After the Tahoes

As the Tahoes are dying out faster than expected, we'd suggest the Department look into these:
  • The compact package combined with the tasty twin turbo 2.0-liter four cylinder diesel putting out 204 hp scores mid-6 second 0-60 times with 40 mpg efficiency.
Diesel. 40 mpg. The ultimate green beemer. The Germans are using these for pursuits on the autobahn, phasing out the Porsche 911s. Oh wait...pursuits. Right. We don't do those any more. Sorry.

How about the humble Dodge Chargers then?

It just looks fast, right?

We all know the Bmers are way too expensive. Hell, with that kind of performance, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bmer squads turn up missing!

Another thing...other LEOs that have purchased the Charger are finding out two very important negatives concerning that car.
They're way too small in the back for the average 300 lb+ American plus sized fatass arrestee, of which there are plenty of all across this great, FAT land of the USA.
The other thing is, those Chrysler cars are lousy in terms of reliability, and the maintenance on those Chargers is pretty pricey too.

Coming soon to a district near you! Smart Cars! Arrestees will be tied down over the roof of the vehicle as hunters once lashed down their trophy deer over their fenders for transport.

I remember my dad coming home from deer hunting in Wisconsin many years ago with a deer lashed over the fender of his 1950's Oldsmobile. Today's entire Smart Car isn't much bigger than that Oldsmobile fender either!

"Beemer" is a term used when referring to a BMW motorcycle. A BMW automobile is a "bimmer." Just FYI sc. Sidenote, that 1 series IS nice but reeally small.

Crown Vic...the best patrol platform available. Simple tune up and maintenance, why bother with anything else ? When I look at used Crown Vic Police Interceptors for sale, the engines run so quiet and smooth, you cant even tell the car is running. If not for V8 crappy gas mileage, I would use one for my daily driver. Ford has engineered these to do almost anything the old Caprice could do, and everyone remembers the Caprice as the gold standard for squad cars. The Crown Vic recieved Mustang GT cylinder heads in 2001, upping the horse power. Eveyone knows hot pursuit is only a video game these days, so a "Hemi Charger" is a waste of time and money.

I think most will agree that the Tahoes were a huge mistake. While they are well suited to federal or rural law enforcement they are a poor fit for urban or big city police work. Their reliability is fair at best. Brakes at 5-7k miles and more electrical problems than ComEd in late July. It is lacking in visibility and manuverability(try turning one around on a side street or backing down a narrow street or alley).

BMWs way too much $$$$ both as far as original cost and maintenance.

Dodge Charger or Magnum I don't think so... just ask any agency using them more problems than they are worth. As far as either of them being fast... not without the hemi motor. Both have major problems with front end parts and engine/trans mounts. Both have limited interior space especially after a cage/computer is added(think Chevy Impala which does not fit average size officers).

While many here may disagree or not care for the Ford CrownVic it ramiains the workhorse of the police fleet industry. It is a very adaquate platform upon which to build a police vehicle. If fleet would rethink the interior layout most officers would find it to be a very officer friendly enviroment(think center console w/swivel mount computer, light/siren control, dual flashlight chargers and cup holders all located between the seats and easy to reach/use). While not perfect the C/V remains the best option to date.

Sorry for the long post just info I thought you should have.

Larger, rear wheel drive Chevy Impala coming in a couple years. Should be comparable to a Crown Vic. Problem solved.

Enjoy the Tahoes while they're here. Roomy and comfortable. Just don't drive like an asshole.

Charger has no room and Chrysler still sucks anyways.

It'll never happen...

it was pointed out that even when we had 5.7L Caprices, the powers that be complained that it was too much car for a lot of people as people don't really buy/drive big powerful rear drive sedans anymore.

(crown vic is a fragile dog compared to the 5.7 Caprices.)

Ford hasn't made a REAL police interceptor since 1977/78 when they built the last of the 460 cubic inch V-8's.

We see the Tahoes are working out just great... not.

Since when do these guys need a big gas guzzler to drive around and log cars. In over 20 years on this job, I have yet to see a supervisor transport a prisoner in their squad car.

Let alone any other justification to having a big gas guzzler vehicle other than the fact that most are out of shape and could NOT pass the power test today! Yet, J-Fed wants us to pass a power test to carry a useless rifle!

These Tahoes are a very Stupid J-Fed idea!

Chargers

They are small in the back, who gives a shit, less room to raise your legs and kick. (admittedly we don't transport alot:) We haven't had any more maintenance than what is to be expected. $23,000 vs $40,000, better mileage. Especially nice seat and dashboard. Not as fast as they look, but that is what radios are for.

And they look cool, too.

Be careful and I hope you get your contract hammered out soon.

Here is ther real reason:

Mar. 21 2005--About a year ago, Buffalo Grove police joined a class-action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. alleging that the company's Crown Victoria sedans, the car of choice for most law-enforcement agencies, weren't safe.

But now Buffalo Grove -- along with dozens of other police departments across Illinois -- is trying to drop out of the suit. It wants to buy more Crown Victoria Interceptors, and Ford won't sell them to any agency involved in the lawsuit.

Illinois is the only state with a class-action suit involving law-enforcement agencies, including the City of Chicago. But since 2002, 75 municipalities in 20 states have ...

You know, I feel like we should experiment. Purchase 10 new crown vics, 10 impalas, and 10 chargers. Collect data and see which ones are most reliable. That's it. On another note, I'd love to see us get a couple carbon motors vehicles and try those out. Honestly, I think they would be most reliable but it's a lot of money to shell out at once. The vehicle would have to be extremely reliable to recoup the initial large deposit. Also, on another note, I wonder if toyota with its camry makes a squad car yet. I've seen some camry cabs. Toyota makes a great car, I'd like to see a camry squad. Yeah, they might have to throw some more horses under the hood.

LAPD was the sponsoring agency ( they were at three booths, NYPD was there also) but NO CPD in evidence. Of course, the majority of vendors at the show think CPD brass are morons anyway.

I walked 5 miles to school too, barefoot, in the cold, uphill in both directions. Arghhh!

Actually, I would like a Honda mini-van with a cage in the back. That would do nicely.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE !!! CROWN VICS - Come at a dirt cheap price when purchased in bulk by Law enforcement agencies... and quite frankly the best overall most comfortable cruiser for Police Officers. If they got their heads out of their asses and listen to the rank and file, we'd get swivel mounts for the computers, we'd have more room to fit in with our duty belts, and we'd definately have/make room for accessories that can be plugged in like chargers for our flashlights instead of all that being blocked out because of that piece of shit computer mount....

just for yuks...

no doubt the mopar 440 was truly a fire breathing monster but it was pretty much for highway patrol use rated at 375hp (lie, actual hp was around 420) and 490lb ft. torque...

the best modern era squad was the 1994-1996 9c1 caprice... these were NOT purchased for cpd but they WERE cta special employment fleet. You want to talk about some really, FAST police cars... rated at 260hp (another lie, well, a fib... closer to 300hp) 0-60 in about 6.3 seconds, same as the 69 polara and a slightly better top end. one chp officer holds the unofficial top speed of 158mph... he was running down a corvette if memory serves correctly. Kind of funny that we had a rocket to chase down bus disturbances but the real fun was hot-footing it from the lot to "... s/b on Michigan at 111th St." at 2230hrs... the late night "flight" down the ryan was big fun...
