The Second Guessing Media Whores

And so it begins once again. If you click on the assorted media links in the right-hand tool bar, you'll find lots of reports about Thursday's downtown shooting. You'll see headlines about "Officer shoots fellow cop" and a bunch of quotes from "witnesses" who can't believe the police would shoot someone where there are all sorts of people around.

In a number of comments, more than we would have suspected, people take the media to task and ask, "Well what the hell should the cops have done?" This was an assailant with a knife. The damage he could have done is huge. Thanks to some quick thinking cops, the damage he did accomplish was negligible. And while we're sure the officer feels bad wounding another cop, in a situation like that with a knife wielding madman, they did what had to be done to protect the citizens from further harm. When someone in the media invents a magic bullet that only finds bad guys and disarms them with minimal muss and fuss, let us know.

It seems that the pendulum is starting to swing back the other way and readers are unwilling to take media reports at face value any more. We hope it's true. It'd be a welcome relief from the inanity of the past few years.

UPDATE: Reports coming in that the Officer wounded was struck by a through-and-through shot. In this case, it's just bad luck that the Officer's bullet didn't hit anything solid on the way that might have slowed it's trajectory. It's also another blow to the media generated story that Officer shouldn't have fired on a crowded street. Lacking any additional media hype about dented buildings or broken windows or scraped citizens, it would appear that each and every bullet hit the intended target - the knife-wielding assailant. And that should be a testament to the Officer's skill and awareness.

Great job SJ

The bullet that struck the officer's vest was from a through and through bullet that struck and exited the offender.

Put all the other stories to rest. The 001st District officers only shot the offender!

This video is one of the main reasons we give fellow officers a professional courtesy, especially on traffic. Maybe some of you can pass this around to other states, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Georgia, etc..
Basically an on duty officer is in a fight for his life on a bridge, a lot of cars stop to watch but only one person stops to help, you guessed it, an off duty police officer.

What a day listening to the reporters. So many calling Ted a hero. Then at 10pm stirring it up because the guy with the knife got shot downtown. Like it was the officers fault. Like they didn't need to shoot. Like they did something wrong. God bless the officer's. Thank God the innocent civilian's went home safe. Maybe the guy with the knife is on the same bus to hell with the HERO Teddy. Lets see what you want the Police to do when one of the animals puts a knife to your throat. One more thing,Dana.....just go away. You are getting too FAT to be on television. Bring back Joni.

Hmmmmm... Well now!

Could it be that the masses are beginning to shake off the narcotic effects of the "magick odours and enchanting musick" emanating from the Daley colon?

Could it be that the masses are waking up in spite of the $30 to $50 million dollars Shortshanks spends annually on his local media relations/message control/spin-doctoring machine?

The local media has the moral standing and integrity of a cadaverous, pestilence ridden, toothless whore claiming high ground by virtue of clean underwear. They and their ilk are all worthy of being driven to being dressed in rags and eating cold pork n' beans in squatter camps along the banks of the Sanitary & Ship Canal for being aiders and abettors to 42 extra-short.

They hate the Policeman and seek his destruction because he see's them for what they truly are.

As the Police go, so goes this city. The concerted effort to demoralize, marginalize and undermine the lawful authority of the guardians of this city and protectors of the true, upright and peace loving citizens (of myriad races, ethnicities and cultures)who need and deserve our protection is hopefully soon at an end.

The time for correction and redress is at hand.

The Daley Inc. criminal syndicate fears this and have tried their damndest to drive a wedge between the Police and the upright citizens to further their criminal enterprise.

May the citizens continue to speak out and refuse to be silenced!

First Garfield Ridge, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Edgewater, Uptown and Rodgers Park become the playground for the savage criminal thugs; producing beatings, robberies, rapes, gang fights, shootings and burglaries.

Now this:

Cops quell gang melee on Northwest Side
August 28, 2009 2:08 AM

Chicago police quelled a large gang fight on a busy Northwest Side street early this morning, a department spokesman said.

Police were called to the area of 5400 block of West Irving Park Road in the Portage Park neighborhood about 1:30 a.m. because of a "large gang fight," said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer David Banks. It appeared were no major injuries, and it was unclear what arrests might have been made in connection with the fight, Banks said.

Details of what happened were unclear, Banks said. Although a bar in the era may have somehow been involved at the beginning, police were dealing with fighting that was going on outside, Banks said.

The fight was ended and police were doing "minor housekeeping" work by about 2 a.m., Banks said.

Although Banks said police in "several" squad cars were involved in quelling the disturbance, he was uncertain how many.

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/08/cops-quell-gang-melee-on-northwest-side.html

016, the home of 5,500 Chicago PO's is turning into the ghetto.

Where are OUR police? You can't hide the lack of manpower anymore. As predicted crime is escalating and spreading like a vile, rampant cancer. The 2,000+ sworn officer shortage is more than apparent to the voters and the taxpayers.

It is time for all new elected officials in Chicago. The most taxed city in America has the most undermanned police department in America.

Please have all of your friends, relatives, partners and citizens call their elected officials ( Alderman,Mayor's Office, etcetra) and the media demanding that more police officers are hired before Chicago turns into Detroit.

We need more police now and assigned to their respective districts.

The downtown shooting puts a spotlight on what has to happen in Chicago and other "liberal" cities.

Panhandlers should be swept off the street. At best, they are an annoying nuisance but at worst they can cause bodily harm to someone who is just trying to go to work, shopping or coming here as a tourist. Where is the tsunami of police?

In any case, it's a black eye for Chicago and damages any reputation the city has left.

Forget the Olympics, I'm talking about reputation with the suburbanites who won't even come downtown for any events anymore. (and with the 10.25% sales tax, no one in their right mind goes to North Michigan to buy anything.)

I am pro-police, but I am against the whiny crybabies that I read on here worried about their contracts and back pay.

"We're going to stop work" and "First and Fifteenth is all I want" and "Find a hiding place like I do. I keep my shoes off all day." Blah,,,Blah,, Blah.

Two-year wonders or twenty-year vets -- Join the teachers union, you slackers. You would fit in the coffeebreak rooms real well.

To those that still take their job seriously, you have always been revered as "the real cops". (And always will be)

No matter what the media conjures up, the model "Chicago cop" may not be in the best shape, probably doesn't use hair gel, and may even still use a wheel gun, but when the going gets tough, they are there in force. (And heaven help you if you talk back to them)

This is a bittersweet review of your current performance.

Some of you don't deserve a raise and in fact, should be cut in pay maybe even kicked out. Go work at Home Depot. We'd all be better off.

Others should be elevated beyond whatever "standard" salary you get. That's what MERIT means.

It is unfortunate that "merit" has taken on a whole different meaning but the same slant of favoritism and "who you know" has permeated all industries and professions - not just yours.

As for your leaders (and I know they read this), step aside if you don't know how to lead (or even salute) these people in the districts deserve better. You are a disgrace (and the public sees right through you, you aren't fooling anyone - except yourselves).

This department has become pussified, good people are afraid to do the job they were sworn into and have leaders that couldn't lead a two-car Chinese funeral.

Don't set any standards for your troops that you don't set for yourselves. Lead by example.

Now those of you who don't take your job seriously, go back to eating your Huck Finn donut and doing your nails. You will never know what it is to be the Chicago Police.

I'm done.

OT to 3:51am,

Portage Park has been a dump for years. The park itself has been a gang infested shit hole for quite a while. 016 from Irving Park south to Belmont is nothing more than an extension of 025. The south end of 016 is the reason that everyone living in Edison Park and Norwood Park don't know what a police car looks like. The 10 sector of 016 gets zero police service. I see Park Ridge and Niles coppers more than Chicago. I don't blame the police. 016 has plenty of radio traffic on the south end.

The topic at hand is what it is. The younger citizens don't trust the media, politicians, or the police. The same citizen backing us today will call for our heads tomorrow. The civilians hate us. The war is long lost. The coppers did a good job downtown. By the end of next week the WC will be bitching at them about movers and parkers!!! U can take that to the bank!!!!!

I'm not a cop. I'm a middle-class white woman who has always appreciated good policing. There is a significant majority people who want, who support, responsible policing of their neighborhoods. Patrol officers need to understand that people want your good efforts, but they are afraid of direct reporting of crime because of retribution. This town swells w/retributation, whether political, if a resident publicly complains about corruption, or crime-related, w/gangbanger criminal reprisal for people who speak out against drug dealers, gang activity, loud gang events, etc.

Recognize the fear in your constituents, please. Media may seek out the complainers, but the televised complaints are sometimes legit, and the bad apples on the police force certainly color people's perception of morale and ethics on the CPD force.

CPD officers doing a good job will get vocal support now; visible crime is spiking and getting reported. Media has noticed that their readers/viewers are scared and no longer placidly accepting things "as the are". Who ever thought that State/Randolph downtown location would be scene of a lunchhour knife mugging stand-off? It's a wake-up call for every downtown worker, whether suburbanite or city resident, that no area of Chicago is "safe" any longer.

Also, WBEZ played excerpts from Daley's press conference this week, where a black woman bluntly told him "we black folk won't keep kissing your butt". ALL THAT IS MISSING IS A VIABLE MAYORAL CANDIDATE WHO IS NOT ALREADY A MACHINE-CANDIDATE CORRUPT POLITICIAN. No suitable candidate amongst the alderpersons. Next mayor is likely to be just as bad as Daley, unless Claypool runs. CLAYPOOL: will you run???

Most if not all political organizations in Chicago area are corrupt machine-politics puppets of Daley administration. There are no citizen groups here that aren't fringe-nutnicks or covert Daley-machine support networks. There is an absolute power vacuum here in Chicago, in Cook County, and arguably in Springfield due to Michael Madigan and Amy Madigan stitch-up.

These economic times make the club owners fall for the allure of the "promoters" who basically assure them that they can bring in a few hundred people for whatever Hip Hopping retard wishes to spout off about "bitches n hoes". This act of desperation (and stupidity) has been played out time and time again starting w/ the fights and I bet anything a future shooting.Have seen it many times over and it ends up the same ALWAYS!! Time to put a foot on the club owners neck or be ready for the day when it's shots fired at 5400 Irving!!!!

Let me play the devil's advocate here for just a minute. If a bullet did in fact go thru and thru the offender and strike the other officer in the vest, that is in itself a pretty good argument that shooting in the Loop is not a great idea, if avoidable. Suppose the bullet had gone through and struck an innocent civilian? It would be lawsuit time, and the complaining about it being unintentional and accidental would not stop a rather large settlement. I wasn't there, and most of you commenting weren't there so I and you have no way to measure whether or not it was absolutely necessary to shoot. Sometimes the best judgement demandss that you let the offender get away and catch him another day. I honestly don't know whether that applies in this case or not, but it is something to think about. Remember, when things go terribly wrong the burden is on you to justify your actions. That does not necessarily mean that you are being "thrown under the bus," it is simply reality. Just by the way, at one time the District Commander of the 1st District had a standing order that no guns were to be drawn in the Loop.

Somehow or another he gets on the topic of he's going to law school to become a lawyer and I say in a glib way, "Just what the world needs is another lawyer."

Then he asks me if I'm a cop and I say no and he continues, "I HATE cops. I fucking hate them."

I laugh and say, "Yeah, you say that until you need one." Then I ask him, "What's the worst thing a cop has ever done to you?" and he responds, "Well I have a friend who stole one beer out of his neighbors garage refrigerator and the neighbor was a cop and he had my friend arrested on a felony for stealing one fucking beer."

I don't know how true any of that is, felony beer theft, but I was embarrassed as a citizen and worried about our society that here was a fucking drunk kid who is likely to be a lawyer and he's got a predisposition of HATING cops and the worst thing he can cite as a reason for that is because a friend of his got caught stealing a beer out of a neighbors refrigerator.

Use to be some cops would stop in that place before it turned yuppie. G-d, I wish there was one there last nigh who overheard that cocksucker and gave a heads-up to some patrolman about him to punch his and his friends ticket for driving while DWI or just walking the streets as drunk ass, assholes.

The city is deperately trying to cut the Police workforce thereby endangering the lives of its citizens and officers.

Jody Weis is either really stupid or a bad liar if he believes the "tipping point" of manpower resources impacting public safety hasn't been met.

There wasn't even a mention that patrolmen who could retire may not be because they are waiting for their contract to be resolved, thereby giving them a little bit more.

Perhaps the FOP Donohue did mention this and reporter Spielman just failed to mention it in the article, if that is the case, we have another example of selective editing, if not and Donohue did not mention this...will the retired still get retro pay and percentage of income after the raise. that's what i would be wondering if i wanted to get out of dodge and start a second career or just go to AZ.

Donohue does not represent me; but I think from what I have seen and read from him, I am not too sure he is the man for the job. When a man who is in charge of negotiating a contract that is years behind say:
"P stand for Police and Procrastination", I understand it is a glib off the cuff remark, but it speaks volumes about the way the FOP has been conducting business on behalf of its members.

Off the subject but an officer who is qualified for the 55 retirement was at a meeting Wed night and was told only 46 officers have signed up for retirement when 160 are nessessary.

8/28/2009 12:34:00 AM

Any officer with 20 years of service who is age 55 is eligible to retire with this plan. (correct me if i'm wrong).

The first group needs 160 officers,
(1 Nov 2009 to 31 March 2010, and must file by 1 Oct 2009).

The next group needs 130 officers,
(1 April 2010 to 31 Dec 2010, and must file by 1 Jan 2010).

After that it's 100 per year, who must file by 1 Oct 2010 for 2011, etc.

The problem here is asking someone to commit that far ahead to leave the job. Our needs can change in a heartbeat. Each officer knows what is best for he/she, but the insurance savings is a huge savings that you keep in your pocket, plus many are afraid to try something new with the date of 1 Jan 2010 so close (extra vacation checks, pay for unused days, raise money if we ever get any) that I see many waiting for the second round (when only 130 is needed) to bail out.

But if you really want to go, file now, and if the number is not there, you can still back out and go for the next round.

Let's not bash these guys/gals for not trusting the FOP or the City on such a Major change.

Major Hall!

Good job officers.

Drugs have ruined this country, legal and illegal.
This guy should have been in an institution instead of out on the street, but some ssholes think he will take his prescribed meds when left to his own devices. You can see where that leads us. ....people begging on the street, holed up in shitty rooms, homeless etc.

Brenda McCloug, store manager of Mrs. Fields, said she saw several officers chasing Stolarz.

"My personal feeling is he didn't have to die," said McCloug, who was visibly shaken after the shooting. "Somebody could have tackled him, and he would have fallen down."

The 4:30 Channel 7 News coverage was decent; they interviewed an alderman about aggressive panhandlers. What was really good was the interview with psych counselor who said, "from what I read, it looks like he committed suicide by cop...".

Aggressive Panhandler = Strong Armed Robber

Aggressive Panhandler + Knife = Armed Robber

Not far from there, on Franklin Street one night, in the pre-cell phone days, an aggressive panhandler confronted an off duty cop out with his girlfriend. What happened next was never clear except that the panhandler got shot by the ODPO and died, and the cop bungled the after shooting requirements and so he went to jail.

Stay safe, and be real careful with "panhandlers", they have nothing to loose, not even their mind.

Another reason we should carry the Glaser Safety Slug for general street use. It will usually break up in a person and not travel through to wound someone else.

No good for shooting through a door etc. but then we aren't supposed to do that anyway. Nor windows.

Do the dumb asses in the media really need to have it literally spelled out for them that when one is dealing with a psychotic knife-wielding shithead, that all bets are off and that whatever means are necessary to take the shithead down, while keeping the citizens out of harm's way, then take the necessary means. It's asinine that the media, and certain segments of this society, will focus on what could have happened (but didn't) as opposed to what actually happened. Yeah, you media geniuses, maybe one day you might think about how this city got to the point where a worthless shithead had the gall to brandish a knife in a high-profile location. Focus on that, you morons, not on what might have been.

Major kudos to the officers involved, they should get recommendations and decorated for the skill they showed in defusing a potentially horrible situation. You guys are great!

Don't get mad. Get even. I just contacted Mrs. Fields Cookie and related to them what their store manager stated after the shooting. 28 Aug 09 Trib. This manager, Brenda McCloug, stated, " My personal feeling is he didn't have to die. Somebody could have tackled him, and he would have fallen down." The stupid statement speaks for itself. Purchase wisely.

This is in regards to the poster who stated that we need more officers and assign them to their respective districts. While I am totally in favor of more police, I also have to say that you are out of your fucking mind to work in your home district. Even if you don't give a fuck and don't wanna be the police, sometimes you don't have a choice. And I am not gonna fuck with these shitbags and then see them at Jewel or at dinner with my wife and kids. I know that this can and has happened even if you work on the other side of the city. But I am not gonna shit in my own backyard. I'll continue to keep other p.o.'s families safe in other parts of the city, because even though a lot of us live in 016, 022, 008 doesn't mean we all do. Stay safe everyone.

ot...Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has launched a new blog on his department's Web site. It is called "The Truth Behind the Headlines," and it takes aim at media coverage Arpaio believes is inaccurate and incomplete.

So far, the posts have been in direct response to newspaper articles about the sheriff and his office, all of which he said are skewed against him. The sheriff is also using the blog to respond to editorials printed in the paper.

"We just want an avenue to respond. I don't serve any governor or politician. I serve the people and I want to get to the people some way to let them know don't believe everything you read in the papers, or even sometimes on television," said Arpaio

Anyone who fires in a direction in which the bullet can strike their partner belongs on a desk. PERIOD! IT"S ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE! there is only one time it is called for and this was not it. bad guy has a knife. Yes I know 21ft rule/fleeing felon/ had a hostage, but this still was not the time. And before anyone goes into detail I have been involved in 5 shootings.

If you were not present STFU.
5 shootings might qualify you as a softball.Just sayin.But I wasn't there for yours was I?

"At that time, I didn't know the man had a knife close to my throat," he said. "Everything happened so fast."

Bayenderian said suddenly he found himself lying on the street and he heard a series of four or five gunshots. He wondered if he himself had been shot, but he wasn't.

"And when they helped me up, I saw a few feet away on the street, the (assailant) laying down," he said. "He was shot. He was shot dead."

Bayenderian has nothing but praise for Chicago police -- among them, a female detective who stayed with him all day, following his ordeal.

"They saved my life," he said. "If it were another few seconds, it could have cut me. And I'm glad. One policeman, he come to me and said, 'There was somebody up there watching over you.' I said, 'I know, there had to be.'"

Why all you bees and ay-ches beefing about the media, Miss Filet Mignon did a nice interview with the victim who has nothing but nice things to say about the po po.

You think that's bad go on I-clear to the training division website. On the homepage is a button for signing up for the physical fitness test. Under that is a button for the power test standards, only it reads "standars"

You'd think that with more officers and white shirts assigned there than recruits, they would have time to proof-read what they publish!

Just another “keyboard commando” typing away in mommy’s basement trying to act tough and thinks he knows what he’s talking about.

Its possible that one day, you might be able to be a Chicago Police Officer. However, until then, reserve your bullshit comments about what goes on with OUR job to a conversation between you and your teddy bear.

Well, if the citizens passing by are truly missing their arms, one can still head butt and kick, not to mention the full body low hit tackle.

You know, if the passing by citizens were actual human beings and not placid rabbits waiting to be eaten.
