What Economic Downturn?

  • Tech bill to fund research center, electric car infrastructure plan

Gov. Quinn today signed a capital bill providing nearly $250 million for Illinois technology projects ranging from developing an electric-car infrastructure to helping fund a new science and technology research center at Northwestern University.

  • Gov. Pat Quinn signs $31 billion statewide public-works package

Quinn signs big package that also OKs video poker

Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law Monday a $31 billion statewide construction program for crumbling roads, mass transit and schools that will be paid for by legalizing video poker, raising fees on motorists and boosting taxes on candy, beauty products and booze.

The rookie Democratic governor said he is "betting on the future of Illinois" by launching the state's first major public-works package in a decade, predicting it would create or keep in place more than 400,000 jobs over six years. The legislation also provides more than $3 billion for hundreds of local pork-barrel projects doled out by Quinn and state lawmakers.
$3 billion in pork? "Sin taxes" raised across the board? And the "fees" on motorists?
  • Driver license renewals up 200% from $10 to $30
  • License plates up 25% to $99 from $79
  • Car Title transfers up almost 50% from $65 to $95
Bend over Illinois. Here it comes again and Quinn is driving the train.

"WELCOME, TO THE MACHINE"

Sounds eerily similar to George Ryan's build Illinois plan. 11 Billion Dollars. For what? I am reminded of it every time I renew my plates, drive down North Ave. through Stone Park and see the red pavers in the center island, or the stone "Welcome to Schaumburg" sign. All Pork. Yep, sounds like Illinois, business as usual. So much for reform. Reform in Illinois Politics is like evolution, it takes a couple of hundred thousand years!

As for Mayor Shortshanks, I can only image the headline if one of the murders would have gotten in his home and held him hostage. Aaah yes! Back to reality. Must be nice to go to sleep at night knowing that there's an ARMED officer keeping your back. God I hate that little Irish hypocrite.

Kudos to the officer.

I am waiting with baited breathe to see what "earmarks" State Senator Rickey Hendon authorized!

Last year he authorized one million dollars in grants to his campaign workers and when the media revealed that they misspent the money his response was "I only authorize the expenditures, I do not assure that they do what they proposed. It is up to the State to ensure that it is spent properly."

The State then responded that the legislature has not provided the funds for them to audit these programs to make sure that the money is spent properly.

It appears that the taxpayers of Illinois have no one looking out for us.

I wonder if Hendon voted to weaken ethics legislation in Illinois?

Didn't we recently see the Cook County Sheriff's Dept. chopping up those video poker machines that had been confiscated from taverns in the south & west suburbs? Behavior that was criminal a couple of months ago is now to be encouraged (up to 5 video gambling machines per tavern) in order to fund this latest round of spending?

In Illinois, and especially Chicago, we can no longer vote for the best person to do the job. We must vote for the "lesser" of 2 evils, which is very hard to do in Shitcago. They are all evil, thieving Mo Fo's alligned with the Daley Crime Family. Is there such a thing as an "Honest Politician" in this State ??????? LOL !!!!!!!!

This is the same little jagoff that was grandstanding during the Blago Impeachment hearings about how he was going to introduce bills into the legislature that would "reform" the cesspool of government that we call the State Congress of Illinois. He was going to ensure that Blagcorruption would never happen again!!!

Either he lied or Madigan told him to STFU, probably both.

Thanks for raising taxes on cigarettes. Now the crowd selling loose squares near the train tracks will make even more money. All they do is pile into a car, drive to Kentukcy (no taxes on cigarettes) buy 25 cartons at a time, drive back to Chicago and make a huge profit (minus gas of course). Now they can add candy to the list. This is a sick joke on anyone who voted Democratic. I did not. Will anyone with a sack run against this fool?

How exactly are they going to oversee these machines??? Who's going to monitor all the little taverns? How much does the tavern pocket (legallY) and how much will the state get?? I smell FRAUD all the way to city hall when the shanks will want a piece of the action...i.e. more licensing fees, payout fees, etc. etc. We all know how mobbed-up these machines are.

Nope! Kentucky taxes cigarettes, just not as much as Illinois. And there's a five-carton limit wherever you buy 'em.
