Tahoe Flips
- Two Chicago Police officers seriously injured after their squad car was broadsided Friday night as they responded to a call were reportedly “doing well” Saturday morning, police said.
Emergency crews responded to the crash at 106th Street and Prospect Avenue about 8:20 p.m., according to police News Affairs [...]
Officers in a marked Chevrolet Tahoe police squad car were responding to a 10-1 — a call for additional police assistance —when a car blew a stop sign and broadsided their sport utility vehicle, causing it to overturn and skid 100 feet down the street...
These high-center-of-gravity vehicles don't handle well at fast speeds and flip awfully easily. But being that high up probably saved them a devastating hit that a Crown Vic or Impala would have taken at high speeds. It's a trade off. Be careful and best wishes to the injured officers for a speedy recovery.

Sadly, the 006th District Sgt who got t-boned in one of those crown vics didnt do as well as the P.O.s in 022. That accident happened during the day friday. no press coverage. 76 & Ashland. Responding to a man shot call at 83 & Ashland. She wishes she had a tahoe to absorb some of the collision instead of the break away crown vic.
These Tahoe's suck. Nothing like a gigantic, conspicuous vehicle driving down the street/alley at 0200. Nothing like a high COG threatening to flip the car at every turn. Nothing like a huge vehicle that slides around on a damp street like it was motor oil instead of water.
At least, I guess, they're not decked out with all the BS the 'concept Tahoe' had a couple years back at the auto show. Remember that? My fav was the "gunshot detection system". I'm sorry, I thought nature provided me with one of those on each side of my head.
initials please? Saying a prayer right now that both will be safe and sound, home with their families by the time they see this post. You'd think that Chevy might want to replace these death traps in light of all the bad press regarding the danger to innocent peoples lives. If I was a competitor I'd jump on this with donated vehicles and low prices like a bullfrog. Ribbitt.
Who came up with the Tahoe/SUV brainstorm in the first place?
WHY?
I'm glad you're alright officers.
The Ta-HO is a mistake for a city squad car.
The bosses at fleet were told that roll overs were going to be a problem with the Tahoes. They decided not to listen and now we have injured coppers. Lets just hope that the vehicle involved here is a total. One down and about 150 to go!

Damn! 022 doesn't seem to be having too much luck in keepong their new Tahoe fleet out of crashes. Please, everybody, you've gotta be a much more defensive driver in the SUVs. Buckling up doesn't hurt either.
This is the third Tahoe to roll over. FACT

Who do you think? The Tahoe is a FED vehicle and since Weis never made the mental transition from where he came from to where he went he's trying to run the department like the FBI. They are NOT conducive to urban police work at all. But then, who gives a shit about the working police?
Maybe try telling your partner to call out the traffic on their side of the vehicle. We always did and I still do.
Don't yell "GO!" like in the movies [confused with "NO!"], yell "CLEAR" or WATCH IT!", no confusion here.
Might not have helped in these incidents, but not a bad practice in general.
Heal up well officers and be sure to be laying out in the sun when the Medical Integrity ass-holes stop-by. It pisses them off when they can't say shit about it. Oh well.
Nobody tells these newer coppers how to play safe, only how the dept has "Got their back..."
Yeah, right
Hope for a quick recovery!
I can hear the bosses trying to think: "There's no danger here - we dont have pursuits so there's no need to be driving so fast anyway"
Then comes the 10-1 - whoops didnt think about that. Then comes the drunk driver - whoops didnt think about that. Then comes the guy with his stereo blasting and not looking for lights and siren - whoops didnt think about that. Then comes the jag-off on the cell phone or texting - whoops didnt think about that.
Thanks for thinking it through, bosses
The bosses at fleet were told that roll overs were going to be a problem with the Tahoes.
--------------------------------
Its mostly only a problem if the driver is not driving in a safe manner. And really, a roll over in an accident sucks up a lot of energy that might otherwise be sucked up by the occupants.
They are probably safer for the people inside them in an accident. And being taller, visibility is improved.
Every decision is a trade off.
Were they responding to the shot out involving the off duty P.O. at 112th and Bishop?
Looked for info in the news and on the blog . what was the deal
the tahoe's are dropping one by one. they weren't meant for what we do. i am also hearing that the front wheel(s) fall off if you hit a bump hard enough?
The Tahoe is not designed for urban policing, it is top heavy and does not perform policing tasks well. The only car ever made for chicago style policing is the Crown Victoria, all that crap from dodge and chevy does not measure up. The Tahoes should be used my the mail room and neigbhorhood relations until out of the fleet. Quit letting those morons at fleet make decisions, after all they took a functional division (EMMD) away from the department and it has gone nowhere but down hill since fleet took over. Remember a police fleet is just that a police fleet, and should be managed by the police.
Don't be concerned about the various problems with the Tahoes. Lover Boy Picardi is back at fleet and will solve all the police fleet concerns.
I almost crashed last week in the rain going to an assist call. I was only going about 35, I hit the gas and went staight sideways. Can't wait for the winter.
Assigned to a Tahoe? Drive it
S-L-O-W....They're not good police vehicles unless you're an out in the country lawman on patrol [mountains, dirt roads, paths, woodland trails, etc. Any dope should know this. They were just bought cause the dealer gave the City a great price, just to unload them . Once again, your safety is NOT a factor to the City, like they say it is. If it was, they'd pull all the Tahoes, sell them, and get real police cars.
SUVs are not meant to be used as police vehicles. Common sense JFED
When the city purchased the vehicles the deal was outlined in the paper. It was through a south subur
auto dealer.

There was a shitload of paper generated a few years ago about the Ta-HOLE. GM supplied a Ta-HOLE to CPD to evaluate. The evaluations pointed out:
(1). Poor visibility in the rear; can't back up fast. Boy-o-boy! Did they get this one right!
(2). If you're apply the brakes at speed, the brakes heat up quickly. By the third time you braked in a short period of time, you have no brakes! This was pointed out in the evaluations. boy-oboy! They got this one right!
(3). Correct Phil Schitz if he's wrong, but didn't a CPD boss get himself jammed up a few years ago for bringing in Tahoes? Wasn't Phil Cline pissed off? Fact? Rumor?
(4). Turning "turtle". Anyone who drove this vehicle said it would turnover on it's back in a sneeze. Boy-o-boy! Did they get this one right!
(5). The evaluations said the Tahoe wasn't designed for urban law enforcemnet. Boy-o-boy! Did they get this one right!
(6). Lawsuits: One of the evaluations said this vehicle is unsafe to operate as a law enforcement vehicle in an URBAN envirement. The author said the lawyers would feast on the traffic accidents.
(7). Boy-o-boy! Pretty soon they'll get #6 right!
don't forget to yell ACORN when going lights and sirens!!!
good luck getting a pool car.
"These Tahoe's suck. Nothing like a gigantic, conspicuous vehicle driving down the street/alley at 0200."
Yeah, because the older crown vics were oh so subtle.
I'm not the police, and I can't stand Daley and your super as much as the next guy, but bitching about getting new vehicles is a bit much.
I hate to be the guy who says this, but it needs saying: if the Chicago Police - the working police - put as much effort into reforming the FOP and lobbying city hall, as they do into bitching about everything as they do on this blog -
you would:
1) have a contract;
2) have access to higher quality legal representation;
3) and you just might get free lollie pops.
the design of the Tahoe and all real SUV's is to be higher in ground clearence than an auto for the specific purpose of clearing obstacles on the ground, therefore they are NFG for average City policing. A few might be OK for jogging paths, etc; but for everyday policework, they are one of the worst vehicles that could be used. they are the best for their intended purpose, but for that purpose only.
Please Exercise Extreme caution if you are a CPD, or ANY Law Enforcement Officer assigned to one of these vehicles, they Roll easily as they have a different center of gravity than an automobile, the higher, narrower design will definately effect what happens upon a vehicle crash impact.
Was there a Training course given on these Tahoes? If not, how about a class action lawsuit? Even if you were a passenger in one for a day, let's file a lawsuit.
They have bad traction control on wet pavement NOT 4-wheel drive. How much $$$ did theses cost and was it O'Bama stimulas $$$?? What another waist of our tax dollars!
Good driving by PO in bad situation. Also good radio work. Seat belts saved them but the citizens on the street had to give them a kitchen knife to cut themselves from the tangle of the microphone wires. Will be interesting to see how the "panel" calls this one. Other driver admitted to going too fast to stop.

You sir are an ass.
Who came up with the Tahoe/SUV brainstorm in the first place?
Da mayor didn't know anything about which relative sold the city the tahoes
Maybe try telling your partner to call out the traffic on their side of the vehicle. We always did and I still do.

WHAT PARTNER? WE ONLY HAVE FEW 2 MAN CARS ON 1ST AND SECOND WATCH.
The problem isn't the Tahoes. It all these 2 yr wonders driving them to person with gun calls like they just boosted the dam thing.
It never fails. The brand new cars alwys get jacked whether its a Crown Vic or a Tahoe. Police are their own worst enemies. Take a ride out to 007, 015, 011 and watch these retard "RANGERS" drive to calls. It no wonder there aren't more coppurs hurt. Like they told you in the Academy kids. You do no good if yo don't make it there and you only hurt the officers who called the 10-1 in originally when you wreck driving like an a-hole.
Fact of the matter is the Tahoe rolling over disapates the energy from the T-Bone collission. Study after study has been done on SUV's from insurance companies to the federal government. In over 85-90% of rollovers the victims were injured less severely then if they would have been in a sedan. Over 70% of rollovers in the country are DRIVER ERROR! Take a look for yourself. I don't give a fuck if its a new damn Excursion/ F150, Tahoe Suburban.......................anything is better then the pieces of shiat we drive now.

And they bought themm from a dealer out of the city! Nice tax the shit out of chicgo dealers then buy out of the city from advantage chevy in hodgskins ill.
Several years ago we got our first Tahoe in 015. A few thousand miles later is was on its shell on an issue of a traffic safety bulletin after being T-boned while the POs responded to a call. The other car was I believe a mid '90s Olds 88 which sustained almost no damage to the front bumper. I think the front plate of the Olds got swiped off and the bumper scratched. The Tahoe was hit driver's side at the sweet spot and fishtailed before rolling. Both POs OK but Tahoe totaled. Personally I think the CPD should be the first all SMART car dept in the US. What do you think?
Glad to hear the officers are going to be okay.
As for rolling a Tahoe, there are statistics all over that state how much more dangerous an accident is for the occupants if the vehicle rolls over. There isn't a vehicle sold in the US that can handle a high speed roll over and keep the occupants safe. The occupants are much safer in a car (i.e. Crown Vic, Imapala, etc.) that has been t-boned and stays on all four wheels, than a Tahoe which has been t-boned and then rolls over on its roof.
Here's some info I found off the Georgia Governor's Office of Cosumer Affairs website (I googled it: http://www.georgia.gov/00/article/0,2086,5426814_39039081_38820612,00.html) that notes SUV safety statistics:
*SUVs rollover more easily than other types of vehicles-about 37 percent of fatal crashes, as compared to a 15 percent rollover rate for passenger cars. (National Traffic Safety Administration)
*In 2006 SUVs had the highest occupant fatality rate of any vehicle type in rollover crashes at 7.77 per 100,000 registered vehicles. This compares with 6.98 for pickup trucks, 3.10 for vans and 3.18 for passenger cars. (Insurance Information Institute)
*Single-vehicle rollover crashes accounted for 47 percent of driver deaths in SUVs in 2006, compared with 39 percent of deaths in pickups and 21 percent of deaths in cars.
8,062 SUV occupants died in 2006. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute)
*43 percent of car occupant deaths in 2006 occurred in single-vehicle crashes, and 57 percent occurred in multiple-vehicle crashes. By contrast, single-vehicle crashes represented 65 percent of crashes involving SUVs and 62 percent of crashes involving pickups. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute)
Be safe out there!
ford crown vic is going to be dis continued... they need to get rid of the tahoes and get the mercury merauder. almost the same as the crown vic execpt it is one foot wider and 19 inches longer with a little more power(instead of the regular 4.6 police package it has the 4.6 supercharged police package.) the same as what we have but with a little more interior room. screw the tahoe, and screw the impala. chargers... way too small... merauder is the only option left.
don't forget to yell ACORN when going lights and sirens!!!
ok.... reed or lorenz. yelling acorn when driving isnt funny. I know you guys do it and think its really cool and funny to say "acorn" but stop... you just make yourselves look like an ass. a simple clear left or clear right will do. enough of the lame ass "acorn" crap
I'll drive the Partridge family bus and make it work. They have the same physical properties as everything else in the universe: mass, speed, inertia, etc. If you can't handle the vehicle at the speed you are forcing it to go it will eventually catch up with you.
Car, truck, semi, it must be maintained according to driver and vehicle capability. Sirens don't mean you can defy the laws of physics. Clear your intersections and a boogie. You're no good to situation if you don't make it there.
Safe and speedy recovery Officers. At least enjoy some time away from this circus of plitical clowns.
You don't understand, the Tahoes looks so good from the helicopter rolling down the street in the motorcade or pulling slowly out of an underground entrance ramp with all the dignitaries inside, it doesn't matter if it is useless for police work! J-Fed is all about appearances. He loves that shit.
Let's get with the program here.

Personally I think the CPD should be the first all SMART car dept in the US. What do you think?
----------------------------------
Converting to smaller cars would not be a terrible thing. Virtually no pursuits in the city. Better gas mileage.
Would probably have to bring back the paddy wagons though. Might not be all that bad of a thing.
Me, I would rather drive a nice tall SUV, in a safe way. But, they are not high speed pursuit vehicles and cannot be driven that way.
The thing is, everyone knows they have this limitation. Abide by the vehicle's limits and you will be fine.
Its mostly only a problem if the driver is not driving in a safe manner. And really, a roll over in an accident sucks up a lot of energy that might otherwise be sucked up by the occupants.

As a civilian, I can't help but wonder why the car choice is never pragmatic. You guys drive around all day and all night. It's nice to have a car that fits in and doesn't look out of place. Why not drive a Pontiac Vibe? The GT's have lots of power, tons of room inside, handle great, it's technically an "american" car but has toyota reliability since the platform is made by them. There's one suburban police force that is using them (westchester? Hodgkins?). No, instead we have these enormous cars which I'm sure you guys like for the power and ability to absorb impact, but they use shitloads of gasoline that we ALL pay for - not to mention the take-home cars.
I'm surprised that one of the car manufacturers hasn't designed a platform JUST for law enforcement. It would use common, easily-available parts on a custom chassis that could be outfitted per its job duties. The body would come in one or two styles. high-output engines. Big tires. The opportunity here is immense...
Those tahoes are a joke. 2WD? In Chicago? Good luck with that guys..let's hope the city doesn't get the olympics, shortshanks is indicted or dies, and we all get that hidden money to outfit our first responders better.
Damn this city is a joke. Stay safe out there.
We need Hummers.
Unfortunately most people don’t realize there is a difference in driving a truck with higher center of gravity than that of a car.
When Chevrolet unleashed the new & improved 9c1 Caprice for '94 some of us were quite intrigued... reinforced TRUCK chassis, heavier duty body mounts, extra capacity for oil & coolant and external coolers for same, 5.7 liter LT1 (detuned Corvette)dual exhaust engine rated at 260hp (lie, more like north of 275 plus and monsterous torque) 0-60 in VERY low 6 second range and a top end of over 140+ (CHiP trooper saw 158 mph in a slick-top). CPD saw none of these cars (crappy, wheezing 4.3L that shitted on you at about 50k miles), but CTA had the Rocket Chevy's in abundance! We wondered why the hell do we need a rocket to catch a bus??? One old Sgt. said he was glad we didn't because too many people coming on had no experience driving big high powered cars...
We cut our teeth learning to drive (M)assively (O)ver-(P)owered (A)nd (R)espected vehicles... 1961 Plymouth Fury was one (retired ISP Pursuit. God, what a vicious, old neck-breaker that car was!)
*sigh* ...memories!
P.S. Ford hasn't built a REAL Police Interceptor since 1977 when they retired the 7.4L (460 cid)... it's just badges, stickers & b.s. now.
be careful out there officers... blue lights aren't bright enough & sirens don't scream loud enough to keep some inattentive slob from blowing up a P.O. in a wreck. (Though we swear Police sirens were WAAAYYY louder in the 60's & 70's but we do reserve the right to be wrong;)
I don't understand how these things can flip. There's an order around saying that you can do pursuits in '08's (I think) and newer because they have been designed for police work.... /sarcasm.
Did someone screw the pooch again?

A truck frame? Not even close...same frame as every other B body since 1977, just had some extra welds at stress points. Nothing more.
Extra oil and coolant capacity? Nope. Same as civvie cars.
158 MPH? Oh really? So I guess the fuel-cutoff programmed into the PCM at ~147 mph is just a dream? I have contacts at CHP, including EVOC instructors and at their fleet shop...CHP did not modify their Chevy's, so would care to spew some more lies?
I'd tell you to stick to the facts, but you clearly don't know what they are.
