Technology to Remove Snow

Microwave beams to be transmitted from City Hall to melt snow before it even hits the ground?

No.

Secret chemical to be sprayed on city streets that will prevent sticking and freezing ice patches?

No.

Cameras and GPS?

You bet!
  • How do you avoid a blizzard of budget-busting overtime and still remove the snow from Chicago streets?

By using technology to measure and improve productivity.

Today, Mayor Daley unveiled plans to put GPS, high-tech sensors and the city's vast network of surveillance cameras to work to get the snow off Chicago streets.

Sensors on the trucks will tell camera-monitoring supervisors how much salt is being spread, how many tons are still in the truck and whether the blade on a plow is up or down on the street clearing snow.

And by using safety cameras, the city will be able to track the movement of snow plows without putting nearly as many supervisors on the street.

Is there anything GPS and cameras can't do? Besides actually make sure that enough plows and drivers are on the streets when the snow hits?

I certainly would not have put it past Little Tommy Byrne to think of all of this in his wee little brain. He can see eye to eye with DaMare on most anything that would fill his pockets with taxpayer's cash!

Am I missing something? Now the supervisor will sit inside a warm office staring at a monitor to ensure the truck driver is distributing the rock salt equally, as opposed to being on the street with the crew? and this is going to keep the cost down and the snow plowed quicker?

This is just a way to give Streets and San. a black eye. Remember, he wanted to privatize snow removal last year.

Watch for him to stage a media scandal with leaked GPS evidence and video in Jan. or Feb. showing a crew fucking off somehow.

Come May, the new snow removal contract wil be granted to "Marina Cartage - Enviromental Division" or some such scam.

daley should get the Michael Bilandic Mayoral Stupidity Award for 2009. And each year thereafter for as long as he is still soiling the 5th floor of city hall with his presence.

I have a vision for this city, that is that an offspring of Jane Byrne be elected mayor and spend her first four years in office removing any sign that anyone named richard daley ever walked the earth here.

Great, and maybe a probe up the ass of the driver can tell us if that driver is awake or asleep and would vibrate if a deep snore is detected. .

Why is it that whenever there is a controversial change (cameras and GPS), the city always washes it down people's throats with a bucket of "safety"? That is what they said about the blue light police POD cameras, Street Sweeper cameras, red light cameras, squad car cameras, and squad car GPS . The fact of the matter is these so-called "safety" devices never live up to the hype. How many officers feel "safer" with these devices in place? How many citizens have benefitted from the devices? Seems to me that whenever the "safety" devices are needed, they never work...How much money is being wasted on these things? Daley must be trying to give everyone in the city brain cancer with all these microwave frequencies floating around!

That's a fact. No doubt the mayor could hire 4 hard working citizens on byrne's salary. Now you got 4 supervisors with fresh ideas and more manpower coverage. And that goes for the rest of those power hungry thieve city high rankers.

True story: shortshanks refused to have GPS installed in his limos when the city began installing them on city owned vehicles.

His security team wanted it for security purposes. shortshanks said no for political reasons, he didn't want a paper trail of his comings and goings, only others can be watched, never the short of shank.

Shortshanks said this technology would let them know if a plow is spreading too much salt on some streets and not enogh on others. Have you ever seen how much salt is spread in the 11th ward? Especially down Lowe Ave wher John Daley lives and the 3500 blk where Sis Daley used to live? The salt is spread so heavily you feel like you're driving through salt mines. I'm sure this new technology will prevent that right Ritchie?

This is one of ShortShanks dumbest bullshit ideas. For the past 40 winters I have driven Chicago streets and have yet to see snowplows goofing off. They go where they are sent, but the Daley appointees don't know how to plan so they send them to the wrong places. Firing all of the upper management of Streets and Sanitation and hiring qualified people would be a great start in fixing the real problem.
