Happy Days?

  • Mayor Daley today sloughed off a planned strike authorization vote by 2,000 Chicago truck drivers, saying he does not believe truckers would risk their "tremendous" jobs by crippling city snow removal, garbage collection and airport operations.

  • "These are tremendous jobs. ... They realize these are great jobs. ... You get a great salary. You get a great pension. You get great health care. You get sick days. You get happy days. ... Every day you want, you get off," the mayor said.
We haven't had a strike that has the potential to drive Daley completely nuts in years now. You can see he's teetering on the edge. A Teamster strike could completely torpedo his re-election chances and give potential other candidates a wide open forum to trash his mismanagement of the city. Remember, the unions helped remove 10 aldercreatures last election. Who says they can't unseat a wounded mayor?

I say they'll do it.
He's not going to fire 2,000+ drivers. That will be political suicide. As it is he's not to popular these days.

I say that if they do it we should jump on the band wagon and hold our own organized protest back to back at city hall. That way he'll be bombarded from more than one angle. The Sgt's. association should also hold one in conjunction or right after us as well.
FOP WAKE UP and piggy back to this ballsy move by the TEAMSTERS. Organize another protest for us. SET THE DATE and get the buses to the Areas and lets do it.
GET OFF YOUR ASSES because it will soon be re-election time for all of you. Remember a simple thing STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!

I hope they strike and bring the miserable runt to his knees.

Every city worker should support this strike to the fullest if it happens. This prick needs to be brought back to reality and launched from office.

I pray for multiple blizzards during this potential strike. I hope that Chicago is crippled and all over the international news again.

Daley keeps stealing from the taxpayers while the workingman gets screwed over.

I've worked for the city for awhile now and I don't recall ever getting a "Happy Day" off as the mayor puts it. Unions are in place to keep employers from screwing over the worker like the mayor tries to do every day. Don't believe for a second that this city is broke. The little corporal cries broke when its time to pay the workers but always has money for his pet projects and contractor friends. How about we cut the pay of the worthless aldermen or cut the numbers of their staff? How about we stop throwing 100's of thousands of dollars towards those who refuse to work for a living? Wake up middle class and start voting these a**holes out of office. We vote, we pay taxes, and everyday we get screwed! With the elections coming up we can finally send the message. DON'T MESS WITH THE WORKING MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Chicago is not only CORRUPT but POLLUTED.

Chicago is the only U.S. metro area that would fail to meet a tougher standard for smog-forming nitrogen oxides proposed Monday by the Obama administration.

The more stringent limit is intended to help protect people who suffer from asthma and other respiratory ailments. But Illinois officials contend they won't be able to do much about it without cleaner cars and diesel trucks, two major sources that are regulated by the federal government, not the states.

Companies in this environment feel they have the upper hand. They're treating workers like dirt - including the City of Chicago. Stand firm; stand together. Don't give away what generations before you worked so hard to achieve.

It's not as good of healthcare coverage as he and the alderthieves get and Ritchie wants to walk away from providing health care coverage in 2013. He says you can get a day off whenever you want . Guess what, Daley cut the balls off our F.O.P. many years ago. All the F.O.P. does is keep us in the dark about the lack of contract negotiations and then when we get shit on they say "Hey look what we, your unioin did for you". Case in point is all the hoops you have to go thru to get a day off. You just have to find some one on your watch and who will switch with you, do a to - from and agree what day it will and, and, and.... Boy oh boy what a deal !!!Current and past union have and had no bite behind the timid bark. Nothing they can do and Daley knows it. And as usual our contract expired years ago and the union says we are working for you. In my over 20 years not one contract settled on time and probably never will. Yet the aldermen give themselves a 6 % cost of living adjustment in one lump some and they all then say piss on the police and fire department and the Daley controlled news ignores it.

Somewhat off-topic but relevent. From the Tribune's editorial page: 21st District (Southwest Side, southwest suburbs): Democatic Rep. Michael Zalewski, son of 23rd Ward Ald. Michael Zalewski, was handed this seat in 2008 in yet another case of Illinois nepotism. The SouthtownStar reports that a police officer in suburban Justice used police resources to get information on Zalewski's Democratic opponent. The cop in Justice is related to a longtime political operative with 23rd Ward ties. Enough of this nonsense. The opponent is Terrence Collins, a Chicago police officer and lawyer who says he was spurred to run by this page's call for citizens to step up and challenge the political status quo. He has smart ideas about pension reform, health care costs, redistricting and job creation. Collins is enthusiastically endorsed.

A unions international decides which picket lines will be honored. The international is located in Washington D.C. What free water? I just sent out a check to the water dept that says mine is far from free.

I hope that our new Happy Days are retroactive. I'll add a couple of Happy Days to my weekend and go to Vegas where I can burn my retro check. The Kool-Aid tastes better in a clean ride.

1/26/2010 12:22:00 AM

Wrong again asshole. Teamsters and AFSCME had the balls to say no. The other unions kissed his ring. Daley laid off the lowest paid workers and saved management. Now he threatens truck drivers to cut 8 hour work days! Think about it. If they cannot work 20 hours a week, health benefits can be denied. They have no choice but to fight. Can police and fire also stand up to daley?

wrong, you dont seem to understand the moral of the story here - never give the city anything because you'll never get it back without giving up something else. those unpaid furlough days would come back to bite them in the rear. by setting the tone the teamsters have done a good thing

leave the collective barganing to the professionals, grasshopper, until you learn something

We should start a thread...

What can we do to support the Teamsters if they do go on strike?

Lets float some ideas people...

Go to the polls and VOTE REPUBLICAN! Like him or not we have a CPD member running for Cook County Board President.

Start calling Alderthieves Offices, we should post their phone numbers, all of them! INCLUDING the cell numbers the DCs have on their crackberrys.

Bring it up at any CAPS meeting...remember, Together We Can!

Minimize the generation of household garbage, especially food trash which caused real sanitary problems. Eat out as often as possible at places that have commercial garbage pickup. If possible, take as much of our business out of the city.

Encourage Whistle Blowers to come forward. Somebody who reads this blog has got to know someone who has some secret that can help bring down Shortshanks, Jody and the rest of the corrupt mob.

Let's get thinking and moving on this.

Teamsters strike very funny. A few years ago the cement truck drivers struck Bill Daley made a phone call and the joint council took over the local and the strike ended.FYI other unions cross picket lines all the time. The hotel intercontinental is still on strike 10 years. How do they get supplies in? You guessed it teamsters cross that line everyday. A unions international decides which picket lines will be honored. The international is located in Washington D.C. I give credit for the teamsters making a stand but everyone bitches about F.O.P. when was the last time any union had an effective strike in Chicago? They are all talk no action.

smartest post so far..

25 years ago,i worked at the tribune printing plant when we went on strike....it would have brought the company down, except that the teamsters crossed the picket line and did the deliveries.

You're missing the point. We want Daley OUT !!!
The next mayor , we can check him / her,so he/she doesn't have the omnipotent power and control Daley has.
Once daley is booted out, it gives us wiggle room to get a more manageable candidate-
and for the record, as long as its not a machine hack, or another Daleyite, or Stroger, I don't care if the next mayor is black ,white, asian or hispanic-male or female, republican or liberal,
AS LONG AS IT AINT DALEY, CAPISCE?

Sure, there are some plausible reasons to support a strike, but when you mention Streets and San, one can't help but think this is the department where workers enjoy massive amounts of sick days, where co-workers cover for each other in regards to those sick days and where supervisors have handed out slaps on the wrists to offenders and it is known among many in Chicago as destination for those somebodys that somebody sent.

Clout babies are not the poster children for modern labor, I'm afraid. This is not an "organized challenge to the mayor's power." This is simply another group struggling for a bigger spot on the lifeboat.

Good luck getting public support on this one, too.

Remember that police cannot refuse to cross picket lines. I support the City truck drivers but daley will fire their ass and then they will have a hard time trying to get their jobs back in the courts.

That will give daley the perfect excuse to privatize some more and sell of the equipment for a song to a clouted company.

Once the work is privatized and the equipment is sold what the hell can the Teamsters do?

they would have to sue in courts controlled by daley.

For now they are better off working and fighting the contract violations in the usual way, unfair labor practice and joining the mounting army of anti-daley workers to help defeat the tyrant in Feb 2011.

DUMP DALEY FEB 2011

I went to the Academy with Terry. Great guy!

The water dept. is already using private trucks that haul debris and dump fill. The drivers of these trucks are mostly from Eastren Europe and are supposed to be union drivers. I can guarantee you that they are not all union. I have asked Teamsters to card these drivers or have their BA's come out to the job site and card them. I have not seen one of these drivers carded. The big bad Teamsters will not even protect their own jurisdiction but they are going to go out on strike. Right.

City workers are for the most part a very undisciplined unprincipaled bunch. You will not get 40 % of the Teamsters to strike even if they authorize a strike. Daley will immediately hire scab drivers to fill the spots and have successfully broken the first union he could. If you don't think it can happen look at what Reagan did to the air traffic controllers. You think for a second that this country could replace air traffic controllers but we can't replace truck drivers . Come on people wake up.
