Meanwhile, Service Employees Union Local 73 warned that Daley plans to compromise public safety by laying off 293 civilian employees of the Chicago Police Department and forcing uniformed officers to do civilian jobs.
Employees targeted for layoff July 1 include 186 crossing guards, 67 detention aides and 40 traffic control aides, the union said.
“Detention aides work in lock-ups. They’ll be replaced by police for sure. Crossing guards are replaced by police now if they’re absent. Layoffs will mean more of that. And traffic control aides would probably be replaced by uniformed officers,” said Matt Brandon, secretary-treasurer of Local 73.
Crossing guard coverage is a joke. Most districts are covering three crossings a day anyway. And last week, they held an awards brunch for crossing guards who hadn't missed a day of work all school year by (get this) having the guards miss work! Perfect attendance all year except for the day of the brunch. We got half a dozen letters saying that almost five extra crossings per district had to be manned by beat cars that morning.

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in a vacant lot in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood this evening, police said.
The shooting occurred in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to an incident report posted by Chicago police.
Two males fired shots fired at the victim from near an alley as he stood in a vacant lot, the report said. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.
The shooters were not in custody and Grand-Central Area detectives were investigating the incident Tuesday night, the report said.
As of about 10:20 p.m., a representative from the Cook County medical examiner's office could not yet provide the victim's identity or additional information.

I was driving south on ashland to a Blackhawks game during the playoffs. I saw two of these asshat Traffic Control Aides were standing on the corner of northwest corner of Ashland and Madison texting on their phones while the light was out. They were not helping the flow of traffic at all.

Can someone please explain why the crossing guard supervisors drive around in Marked Squad Cars? They are not the police.
Look at 1108(Marcia A) who uses the Marked Squad to do her personal errands. She can be found doing her personal banking at 47th and Rockwell, going thru red lights with the emergency equipment on. All ths while there are No available cars for Officers to respond to emergecny calls, since there is a shortage of Squad Cars.
Bring back patrol boys (and girls). They work cheap (like free).
You want to save money? Get rid of the Air 1-2. That helicopter is useless. Can I get an event for a sealt belt mission. Thats right a few weeks ago the helicopter was on sealt belt mission. The question should be how many movers did he get. A week before that they couldnt get in the air to assist on a case chase that lasted for 40 minutes. Save some money in fuel and put those merit officers on the street.
I am a Sgt. and I was in training for the new performance evaluation, and they said in training that only 8% of the Departmet is at above average. So why I ask? Do they keep increasing the percentage of merit to 30%.
With their own statements we should lower the percentage of merit picks to 8%. I say 30% of my people should be above average.
The TMA's could fuck up a one car parade.

No one can manually direct traffic as well as well coordinated traffic lights can.
The only time it makes any sense at all to have a human being in that loop is when the traffic lights are not working or there is some kind of unusual event going on.

When I went to grade school, every month in 7th/8th grade there were patrol assignments. On two crossings there were crossing guards - everywhere else it was us, the older students, who did the job for free. It got us the freedom to be a little tardy in the morning depending on where our post was, and the freedom to leave a little early to get out there before everyone else got out of school. That was good enough, and it didn't cost anyone anything!

OT SCC for your FYI Was in Joliet(Will County) yesterday because my son injured his thumb during baseball practice preparing for the one of the biggest baseball tournaments in the world. We had to drive all the way there becasue no other ortho had openings where we live and he had to see a ortho hand doctor before we left for our tournament, which is in Omaha, to determine his fate. Well it turns out he broke his thumb and has to wear a cast for the next 4 weeks and will not be able to play in the tournament. We were all devastated. On the way home my wife drives and gets stopped by the Will County Sheriff's Police for speeding. She didn't realize how fast she was going because she was upset. This Will County Sheriff approaches the car and advised my wife that she was speeding and I respond she is sorry she didn't realize that she was speeding would it help if I was a Chicago Police Officer. He responds No you weren't driving. I then explain to him why we were there and he states I will be back with the ticket. My wife even asked him politely for a warning and he said no. He then comes back to the car and gives my wife the ticket and I say to him what ever happen to professional courtesy and he responds it is more important to save lives. I then tell him I would never wirte a policemen or a wife of policemen a ticket and to use the save lives line on somebody else. Deputy you are a pud and should be ashamed of yourself. All I have to say is what comes around goes around.
Detention Aides are a waste anyway. Seriously, it takes a whopping 5 minutes to process, and hearing these aides piss and moan "aawwww, another one? Maaann!" gets really old. And how they critique the 'quality' of arrests in front of prisoners often deserves an uppercut followed by a right cross. On a few occasions these idiots read arrest reports out loud, which is a big NO. "Aww man, he hooked you up on a trespass! Man, he's pickin on you homie!" Just shut up, click the photo, close the cell, and be thankful that you don't have a job at mcdonalds.

Officers who cracked heads at the Democratic Convention (and at the Division Street riots of 1966, and possibly murdered Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark) will be hobnobbing with today's police who are still occupying our communities and phalanxing our rallies.
We're organizing hundreds of Chicagoans to rally and march, to speak from personal experience about violence of the Chicago police in the 1960s, as well as their violence today. We will be marching to the FOP lodge, and have filed for a permit to see if we can't make it a bit safer for everyone attending (although we will rally and march, permit or none). We will also be celebrating the birthday of Peoria Black Panther leader Mark Clark, who would have been 62 years old that Sunday.

Let the schools take care of the crossing. Why does it have to fall under the police department. the schools can transfer the crossing responsibilities to the PTA of the school and the parents can then cross their kids. Just like the suburban schools do.
I am Full Time TCA in the loop and I think we do a better job that any police officer. Just ask any police officer who directied traffic before

My wife has been a TMA for a few years. They got four days of Training at the Academy and OEMC, but only two hours of Traffic Direction. The last day for their "Practicum" they went to the Sox game and learned from others who were just as clueless.
S.C.C. Last night at about 10 pm in the 016th Dist, there was a situation at the bakers square where four teenagers ordered food, ate it and one ran out the door leaving the other three there. The manager called CPD and P.O. Greco bt.1611 responded and when he began talking to the teens, one became disrespectful and P.O. Greco called for another car and P.O. Rutti bt.1612 went in to Bakers square to help Officer Greco. When Both Officers asked the loudmouth teen to stand up, Officer Greco patted down the teen and before Greco could react, the teen elbowed Officer Greco in the face causing a cut to the officers left eye. During all this,Aldercreature Pat Lavar was there eating and watching all this happening to the officers. What got my ass bent out of shape is he sat there telling everyone how he didn't believe what his eyes just saw and when the officer asked him what was it that he saw, Pat looked at his friends and said " well i heard it happen but didn't see it" You fat bastard. He was sitting looking right at the officers fight this guy and when it came to helping the officers with a witness statement, This fat piece of shit had selective memory. I'm sure this isn't going anywhere but i felt compelled to type it and tell you.

Our corrupt mayor of Chicago, R. M. Daley will disrespect a firefighters union by crossing their picket line this weekend.
Mayor Daley has vowed to honor his commitment to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors to be held in Providence, Rhode Isalnd this weekend, even though he will have to cross a picket line to do so.
Daley intends to cross the picket line of the Providence Firefighters Union, a union that has been in a long-standing labor dispute with the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island.
Even the Obama White House has declined to attend because of the picket line, yet Mayor Daley will attend.

Look at 1108(Marcia A) who uses the Marked Squad to do her personal errands. She can be found doing her personal banking at 47th and Rockwell, going thru red lights with the emergency equipment on. All ths while there are No available cars for Officers to respond to emergecny calls, since there is a shortage of Squad Cars.

You are so right. There is so much wasted money by those that run this dep't it is disgusting. There are way to many lt.'s who were making $100,00 + a year to begin with and given 45 minutes of comp time every day they work which they accumulate up to thousands of hours to cash out, made exempt to give them an extra $25,000 and a car. Meanwhile the entire phone system at my district (021) has been going down for days at a time for the last 6 months, the locker room floods and there are asbestos filled materials such as the floor tiles crumbling everywhere. At the same time we can't get a damn contract with a 3-4 % raise for two years !!

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in a vacant lot in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood this evening, police said.
The shooting occurred in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to an incident report posted by Chicago police.
Two males fired shots fired at the victim from near an alley as he stood in a vacant lot, the report said. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.
The shooters were not in custody and Grand-Central Area detectives were investigating the incident Tuesday night, the report said.
As of about 10:20 p.m., a representative from the Cook County medical examiner's office could not yet provide the victim's identity or additional information.

Then look at actual 'flight time' vs. ground/gas time. And for our birds, helo gas is only available at MDW, regardless of where the helo is flying.

OT SCC for your FYI Was in Joliet(Will County) yesterday because my son injured his thumb during baseball practice preparing for the one of the biggest baseball tournaments in the world. We had to drive all the way there becasue no other ortho had openings where we live and he had to see a ortho hand doctor before we left for our tournament, which is in Omaha, to determine his fate. Well it turns out he broke his thumb and has to wear a cast for the next 4 weeks and will not be able to play in the tournament. We were all devastated. On the way home my wife drives and gets stopped by the Will County Sheriff's Police for speeding. She didn't realize how fast she was going because she was upset. This Will County Sheriff approaches the car and advised my wife that she was speeding and I respond she is sorry she didn't realize that she was speeding would it help if I was a Chicago Police Officer. He responds No you weren't driving. I then explain to him why we were there and he states I will be back with the ticket. My wife even asked him politely for a warning and he said no. He then comes back to the car and gives my wife the ticket and I say to him what ever happen to professional courtesy and he responds it is more important to save lives. I then tell him I would never wirte a policemen or a wife of policemen a ticket and to use the save lives line on somebody else. Deputy you are a pud and should be ashamed of yourself. All I have to say is what comes around goes around.

I would love to know where their bean counters graduated from. there is NO WAY you can keep getting more from less. No matter which way you circulate the people, you keep giving less and less and less, at some point the camel's back is going to break.
We're already beyond that point. With the back to the streets program, less officer's on the desk, backlogs in too many districts, now go and do the work of others too.
I would like all the powers-that-are, to start picking up the slack of the vacancies. Lets see Daley direct traffic for a school crossing, or a few aldermen work the dist desk, and maybe perhaps a few of the deputies work the lock ups. AND let them view first hand all the sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts really that doesn't go on, because you're hopping from job to job, and a silly report that used to take 5 mins to write now thats 45 mins in an automated system.
What's in the best interest for the City of Chicago? Obviously not DALEY or the Aldermen. City assets have been sold, denying any future income for the Residents, only increased taxes in the future. We do not need the Olympics...Daley and his Alderman want it for their own personal gains...The money that we..as Citizens of Chicago have...from the Skyway, the meters and other assets should be RELEASED NOW! To run this city with the VITAL Services to insure public safety. Daley and any of his supporters really have to go. His criminal enterprise has got to be dismantled and they need to be prosecuted for their irresponsible criminal actions. Brian Strouse's Mother should run for Mayor!!!!!

Got to realize that in the outlying areas, when the officer turns on his lights, EVERYTHING is recorded. The video, audio and the radar gun. What is in line but not directly connected (yet) is the cash register.
And with the economy tanking, traffic enforcement is being taken to entirely new level as the agencies try to utilize new ways to generate funds.
So when you exceed the speed limit, you are just a heavy-footed motorist, but rolling pile of money.
OT, but important if you live in BEVERLY/MT.GREENWOOD area:
Don't expect much police service this summer, as the beat cars (mainly 2211) and tact cars are being pulled to sit on Church St. and Racine Courts. Now there will be two cars on both streets to control the animals and take away from protecting the tax paying, law abiding citizens on the west end of 022. In fact, tact cars that sit on both streets and cannot leave unless they have a face to face relief. Apparently the shootings on Church street and Racine courts take much more precedence than does the tax payer. Good luck if you need the police and you live West of Church street. I recommend calling the alderman if you need police service.

OT SCC for your FYI Was in Joliet(Will County) yesterday because my son injured his thumb during baseball practice preparing for the one of the biggest baseball tournaments in the world. We had to drive all the way there becasue no other ortho had openings where we live and he had to see a ortho hand doctor before we left for our tournament, which is in Omaha, to determine his fate. Well it turns out he broke his thumb and has to wear a cast for the next 4 weeks and will not be able to play in the tournament. We were all devastated. On the way home my wife drives and gets stopped by the Will County Sheriff's Police for speeding. She didn't realize how fast she was going because she was upset. This Will County Sheriff approaches the car and advised my wife that she was speeding and I respond she is sorry she didn't realize that she was speeding would it help if I was a Chicago Police Officer. He responds No you weren't driving. I then explain to him why we were there and he states I will be back with the ticket. My wife even asked him politely for a warning and he said no. He then comes back to the car and gives my wife the ticket and I say to him what ever happen to professional courtesy and he responds it is more important to save lives. I then tell him I would never wirte a policemen or a wife of policemen a ticket and to use the save lives line on somebody else. Deputy you are a pud and should be ashamed of yourself. All I have to say is what comes around goes around.

I am sorry, but some of the worst and most aggressive drivers on the road are cops and their spouses. Then when they get stopped, they want "professional courtesy".

Well, maybe these genius' will write the auto repair man that lives at 6100 S. Narragansett.
He parks his cars over the sidewalk, puts Indiana plates on them and leaves them on the street for weeks, leaves a pickup truck blocking the sidewalk every day!

Almost a year ago I was stopped by a Hickory Hills Police Officer for traffic. I identified myself as a Chicago Police Officer. After a short enjoyable conversation I was told to have a nice day and was on my way.
This is the way it should be. This is the way, in my 28 years, I have always conducted my traffic stops of off-duty Police Officers from this state or out of state. We must stick together. Unfortunately some cops are asses and have no concept of a police family. This should not stop us from doing the right thing.

I agree with you. At least the current guy (Roman) was the police before he retired. Before him it was a "matronly, old, grandmotherly civilian" lady who did it for years. Now what pissed me off was that she always had a new marked unit, with all the bells and whistles, while the officers got to drive the shit cars. hen I was in 7th and 8th Grade, during the 50's the belts were white and supplied by the Chicago Motor Club. It was damn cold on those corners. I suspect most of our modern day parents would have a fit if anyone asked their kids to be patrol boys/girls. By the way, it was all boys in the 50's. Girls were hall monitors.

I was just thinking of them. White gloves, too, so you could see the hand signals better. Places like Lake and Wabash, too, there under the "L" pillars. Trucks hurtling around the corner, trains screeching by 'til you couldn't hear yourself think, pigeons fluttering every which way.
They were artists -- part of the tremendous show that used to be the everyday working Loop. They also projected great humor and I-can-do-this-in-my-sleep confidence; I don't think you could have gotten mad at them even if you were the one waiting.
