To the liberal left, we in L.E. are worse then dog shit to them.
