Where's the Money Going?

To the Olympics of course! Daley is shortchanging basic maintenance at a facility that will be expected to handle millions upon millions of extra tourists should Chicago actually win the games. But this article is chock full of corrupting goodness:
  • Mayor Richard Daley today downplayed safety violations federal officials recently found at O'Hare International Airport, calling them "not very significant."

The Federal Aviation Administration said it found numerous violations at the airport during routine inspections last month that endanger airplanes at takeoffs and landings. The violations ranged from debris on runways to excessive amounts of tall grass and weeds that create hazards for planes by attracting birds and other wildlife.

A warning notice from the FAA to the city said the violations show the airport is seriously out of compliance with federal aviation law. The notice also criticized the Department of Aviation for what it called a series of false statements about its self-inspection program.
  • A warning notice from the FAA to Chicago said the inspections show that O'Hare is seriously out of compliance with federal aviation law. The notice, called a "letter of correction," also chastised the Chicago Department of Aviation for what the federal agency called a pattern of false statements in its self-inspection program.
  • FAA inspectors found rocks, garbage and wood survey stakes used during construction on runways and taxiways at O'Hare
  • The problems at O'Hare the FAA cited in its warning notice are considered major violations -- not just housekeeping issues
  • Chicago Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino was out of town Wednesday and unavailable for comment
  • O'Hare air-traffic controller Craig Burzych said he noticed that in the last week the city has temporarily shut down runways for up to 45 minutes at a time during daylight hours to carry out major inspections for debris.
Pattern of false statements? Major violations? Shut down runways for 45 minutes at a time? These are runways were talking about, revenue generators at something like $1,000 per takeoff and/or landing. And Daley is pissing away $100,000 every time his sweeper crew has to go out and cleanup what should have been done correctly during the nighttime sweep. Not to mention he's obviously skipping the grass cutting that's supposed to keep it under 6" in height, which in turn promotes bugs, which attracts birds, which leads to bird-strikes that can end up covering runways with all sorts of airplane and bird parts which can be sucked into engines necessitating further sweeps and runway shut downs...it's a convoluted circle.

And Andolino is "out of town?" How Daley-esque.

Also, sucking birds into the engines that can cause an engine to fail, causing the plane to crash.

On the subject of the Olympics, I read that tourism in the host city does not rise during the Olympic Games. Olympic goers simply replace the normal number of tourists who WILL NOT vacation here due to the Olympics. Tourism does tend to rise afterwards as people want to see, in person, the sites that were seen during the television coverage of the Games.

if all these violations are occuring then why did the faa not shut down flight operations at ohare until the corrections could be made... does another plane have to crash before this happens... just like in minnesota with the bridge that collapsed, inspectors noted fatigue which needed to be addressed but continued to allow vehicular traffic to flow until one day the whole thing fell down resulting in the deaths of many innocent citizens...

A key member of Mayor Richard Daley's Olympic committee has a long business relationship with a developer vying to build the billion-dollar Olympic Village, the grandest piece of Chicago's plans for the 2016 Summer Games.

Chicago 2016 committee member Michael Scott also served as a consultant to the developer on a condominium project near the proposed athletes village, a development that would increase in value if the city wins the Olympics.

Scott, who negotiated key components of the $1.2 billion Olympic Village plan, said his business relationship with the developer, Gerald Fogelson, does not interfere with his role with the bid team. Chicago 2016 officials declined to say whether Scott's relationship with Fogelson was a problem, with Daley's Olympic team poised to spend billions of dollars in coming years.

Others recall Scott's role as more active. "I know Mike Scott. I know he was part of it. He was involved," said Madeline Haithcock, the former alderman for the area.

In addition, money for law enforcement has been diverted and CPD is at less than half strength, Aviation PD is over 100 guys short and guess what, as of this week. And since the airport is a mojor economic engine for this region and also a major terrorist target, there will be NO more training for aviation...guess the bad guys have inflitrated the administration.

As a Licensed Commercial Pilot, I have had MANY close calls flying into, out of and around O'Hare AND Midway. This is the season for Canadian Geese to really get up in numbers...the Goslings are mastering their flight skills, and usually stay around 1,500' above ground.
So picture this...
757, (2 engine LARGE jet, but not a JUMBO JET), starts it's take off roll and one engine ingests debris from the runway...ENGINE OUT. If the plane is going fast enough, it can continue the take-off roll and climb safel on one engine.
What was that?!?!?! A flock of starlings or other bird that likes to eat flying insects that usually are found in tall standing grasses, like those found at O'Hare because it's not cut short...OH SHIT!!! #2 Engine ingested 3 birds, causing 3 of the fan blades to shatter, knocking the engine out of balance as it spins at around 18,000 RPM, sending SHRAPNEL into the ENGINE COWLING containing the damage to the ENGINE, but since it was the only operating engine, you now have a VERY LARGE GLIDER...and not a whole lot of places to put down...
Mayor Daley? Have a SAFE flight.

-------------------------------
Yes. There will be no police service in most districts between the hours of 11 pm and 3 am to save money.

The 911 center will also be closed during those hours, however a voice mail system will record all calls made during those hours and they will be assigned to a patrol officer starting at 3am. High priority calls (such as those involving a chance for the city to gain revenue) will have a higher priority.

Dear Second City cop. On Monday, Sept 21, 2009 Ret. CPD SGT. Joseph R. Sosnowski passed away at age 56. He received the Carter-Harrison award for bravery in 1993 after being shot 5 times and survived. The offender was killed by his rookie partner who was also wounded. I find it odd that a police blog would miss this important news in place of some political crap about Daley when one of your own is overlooked. This man was a hero whose name will be in your headquarters showcase forever. He was buried today with a very poor showing of police officers, I think 4 to be exact. Isn't this a pity especially when a gang-gangers death gets more press than a true to life hero who was here to serve and protect and did, almost giving his life. Please pay attention to those who deserve it first, then worry about the rest.

This doesn't happen often enough.

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.

Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it "Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold."

The note was a follow-up to Ensign's questioning at the markup.

I talked to one of my gals in the med section who was there. Seems there is one problem child (civ) in the unit who can't seem to get along with anyone and has been rattling cages since she went there last year. Well the PO was walking past in the hall and may have brushed up against her. Civilian takes exception and pushes PO from behind knocking her to the ground and begins to pummel her with fists and the fight was on. At least two witnesses saw the entire encounter. The head of personnel shows up and declares mutual combatants, even though everyone who witnessed say that the PO was attacked. The broad from personnel also declares that she is firing both combatants first thing the next day. Its pretty sad when the head of personnel doesn't know we have a discipline process for sworn and civilians and she doesn't get to make the decision to fire anyone. Anyway the PO gets sent to call back and the civilian gets sent home with pay. Expect the lawsuits to fly on this one. The rumor is that everyone knew of the problem from the get go and the head of personnel refused to do anything about it. In fact she dumped the previous two inspectors and the admin sgt for sounding the alarms so she wouldn't have to address the issue. Oh well, another one of Daleys minions will cost the city plenty because of their incompetenence. The city that works.

Is there any Chicago equivalent of the 25th Amendment? If anything ever pointed to such a necessity, it's this story - surprisingly over-the-top even for Daley. "Those aren't major violations - they're just little pebbles and some bugs - oh, you mean the insect kind? Well, the birds eat those anyway!".

One of the comments after the Tribune story......

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2009/09/daley-downplays-faa-violations-at-ohare-as-not-very-signficant.html

......said :"I really, really, really hope the IOC reads this." Well, it's the 21st Century now, and between now and the Olympic vote the obvious objective is to run a "two-minute-drill" to accomplish just that. Shouldn't be too difficult, and it probably happened hours ago. But in case it didn't, run the "two-minute-drill" over the next week just to be sure. Steve Rhodes also had an incisive item today......

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/Mayor-Daley-Dismisses-Real-World-facts-61445667.html

.......and we need more of this - a "radical centrism" that unites even those who disagree about most other things. Because the facts speak for themselves. We're looking at some kind of precedent-setter in bad government, even before we factor in anything about airport hiring or corruption or conspiracy theories - as Chicago teeters on the mediocrity/mendacity cusp.

Is this the way to the 1919 World Series?

Scum Times....."Mayor Daley, on his way to Copenhagen to push for the 2016 Olympics to Chicago, issued a statement asking Chicagoans to “destroy the code of silence that protects criminals.”

“It only promotes the kind of violence that has taken this young man from us,” the statement read. “We’re all in this together. We must save our children.”

Yes Mr Mayor, and you are on the top of the list.......

SCC- Your right on about the landing fees. Slightly low a 747 whos landing/Departure fee was going around $1200.00 about 5 years ago. Thats 1200 in and 1200 out. If you were to look at not just the passenger jets but the freighters ie. FedEx-UPS-Flying Tiger and a few other Asian Carriers your probably looking in the area of $50,000 a day?

Then add in all the others. Last I heard O'Hare was making about 750,000 a day. Dont forget all the vendors who pay about 13% of GROSS sales to the city.

The cash the mayor is hiding has to be astromomical.

the faa report was written by John Halpin's daughter who works for the FAA. Halpin ran streets and san under Jane Byrne, Daley's political arch enemy. What a fucking surprise she shit on O'Hare. She's about as objective as you are.

I am a COMMERCIAL PILOT. I fly into and out of KORD on a fairly regular basis. Suffice it to say, it is a topic of conversation AND concern for us in the crew lounge on a DAILY basis...twice in the last 6 months, I've had to execute a go-around because of low flying birds or geese setting on the runway past the 1,000' MARKER...the 1,000' is where we set our aircraft down on a normal approach. The birds are then startled by my approach, fly up and scatter. I can't tell you how white my knuckles are waiting for the little fuckers to scatter straight UP and into my windscreen or worse, ENGINES...but hey...you keep thinking the FAA plays favorites with your BELOVED Mayor Daley. He is a complete fuck...not a tall one, but a complete one nonetheless.

The Dept. of Revenue van was winding its way through Forest Glen this morning looking for tax payers to fine for some infraction or another. They're afraid to go anywhere but the northside tax-paying districts for fear the "residents" will take offense.

9/25/2009 09:24:00 AM

I was on the West Side the other day and saw them on Madison, west of Pulaski, too! I also saw some in Lincoln Square around 2100 hours last weekend.

Distinguished Officers of The Chicago Police Department and Area 2 Violent Crimes,

I will offer a reward to the detectives and/or the "real" police that find the kids that beat this kid to death on Thursday. They beat him to death with lumber?

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/boy.dead.riot.2.1207717.html

I can probably commit to $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 upon successful arrest and prosecution. If you want more money, let me know and I'll try to raise it from colleagues.

This would be the same Rosie Andolino who fired Jim Maurer for provoking Ellen O'Connor, and asking for securiy resources.

9/25/2009 08:51:00 AM

I don't know much about Andolino but I do know that safety was NOT what Mauer was talking about at the airport especially at the time he got dumped. He's just grandstanding to make an issue so that it looks like he was really concerned. Read between the lines....

Ted Striker: Yes.

Ted Striker: No, I´ve been nervous before.
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.

Sorry for your loss. I know you want to help, but we don't take rewards or work any harder for them. We give everyone the justice they deserve, Gold Coast to the ghetto, to the best of our abilities.

That being said, maybe the neighborhood should know about the reward. Somebody always knows something.

OVER 350 US BORDER PATROL AGENTS CUT BY OBAMMA =VIVA MEXICO VIVA CHICANO CHICAGO!!!

9/27/2009 12:06:00 AM

++++++++++++++++++

In fiscal 2009, 17,399 Border Patrol agents have been deployed on the U.S.-Mexico border. In fiscal year 2010, the Border Patrol plans to decrease that by 384 agents, leaving 17,015 deployed along the Mexican frontier. At the same time, the number of Border Patrol agents deployed on the U.S.-Canada border will be increased by 414, from a fiscal 2009 total of 1,798 agents to a fiscal 2010 total of 2,212.

Have you ever considered the TERRORISTS know how big the Canada USA BORDER IS COMPARED TO USA MEXICO? DIVIDE THE MILES BY NUMBER OF AGENTS, AND YOU, (HOPEFULLY), GET THE IDEA...OUR NEIGHBORS TO THE NORTH HAVE A MUCH MORE POROUS BORDER...AND A LOT SHORTER DRIVE TO CHICAGO, SEATTLE, NEW YORK, ETC.

MAYBE WE SHOULD BE HIRING MORE FEDS? YEAH RIGHT...MAYBE DALEY CAN GET OBAMA A DEAL ON SOME CAMERA PODS???

I was in Traverse City, MI. yesterday and a Chicago Department of Revenue revenuer wrote me a parker for fleeing chicago parking regulations! The damn city vehicle sticker gave me away! Drat! I think I lost them on the way back to town with a few quickie zigs and zags, but they found me again. Now they are parked outside my house just waiting for me to flee again! Bastards! Now where did I put my foil hat? Shhh. I think they are on my porch.
