The Breaking News website has the following stories all in a row today:
- Authorities this evening were seeking the public's help in finding a 16-year-old girl who went missing Thursday from Chicago's Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
- Chicago police were still searching for a 15-year-old girl who was reported missing in April, police said this evening.
- Chicago police this evening were hoping the public could help find a 14-year-old boy who was reported missing in October.
- A 14-year-old girl has been missing for about a month and Chicago police this evening are seeking the public's help in finding her.
- A 73-year-old man with dementia went missing this morning and Chicago police this evening are trying to find him.
Of course, this is all because of the 12-year-old girl who went missing for two weeks, then turned up dead in an alley close to home. Bobby Rush has been throwing around the accusations of racism in the investigation while J-Fed is saying computer errors may have led to a breakdown of an alert being issued. Both excuses are merely that - excuses. And both are part fact and part bullshit.
The Department handles an obscene amount of missing persons cases yearly. One figure we saw was something like 20,000 annually. The clearance rate is ridiculous, too - 90% and better. That's because the criteria for taking Missing Report are low (anyone can report anyone else missing for any reason with no time limit) and most missing persons return on their own in a few days. The media can't be forced to cover all these missing people and even when an alert goes out, we don't see them on television with any sort of regularity. The only ones we ever see are the elderly dementia patients.
Someone can cut and paste the next paragraphs and send them to Eric Holder who claims America is a nation of cowards when it comes to discussions about race.
The fact is, the missing white girl is the anomaly. It isn't racist - the facts bear it out. It's what sells papers and drives viewership. Black America doesn't want to face the fact and deal with the fallout that their 16, 15, 14, even 13 and 12-year-old missing persons are shacking up with 19, 25, sometimes even 30-year-old men, getting pregnant and giving rise to yet another generation of people destined to be unemployed, sucking up tax money, populating prisons and continuing the cycle of destructive behavior prevalent in that community.
Point out one thing racist in that paragraph.
Maybe Mary Mitchell could stop writing her bullshit columns about how everyone is to blame for the plight of her people except the face in the mirror and start running a daily feature of runaways and "missing" girls who turn up after a weekend away with some man they met on the party line or the computer who is going to make them a star. I noticed this same trend on the local news. How retarded can we get? Are we now going to launch a full scale investigation into every missing? Who is going to handle the rest of the jobs?
When will the media get sick and tired of getting all these reports of missings and stop putting them on? After awhile its going to be old news. Typical overreaction from the idiots in charge in this administration.
You are right. Nobody has the balls to standup and tell the truth about most of our missing reports.
How about we make 14 and under "tender age". Then start doing plans for all of them. Then see what the media says when 90 percent of the cars are down looking for them.
Then make Amber alerts on all of them and send them to the media.
When the media fails to pick up on one or give enough airtime to all 90 a day we will then publicly chastise them when something happens to one.
See if Mary Mitchell the blames the media cause she wont blame the parents.

At a recent northside Area rollcall we were told that HQ is looking hard at missing persons reports as a result of the young girls death. In essence, a more detailed approach by detectives following up on these cases. All well and good, except like every where else we are short handed. Resources are being wasted on the processing of juveniles, tying up detectives that could otherwise be following up on these missing persons or other important cases. I think it is time this department found a better way to deal with the large amounts of juveniles arrested everyday.
At most Areas, SVU is a dumping ground. The chief could care less about the jobs SVU handles, until one of their cases ends up in the media. Time to change that attitude also. Yes, SVU handles the "bullshit" cases. The stuff no one else would ever want to investigate. But, it really is not bullshit. Child abuse is serious shit, and these detectives do good work to get these cases charged.
True, the vast majority of missings return on their own, within hours or days. But every year a handfull turn into heater cases. Again, time to change the way these cases are handled from the minute the patrolmen arrives on scene. There are too many of these cases for the few detectives that are working in SVU.
SVU detectives are required to process juveniles, investigate missing persons, domestic violence, elder abuse and child abuse cases. That is alot of "bullshit" cases.
HQ wants to raise the bar, to avoid media scrutiny on these missings. It is too easy to report someone missing. And if you've been missing more than 3 times, there is another issue. And not calling them "runaways", changes nothing.
Maybe parents should be arrested for "frequent flyer" missings.
And what about that truck that went missing with the 6 mo. old infant inside? How many times do we have to warn these stupid people to take the keys out of the car, especially if they have to leave a kid or kids inside?
Awhile back, I ran the numbers for each area's caseloads in CHRIS.
On average, each area handles between 375 and 500 mising persons cases each month. The numbers are lowest in a/3 and highest in a/1; no surprises there. (This may have changed some in a/1, since the projects came down.)
We were always judicious in declaring a 'tender age' missing (for you non-police, that doesn't mean young, necessarily, but more like 'all high-risk cases or really old or really young') because you can't cry wolf too often before people turn a deaf ear.
These days, all the SVU lieutenants have stopped using good judgement and have started protecting their nice spots, especially in a/3. Alerts are being generated for obvious habitual runaways and drama queens at an alarming rate. They create the alerts because they don't have the experience or guts to make the call NOT to and our sergeants have decided it isn't worth losing a spot in the D because their lieutenant demands an alert for the most asinine of cases; they just generate them by the dozens in spite of knowing it isn't necessary.
If we alerted the media to even HALF the cases we get on 12 to 16 yrs olds, the media would stop taking our calls. They would soon learn what any GOOD youth dick knows; 90% of them are resolved within 24hrs and you'd fill an entire 30min news program just reading out the names, much less the details of each reported missing.
And don't even get me started on Amber alerts. Somebody should enlighten all reverends, politicians, relatives of politicians, the media, and even a few of our own bosses what is required to ask for an Amber Alert. Thank God the State Police establish the criteria, or our idiots would have us issuing those at a rate of half a dozen a day.
Truth be told, it's not MM's job to make her column a "milk carton photo array" of missing kids.
Once someone is reported missing, it's our job to make an honest effort to look for them. That's what we're paid to do. And whether we admit it or not, we're doing a crap job of it. It used to be we actually held cars down to search for missings. Rarely done now, due to the fact that most districts simply don't have the bodies to do it anymore. We used to hear repeated flash messages on missings. Rarely does this occur anymore. Dets, even the kiddie Dets., are swamped.
Hard to get a juvenile arrestee even processed by them in a reasonable amount of time. Desk Sgts. don't want to be responsible for them behind the desk. Beat cars tied down waiting for youth.
The cycle continues. Bashing MM here doesn't let us off the hook for not doing this job better than we have been, SCC. And MM surely isn't going to carry our water, that's certain. And Weis's blaming of our lack of follow up on "computer glitches?" Equally pathetic. The lack of hiring was going to show our seams in one way or another...this is just one example of our reduced numbers through attrition and a lack of concern from City Hall. Thanks again, Mayor Daley and Supt. Weis.

I work in SVU. We get upwards of 15 missing a day. Half are habituals. That poor child's death has got people up in arms. New Affairs (a bunch of useless jagoffs) has been calling non-stop, about almost each and every missing we get. Mom's ('cause we all know on the westside, daddy ain't nowhere in sight) are calling, wanting an Amber Alert "cause I heard from the crackhead on the corner that Lavontea was dragged into a car by the dope dealer on the corner."
People, listen up! Pick up the S.O on Amber Alerts & read it & carry it with you so you can show the good citizen who's filing the report.
Ultimately, it's the ISP that decides whether or not to issue one. And, it takes an act of God to do it. Custody cases, runaways & kids over a certain again (I can't recall right now because my brain is muddled with cosmos)don't meet the standard.
The WC in the district of occurrence is the one who has to call youth HQ & talk to the CO if he/she wants/thinks one should be issued, not the SVU det. From there, the Youth CO makes the determination as to whether or not to call ISP.
So, scream all you want, Mary, reverends, etc. The system was put in place to keep exactly this from happening...an overload of alerts issued for habituals, wards of the state on the looses for the weekend, dad's who decide they aren't returning the kids, etc.

How about keeping count of all the times you end up with a juvenile in the station and attempt to call mama or a close relative to come pick junior up. Most of the times I can't get anyone to answer the phone. But my favorite one is when you get mama on the line and she don't want to get off her fat ass to come and pick junior up.

Most of these missing persons are reported because mama doesn't feel like getting up off the couch to look for her kid. Use the police because they are a government agency. I guess the real issue is the parents of these so called missings must be a primary factor. I know what my kids do b/c I am a fucking parent, doing what I am supposed to do and not out drinking in a vacant lot or in lockup!!

There was an excellent comment in an article about mortuary workers really feeling the stress from having to handle all the homicide victims and their families. The comment was that Leak funeral home on the southside has had to handle 100 plus victims this year and the employees are having a hard time dealing with the carnage. 100+ victms waked at the same funeral home. That is over 25% of all the homicides in the city, and that is just one southside funeral home. Now count in Gatlinburg, Slaughter and a few other main stream, minority owned funeral homes and you have the lions share of homicides happening on the southside in one demographically dominated area. Also if you look at the "official" numbers released by the department it show that nearly 75% of all homicide victims are black. The fact of the matter is this, the black community is killing itself. Black on black crime is out of control and has been for decades. Everyone screams that this is a racial situation, you know what their right, it is. It is a black issue. The irreverends sit and scream that it is everyone elses fault and what are the police going to do about it. I got bad news for them, we have done everything we can, there isn't much else to be done, except sweep up after the parties over. I am not a racist, I hate everyone equally. The facts are the facts. If you don't like it, tough, because it is what it is. You want the violence to stop? Look at your community Irreverend Meeks, Mr. Phleger, Jesse and see the truth and start dealing with it.

Don't forget all the Criminal Sexual Abuse/Assault case reports made after the underage darling finds out she is pregnant, after being with her twenty something boyfriend. She then tells the parents she was raped but was too embarrassed to tell them. Of course the best part of it is when the brain child names the boyfriend in the case report and the real truth comes out and find out what their little darling was really doing.

Many years ago my partner and I drove down a side street on the Westside about 0300 and saw a parked car with the back door ajar. We stopped and discovered a sleeping boy about 8 YOA on the backseat. We ran the plate and it came back to the house right there. We rang the doorbell and Gramma answered. We asked if she knew the kid and she said that it was her grandson, and asked where was he. We told her and she said that the whole family had been out that night, got home around 0100 and must have forgotten him in the car. FORGOTTEN HIM IN THE CAR?!
And this is our fault?

Don't sell SVU short. SVU is a dumping ground, but not for the reason you might think. An example is Area Four which is the dumping ground for the only lieutenant, sergeants, and detectives (many who were legitimate former youth officers) who actually passed a test high enough to obtain their promotions by rank order off their respective promotional lists, unlike the connected, merit HGS buffoons who couldn't detect their asses with their own two hands and whose legacy is the unsolved murders of two off-duty policemen. Most of the screw-ups involved in these investigations were the result of management decisions made by exempts who never should have been hired at all!
SVU is the only unit where the victims generally do not have an IR number. Unlike the "dog shoots dog" crap across the hall, the SVU victim is hardly culpable when their six or seven-month-old brains have been shaken loose from blood vessels connected to the dura while being cared for by moms new jocker. And it's hard not to have sympathy for a seven-year-old girl who contracts gonorrhea after a weekend at their aunties house in 011, in stark contrast to the shitbird shot three times in the ass and legs working the tip.
So, you still want to be a big city homicide dick? If your smart, and want to make a difference, you'll get on your hands and knees and start graveling to get dumped to SVU.
The BOTTOM LINE is parenting.
The parent didn't realize the kid was missing for at least 24 hours.
The blacks don't want to listen to people like Bill Cosby who preach the truth about parenting. Only in the south and west side do you have day cares for the high school girls who get pregnant not one, but two or three times during their high school years. Don't be telling me that they have sex because they are poor and underprivledged, they do it because it is looked upon as gold for having a baby so young and the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are not only thrilled, it is not taboo to have sex at a young age (11 or 12) then start having babies.
These kids are then thrown away and brought up by the 65 y/0 great-grandma on welfare. It is a cycle that continues from generation to generation and the government feeds into it. Grandma is too tired to know what the 13 y/o great-grandbaby is hanging with. Mamma only comes out of the woodwork when her darling gets killed or maimed.
Got the picture? Because the police see it day in and day out in these districts. STOP putting feed into the trough and hopefully it will stop or at least slow down.
Why hasn't anything come out about time/date of death of the 12-year-old? Odds are she was dead before her family even reported her missing.
The murderers are from that community. They're the ones the pressure should be on, not the CPD.

SCC, give me the numbers on the data set you stated. You said most of the missing persons are black. What percentage of the 20,000 missing reports re black? What percentage is white? It would also be interesting to note what percentage are Asian (you know, the so called "model minority").
We stated "one figure we saw." we're sure if you call the Detective Areas, they'll run right out and get you the stats you crave.
Svu was short before I can only imagine how understaffed they are now. If violent crimes are way short you know SVU has no one there.

I could develop a list of 50 problems facing black America. Anything directly involving the quality of policing wouldn't even be in the top 30 or 40.

Therefore, I recommend an immediate use of federal stimulus money. Birth control. Free birth control to all comers. Make a male birth control pill and have it taste like and resemble a pretzel.

Oh and the snotty IAD person can throw a pamphlet at you in case you need some help! The next day you are to report to unit 376 and you will be assigned a headset. Oh and I almost forgot, you will sit there for an eternity until IAD does their investigation and then two clowns in bad suits will arrive and have you sign paperwork telling you that the department is seeking to separate you from employment. Then you can get an attorney and file an appearance at the Police Board. Then finally, you will wait and wait and wait for the hearing to be set and commmence.
THE ABOVE WAS NOT A FACTUAL EVENT IT WAS MEARLY WHAT HAPPENS TO REAL COPS WHO WORK HARD BUT GET FUCKED BY THE LYING NIT WITS OF THIS WONDERFUL CITY! But then again, we expect that from them. Its the people within(IAD) who for whatever reason feel the need to simply not care about the copper and not go the extra mile or to properly investigate.

I am a retired SUV Detective and asked a parent for a photo of there missing child to assist in the investigation, no I did'nt get the usual grade school graduation photo of someone 16 years old but the next day the parent came in and gave me a stick drawing of there missing son.Yes, SVU is bullshit at times

My kid is 20 years old and still has a curfew. A phone call to let me know where they are at is required.
98 percent of the time, when you ask mama where the little darling hangs out and with who? Mama don't know, mama usually doesn't know the names, phone #s or address of the little darlings friends either. I still know the names and numbers of my adult childrens friends.

Scc, I tend to agree with you ;however if you are going to make statements on a public forum ,in which you and another media outlet,pruport to be one of the highest 'googled' websites in Chicago, then you should qualify your 'facts' ,especially in light of this very sensitive topic.
Just a thought.
The entire SVU unit should be disbanded and all members sent back to patrol. Everything they do can be done faster and better by patrol officers. Missings, domestic follow-ups, youth processing...all should be done by beat coppers. Only child abuse cases should be handled by dicks and the city should have a central unit OF QUALIFIED PEOPLE to handle those cases.
Beat cops are more than capable of handling a missing or domestic follow-up and instead of depleting their ranks, the city should be adding to it.
Almost all of the units this city has are worthless. Vice, gangs, tac, DOC, should all be transferred back to patrol. Only a small narcotics units with actual UNDERCOVER officers (not tac guys) to gather INFORMATION about narcotics trafficing is needed. Search warrants, street level drug enforcement, all of this can and should be done in patrol.
The city could eliminate 70% of all exempts and instead promote qualified watch commanders who are actually in charge of their districts.
This department has way too many people who do nothing. Only coppers, dicks, sergeants, watch commanders, 25-30 commanders, and ONE Superintendent (with 4-5 assistants) are needed. No other bosses required.
I just saved $50 million for the city.
How is a 12 year old only in the 5th grade?
