Can You Hear Us Now?

If you read the WBBM or Channel 2 websites, they've taken to quoting the blog at length, actually naming the site and linking to it.
  • The blog Second City Cop, which his written by Chicago Police officers, has extensively discussed the picket.

    The blog indicated that the picket has widespread support among officers, and that the National and State FOP Lodges had also pledged support, with scheduled appearances by National FOP President Chuck Canterbury and State FOP President Ted Street.

  • Second City Cop said signs were being provided, but suggested that officers might also bring some other signs that family members could carry.

    "Something like "My Daddy needs a Contract" will almost guarantee your kid face time on TV and will bring home the point that we've been trying to raise families in this city for the past two years while the aldercreatures and their staffs got large raises and the other unions got better than average offers in return for ten years of labor peace," Second City Cop wrote on Monday.
They even quoted the word "aldercreatures." Mike Royko is laughing his ass off somewhere. A-freaking-mazing. We had some 16,000 visits yesterday with 26,000 page views. That's pretty insignificant or so we've been told by somebody. Whatever.

But we'd like to deflect most of the credit and point out a bunch of people who really made a lot of this possible with their unending support and willingness to lay it out there when it needed to be done:
  • First up, although we dislike a vast majority of them, the media. Without their reporting Daley's tirades and asinine quote, we'd have a hard time generating outrage;
  • The FOP. We disagree on many issues. But like it or not, they are the public face of the rank and file. SCC isn't going out and spending money on signs or providing buses or putting their face on camera. We couldn't function like that. Maybe the blog provided the impetus, maybe not. We are merely a medium to communicate unedited raw emotion.
  • Each and every officer who made it their business to show up Thursday. The naysayers, the mayor, the media were all wrong when they said we wouldn't show up. That we weren't willing to buck Shortshanks. That we couldn't get it together
And special thanks to the following:
  • Our civilian supporters. Office workers in the Loop. Passersby and non-cops who care about this city the way that we do;
  • The retirees. It was damn good to see a lot of you there, shaking hands, renewing acquaintances, telling war stories. We miss you guys, now more than ever;
  • Off-duty CFD. Your union didn't want to come, but you know better. We're in this together and we'd do better together;
  • Mancow, who came down and marched among us. Love him or hate him, we need support and he's got a 50,000 watt transmitter that reaches a bunch of people we can use;
  • The head of the Chicago Teachers Union marched. The drivers for Ozinga Concrete blew the airhorns on and off all morning. We're sure there were others we didn't see and our readers will point them out in the comment section later. But thanks!
  • The sky pilots, Nangle and Wolf. We've had minor disagreements with Nangle about the content that appears here occasionally. But both Nangle and Wolf are class acts that rise above the fray and care more about the men and women of this Department than many people do;
  • Rosanna Pulido, Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District. What a kick in the teeth it would be for a Republican to win Rahm Emmanuel's old seat. We don't care if she's not your typical candidate. She was there. Quigley wasn't. What does that tell you?
  • There were two aldercreatures there. Allen and Waguespack. Both represent Wards with pretty heavy concentrations of City workers. While we've called the entire City Council to task and advocated the elimination of half their jobs and much of their salaries, well just say you've got a long way to go to earn our thanks. This might be a start;
  • The bosses who spoke words of encouragement to the marchers. We know you had to do most of it out of the sides of your mouths lest you piss off the dwarf and his tools, but at least you weren't writing down the beat tag numbers of a Special Employment car that drove by to blow their horn and then get on your phone to call in the numbers like a certain Sergeant Deputy did.
Again, we salute you all for the fantastic job today.

Amen to your post, SCC. They've become so accustomed to walking all over us and wiping their muddy boots on us, too, that they really thought nobody would show up.

Betcha the mayor's head is about to explode.

I can hear the retaliation coming around the bend. It should hit us the day after the IOC leaves town. Watch your backs, everyone, but don't waver in your resolve.

Well done, SCC.

AS much as I have seen and as cynical as I am I can still be amazed. How does this guy Keating walk upright with no backbone? He is like the kid who tells on everyone and reminds the teacher that they forgot to give out homework. Maybe at the next march instead of honking someone can run him over. Is it worth the 30 pieces of silver to be despised by all of us. You are a toady and a disgrace to the uniform and we will see you ridden out on the horse you came in on.

I am dying to see how Crain's Chicago Business Journal writes the protest rally up.

We know how they shill for the interests of the select handful of wealthy elitists running Chicago.

There is nothing worse than the posh, ultra-liberal, leftist snobs looking with contempt upon the everyday working man.

We should redistribute all the wealth except ours, of course.

A day of mayhem and societal discord will make these misguided fools appreciate the daily efforts of the police.

Earlier Thursday, organizers estimated about 3,000 Chicago police officers circled City Hall and chanted, objecting to recent actions in contract negotiations.

While union officials would not say they planned the protest to coincide with the IOC delegation's arrival, the message was implied everywhere and officers participating said it helped the cause.

Several officers wore black T-shirts featuring white chalk outlines of bodies and "Chicago 2016" written underneath. Another had handcuffs in the shape of the Olympic rings. Other protesters criticized city officials; one sign read "Daley Unfair. No Games."

The city's police officers have worked without a contract since June 2007.

I would like to salute you as the impetus and main driving force behind the success of this march. Never ever sell your soul out like the mainstream media has. The media was once a powerful tool used against oppression. Now it is a tool of the oppressor. Just look at the Soviet Union and how they transformed their main newspaper "Pravda" which translated means "truth" into nothing more than a propaganda tool of the government. Our newspapers and mainstream media are capable of reporting only half truths at best. They are such whores that the founding fathers of our country would be turning over in their graves if they knew what the press has become. This blog, SCC, is the closet resemblance or facsimile to true freedom of the press that this country is ever going to see. You are truly a beacon of light cutting like a laser beam through all the bullshit being spoon-fed to us by the powers that be. I wouldnt be surprised if Mayor shortshanks and his asshole minions put a price on your head in terms of trying to shut you down. Stay strong and never waver because you are such a comfort to so many of us who do not have a voice in this cesspool of lies spread by so many in the mainstream media. You are loved by so many who are seekers of the truth!

Civilian Post---

As for the horn blowing special employment car...The car wasn't blowing its horn in support, actually, I, a civilian, had accidently stepped out into traffic to walk around the thousands of protesters at City Hall and they were just "avoiding an imminent collision".
Since I'm kind of an old guy however, I forgot exactly where that happened and what time that happened, if I remebered that I would fill out a compliment form on the police website to thank the officers for their quick thinking in alerting me to the danger i was in.

Daley likely had nothing to do with the timing of the Blago indictment. Fitzie was down to two days left to indict the ex Governor or he'd have to start all over again. Those of you who think Fitzgerald is in Daley's pocket look at some of the recent convictions. They are getting closer to the little man himself. Now if no one rolls they may never get there, but right now Daley has the feds so far up his ass he can taste the Brylcreem.

Then watch Daley mention his nearly dead 30 years son and start crying or using his wife's illness as a shield.

I just recieved an email from my sister that was sent from 19th ward Ginger's office asking for retired or active off duty Police Officers to volunteer at the 10th annual Breast Cancer walk next Sunday. This is one of the greatest causes I can think of. However, it galls me that this women refuses to back us in contract talks with the city but puts this request out there in cyberspace for all to read in a possible attempt to make us look bad if we reject the call for help. Don't fall for the bait. This is about life and death and we should always take the high road. Think of your Mom, Wife, Daughter ect.

After the event we could send her a message loud and clear by marching on her office or home.

A great turnout, boys and girls.

Hey, Mayor Shortshanks, are you listening? You play such an evil game of politics, but hopefully you misdeeds will be catching up with you.

How you have the audacity to say to us "get real" is such a gradiose, narcissistic comment that it is amazing you are not in a mental hospital. We see "real" six days in a row and then have to work a "real" seventh day just so we can keep our heads above water because of the siphoning off of our salaries to pay yourself and your cronies with our taxes.

The day of reckoning is getting close Shortshanks and you are beginning to lose control of your imaginary kingdom.

There could be more protests like yesterday in the works. I would love to watch your head spin when that happens. I would give back my duty availability and uniform checks just to be the one to slap the cuffs on you when the time comes.

NEWS BLACKOUT: ?

I've noticed that on all of the computer's AP "news sites" off of the tool bar ie.: Trib, Sun T's, Southtown,Wgn, WGN videos that not one story appears in re the Chicago Police Picket "Pro-Contract".

Not one mention in all of the scroll down "news headliners" as well.

I am truly amazed that Chicago, a city with the highest of homicide rates in the year 2009, is not considered newsworthy when it's rank and file protest Chicago's City Hall with over 25% of it's "contracted",actually (non-contracted), work force.

Yet, when one officer is accused or alledged to have been found in error, out of thousands (in excess of 7000), it is always printable.

Example: see Tribune 3 April 2009.
One photo showing protesting P/Os with an erroneous tag line.(left page) But on the adjoining page immediately to the right of the photo, a full story about the "one" reportedly "rogue"
po.

There is an obvious imbalance in reporting the actions of the members of the Chicago Police Department.

One cannot be more significant that thousands (right Jody?)

I suggest that it comes from a higher censor than just shortshanks,(thanks J. Kass) perhaps the quest for the Olympic bid is moving along with assistance from DC?

Disinformation and spin doctors have always been a ploy of the Washington set and the propaganda
mongers.

A major city with 25% of it's police force protesting unfair treatment from it's mayor along with a no confidence showing toward it's superintendent IS NEWS.

It's National News, Associated Press News in my opinion. But then, I only read the news as presented, readers only see what they're fed.

My spin???
something stinks

Please dont forget too about the civilain calltakers dispatchers who toil away in obscurity at oemc. Like you, they have been working since june 07 wo a contract and have been dismissed and disrespected too. Like cpd, they work understaffed, mismanaged, with outdated equipment and are, for the most part, ruled by incompetents. Although cpd and oemc may occasionally be at odds w one another the agencies are linked irrevocably. Oemc stands firmly behind the cpd.

You know, my feeling is that she has more problems than lack of support for the current issues. Felmale Retirees and/or male retirees' spouses,under the curent PPO insurance plan, get absolutely NO insurance benefits for annual mammograms! Despite the fact that insurance companies are MANDATED to provide some reimbursement - our city has used the loophole of "self insured" to NOT pay anything for a annual mammogram. And this alderwoman KNOWS this due to numerous letters and complaints from retirees - so I say - the hell with her pet project - breast cancer walks are a noble cause but affordable preventative measures are just as important - she should step up.

1. The Beverly Breast cancer walk is always on Mother's Day so...nice try.

2. Breast cancer research will go on without the support of the CPD providing free traffic support and crowd control. The line has been drawn in the sand. Stay on the right side. I'd rather you support my husband than your Alderwoman.

They don't make them like that anymore. Why isn't our FOP on television everytime city hall steps on their toes?

Young people today are soft. You have to fight fire with fire. That's why it has all come to this. Thieving bastards all being investigated or incarcerated.

If you speak the truth. If you have a cause. Goddamit, stand up and be counted. Fight. Open your mouth and be heard for Christ sake. My generation did all the heavy lifting. What happened to all you kids? College take the spunk out of you.

We need scrappers! It's on you kids now. We did our part. Didn't we teach you anything? Most of you had grandparents from the old country. Did you forget the stories they told you?

You create your destiny. Mayor Daley doesn't give it to you.

Kugelman is a nice guy but he was not running Local 2 at the time of the strike in 1980. More stupid incorrect shit read on here and here is the truth: FOP is not a union, Sgts and above had no choice but to leave the FOP because the members voted no Supervisors to be in FOP Lodge 7 bargaining unit and the FOP Lodge 7 could no longer represent Sgts and above.
