Miracle Recovery

  • Pedro Medina is getting ready to do the "unthinkable."

Told by doctors last year that he would be a quadriplegic after being severely injured in southeastern Afghanistan, the Illinois Army National Guardsman and Chicago police officer is preparing to lead the Police Memorial Foundation's sixth annual Run to Remember on Saturday.

"To represent fallen and severely injured officers is a privilege," said Medina whose right foot was shattered, and back and pelvis broken when a shelter toppled over on him during a mortar fight. "To participate in it and not be in a wheelchair, I'm just overjoyed,"

Medina, 35, said he doesn't know if he'll be walking or running, but added with a laugh, "It depends on what my former boss, Phil Cline, will be doing." (Cline said he will be walking).
The fact that he will be upright and even participating is a miracle and a testament to his spirit and hard work. In any event, thank you for your service and we look forward to your return to duty.

It is truly a miracle that Pete has made such a great recovery. I saw him at the Walter Reed Hospital when he was brought back from the middle-east. I had some doubts that he would regain full usage of his legs, but I'm glad to see he proved me wrong. We are talking about a guy with tremendous grit and determination who should never be underestimated. Pete is an an inspiration to all of us from 014 and I look forward to seeing him back in the beat-car with Dave.
