No More Practice Ammo?
Are we really this hard up?
- More cut backs. Say good bye to your free 100 rounds a year for practice. Order just came out Wednesday. Pretty soon we'll get slingshots because ammo is too much money. Rocks are free.
Next year's qualifying is supposed to be with an empty gun and you yell, "Bang! Bang!" at a piece of newsprint (targets are too expensive you know) and then you walk downrange and poke holes in the paper where you think the bullets might have gone.

The rumor is that they were going to drop this stinker the week P.O. Wortham was killed...
Besides, we can barely get any trigger time at a CPD range anyway because they're such hazardous waste dumps with poor ventilation and are shut down most of the time. You need a spiritual medium & tea leaf reader wearing a turban with a dunce cap sticking through the middle to figure out which ranges are actually open.
The powers that be didn't want it to look like they were trying to tell Policemen "fuck you" too obviously. The public would put it all together and figure out that what coppers talk about on this blog in regard to every decision regarding the Police Department centers around Shorty's payback, clout, politics and bullshit in general is factual for the most part.
It's all the Policeman's fault! Didn't ya hear?
The part about the news print as targets is true. I understand they intend to use copies of the Reader that feature any disparaging articles about Daley and his corruption. Watch for wagon crews to be dispatched to news stands to snatch up copies of the Reader on Thursday nights before they fall into the hands of the citizens.
With all the shooting going on throughout the city; and I can't get practice ammo. How much did it really cost? Especially not every officer got their two boxes each year. I know several guys who never practiced and never received practice ammo. This city is a joke.
ONE HUNDRED ROUNDS PER YEAR?
You're joking, right? That's it?
That's less than two rounds a WEEK.
I can go thru a hundred rounds in FORTY FIVE MINUTES, and I'm dog-ass slow. I've seen people burn thru 100 rounds in half my time without breaking a sweat.
What's next...take the siren from your cars? Maybe you can just stick your head out the window and shriek WooWooWoo.
What a startling lack of leadership from your Superintendent and from the CEO of the City Of Chicago.
DETROIT!!!I remember Bbay ans the Scurve I remeber Shoot to Kill and the old days but this is Detroit Concrete city of bullshit and clout makes you feel useless but callin for the ol days when we were the kings now it is the latins that pull the triggers and we see it on the blog or on the boob tube tube but it the southside but its the westside its the corporate liven it up and tearin it down talk about the inside couldnt get the olympics but we still have our pride in Detroit!! Detroit!! Detroit!!
"...and then you walk downrange and poke holes in the paper where you think the bullets might have gone."
A lot of people have been qualifying this way for years.
"Is that a .38 caliber pen?"
Besides, we don't need shooting practice, or actual training of any type; we've got Streaming Video!
"walk downrange and poke holes in the paper where you think the bullets might have gone.
"
And some would STILL fail...
why? only 15% of the department if not less are taking advantage of this.
Everytime that I've gone to rifle qualification a at the range, we've shot transition drills with pistol. They dont give you much to shoot with and theyre always apologetic about it but it is a live fire course. Shouldnt we be shooting more at live fire? Im not knocking the range staff. They do the best they can with it
If that order does come out eliminating practice ammo, get a copy of that order and save it, in case you need it to defend yourself sometime in the future. Didn't hit what you were aiming at? Getting sued for it? Blame it on shoddy training and non-existent ammo to train with.
Remember, most of your training records are false. don't believe it? Look up your own training records in the CPD computers. You will see they have you down as "trained" on every subject imaginable, for liability purposes.
You are responsible for that "training" that most of us never even heard about much less received.
Every streaming video counts as "training" and inside people mark the whole unit down as "trained" whether you were there or not.
When will that pile of shit ever hit the fan? Falsified training records of the entire police department. It's true, you can look it up.
They changed the 9mm ammo. It used to be 147 grain, now its 128.
I am not a gun person but I bet that it's a cheaper ammo now.
Blame the Admin. Mgr. at the Academy (A. C-H).
She f'd up the budget and put the wrong dollar amount down for this years ammo. She shorted it by a zero on the end of a large number!
Such a competent individual she is (he he)
She is the ghost payroller that everyone in the ft. office covers (she has every excuse not to come to work) and Howard has bought her I will work from home B.S. hook line and sinker!
She is in charge of the NMERT funds or should I say in charge of the NMERT thefts.
(Illinois Training and Standards Board needs to order an audit for the past three or four years - boy will they be surprised)
Has anyone had their gas masks checked since you got them = she is in charge of that too. (Your mask and filter should be re-checked each and every year)
Don't want to overload you too much with her incompetence. More will come later.
This is the best news yet lets save more money by closing the near north 1450 N.Larrabee .
You do get uniform checks which can be used for ammo purchases...
The consumer run on ammo pretty much ended a few months ago. Remington UMC is readily available and relatively cheap these days.
Time for a road trip to the suburbs.
The rumor is that they were going to drop this stinker the week P.O. Wortham was killed...

Not a rumor, it's a fact and 100% true.
When I qualified this year, the range instructor never even left the booth. When we finished we were told to take down our targets and pick up the brass. Walked over to the desk thinking he'd count the holes but when I walked out, I saw guys handing over their targets and they were just thrown away without anyone even looking at them.
The way this is going I won't be surprised if the department was moving slowly to having the Taser as our primary weapon.
What's next...take the siren from your cars? Maybe you can just stick your head out the window and shriek WooWooWoo.

ROFLMAO!

Is this lyrics from a Rage Against the Machine song?
A long time ago in a galaxy far away the CPD did not qualify for about 7 years. I don' remember the exact years but late 70's and 80's come to mind. The Reason: WE ARE SHORT OF MONEY. The Reason: THE RANGES ARE BEING UPGRADED and so on and so on.......
Nothing ever changes in Chicago.
Oh yeah, and I almost forgot.....
Never, Ever, Ever Trust a fed......
God Bless the CPD troops.....
God Save US.............
when have they actually even had 100 rounds for p/o's the few times i checked... was told to come back, or wait till after qualifications, or wait till some other class was done..
you've got to be kidding me - WTF
I practice on my own and I don't do it at a police range but shooting has always been my sport and hobby. I know most cops aren't interested in the shooting sports but at least get out to a range once in a while.
I've always bought my own ammo anyways because the city ammo is shit. I don;t want pookie to be around to sue me.
Streaming Video the best learning tool we have so far . We learn from what we see anyway so there is no need to have so much training which take you out of the district that is already short of man power so you can attend a training which can be done on streaming video or online in an hour or two let save more money by having the training on streaming video or online.
unreal
in the burbs i shoot more than a hundred rounds a month
your union should be screaming about this
its a liability nightmare
loev and loevy would have a hayday with this
failure to prepare is preparing to fail
If I yell "BANG" too loud at a citizen, will I get sued?
.....this is what happened in mayberry, deputy barney's police department suffered severe cutbacks and andy taylor dispensed only one bullet a year to barney.
SCC you are too much. Yell " bang,
bang " and then go downrange and
poke holes where you think the
rounds would have struck.
That's a real guffaw.
Since the department won't provide
practice ammo anymore, find out
where the gangbangers are getting
their ammo from and the P.O.'s can
go there and get their ammo too.
But only on certain days. This rule
must be strictly enforced so that
the officers and the gangbangers do
by chance confront one another and
lead to a nasty situation.
I use my own ammo and practice on my own time. The department isnt into real training so I do it myself.
eliminate all the hard ware and have us qualify with the Wii game. They can set that up and do it anywhere.

I was just thinking along those lines
They got that new simulation thingy the "laser shot" system; that was (according to the OTHER blog)coming to EACH district. It was at the AREA once, and had enough time slots for only 16 people per district to go.
This is why you don't need practice ammo any more...'k?
You got to be kidding. 100 rounds?
Your service pistol shouldn't even be trusted until you have run 500 rounds through it.
How many rounds does Daley's protective detail get to shoot?
Retire as soon as you can.
You will get your two rounds of ammo right after you get the pens that are supposed to be issued to you. I can and do buy my own pens, who doesn't, but they are an issue item. Ever get one?

Fuck you, it can also be used for bourbon purchases, to finance a night at the track and for suckholes like you to donate to their favorite charity.

Nah, that is what the neighborhood cats are for, I just swing them around and around by their tail, sounds like a real good old time siren too.
What's the likelihood that a big city police department would need ammunition? Nah, won't need it.
I hope that order does come out soon because I will forward a pristine copy right over to Fran Spielman, Frank Main, Ben Joravsky, Larry Yellin, Dave Savini, Chuck Goudy and any other media person who vaguely ever resembled an investigative reporter in this town.
The same way I do with every other order or communication with a hint of a possibility of embarrassing this corrupt goddamned administration.
Everyone who ever beheld the CPD with pride should do the same.
They changed the 9mm ammo. It used to be 147 grain, now its 128.

I bet you don't know anything about the oil in your car either. But you're probably not a car person.
You want steaming video?? If this story is true you can't have them. The video units at the police academy, fire academy and the CTA are being eliminated as of next Thursday. The streaming videos originate from the Academy Video Services Unit.
LMAO!!! Bang! Bang!
You do get uniform checks which can be used for ammo purchases...

If serious, this is the most retarded comment I have ever heard here - bar none
It's truly sad that the second largest police department in the United States doesn't have a basic equipment item, such as sufficient practice ammunition, to issue its personnel. It's also sad that it is labor intensive to locate a Chicago Police Range that is available for officers to practice pistol shooting on their own time, or even have the option to practice rifle shooting on their own time. I would bet that the majority of the personnel complaining about the ammunition shortage never used their 100 rounds of practice ammunition per year anyway. Just another Chicago Police Officer's excuse to complain about something.
I am in some serious self-protective mode out there. My intention each day is just to get to the end of my tour unscathed and untouched by scandal or the possibility of added liability through arrest etc.
You have to be damn insane now to go put your hands on someone and put them in jail. Won't happen with me, this police career is over, finito, done. The paychecks will continue for a few more years however, just like before, just a lot less stress.
The kicker is, one of the "old" range officers suggested letting POs who want to shhot more buy extra ammo from the department, The POs would save money and the city would make a little on a service charge of 5%.
Not onlly this, but because we would be buying more ammo, they city might even get a better price.
Not a bad idea, but he got dumped for honesty
15 years on the job and still I dont have a freaking gas mask from the Korean War and now they take away my 100rds for the year. This department is a freaking joke!!!
To sum it up....we're screwed! Be safe to all the PO's out there.
Deliberate indifferance. When the city fails to provide proper range ammo and range time, and when a "bad shoot" happens (and eventually that is inevitable), then the city and PD will take it in the rear big time. Loevy & Loevy will eat this shit up. "Bad shoot, officer not properly trained in the use of his firearm, deliberate indifferance of city and brass", it all spells a windfall for the lawyers and dirtbags, while the taxpayers have to deal out big cash and the Police are left having to fork over their own hard earned money (all whopping 2% raise and all) to buy range ammo. This is fucking pathetic...

Why would they eliminate that excellent training tool? 5 minute video at roll call? How can they train the department? Now they dump the only officers trained to make and produce videos? Have they given up on the idea of training videos? How else will we hear our leaders from 35th street discuss ethics and morality? What did the departmewnt gain? 1 sgt and two officers? Another example of the finest leadership from 35th street. Howie, what happened? Repeat after me, "NO". Trying saying NO and save what is left of the academy.
I know most coppers aren't of the mindset to be open to this, but I would recommend that anyone who still works the streets be up for purchasing their own practice ammo in bullk from their uniform allowance, and practice on your own. The life you save with your reserved shooting skills might just be that of yourself, your partner, or a family member. And before you naysayers bash me here on this blog, aren't the people I mentioned a few sentences ago worth it?

Do you ever read the label on the box ? 9mm is usually 124 grain these days. Most Depts stopped using 147 grain 9mm due to excess penetration. No shit you are not a gun person...No such thing as 128 grain.
Why have a video unit when you can out source it to Peter Karl Productions who was paid 4.7 million dollars for his last contract. That by the way, just expired. He produces those fine Crime Watch programs on cable that no one watch's. Lets see he does work for police, fire, CTA Park District. Great idea lets eliminate these units and pay Peter Karl millions of dollars that the city does not have. Lets make it another no bid contract.
"Why have a video unit when you can out source it to Peter Karl Productions who was paid 4.7 million dollars for his last contract. That by the way, just expired. He produces those fine Crime Watch programs on cable that no one watch's."
Hey! That's not true! Whenever I've had a few drinks and I'm up in the middle of the night, there's nothing like tuning in "Crime Watch" on one of the city's brainwashing channels, for a few laughs!
Streaming Video, the only "training" we get, is gone??
Awww...in the past two weeks we've seen "Transgender Community", "Tansgender Traffic Stop" and now "Alternative Lifestyles!" Nothing like ramming this down our throats!
I can't wait to see what they've got in store the week before Bud Billiken!
It'd be nice to see something once in a while that is actually job related or more importantly, addresses officer safety.
Unfortunately the coppers on this blog suggesting that you spend your own dime and your own time training might have a point. The city (the mayor) doesn't care about you, your partner or your family. So it's squarely on you to know how to save your own skin.
Buy a box of ammo and shoot it now and then. Go to a shooting class.
www.teamspartan.com, www.womenstactical.org (say what you want, they've hosted some big name, nationally-known trainers) and www.itoa.org are good places to start.
Document your training. Get certificates from classes you've taken and keep track of your shooting practice in a notebook, because you can't depend on CPD to do it and if, God forbid the time comes, it'll be you on the stand, all by yourself, defending your actions.
...and now back to YOYO Training;
You're On Your Own!
