Media Follows Blog Lead
Channel 5 did something last night we never would have believed if we hadn't seen it with our own eyes. They ran this picture at the tail end of a story:
This is the gangbanger who was found beaten, shot to death and then burned in a gangway on the south side, miles from his territory. The family immediately set out to sanctify the victim, painting him as a good boy who hadn't attended school in nine months, but was about to turn it all around and who would never ever run around with a gang. They forgot to shut down his MySpace account though, and we were able to save the incriminating evidence that gave lie to their entire tall tale.
But we never imagined an actual media outlet would broadcast something that was so obviously at odds with the "poor honor student" narrative they've been pushing for the past few weeks. It's like we woke up in Bizarro World.
Next thing you know, they might actually mention the aldercreatures 6% pay raise for a part-time, $120,000 a year job, or the brewing pension scandal, or the money Shortshanks has been bleeding away for decades.

Actually, I'm happy to report that NBC5 had the story on their 4:30 PM broadcast on Thursday and actually put up the kids MySpace photo. You know, the one with him flashing gang signs, (no doubt culled from SCC's 05 May 09 post). They referred to it as from his FaceBook page.
I was shocked to see it front and center on my tv screen but as they showed the photo, they said his family denies he was in a gang. As I watched, it was almost as if they were calling the family liars by presenting evidence to the contrary!
Later broadcasts on NBC5 carried the same story but eliminated the showing of the gang photo, undoubtedly due to public pressure.

At the Area 5 CAR meeting, Friday I heard something from Peterson that was shocking..."Commanders, Deputies, and other exempts, tell your supervisors to back them 100% when they are right, actually back them when 100% when they are wrong. We need to step up support for our people"!!!!! I was pretty shocked, having never met the man, his comments were hopefully a step in the right direction.. The funniest thing was the look on Brusts face when he said it, I swear the voice in brusts head was saying, " what you talking about willis?"
Of course a few minutes later, Dugan put things back into reality...Commander of 25, I think Lopez, was on the hot seat. They wanted to know why arrests and contact cards were down for April. Lopez related he had 15 people on furlough, Dugan replied, "for operational needs you can change their furloughs". Lopez replied, sir they have a contract, at which point Dugan interrupted,PER OPERATIONAL NEEDS, you can change their furlough" Dugan closed his little notebook, and the next topic was discussed. Lopez knew that was an un winnable battle...
Tell you what their Doogie, go ahead and let the 5yr guy on tact change from a 4b to 7b and quote operational needs, and you better bet me and my 6yrs will grieve it because i wasnt offered to fill in for tact or change my furlough as the person with less seniority was..."The operational needs have to be acknowledged by the Supt and the mayor in writing that a serious emergency condition exists"...But knowing Dugan he will pull some obscure passage from an order or the contract and show he is right...Instead of using common sense and understanding furloughs are part of the job....

Could you PLEASE run an announcement notifying all P/O s who have pension credit from previous employment, that the FOP is having a workshop on Thursday, June 4th at FOP to determine the possible remedies available for the purchase of that time.
At Thursday's pension board meeting, some "credit for other service" was approved for Cook County time ONLY, but denied for other State, Federal and local municipalities.
SCC, it is very important to drive this point home with pension issues becoming very popular with the press ( Mayor Daley's nephew VANECKO).
Please help the other P/O's (approx. 400 ) who have been denied under 5-214 pension rules for the purchase of credit.
Attorney KUGLER for the pension board is arbitrarily allowing cases to be approved.
PLEASE send a strong message as to the unfair treatment of P/O's by the pension board and Kugler.
They may finally have turned a corner. How long ago did you run this and they are only now putting that information out? How many other gang bangers did they let off the hook with their graduation pictures from "afe" grade instead of their mug shots or gang shots from myspace?

1. A 30-year-old Chicago man was fatally shot and two of his brothers were shot but survived Saturday evening on the South Side.
The shootings occurred on the 10500block of South Indiana Avenue at about 11 p.m., a few doors away from the home of the fatal gunshot victim, Desmond Stanbury.
2. A 28-year-old Southeast Side man was killed late Saturday after being shot several times as he sat outside his home.
Shannon Wilson, of the 900 block of East 104th Street, was shot in the back, neck, torso and chest at about 10:52 p.m., police said.
3. Chicago police are investigating the killing of a 26-year-old Chicago man in a drive-by shooting in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
4. Two men were killed early today and another man was shot in the leg after they were involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown shooter, police said.
Police said the shootings happened on the 1100 block of North Kildare Avenue on the West Side in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood.
5. A 34-year-old man was killed overnight on the Near West Side in what police are calling a drive-by shooting.
Randall Ewing, of the 9900 block of South Throop Street, was shot at about 3 a.m. on the 900 block of West Lake Street in the West Town neighborhood

Peterson isn't a bad guy to work for. He huffs and puffs and yells but in the end he does the right thing. Now I don't know about this Dugan guy, I hear people say he isn't a bad guy but to make a stupid statement shows that he has no idea how our contract works and what kind of can of worms he is opening. Why will the department come out and say what a great jopb the ALDI security guard did in shooting an armed man who pointed at him (Sun Times)but never say that when we shoot someone? Where was that Aldi -- 63rd and Cottage? It needs not just guards, but armed guards. Gun battles! That's kinda abnormal. Christ Jesus, you'd think it was the Federal Reserve. It's a grocery store.
There are other Aldi stores in other areas that not only don't have guards, but the bathrooms aren't even locked. Anyone can just walk right in, like human beings lived around there or something.

Good. TV news tends to only hit the top two or three shootings -- say if a belt-fed machine gun was used and the whole street is blue lights for the cameras -- and ignore the rest.

When a lot of you smart kids were in college, us dummies were working for the sheriffs dept. while we waited for years to get called for CPD. The pay was horseshit before they unionized and we were forced to pull our pensions when we left. We really need this money in our pension funds now.
