As explained immediately above this post, we're laying off the Sarcasm and Silliness for a moment. Anything you'd like to discuss that isn't related to yesterday's death of Officer Soderberg, leave it here and we'll get to it. Eventually.

i think we need to march at city hall again. if the officers can not protect themselves they can not protect the citizens of this city. we need to hire more officers. there are still 10-99 units on afternoons responding to a man with a gun calls. the FOP needs to step up!

How can anything we think about or say not be related to our officer's senseless, untimely, and brutal death? This will be heavy on all of us and in our hearts today, tomorrow, and for months and years to come. There is nothing more important to feel and talk about. May he rest in peace and may the son of a bitch that killed him, when his time comes, suffer and rot in hell forever. I'd like to be there to make sure he does.

Are the security details of the, mayor, burke, city hall, hq, understaffed?

Why are all police parking lots and garages not access controlled?

Why are light duty officers not assigned to each police facility, inside and out, strictly for security?

Why is it that patrol is given the least resorces?

It's time all the above are corrected!

From the "Chicago Breaking News" comments section:

From J. Daniels on July 7, 2010 6:35 PM

"Thanks to Mayor Richard M. Daley this officer got a paltry raise and had to wait over three years to get it and will not live to see his retro paycheck, due to be paid August 9, 2010. On top of that, Daley forces the Chicago Police Department to operate several thousand officers under budget.

It is apparently cheaper to pay for an officer's funeral than to hire enough officers to do the job.

This officer's blood is on your hands Daley!

Remember this on election day when you go to vote for Mayor on Feb 22, 2010."

Remember also that Daley begat fools like Weis, O'Keefe (thanks for the great equipment and cars, Ted), and Masters.

I'll say this here as it has no place in a post for well wishes. My grief would be lessened considerably, were this department no so impotent from it's management. I find myself with more ire toward the city than the savage, and my level of ire there is incalculable right now. I actually find myself wishing to be back in the sandbox than here right now. All of you that have had my back, thanks, I will always have yours. Stay alert, stay alive, remember that the one more rule should apply to us too, carry an extra, spend a half stack, your life is worth at least that much.

I am so sad to hear about one of your own guys! This city is so fucked up. And Daley will attend the funeral giving you his same old shit speech knowing that your guys deserve only a 2% raise for the shit that you deal with on the street. Its fucking bullshit! I am also tired of hearing that you decided to take the job that it was not forced on you!

Dear Scc:
This is a reply to 7/7's 10:47pm's comment on yesterday's thread. I didn't feel it was appropriate to reply at that time. What can be done? For starters, the citizens of Chgo need to gather and complain because the officers can't do it. The politicans won't listen to us, they don't look at us as constituants, they don't look at us as taxpayers, they look at us as a liability and as crybabies and as one politican put it "untouchable". It has to come from the citizens-they have to say enough is enough. Now how that is going to happen is a different story, I don't have the answers, maybe someone else does. Well, I do have one answer, vote out all encumbants- maybe they will get the message. Especially our city politicans. When they vote themselves a raise for a partime job then tell the citizens we don't have enough money to keep you safe, so deal with it, while the king and some alderthieves have paid, armed bodyguards, then I would think that the citizens would rise up and revolt-but no, they haven't! All I know is that we don't have cars or people or working equipment or bosses that back us. I am a boss but a lowly one, so all I can do is stand with the officers, back them up on calls and their decisions and pray it all works out, and that they all go home safe. Yesterday's tragedy I don't think had anything to do with the number of police out there, but just the insanity that is day to day living in some communities. These are the people that the police are hand to hand fighting every day. These are the bad guys that beat and kill police officers every day. You hear a small fraction of what goes on in this city with respect to the actual crime on the citizens or the crimes perpertrated on the police. And that is nobody's fault except the media, plain and simple. What kind of journalists are the schools' churning out? Investigative reporting is trolling a blog for a bite! And yes, when police are battered, spit upon, bitten and shot, it is a crime and it should be punished. The judges need to start putting people behind bars for a very long time. Society needs to look inward for a solution, instead of blaming the police and everyone else for their problems. Society is too PC now for any inward reflection and too PC to put the blame where it belongs. It's also about the judges, VOTE THE JUDGES OUT, the ASA's and the defense attorneys-they are the problem. VOTE OUT THE STATE'S ATTORNEY. The judges are letting people go, the ASA's don't approve felony and when they do the judge denies probable cause or finds them guilty in the end and gives them the minimum or probation. Offenders are on parole and they committ a crime-so that should revoke their parole, right? NO- the county doesn't issue warrants for any crimes, only for some. If they did wrong on parole, they did wrong. VOTE OUT THE SHERIFF. If the defense attorneys don't get their way they just make shit up. And the "other attorneys" and I use those words lightly, they are more like evil sharks, sue the police departments and officers. The police department's pay, the juries find us always guilty, the city blames the police and blah, blah, blah. The animals know our hands are tied and they are responding in kind with violent crime-they are getting away with it day in and day out-what is the deterrant? Not enough cops, not enough judges and asa's with guts and too many gutless evil sharks. Too many chiefs and not enough indians, and not enough horses to carry the indians around!! Hey J-Fled, if we don't have horses we can't get out there!. Three hours in the station every tour waiting for a horse is ridiculous. Okay I"m done. Rest in peace, office.

I was near where the media was staged today and heard a few of the reporters make notice of J-Feds abssence at the scene of a Chicago Police Officers death. One of them even commented that he was probably too afraid to come to the scene in case gunfire was to erupt. I heard them gripe that there were hundreds of P.O.'s as well as a dozen or so reporters dealing with the sweltering heat while J-Fed was too lazy or scared to come on scene, and wanted to do a press conference at headquarters. And then when I get home and watch the news conference this piece of shit has Jimmy Jackson do it for him. How the hell can you be a respected leader when you can't even show up to the scene where a fallen brother in blue has passed away and then not even have the goddamn courtesy to give the press conference hours later at headquarters. I'm really starting to hate this department and I think back to when I was a little kid and all I wanted to be was a Chicago Police Officer and I wonder why? And then I get really depressed when I think of how much longer (years and years) before I can retire.

One reason that chicago has crime like it does, in caparisons to some forgein countries is due to the fact they do not allow the "Animal run unchecked across the country" Here in my city if police even think of doing there job!!! my God they (The management, Shortshanks, shit heads lawyer)will hurt you. I know some will read this and say that's wrong you wrong!!! I never said you have to like, just look at from this side. Dailey is going to sit back again along with Weis, Masters, Kirby and other selected trained monkeys and watch us tear each other apart. What happened to this officer is a direct attack againest all officers. To me I feel, this was an open clear cut example of war on the police today. Some BS Revs will say it was not the fault of the offender, but that of every police officer for alway arresting this waste of air. If this situation does not open the eyes of every police officers "that the war is hitting home", then I do not know what will? This PO was not arresting him or fucking with him, he was doing his job and trying to go home. But, before he could get there he was murdered by some lawless, Godless animal. The orks have taken over the kingdom time to take it back.

Please, Please, do not go on a job alone. Who cares if there is a backlog for hours and hours. Thats not are problem. Don't take a job just so the dispactchers can clear the board. Let the citizens wait for their job to become a priority, and when they yell at you when you and a partner get there, hand them their Aldermans phone number. (Oh they will not be in the office, its a part time Job. give them 311.)

Again there is no such thing as giving another officer a wave off, wait for your back-up. Stay Safe and go home to your family.

Yes, Daley has to go AND his merry band of 50 thieves. A total housecleaning is in order. And to the naysayers who feels, that the fix is in, that no one else is competent enough to lead our city, that all politicians are crooks (though this may have some validity to it)--STOP IT!!! It is that mindset that has allowed him to be re-elected term after term after term. I am not a police officer but my occupation causes me to work closely with them. I have numerous friends in law enforcement and I am sick and tired of attending funerals of slain officers. It doesn't matter your race, policitical affiliation, economic standing or zip code--each and every one of us has to step up to plate and take this city back. House by house, block by block, community by commuity, zip code by zip code. If we dont, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Stay safe out there officers!! The criminal element has nothing to lose yet you have everything to live for.

We know the problem mentals pose to the police, public and society in general.

These people need to be criminally housed. If you have a mental who is an offender in a criminal act seek criminal charges by obtaining at least a CB number in addition to taking the person for evaluation. Don't just drop the person off at a hospital without doing a criminal report.

In my 20 plus years I have seen the psych drop off rather than the criminal investigation. As a result, violent mental are not labled as such and are not housed or properly treated.

Do it as a favor for the last officers killed in the line of duty.

Im so pissed, I dont care what anyone thinks, and say what I need to say.
1. FOP get off your fucking asses and start looking out for the well being of the membership.
2. FOP defend us in the media!
3. We need to have another demonstration at city hall.
4. We need to have workshops on how to the city and criminals when they we get battered, hurt, or killed while on duty.(even teach our spouses to sue).
5.We need to demand that EVERY CAR, ON EVERY WATCH,IN EVERY DISTRICT IS A TWO MAN CAR!!!!!
6. We need to secure and I mean really SECURE all police facilities and parking lots. I want the same kind of security the suburban police department give their officers. That means no access to ANYONE except for the lobby, so tow drivers, ASA, Cook Sheriffs, and Judges do not have access!
7. If a officer is assigned to work a different district a temporary locker should be provided and that officers shouldn't be dressing in a parking lot for duty or after their tour.
this list can go on and on with the ideas of other officers.
May GOD Bless the Fallen Officer, His Family, and the CPD.

Unfortunately, you have a situation where the county and city are essentially run by a consortium of criminal enterprises of various sorts, who operate in collusion with other criminal organizations of various sorts.

Short of the voters getting tired of it and throwing them all out and starting over, it's not likely to get better anytime soon. And it's not real likely the voters are going to do much of anything.

CPD is seen as just another arm of this hugely corrupt city. It's not all that unfair, because that's what it is.

For those of you waiting for Daley II to die or go to jail for relief, think of what happened after Daley I passed. It's not real encouraging.

The Harold Washington debacle was enough to get the powers that be to arrange for something they thought would be more palatable than the way things were headed. In some respects, they did a pretty decent job of delaying the fall of Chicago to Detroit status.

They were not able to prevent the fall completely, and when Daley II does go, the fall may be very fast and very hard.

My suggestion is do whatever you have to do to get a contract that allows you to live outside the city and then do whatever it takes, including taking a loss on the sale of your home, to get outside the city.

Better to take a small loss now than a huge one later on.

The sad truth is: never.

The CPD will never be the pro-active, "real police" that it was.
The risks are too many and too severe: job loss, punitive damages & jail. The rewards are too few: 2% raise, blue jeans.

Why should you risk your freedom and/or bank account "to take a stand and pound these creatures into the dirt"? Doing your job does not require you to do these things or take these risks.

This is the CPD "THEY" wanted, let "THEM" clean up the problems.

Over the last year or so a lot of people have talked about Chicago being like Baghdad. I spent two years training police in Baghdad and Mosul and always kind of snickered at that comment. After the attack on a police officer yesterday at a police facility I'm not laughing anymore. We really arn't that far from Alaska Barriers, overwatch positions on the roof and access control points at the exterior of police stations. Thats absolutely insane and until the police are allowed to do their job, crush the enemy (and I choose that word on purpose)and do what is necessary to actually prevent crime instead of coddle criminals I'm afraid we're headed in for a bad place. RIP Officer. I pray for him and his family, and Chicago.

What a GREAT idea sending administrative people out to work the worst shithole in the City. Lets tell the citizens of this great strategy to supplement our patrol officers. People arent fooled by the smoke and mirrors. Every SPECIALIZED UNIT is being deployed there due to the VERY HIGH MURDERS And SHOOTING rates that are off the chart. These experienced Officers are in jeopardy but they are in the game. The OPERATION SAFE CITY and PROTECT YOUTH programs are jeopardizing the life of every cop participating in it. The Officers are behind on any training and have been out of the game for sometime leaving them more likely to get injured. I been around them in the past and was always concerned of them being deployed to 007. Most still have their minds back at their administrative jobs which follow them to the street (unable to break away from their reg. duties causing them to be distracted). Everybody knows this, but lets throw them into the fire anyway. Even our soldiers get months of training before the ever leave the USA to go into places with violence like this (Chi-raq). Minds and bodies need to be prepped and retrained to be able to operate and survive in these conditions. This is what NON-POLICE "leaders", who dont have a clue, are failing to do and may be responsible for the death of this Officer. HIRE MORE POLICE NOW! BUY MORE VEHICLES SO PO'S DONT WAIT HOURS TO BEGIN THEIR PATROLS. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS. My condolences to his family/friends/police officers everywhere and may he rest in peace.... I pray we get a REAL LEADERSHIP soon and this shit ends quick!

In response to 2:40 am:

Here, here.
I'd like to add my two cents worth. I think the media ought to turn their "investigative" eyes on the judges and ASAs. Misdemeanor court is a total joke. Has anyone here EVER testified at a misdemeanor trial? We might as well let all the criminals walk free- we do our job, that of locking them up. Then the ASAs and Judges drop the ball. The Judges just continue the cases forever until the poor victim stops coming. Gun laws? Lord, help us, we had 'em - some of the strictest in the country. We lock 'em up - look at the numbers. What happens after that? Follow the cases, Mr. Investigative Journalist. What happens to the offenders? Why does a 20 year old male have a gun on the streets at 0200 hrs? Self protection? Hey Judge - at least have the balls to find them guilty, time considered served - they'll have the conviction which makes them eligible for upgrades in the future....Fine 'em. Make 'em pay something, and when they don't THROW THEM INTO CC! God knows there's room!!! And that goes for all the misdemeanors - the BS batteries, the trespasses, all the petty crimes that impact immeasurably on the citizens. If we could get some justice in the misdemeanor courts, then maybe we wouldn't be so eager to ask for felonies. We try to get felony charges on everything because we know, and the citizens know, that's their only bite at the Justice Apple. The citizens need to wake up about the travesty that is our judicial system. It would be a start. HOLD THE JUDGES ACCOUNTABLE.

Let's leave my rant about the ASAs for another day.

Broke Down and Tired.

The travesty that is the Cook County justice syster. Every predator on parole, or probation on some watered down plea bargained charge, who commits another violent crime. The blood of the innocents involved bears directly on Anita Alvarez and the Judges involved. They cannot hide behind any excuses. Daley shares the blame because these are "his people"that he supported and helped put in office. The aldermen of this city and the Chicago area State Reps, and Senators also share the blame for being Daleys sheep. No amount of doublespeak can assuage the deserved guilt these politicians should feel. I hope that those involved read these words. I hope these words haunt their dreams. You cannot hide forever from your own conscience.

SCC,
Yesterday was truly a difficult day for the police department. As tragic as Officers Soderbergs death was we in 004 also lost one of our own. Dave Grubisic died at his home . For those of you that did'nt know Dave he was the best. Everywhere he went people liked and respected him. He was a working policeman who also did heating and air on the side and helped many an officer. His laugh was infectious and he was always the practical joker. I did'nt know Thor personally but having spoke with officers that did he sounds a lot like Dave. Both will be missed greatly.

I like the idea of marching on City Hall. I am not a police officer but I have been waiting to test for Chicago. I have been following this blog now and I think that you guys have been given the short end of the stick by the FOP, the city, and our politicians. Chicago is my home and I am saddened to see the people who protect it being crapped on by just about everyone.

God bless the CPD and nobody else.

This is beyond unimaginable. We are not even safe in a station parking lot. I wrote a very long letter to the Suprintendent by way of Blog 501. I don't care if they pull up who I am and identify me. I know the letter won't be published or answered but I said what had to be said. I've been spanked before for my outspoken thoughts and it will happen again. But things need to change. I wish everyone would have the stamina to post your comments on Blog 501, even though it's basically useless. But we need to come together and start saying how we feel where he will at least see we are all tired og this shit. No manpower, no eaquipment, lack of heavy weapons and having our hands tied to be the police. Everyone is to the point where we are in fear of retribution for doing our job, as we all should be. We have supervision that is afraid to allow ud to do our jobs. We have been castrated and there is no fear or respect for the police by anyone. All I'm saying it is time for everyone to post to Blog 501 and at least show we are all tired of being on the losing end of this war. We are tired of the smoke and mirrors to make iit look like we have more police than we do. It is time to quit having districts and areas severely depleted of manpower. We need someone to stand up for us. We need to all show we are united and tired of all the games. We know the truth and the 5th floor at Headquarters need to be aware of this. To hell with retribution. We need to stand up and not be afraid.

Yesterday was a very sad day for CPD. We lost 2 exemplary police officers. R.I.P. Thor. We also lost a wonderful officer from the 004th District, Dave Grubisic. While he did not die in the line of duty, I truly believe his death was caused by the stress of the job. He was a dedicated police officer who served and protected the citizens of 421's beat despite the low morale of this department. His radio antics as well as his attempted career in rapping(not)brought laughter to our district as well as our dispatchers. Dave was to turn 50 at the end of the month. Please, my brothers and sister be mindful of living each day as if it were your last. Do not hold grudges, never leave your home angry, say I love you to those that mean the most and more importantly do not carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.......talk......talk.....talk. Stay safe and GodSpeed to our officers

If the city is trying to shrink this department, then these are the types of things that are going to happen more frequently.

We are one major incident away from having the blindfold taken off of the city, and having them realize that we are understaffed, and the lack of experience on this job is dwindling. Officers are retiring at a massive rate, and with that goes a lot of knowledge.

Is there anyone that has enough pull in this city to get some officers hired?? Guess not.

Another 12 shot, 2 killed while I got a little sleep; today I'm sitting here wondering what to say about a city in which a badge and a gun mean nothing anymore -- a city in which armed police officers are attacked, robbed, and murdered right outside their family's home, or right in the parking lot of a police station, or are dragged injured from their vehicle after an automobile accident and robbed and stripped of their weapon.

While this goes on, the city erects giant eyeballs in the square, places forests of headless, armless figures in the parks, and sells liquor from carts for refreshment in the midst of the mad circus.

MAYOR DALEY IS CLINICALLY INSANE.

A century of failed social experiments have led us to this equation.

Chicago=Somalia="failed state."

While Officer Soderberg's death was Channel 9's lead story, someone at the station was thoughtless enough to play the song "Hit Me With Your Best Shot --Fire Away" during the broadcast. I feel that this was inappropriate and disrespectful in the extreme.

Considering that T-shaped ambushes have been carried out using rifles, the question must be asked. How long will it be until we lose a reporter -- maybe a whole camera crew -- in one of these horrible neighborhoods? There is ample precedent; war correspondents get killed and injured all the time.

"Who gon' be first do that TV b____h?" That'd get "street cred" for some crazy 14-year-old. He'd be famous from here to the corner. The boys in the hood wouldn't be able to stop talking about it for five or ten minutes.

I'm surprised that the media didn't "go Beirut" a long time ago, with Kevlar GI helmets and heavy ballistic vests with plates, all lettered "TV" front and back with gaffer's tape. There would be no shame in it; after all, even the police superintendent here runs like hell to get away from these scenes when the shooting starts again.

During Channel 9's street coverage, "neighborhood youths" crowded in behind the reporter where the camera could pick them up. One was grinning and flashing gang signs, another kept his back turned to display the large, elaborate gang emblem on the back of his white jacket.

It is past time for TV producers to control their backgrounds; either physically or electronically, by means of digital obscurance -- those squares, those enlarged pixels with which they can cover up part of a picture. Gang members should be prevented from using murder scenes to "represent," to mock, to incite.

Members of the media affect to be outraged by such behavior -- so do something about it. Save a life, and show some respect for the dead as well. Pull the plug on the free thug advertising you've provided for years. Need a "new policy" here.

Officer Soderberg's killer is reported to have something like 22 arrests for marijuana, and is alleged to have "health issues."

Is that what they call "mindless?"

Condolences to the Soderberg family and friends. God bless all. Watch your back. Watch your buddy. "Life changes in a heartbeat." Stay safe.

Tired now so can't remember the exact time or names, but more years ago than I like to recall a copper was killed and the WIVES really got going on the Department; this was the origin of the "10-99" radio call as a constant warning to the dispatcher that they might be sending one officer into danger.

Looks like now we are back where we started.

Bottom Line is the city needs to hire officers. Do what it takes have a test, allow suburb cops to transfer if they choose, allow city workers to transfer over, retired to return whatever. Its not that hard. We can figure out ways to add 1000 officers to the streets within a year. If you allowed already certified officers you can have an abbrievated academy and get them on the streets quick. You could allow city workers from other departments already employed by the city (if they meet basic qualifications) to come over. The fact there already employed by the city essentially would cost very little. Send them through academy and get them out within five months no bsing around with non sense in and out. Also have a test and get a strong list of names going. Then once step one and two are completed (probably would get roughly 200-300 if I had to guess) then work off that list quickly taking top applicants and getting them through. By mid 2011 we could have almost 1000-1200 on the streets highly qualified personal ready to go. This however we require common sense by leaders of this once great city. Then the reverends and alderman would complain and once again the citizens of this city would lose. If they had any clue or care this is what they would do. Pass the bs resolutions or whatever they call it and get laid off suburb cops, retired cops looking to return, surburb po's looking for the blue shirt of the city, city workers (teachers, Fire, streets and sanitataion, park district whatever) looking for a change to get out there and stop this bs occuring all over the city. This would cost very little be very quick processes and very qualified personal. IT CAN HAPPEN!!

ITEM 1: Back in the mid 80's - early 90's NYPD went from "passive"(current CPD) to pro-active (60's CPD) policing and cleaned Manhattan up. Think Koch was (term limited) mayor then. Dump Shortshanks, Dart & Alvarez. 3 reasons why Chicago has been and will continue to be taken over by thugs.

ITEM 2: Some assoc professors at City Colleges offered their version of a Student At Large program. They gave you an assignment to be completed at your leisure - honor system openbook style w/ test to be mailed back to them. The courses were electives, literature, humanities, ethics(no pun), arts appreciation, etc. Nothing that required real studying. You passed & got your hours. You get the drift...

ITEM 3: To paraphrase a Seinfeld episode where Jerry is told by a gymnast "'...although you tell jokes, you are no comedian". Well, you may work in law enforcement and perhaps wear a uniform, but you, JFLED are no Policeman.

I am sure that as Thor lay dying in the parking lot, his last thought was of his family, his wife. Would they be alright? Would she be taken care of? I know that the Officers on this Department will make that a priority.

I also know that that will be foremost in every Officers mind until the next election. Did
Thor have to die in a parking lot, changing clothes because his locker was somewhere across the City where he normally worked? Did Sgt Haymaker have to die rushing across the City to assist a Unit in an understaffed Department? Did Officer Valadez Have to die assisting at a crime scene with so few other Officers to help? Did Officer Francis have to die working alone on midnights?

The answers to all of these questions is a resounding NO. If this City wasn't so cash strapped because of the outright theft in City Government, the Police Department would be fully staffed and chances are these Officers would be with their families.

Remember that until the next election. Talk to your neighbors, family and friends. It is time for these criminals to be voted out of office.

I agree, when is the last time a police officer has been killed/murdered and a superintendent didn't "respond"? It is an insult to all the hard working police officers who put their lives on the line every day. The superintendent has a responsibility to respond and speak for the department to the media/public regarding this tragic murder of one of (HIS) our working officers.. I don't think he feels connected to this department, or to its people at all... hopefully when he is gone, NO ONE ELSE EVER does things his way. Doesn't he realize that when one of us is murdered that it affects each and every one of us in a negative way? Doesn't he get it, that a part of our souls die each time one of our brothers is taken from us? Doesn't he realize that we need our (alleged) leader to take the reigns now more than at any other time?
You might have complained about Hillard, but I guarantee he was at the hospital/scene immediately when one of ours was injured/killed during his tenure, you might not like Cline, but he gets the pain we are in when this happens and he made it to the scene/hospital/ whatever right away during his time... and going back, they all weren't perfect, sometimes their motives were suspect, but they didn't just ignore it and send their subordinates to handle what was their job to handle.... really, it is probably the only time when anyone of a lesser rank is unacceptable... All the bs news conferences about crime stats are totally appropriate to be handled by JJ or even EB/or Peterson depending... but this is in the supe's lap... he has dropped the ball.

this guy did it all right and still he was killed. My God, the offender knew he was the police and did not care. They (criminals) do not respect us, or more importantly fear us. This man, like Worhtham IV was a good man, a family man, and cared about people. I don't pretend to have the answers, and I can't blame J-Fled, or Daley or Masters. If I had to lay blame, it would be with the offender himself, his family, and the scumbag lawyers that continue to sue policemen for sport. We have a Department full of officers that are afraid to do their job for fear of a law suit. When we don't police proactively, by being aggressive, we get this. A man completely unafraid to take on a policeman, one on one and kill him. Until we repeal the law that says you can sue a copper, like you can't sue an ASA or judge, crimes like this will continue. Thor was a great guy, a good cop, in good physical health and a firearms instructor and he was still over powered and killed. If this doesn't give you pause, you should not be on the job.

-------------------------

this post is a perfect explanation of the all out attacks upon police officers nation wide. It is due to us being sued and thrown under the bus by the brass and media.

How about some MEANINGFUL, JOB-RELATED TRAINING. Not touchy-feely Streaming Video. Yes, the department has made some other videos available, but rather than make them mandatory training, like Streaming Video, they're optional.

Just ask your W/C if you can spend the 1st 1/2 hour of your tour watching them. Good luck.

We've seen this before. 20% of police officers killed are shot with their own guns.

Someone on the blog previously suggested that we get our training on-the-job, that we cannot afford to take officers off the street because we're so damn short. He's right on one hand, but on the other hand, how many mre coppers can we afford to lose to "OJT"?

Weapons retention training that occurs on the job? It's a litle too late by that time. 1 in 5 of us will be unsuccessful in this training method.

We're so short that coppers are getting killed at the very initiatives implemented to stop violent crime. More failure by the Daley administration.

Of course, coppers geting killed on the job might just be another form of de facto layoffs-like not replacing those who retire.

Keep the pressure up, SCC. You might be insignificant, but you expose the B.S. that this department shovels down the throats of it's members, as well as those of the public.

the requirement to go to the CPD academy to be hired as a CPD officer is not state law, but a CPD rule. As a mere rule, there is often some discretion in when that rule can be waived. If one were to look closely at the rule, I would bet it can be waived by the superintendent, or some other official as long as the guy is certified.

7/08/2010 08:43:00 AM

That having been said and assuming it's accurate, a money saving and more importantly, time saving option to get patrol up to a safe staffing level within a more reasonable amount of time than the traditional 3-4 yr. Process inplace now, would be a lateral hiring, shortened cpd academy...shortened fto etc. Several large cities have done it for years and attract applicants from all ove the country. I myself know several young coppers who would jump at that opportunity or have gotten on in the burbs and are waiting for cpd exam. I'd consider it as well, with only 6 years on in a relatively large south burb PD. It would be a good supplement to regular hiring and could probably net the cpd several hundred (good) cops and provide some relief come next summer. Just a thought, it's become very obvious that something, anything, should be done. Something effective and progressive for the sake of the safety, sanity and general welfare of the rank and file, somebody needs to give a fuck!

God bless Officer Soderberg's family and friends and rest his soul.

I’m sure many of you have seen the TV program, “Gangland.” The show has covered many of the street gangs in Chicago. It shows the rapid growth of some of the most notorious street gangs in Chicago in the 70’s and 80’s. The violence they cause is undeniable. It shows what great lengths were undertaken to dismantle some, (el Rukns) and hardly weaken the others.

What is very disturbing is the fact that these gangs were able to operate and grow with impunity! Right under the nose of the CPD and the FBI/DEA. Now back in the 70’s and 80’s, the CPD was closer to the budget strength than it is today. The police were able to be the police. We had the bodies to get shit done.

How much power will these street gangs gain now with the present “touchy feely, hands off culture,” that permeates the police department?

I can only imagine in ten years, what the “Gangland” producers will be broadcasting about Chicago. I’m sure there will be a sound bight with the by then retired (or fired) JFled, about not having a clue that those gangs were up to no go, after all, he told them to knock it off.

"Yesterday's tragedy I don't think had anything to do with the number of police out there..."

Boss, I agree with the rest of your posting, but disagree with this one point.

Thor was getting off duty from one of the anti-violence programs that have become necessary due to the neglect of the police department.

His blood truly is on Daley's hands, as well as that of a weak state's attorney's office and poor judges.

The overhaul needs to start at the top and work it's way entirely to the bottom before this problem and it's ripple effect are gone.

It is time to VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBENTS.

VOTE NO ON JUDICIAL RETENTION.

DUMP THEM ALL.

SHOW THEM YOUR UNHAPPINESS.

Or don't beef when it's same ol', same ol'.

Early Thursday morning after that late Sox win. Ozzie Guillen steps in for his post game press conference. 1st question was about the 5 errors the Sox committed..Ozzie's response "Its just a game, on behalf of myself and the White Sox our prayers are with the Chicago Police officer that was killed and hope his family is doing well". No matter where your baseball heart lies or your thought about Ozzie...That was a classy move. RIP Office!

Am I the only one thinking that TRU, MSF, and all of GEU should be assigned to 007 until further notice? Seriously, that place has been horrible lately. This just stresses the point even more. The people in Englewood shouldn't be able to walk down the street without being stopped or without seeing a squad car.

Be careful it's gonna get worse.

Re: Vote Out
It's easy to say vote out "whomever", but for some offices, NO opponent exists.

Re: Harold Washington Debacle

I honestly don't know how Harold treated police officers, but I'm guessing it was better than Daley II. If Harold was mayor today, I bet Chicago would be much better overall and police officers would be treated with respect (unlike today's Mayor Daley II). In "many" ways, Chicago 1984 is better than Chicago 2004 and beyond.

It's ironic that Detroit 2 was "occurring" under Harold (1983-1987), when it's actually happening under Daley II (1989-2020?). Where's that "Prevent Detroit 2 Strategy" now?

At least in 1984 without fear, I could attend Taste of Chicago, walk around downtown, Gold Coast, etc.and ride the el from downtown at 9 or 10 PM.

Any officer who responds 99 to a 10-4 job is doing no service to his fellow officers. such an officer is telling the city that he does not need backup and that the city does not need to hire more police because there are hotshots who can handle this shit on their own.

IF YOU RESPOND 99 TO A 10-4 JOB, YOU CONTINUE TO PUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS' LIVES AT RISK. F**k ANY BOSS WHO TELLS YOU OTHERWISE.

the more i hear about this tragedy the more i think this guy had to be an absolute mental case or high on pcp or something- to kill a cop in a police lot then just walk off and start shooting again is just fu&*ing crazy- that will be his defense- just put him down like a stray dog!

I am working days in a Northside District, and we usually have 6 to 8 cars (all 99, except the wagon).

The sheets for the 3rd watch are almost all "99 units", and if you look at MIDNIGHTS almost all units 99, and 1 or 2 supervisors.

This in a District that has over 100,000 people, and gets more that 15,000 visitors every weekend.

The Board of Education just layed off about 400 young teachers. How about we give them a badge and a gun and bring them over. HELL most of them where working at schools in the ghetto, besides if Masters can be the police anybody can, at least these teachers got to spend some time in the ghetto. STAY SAFE, AND WAIT FOR YOUR ASSIST, YOU HAVE SOMEONE WAITING AT HOME!!!!

The Sun-Times' Fran Spielman has a story in today's (7/9/10) paper about the tens of thousands of blue plastic recycling carts sitting in a warehouse, unused.

This is a waste, Spielman reports, of around a million dollars.

These carts were procured from Chicago United Industries. i have not found out who is behind this company but if you want to get a real eye opener, go to the below link and check out the many millions of dollars worth of contracts this company gets from the City of Chicago. It is mind boggling.

Now this is Chicago so there simply must be an inside connection. if anyone knows what it is, please post it.

This is truly amazing, check out the link:

Ummm excuse me...didnt the REVEREND Jesse Jackson get his mug in the news recently shilling for a "Torture Commission?"
Where in the name of all that is holy is that pompous, loud-mouthed, self-serving, nut cutting, windbag piece of shit lately? I'm sorry I meant RACIST piece of shit.
Oh wait a minute, hit the reverse button. A POLICE OFFICER was killed, not one of his cradle to the grave, hand-fed, street raised asshole constituents whom in my opinion are "kept down" by their own leaders and "REVERENDS" as a means to control them as a voting block. You just keep voting the way I tell you and you can keep getting whatever you need, you dont have to lift a finger or get out of bed because we're gonna get the chump taxpayers to pay the bill anyway. The good people in those communities I speak of, know at whom this statement is directed at. Just as not all cops are bad, crooked, brutal or racist.
I was taught long ago that an education can never be taken from you and that, coupled with determination and a will to succeed, should afford anyone a means to responsibly attain a comfortable life. I wish my role models could have had the audience that half of these fool politician, community activists and so-called religious leaders have access to.
Their message is to continue to portray the police as the enemy, to be ignored and attacked. To be the focus and cause of all that is wrong in some communities.
F*ck these contemptable, soul-less sonsabitches on whom I lay part of the blame for the MURDER of another of our brothers. The MURDER of Officer Wortham wasnt enough of an eye opener I guess. No outrage, not a peep.
No money to be made there huh Jesse? You Jesse and the little mealy-mouthed runt inhabiting the fifth floor of City Hall whom I believe bears most of the responsibility for this tragedy, should be run out of this town on a red-hot rail.
Whats that Jesse, no "Police Murderer Commission?"
Crickets chirping...
No outrage, not a peep.
Jesse Jackson and Mayor Daley, you sicken me.
Godbless and Godspeed to you Officer Soderberg and all our fallen brothers and sisters, til we meet again on a beat in God's Kingdom.

I disagree - I have requested to work 99 because we have to many untrained officers and I have had to many close calls because of them- sorry truth be told.

When the real police return I may change my mind but until then I need to go home safely.

years ago some districts would have 2 field lts working
field lt was the best job

I personally don't give a rat's ass about what this miniature pseudo-cop was doing with his blackberry during the time at the morgue. WHAT is he doing there himself anyway? He isn't a real cop, he has no idea what we do out in these streets, he wouldn't know what to say to a downed cop's wife, husband, domestic partner or children. He should just stay home when this kind of thing happens. He's never even investigated a homicide. I know he'd probably take a beating on the blog for NOT showing up, but I wouldn't fault him at all...he's an ADMINISTRATOR (and a lousy one), but he will NEVER be considered a cop in this Dept., and that's just the way it is!

yes they can be, a CR# has to be filed asap for conduct unbecoming and rule 2. They have about 7 to 10 days before they are gone for good. Also and Im not sure seeing that it is a company phone he has no expectation of privacy but the scope of the search would be limited to the case in point. I hope this helps. Company president George Loera was a co-founder of the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce along with Gery Chico, Mayor Richard Daley's former chief of staff.

He owns 51% and vice president Nick Masserella owns 49%.

Loera lives in Park Ridge, Nick Massarella, is from LaGrange.

The company is considered minority owned which gives it a leg up on getting city and other government contracts.

Did Officer Francis have to die working alone on midnights AMNEN AMEN AMEN
