Officer Killed - South Side (UPDATED)

Word trickling in - officer shot on the south side, possibly 61st and Racine.

Will update as able.

UPDATE: Chicago Breaking News:
  • A Chicago police officer and another person were shot near West 61st Street and South Racine Avenue at about 3:50 p.m., officials said.

The shooting occurred at a police facility used to house special units. Preliminary reports indicate the officer was shot in the head while walking out of the building.

Ambush? This is not good at all.

Shooter in custody and wounded. Chicago Breaking News changing the story as we try to update. Sorry if the links are out of date as soon as we post them.

UPDATE: Channel 5 reporting the Officer has died of his wounds.

UPDATE: Police Officer Thor Soderberg was shot and killed on today's date following a struggle with an offender who disarmed him. He leaves behind a wife and countless friends and coworkers.

We apologize for deleting numerous comments listing Officer Soderberg's name prior to proper notifications being made. That is standard practice here. We also had to delete a number of comments placing blame for the officer's death. There is a time and a place for those types of comments and this isn't the time or the place.

This officer was shot as I was getting off work in my north side district. I am near retirement but still, after all these years, when I hear a policeman has been killed I feel an anger and a sadness that is hard to explain to non-police.

Condolences and prayers to the family who, about now, is getting the shocking news that their loved one will not be coming home today.

Remember always this officer and never forget who makes this police department run several thousand officers under strength.

Rest in peace brother.

Suntimes reported the following

A Chicago Police officer was shot in the head and killed this afternoon during an apparent robbery outside a South Side police facility.

The officer was shot at 3:48 p.m. at 61st and Racine — the old Englewood District police station that is now used by the department’s targeted response and gang enforcement units.

The officer was an instructor at the police academy who was temporarily assigned for a week to work the street as part of police Supt. Jody Weis’ summer anti-crime initiative, sources said.

He was shot in the head in a parking lot outside the facility in an apparent robbery attempt. At least one other officer shot the suspected robber in the chest, but he was not killed, the sources said.

Police have not released the officer’s name pending notification of his family

When will it stop?

Do the inhabitants of Englewood want it to stop?

Does society need it to stop?

Does the political will to make it stop exist?

Will those who have an active interest in keeping this foolishness in play whether by design, not so benign neglect or moral atrophy and pure cowardice(shortshanks, the runnin' dog clergy, the alderfools, the resolute non-contributors and even j-fled) finally find enough spine to actually put concrete steps in place to bring this madness to an end?

no one worth a damn, gives a good damn other than the Police who pay the freight for trying to bring some semblance of order from chaos.

We pray for our departed brother, his family and his family in blue.

May a special hot fire be stoked for the offender(s).

We didn't create this crisis in Englewood or other garden spots of the city.

We're tired of seeing our brothers being taken away from us.

We're tired of shortshanks, the alderfools & j-fled's empty words of false gratitude and eye-wiping for bright T.V. lights.

In their eyes the only good copper is a dead one.

They take special joy in telling us in every way possible how little we mean in their grand plans and how replaceable/disposable they think we are. The people take this for gospel and follow their lead.

"They said it was just another Cop..."

May God mercifully and gently accept the soul of this officer. I had a chance to briefly work with him and knew him to be a kind, funny and gentle soul. His death saddens my heart and my prayers are extended to his family. Those of us at the Academy mourn his sensless loss.

He was a hero whose strength was displayed most in his kind demeanor. His bravery and commitment isproven through his sacrifice.

Godspeed, Officer. Rest well.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Well - here is an update..........

At the news at 9 P.M. this evening. FOX 32 news decided that the Drew Peterson news about the appeal was the breaking news for the evening. The second story was the fatal shooting of a Chicago Police Officer....... Hum......... I just blocked Fox 32 News from my remote.

How can they show the Peterson news over a a Chicago Police Officer being killed in the line of duty ???

Shame on you Fox 32.

I urge others in contacting the powers at Fox 32 in our outrage. How could they do this ? Oh, maybe they owe something to the office at the 5th floor ?

Pity them.......

My prayers are with the family of the Officer...... and with all of the 7th District which has seen so much violence in the past few months.

May he rest in peace, Amen. His work is done. My prayers go to the officer and his family and his co-workers.

I'm a citizen with a question. What can your union do for you...can you take to the streets, walk shoulder to shoulder and protest the officer shortage, in light of the brazen actions of criminals and loss of fellow officers in the line of duty?

You have the backing of citizens who fear for their lives and realize the horrible situation they AND the men and women of the Chicago Police Department are dealing with. And there is one lone newspaper reporter by the name of John Kass who does tell it like it is.

Ladies and gentlemen, what can you do as a group to get the attention of Daley? What can the public do to help you? We want to help you in any way we can. You are between us and the criminal, and we want to show you that we have your back and appreciate what you do. Tell us how we can effectively help you.

Just a guess, but I suspect they didn't have the package ready to run at 9 pm - most likely because the news conference was too close to air, and they were still working on the piece.

When they touched on it briefly as the second story, they said "more on this in a few minutes".

Sounds like they were just trying to buy a little time, but I could be wrong, and maybe they do just suck...who knows?

this guy did it all right and still he was killed. My God, the offender knew he was the police and did not care. They (criminals) do not respect us, or more importantly fear us. This man, like Worhtham IV was a good man, a family man, and cared about people. I don't pretend to have the answers, and I can't blame J-Fled, or Daley or Masters. If I had to lay blame, it would be with the offender himself, his family, and the scumbag lawyers that continue to sue policemen for sport. We have a Department full of officers that are afraid to do their job for fear of a law suit. When we don't police proactively, by being aggressive, we get this. A man completely unafraid to take on a policeman, one on one and kill him. Until we repeal the law that says you can sue a copper, like you can't sue an ASA or judge, crimes like this will continue. Thor was a great guy, a good cop, in good physical health and a firearms instructor and he was still over powered and killed. If this doesn't give you pause, you should not be on the job.

He showed great professionalism and he really tried to make a difference.

I've been in tears since it happened.

Again we must lower the flags to half staff, put the mourning band over the star and try to find answers from the loss of yet another Police Officer.
We are awash in feelings of deep sorrow, white hot, blinding rage, a smouldering hatred of the mentality that breeds the lack of value for human life; regardless if it wears a badge or not.
Tears of sadness, tears of rage...we want to lash out, scream out, all the while asking, "Why is this allowed to go on?"
We look for answers, knowing full well that some questions will forever remain unanswered until the day we stand before God and even then, there are no guarantees.
How can this happen, why did this happen, God in your infinite wisdom and mercy, please reach down and touch the souls of the people who have no sense of impulse control and help us put an end to this senseless madness. Merciful God reach down and also touch the hearts of your servants and shepherds who wear the blueshirt, that may not despair at the sorrow they feel and the evil they face. Grant your servants strength and wisdom.
Dear Lord watch over this fallen brother of ours whom you have called to your kingdom, grant him eternal peace and life everlasting as your child and we pray that he in turn now watches over us, in your great name.
Brothers and sisters, now is the time for mourning but there is a time of reckoning coming. All of the evil hearted will be called on by God in His good time.
There will be an accounting for all the mismanagement, all the misinformation and all of the reckless acts of ineptitude by those who are charged with leading not only this department, but this city as well. God is watching and God never forgets. Semper Fi and bless all of you men and women who drive the cars with the funny blue and white paint job. To the family of P.O. Soderberg, my condolences and prayers of strength to you all.
Sorry SCC for the long rant.

We do realize that war has been declared on the Police by Daley Inc., the news media, the aldercreatures, j-fled and his minions.

When people see that the powers that be have openly declared war on the protectors and the law enforcers are marginalized, disrespected and stripped of their standing, stature, authority and even humanity, what is there compelling people to have any regard whatsoever for The Police if those who fancy themselves to be the masters of The Police have no regard for The Police other than considering them to be a nuisance, a drain on resources and and obstruction to their Utopian vision?

If The Police have no stature and no authority, then the people themselves are in grave danger of being overrun by that which the Police are sworn to deny entry to.

...Such as it is at the present moment in time and it's going to get worse.

We need the support of the few remaining upright people who need and want their Police Department back!

God help us all...

The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger. Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

Great post. Really says it all. And, trust me, there's more than "a few remaining people" who respect the police, appreciate the police, teach their children to uphold the law and respect the police, etc. It's our government who created this mess and the problem is Illinois politicians no longer stand for the people, represent the people or even relate to the people. Something very, very major has to change or we are truly all doomed. I think that has become very obvious.

God bless the officer and his family in this sad, sad time.

Though I am a Detective, this is the first time I have ever been at a scene that involved the death of one of us. I had to take a moment because the pain I felt seeing him and the sadness I felt watching those officers around us (some knew him and was shedding tears, others just hurting for one of our own) was really too much for me to bear.

My sisters and brothers in blue, take care of yourselves. Take care of your families and take care of each other. Let the people that are important to you know that more often than not. God has not promised another moment to any of us. If you would have been at that scene, you would truly understand why my heart is still hurting just as much that moment, today.

Officers from all over saluted him as he left the old 7th District and as they brought him in for further examination. It made me even more proud to be a part of this family, but it also reminded me of the dangers of our job. My heart has been heavy for so many reasons. This has given me the final direction in my life and I am now leaving to try and enjoy the years I have left.

Smile every day, pray every day and remember the blessings you have every day in your life!

(Retired P.O.)

FYI, FOX 32 was camped out overnight at the academy and interviewed everyone. They stayed at the academy all day covering events. They may not have covered the story to your staisfaction but on Thursday they were very thorough.

Dear Citizen......
First, thank you for your concern. It helps Officers to know that there are a citizens that are concerned.
Secondly, with many groups and organizations out there that don't support the Police, there needs to be civilian organizations that do. Strong voices from the average Joe on the street. We could use all the PUBLIC support we can. When the tide changes and the public are under the impression we are the good guys, things will change. It is a simple kind word to passing the word to friends and family. Kinda like paying it forward. Instead of focusing on .01% of bad cops, focus on the good Officer's and speak about them in blogs, write to the CPD, or whatever department. WE NEED THE SUPPORT of you to succeed to take the streets back.
Be vocal about Jody Weis and his ineptness, as well as Mayor Daley's ineptness and nepotism. Keep tabs on them and see the scandals and the backdoor deals and call them out. Do not believe in the news, they are in Daley's back pocket. John Kass is the only reporter you can trust.
We need the cooperation of the citizen to come forward when they see a crime, to keep their eyes peeled for crime and report it when it is happening. That helps the Officers and Detectives immensely. Alot of citizens are terrified to talk to the police. Talk, report, help the Officers.
Thirdly, VOTE MAYOR DALEY OUT!!! He is the enemy of the Police. He hates us and has from knee high to a grasshopper. almost 4 years without a contract or a raise and he has slapped the CPD in the face with a 2% raise a month ago. 2% when we are in a recession/depression and the city is so expensive that most Officers have to take 3 jobs to make ends meet. We can't live outside the city as alot of other Departments are allowed. So with our pay and salary and non existent raise that was retribution from Mayor Daley, because CPD marched on City Hall.
We all know that The City of Chicago is corrupt. Those that are the average citizen don't know HOW CORRUPT. Look into the corruptness, question it and demand answers. And then go and be vocal about it. ORGANIZE.
We are down 6 THOUSAND OFFICERS. That is why crime is up. There is no man power and basically CPD has been handcuffed by the Mayor and the liberals and have made CPD ineffective. from 1990 up until 1998 CPD was in a bad spot with crime. The streets were taken back with alot of hiring and good police work. The bill for more Police was brought on by President Bill Clinton and put alot of great cops on the street. Now forgetaboutit........ They might as well give us feather dusters in our holsters. Too many bullshit lawsuits that would be thrown out in any other city are given to the ghetto mutts... We call it hitting the ghetto lottery. Have a run in with an Officer doing his/her job and get arrested, sue the Officer, The City pays and you are rich. Times have changed for the worst.
Civilians WE NEED you to step up and simply support The Police. Without your support and OUTRAGE of what is going on in the city everyone is doomed. You will be reading about more Officers like Officer's Solderberg, Wortham and Valdez. Some might become numb to this.... None of us EVER get numb to it. If you want to get involved help the CPD in anyway possible. Write your Congressman, State Representative, hold rallies in support of CPD. Vote the Mayor out. WE NEED CHANGE, alot of change. And the beautiful City of Chicago will no longer be a war zone.

You said it! Or, at least, give our domestic efforts equal footing with our international efforts. We have plenty of people that need help within our own borders.

And, before a private citizen of the USA sponsors a private school in Africa, how about an identical school or effort in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood or Washington, DC or Newark, NJ or Appalachia or the barrio in Los Angeles or Any Poor Town, USA ?

The USA gave Oprah, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and many others the opportunity to become gazillionaires, not Africa. We, individually and collectively, have to get our priorities in proper order.
