Alert Text Messages

  • Chicago police now will be able to alert the public instantly about everything from child abductions to crime-related traffic jams via a cell phone text or an e-mail.

The Police Department has signed up for Nixle, a free alert notification system that sends messages to registered users. The service in Chicago went live today at www.chicagopolice.org.

"We're just trying to get as many ways out there that you can look at what's going on at the Police Department," Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis said. The department's use of technology will continue to broaden, he said.

Half the battle is getting information out there in a timely manner. The highway signs are useless if you aren't driving by one when an alert goes out. But everyone has a cell phone. Now the challenge is getting folks to sign up for it.

This actually seems like a good move.

Who will input these alerts? When will we have time on the scene of a crime such as a shooting to input these texts. Is it going to be another notification on a person shot: Notify sgt, watch commander, area dicks, fusion center, news affairs and text an alert that traffic is tied up because there is a dead asshole in the middle of the street.......

It has been in use in many smaller cities for a while, a good way to get emergency information to the public...

But if they use it like the Emergency Broadcast System
was utilized on 9/11 then it won't mean anything except some body
gave a contract for the system...

I hope it works...

Stay Safe*

Except there's a state law that says texting while driving is an offense now. So are people going to pull over when they get their alerts? Hell no!

Weis compared Nixle to another social networking service, Twitter, where users write one another in 140 characters or less. He added that Nixle is secure and anyone who receives a message would know it's coming from Chicago police. Users will not be able to respond to alerts, but they can call police with tips, Weis said.

The odd thing is Twitter does certify accounts and all districts could have their Twitter feeds certified as legit feeds. Likewise with Twitter, users could fairly anonymously forward tips from the web, and via text on phones or Blackberry's

Seems like another useless service from a company with few users, that will end up with the same BS alerts you get from NotifyChicago.

Only in Chicago will they ban texting and later that month tell you they want to send you a text message to warn you about traffic jams. "I got your text, but I couldn't read it because you would have given me a ticket."
The Dumb stay dumb.

One of the dumbest ideas in department history!
Do you really think pookie cares that there is an amber alert for some poor little girl his friend probably kidnapped? Can the dealers all get this feature on their boost mobile phones they dump weekly?
What a joke this department is, we're short hundreds of coppers with no contract and this is what we come up with? And to answer your question, yes I am salty and no I shouldn't just quit.
Just a little fed up with the department swirling around the toilet bowl and to see shit like this deemed important makes me sick!

Yes. Until the first person who gets involved in an accident. I can see it now......" But your honor, I was reading the text alert the City of Chicago Police Department sent me. I thought I was supposed to read it as soon as it appeared on my phone."

Driver sues the department and the city for millions of dollars due to their negligence.

Standard text messaging rates apply. Who wants to get a text or tweet every hour about some twit that's missing or shot.

I called a two-car accident inbound on the Ford Thursday afternoon. I got the Chicago center first and then they passed me on to the ISP. Traffic was already backed up over a mile when I got past the wreck, ISP gave me the impression I was the first to call it in. Nobody in front of me seemed to give a shit, other than the wreck was interfering with their day.

Just saying.

Will we be exempt from the driving/texting law if we are reading these alerts?

This is where amber alerts should be posted so the libtards can be assured that every concerned citizen has them, and then the MSM can spend their resources doing invertigative journalism about judges and local pols. That ought to keep them busy until the second coming!!!

I think this is awesome. I think that every call that we are dispatched to we should send a text. Maybe then there would be a revamp in the way "911" calls are received and dispatched. "100-200 gangbangers with knives, bats, chains, and guns at 6801 S. Artesian." "There be 15-20 kids in the alley pla'in that bball at 6213 S. Green." "12 y.o. stopped by breathing 10450 S. State, Fire is not responding." Maybe somebody would actually see these bull shit calls that tie up 95% of manpower and revoke "911" privlidges of some of the co mun ity. If you make bogus and/or bull shit calls then your privi'dges be re VOKED.

This is really nothing new. College campuses all over America have students who are signed up for the same service. I think even the students at UIC have it available to them. We're just attempting to do it on a citywide level, so don't give WEISel or the Policy Group too much credit for this one.

Whatever......but I found out about this a month ago because somehow I was signed up without my permission and received a text! You should check it out and see if you are already signed up!

Actually they shouldn't receive any credit for it. It was in the works three years ago before the super came. It was a portion of the cpd website that was being developed. Guess its finally out.
