Bear Gets Away Again

One time, OK. Accidents happen and these dogs are trained to go over fences. Twice? Time for a new fence:
  • Bear, a Chicago police dog, has gone AWOL from his handler's South Side home for the second time in two months, police confirmed this morning.

The 2½-year-old male German shepherd went missing from the backyard of his handler's home on the 3800 block of West 109th Street in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood after midnight early Saturday morning, said Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak.

Kubiak said police are conducting an active search for the dog.

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled. Again.

Dear scc: I'm really pissed this time. The handler said last time he ran was because of the storms so why isn't the k9 officer being taken care of by his handler properly during storms. Give the k9 officer to someone else who will take care of him the right way cause he can't do it for himself. Bear is an officer and should be treated with the same respect that we expect for ourselves. If rain is on the way he should be brought into a sheltered area the same way we want to seek shelter during a storm.

Ok, maybe the dog is skittish with thunder or whatever... but dont forget, the guy is missing his PARTNER. you can say all the monday morning quarterbacking stuff about he should have done this or done that with the dog but all your doing is bashing a fellow officer. not the department, not the rank, not the political machine but another officer who helps out many officers when they need it. so if you dont know him, and havent called for his help then keep your negative comments to yourself. you should all be hoping that bear is found and then we can go from there. he may be a dog but he is one of us and on our side

I mean, didn't the Canine Officer learned his lesson when Bear got away the first time and was lucky to have him back, but then, lost him again the second time? We are talking about a trained dog here, not a star or a shield. So, what would be the punishment for negligence on the Canine Officer's part, a freaking slap on the wrist??

okay let's remember it's a dog not human won't follow departments policy on leave. Anyway when you sign out a radio yeah you should keep track of it. It doesn't have it's own brain or 4 legs to walk away/jump away. My dad (when a teen ager) had a german sheppard who would scale a 12 foot fence for fun. Once they learn it pretty impossible to stop them. That dog was forever roaming the south east side. My dad would drive by the dog (from the south east side of chicago) in Indiana and stop the car and make him get back in and take him home. In fact (this was the sixties) the cops in the neighborhood(when the cops knew everyone and their dog lived at) would call their house and tell them where their dog was at again or drive him home. So maybe a gps chip is needed to track bear's ass when he is out to play and we won't have to have the media help out. We can just track him down quietly.

The department should provide a kennel with a top on it to all Canine Teams. They are about 900 bucks for a really good one.

900 buck vs all the training and care spent over the years on the dog, the safety of the public, (think ghetto lottery if a loosed police dog bites someone), resources devoted to finding the loosed dog, and just the fact that they are usually trained to go over fences, this would make sense to me,,,

I'll be one to give the benefit of the doubt to the human member of the team :) It could only take a couple of seconds for a dog to go over a fence,,,
open the door, out goes the dog, turn to pick up the garbage or to pick up your keys off the table you forgot, turn around, no dog.

Everyone sworn reading this knows it takes a dog about 2 seconds, tops to go over a 6 foot fence which is nothing for them.

The officer has enough trouble right now from the way its playing in the media, time to circle the wagons,

The question: Why doesn't CPD pay to place a kennel for such an important asset, they are portable in case an officers assignment changed, they are relatively cheap, they protect the public and the dog, If you want to throw stones, at least figure out a way to lob one at the folks who run things...

--not a cop--but not that --not a cop

SCC thanks for allowing this post and to all Officers, be safe !

Ok, Citizen here, who happens to be a dog person. I've had huskies and Jack Russell terriers- both difficult breeds to work with, and to contain. The best trained dog is still that, just a dog. If frightened enough it will revert to instinct and forget all it's training. If it has a fear of thunder, it's going to be afraid of thunder no matter what. My advice is an Invisible Fence. When Bear is in the yard, wear the collar and he will never again escape. When the fence is installed, the company will train the dog to the fence so it knows what it is all about. A warning beep is put on the collar so the dog knows when it's approached too close. Some dogs- my husky Toby was one- are stubborn enough that the warning has to be taken off, just goes straight to the shock. The shock isn't too bad- I've checked it out on myself on all my dogs. I would never subject them to something I can't handle. The intensity can be adjusted to what the dog responds to. I've had great success with this and recommend it to anyone who has a difficult to contain dog. They won't go over the fence, or under it. And, once Bear is trained to the fence and knows to anticipate it, he should be more afraid of approaching the shock zone than the thunder. If that doesn't work- he'll have to be contained inside somewhere. But, I'm betting it will work. I do want to clarify one thing though- the Greyhound Rescue org. doesn't recommend the Invisible Fence for greyhounds. Apparently they are so fast they are gone before they experience the shock.

It also doesn't suprise me that a retired police dog would be jeolous of a working police dog. Anyone who's worked with a breed that's bred and trained to work knows that a working dog has to work. I know an officer's schedule doesn't permit a lot of extra time, but it might be nice if someone could take the retired dog out for "pretend" work. Just don't insult it's intelligence- dogs do know when you are humoring them! It needs to be "real" enough for the dog to enjoy it. He'll still be envious of Bear though. Just like any other retired officer.

I'm sure Bear will be found safe and sound. That is my hope anyway. Only those who have lost a dog can know how it feels to have one missing. I feel for Rick. Critize all you wish- cause you clearly will- but Bear is still, all in all, just a dog, who's loved and missed.

Dogs or any other animal should not have to live outside. I have heard that this guy doesn't like the dog that much and I don't believe those peeps who say they know this guy and know he loves the dog.

Look, if he cared for the dog, it wouldn't have to live outside and wouldn't escape twice. Please. He doesn't care for the dog in every sense of the word.

Take the dog away. He doesn't deserve to have a good and smart K9 officer for a partner. Send him back to the district. Give the dog to someone else.

Ya know, maybe Bear doesn't like RK. Maybe they are two partners who cannot stand each other and Bear doesn't want to work with a dummy. My dog likes me and I like him. He does NOT try to get away from me. He does NOT try to get out. He does NOT run away. Once we were out hiking in the woods and I tried to ditch him, keeping an eye on him the whole time. He was slightly panicked charging back and forth up and down the trail about 50 yards each way, head up, ears erect nose searching the air. Then he shortened his search and narrowed the scent. He did not run off, and I'll be damned he tracked me down 10 yards off the path behind a tree. It was amazing to see. And he is just some mutt we rescued from the dog pound. So maybe the partnership of these two needs to end. I just hope some jag off doesn't get ahold of Bear and think he would be a good fighter or bait dog before you cops or some alert citizen finds him first.

Even though Bear is smarter then the other K-9's he'll never make Sgt. cause he doesn't have a phone call.

I had a dog that ranaway once. Made it all the way to Alaska. Funny thing, he was a skinny dog when he left but came back a huskie F---er.
Being a dog ass myself, I hope they find the dog soon and there is no video involved.

Hey, LAY OFF! Jeez, some of you guys are so bitter! Heard a clip of the po on the news... sounds like he as a bad dog... by the way, these dogs are trained to jump OVER fences....poor guy has over 30 on the job and is considering retiring over this. What a shame! Keep your head up, I'm glad that when I have a bad day it's not on the news!! Hang in there, not all of us want to kick a brother when he is down!!

I can understand how this happens. My fellow officers plz, German shepards are very very smart and they can and will find any weakness and get out. I just hope that they find him again and bring him back. I know mine busted out and the good lord brought them home. I just know what a great dog a german shephard is.

7/13/2009 01:01:00 AM

HMMMMM I have 2 german shepherds and while they are smart, I am smarter. I must be they have NEVER gotten out of my yard. Of course having my dogs is not a "spot" for me. LOOSER

lay off rick and bear. those two have helped me and our team out so many times and unlike some k-9 handlers he actually takes his time and makes sure a good search is done. bear and rick have found us some pretty hidden away things that we wouldnt have been able to find without them.

Jaysus! Lighten up you bunch of putzes. King and Bear are two of us. I think everyone needs a vaycay in Grand Beach. What say Richie? C'mon, be a sport. I can get some of those ginormous monster truck inner tubes and we'll play bumper boats on the lake!!! Bears probably already there.

Misplaced anger. Rick's not the one reshuffling the deck on the second part of these promotional exams. Until you have a city council that demands an honest accounting, you'll have to settle for the dregs. Lest you forget, a famous international accounting firm quit doing business with Chicago over CPD promotional exams and refused to EVER contract with them again.

I have a german shephard and he does not leave my side. No storm, no hail, no loud fireworks or even gun fire will stir my dog. I think bear needs some retraining. A dog that runs from home has issues. He may be a great police dog but he obviously has some serious issues. The dog needs to be re-evaluated. His handler should never lose their dog...ie partner. My partner depends on me and vise verse. That handler needs to stop being so lax and learn to read his dog and keep an eye on him. shame shame.

Something wrong with using the Dept. issued kennel when not outside with the dog???? but what do I know...I didn't make the list of 50...dept. says I'm too stupid to be a k-9 handler.

try walking the dog 20 minutes a day instead of leaving him alone in the yard. if your heart is no longer in it, let someone else who would appreciate the responsibilty of caring for the dog have a chance.

I also have a german shepherd and he doesn't run away, jump over the fence or get frightened. I think it's time Bear met the Dog Whisperer for some intense therapy to work out his fears. Remember, No Touch, No Talk, No eye contact, just let the dog be a dog.

Hey RK, if your old retired dog is jealous of Bear, get him a retirement job! You live in the 19th Ward. It shouldn't be too hard. Just give Ginger an envelope with $5000 and your retired dog can get a job with the Cook County State's Attorney Investigator's Office.

Dude, don't believe everything you hear on the radio. It's called CYA. So if I'm understanding RK, he knows more about dogs than the trainers. Ask RK what he was trained to do with his dogs the first 12 years of his k9 life. If RK
had such trouble with Bear why wasn't Bear secured?
Why didn't RK document ALL of the dog's deficiencies?

Keep throwing shit at the wall rk. Maybe something will stick.

It is possible to chain a dog to a steel cord that you have a) bolted one end to your deck and b) bolted the other end to a cement pier dug at the middle of your yard. The chain travels freely along the cord, giving the dog full run of the yard but keeping the dog firmly inside your yard.

Figure the owner SHOULD be smart enough to accomplish this basic task. Otherwise, I'd hate to see him deal with a traffic violation by himself.
