Not a Piranha

  • Lorenzo Pious was fishing with a night crawler at Washington Park lagoon Thursday afternoon when he caught a surprise -- what looked like a piranha.

[...] But after Pious took it to Henry's Sports, Bait & Marine on South Canal, the 16-inch fish weighing 2½ pounds was identified as a pacu.

"It is definitely a black pacu," said Jason Duracka of Animal Island in Midlothian. "You can tell by the configuration. It is a common fish in the pet trade ,and they grow very large, very quickly. They are often mistaken for piranhas. They are the same family as a piranha, but they don't have the same attitude."

We recall more than a few stories about someone who released piranha in the Humbolt Park lagoons in the hopes of starting a breeding population there around the time of the riots. We don't think the experiment was very successful, but it makes for one of the funnier fish stories swapped over cold beers non-alcoholic fruity beverages.

The Revrund Jesse Jackass says---

When I was a kid and St. George Hospital was still over on Winnecona Pkwy, my mom would go to the doctor and we would see sit around the lagoon looking at the giant goldfish. I know, I know now they were carp.

Please don't confuse a Piranha with a Daley ... the Piranha has more of a purpose in life.

1 fish, 2 fish, green fish, blue fish.

Who cares about fish in the dirty city water holes.... unless of course fishing is going to become an Olympic sport for the 2016 games.

Tiger Oscars have plenty of attitude. And personality too, if such a thing is possible in a fish.

Ever seen the immense carp that come out of the Jackson Park harbor? Used to, anyway. Lorenzo there showed me how to make corn meal balls (with sugar and water) and mold 'em around a great big treble hook. Tie this to about 120-pound-test cord. When you get a nibble, wait a moment, then yank like hell and start hauling in hand-over-hand. If it ain't a carp, it's a body or a snow tire or something like that. You can hardly go wrong.

Fly fishing? Pfft. Hell, this is sportsmanship.

There was a Chinese place over on 55th Street that seemed to have fish soup all the time. No connection, I'm sure...

Now I know where they dumped the bodies in Chicago.
