Police Shooting

In the middle of the mayhem on 04/05 July, offender with a gun is shot by police:
  • A Chicago police officer shot a male suspect who pointed a gun at him and at least one other officer early this morning after they tried to disperse a large crowd in the street, police said.

A spokesman for Police News Affairs did not know the condition of the wounded person.

The shooting happened about 2:15 a.m. in the 100 block of North Leamington Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side. In a statement, police said uniformed officers responded to a call of a disturbance at that location and found a large group gathered in the street.

Officers are OK. The usual outcry that the police should have subdued the gunman with tickles and feather pillows has ensued.

So what's the deal with the police clearly not enforcing Chicago's fireworks laws? Pro-grade fireworks all night long in my 'hood and it's just allowed to continue without intervention, year after year.

Is this an unofficial CPD policy? As a citizen, I don't understand, and frankly it undermines my opinion of the police, who are obviously just looking the other way. There's no way officers aren't aware of these law breakers.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW FEW OFFICERS ARE OUT WORKING ON THE STREET? You really aren't paying attention to what you are reading here.... The exchange off violent crime prevention over fireworks prevention is the reason for the unchecked fireworks displays... The 3-4 blocks around a station would tie up every Officer out there just for the processing of these illegal fireworks posessors. P.S. Let us filter thru the firework booms to arrest the gunshot boom offenders. Viva America!!!

Close. Masters Masters Masters is the guy Daley put in as J-Fled's Chief of Staff when J-Fled wasn't answering the phone messages from Shortshanks fast enough. Masters was put there to tell J-Fled, "The mayor is on the phone." J-Fled actually thought he was going to be given free rein to destroy the CPD rather than at Daley's direction.

Be glad they are shooting fireworks in your neighborhood. The police are responding to the idiots in the many other neighborhoods who are firing off hand guns, shotguns, and automatic weapons. There are just not enough officers on the street to handle ALL the calls for service.

I understand the line, 'don't make laws you can't enforce', but seriously, there are more pressing issues like going after the gang-bangers.
I presume that this rule is there so idiots can't sue someone for being stupid. For example the guy who blew his face off, or the other one who blew his arm off.
Sort of along the line of, 'I told you so', but you did it anyway.

The courts also ruled that you do have the power to detain and cuff, as long as it is REASONABLE. It all falls under REASONABLENESS, and for most of what we do we are covered under COLOR OF LAW. If you can articulate why it is reasonable that you handcuff someone and why it is reasonable that you stop them, you are doing your job. If you cannot, perhaps you should go hide in the CAPS office or find a nice safe job in a cubicle somewhere. The police can stop people. And handcuff them. It's kind of in the job description. Otherwise, no one would ever have to stop for us and we would be knda useless...like you. Or masters. Or jfled...

7/06/2010 07:22:00 AM

As I see it....Masters is a 30 something young guy that is in Daley's inner circle...used to work out of city hall. Has some military background, is heavily degreed (I think in law...)... is not and never was a police officer. J-Fled was given the job, and Masters was moved over by Daley to keep an eye on J-Fled... It's basically a political move...this way Daley can publicly have an outsider (jfled) come in as a new boss, but have him on a leash by connected insider that is not really known outside of the inner circle. Business as usual.

7/06/2010 07:22:00 AM

No, not correct. He was formerly a gopher for retired Alderman Bernie Hansen. Son of a retired judge and precinct captain basically he was daley's yes man for public safety until Daley fired Weis' hand picked chief of staff out from under him and installed Mike Masters.

So I guess you could say Masters is daley's guy in the police department. Masters, never having been a police officer himself, has been seen around town in uniform sporting a gun, shiny gold star and looking all self important and police like.

Did I mention Masters was never a police officer but now dresses like one? Masters apparently became a police officer by mayoral edict, remember the immaculate conception? That is sort of how Masters became the police.

A violation of the law but this is daleytown so who is going to challenge him?

"He's sort of like the eyes and ears of the superintendent, even if he's with the superintendent," says Alderman Walter Burnett (27th), a member of the City Council's Police and Fire Committee.

Masters is suspected of being the one actually talking when jody weis's moves his lips.

Masters supposedly issued orders that a CR number would be generated each time his name was mentioned in a negative manner on this blog. Needless to say he was mentioned quite a lot and not with love and kindness.

Does that about tell you all you need to know about masters?

I agree about the fireworks, why make them illegal when the police doesnt have the resources to enforce the law.
All those tax dollars going to Indiana and Wisconsin when Illinois is hurting for dollars.
Make fireworks legal on the 3rd,4th of July, and New Years Eve. All other times make them illegal. At least you make money on the sale and taxes of fireworks. That way we do not have Joe Citizen coming on here asking why we do not enforce the law that prohibits fireworks in the (broke/corrupt)state of illinois.

7/05/2010 11:35:00 AM

with all due respect, citizen, as fellow citizen, I suggest you read all archives for SCC dating back four years.

It might help you understand why our CPD Officers are stretched beyond thin, therefore forced to be selectively reactive. Proactive, not so much.

btw, they were shooting fireworks off timber loft buildings in our 'hood'.

Despite obvious potential for catastrophy, no building burned down.

Honestly, much prefer intimacy of viewing pyro neighbors any day vs. navy pier/taste gangbanger cluster-f.

btw if you're citizen who intends to learn/benefit from SCC, perhaps you should loosen up on use of word "clearly".

So as long as you officers work your ass off, you won't get more help. You are working against your self-interests my friend.

Guess what 025th District dogass!? You should quit and save yourself the embarassment of what you just said. Yes, the mayor sucks and Weis sucks and the bosses suck, but guess what? You're still the police out there. How terrible to work in a district where people are still going out there and locking these assholes up and trying to put them in the penitentiary. Yes, the court system sucks and they get out early. So that means they win? You just give up and let them run wild? Fuck that and fuck these motherfuckers, put somebody in jail and stick together, be the police again. Bossess will be bosses and the mayor will always suck.

Double merit Lt OV is political groupie who lies and stabs to get his way. Do not go along with his incompetent policing or you deserve the trouble you get. 189 knows his game and is not afraid of saying it. You are warned.

Or masters. Or jfled...

Damn straight you better read up on your laws and general orders dude. Once you restrict a person's movement and they cannot leave on their own free will you just made an arrest. Why don't you ask all the officers and detectives who got hit with punitive damages recently - just for doing their job years ago when the dept orders weren't even issued. Good luck in the federal pen at the rate you are going.
*Oh and I like the part where you said "most of what we do" is covered under the color of law. Or the part where you said "its kind of in the job description". Brilliant. YOu got to be a merit boss right?

Excuse me sir, my point is that if we are short and people continue to work hard, then they are working against their self interest. You got that? I ultimately care about my fellow police officers. Every hot call, every 1A job, domestic, etc... I am there!
