Technical Difficulties

No, we aren't gone.

Yes, we are having an issue with the Blogger server.

As a result of the issue, we have to take down the comments for the evening. While this means a lighter work load for us when we bring it back up, it means that the readers have to save their brilliant observations until such time as Blogger gets fixed.

We're hoping it's fixed in time for the traditional Friday night drunk blogging.

Please stand by.

UPDATE: 0300 am - problem continues.

UPDATE: 0632 am - problem continues. A number of other bloggers have reported the same issue we have. No ETA on solving it though.

UPDATE: 1038 am - problem continues. Still no ETA on solving it.

SCC, the technical difficulties you and other blogs experienced shows the weakness of the internet versus print media. If you publish an article on the internet and it is not well received by people in power, all they have to do is throw a switch and you're in "Techical Difficulties Land".

I hate it when my paranoia kicks in!

"Probably the most famous American B&W test pattern is the so-called 'Indian Head' monoscope pattern. This pattern was originated by RCA in 1939; it was designed to be generated using a special tube called a monoscope, a CRT which had a metal plate target on which the pattern was printed. The black lines of the pattern would interrupt current flow as the pattern was scanned to provide the desired video output. These tubes could only handle black and white - no shades of grey hence they had to be simulated either with a halftone dot pattern or with patterns of fine lines."

Believe it or not, kids, TV stations used to sign off at oh, say, midnight -- and put on a "test pattern" until broadcasting resumed at maybe 7 AM. The one SCC put up is one of the best.

A little history from the Analog Days.

Ah, here we go. More on the Test Pattern Experience that used to be a part of life...

"Often, an announcer would mellifluously advise viewers that the channel was about to conclude its broadcast day. Sometimes viewers were assured that the station subscribed to the standards of the National Association of Broadcasters.

"The National Anthem was usually played, occasionally accompanied by film of jets streaking across the sky. Other times, pictures of the Founding Fathers or other significant American figures or monuments were presented. The test pattern would then be displayed for a while, followed by a squealing sound, and finally several hours of static before the station's next broadcast day began..."
