RIP Officer Soderberg

Sarcasm and Silliness are on hold for the time being. It would seem inappropriate to do a post about sports or Shortshanks or some other nonsense when once again, the Department is reeling from the death of an officer.

Here are the latest media links to Officers Soderberg's death:
Remembrances and prayers for the fallen only in this thread.

Please, everyone, remember to let our elected officials know that reinstatement of the death penalty is an important issue. It is called for in situations like this.

Dear God how can this happen again and again. I was five years old when a detective sat at the end of my bed to tell me of my fathers fate. Back then officers were executed on a regular bases. We seem to be going back in history. Officers nation wide are the target. The liberal media has made us the the enemy for far long. Please watch your back always. My soul weeps. I've know since a young age the mission we have agreed to take on. Watch eachothers back. KK Gold Star Member since 1970

This is just heartbreaking...

Reading the accounts, Officer Soderberg was a very peaceful, kind, caring man. It takes many different kinds of people for the the CPD operate and yes, in some roles, we need the most miserable, ornery bastards we can muster up, but there is a role for the kind, thoughtful, even caring Peace Officer. Those kinds of guys aren't easy to find; the ones who are able to maintain an unhardened heart while working in a place like this... Very tragic to lose one.

Godspeed, Mr. Soderberg.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We've got the torch Brother. You can sleep now.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I still feel such a very heavy heart with the death of Officer Soderberg as well as a great deal of anger that we are not supported in being and acting as the police.

I offer my prayers for the members of the Soderberg family that they may find some comfort in this horrible time.

I just feel too sad to find the right words to write.

May God bless P.O. Soderberg, his family and the boys and girls in CPD blue.

I knew Thor back when we were kids growing up in Skokie. I was shocked when I looked down at my newspaper today and saw his image staring back at me. The feeling was surreal and I am still at a loss for the right words to express my sadness. RIP Thor. My thoughts and prayers for your wife and family.

Officer Soderberg, you touched so many people's lives. I am so glad to know the new officers coming out of the Academy had someone like you to influence them. You will live on through them. The best of what this job is supposed to be will live on through them. My heart goes out to your family and also your second family, your recruits ready to graduate.

A call out to all officers through SCC. I think it would be an extremely powerful statement if every single able-bodied officer that can, Chicago and Suburban, turns out for the funeral of P.O. Soderberg. No protest, No activism, just one huge silent wall of solidarity. Let Weis and Daley feel the strength we have for eachother and the sorrow we have for our fallen brother.

I stopped by the academy today to offer support and assistance. I thought the staff handled this tragic event with class. They provided support to the recruits and numerous former recruits stopped by to help. The HRI's and sgts were very supportive. I thought Lodding was very accessible to everyone and stayed in touch with recruits. Everyone had a chance to vent and receive help. The flag raising ceremony was very emotional. It is obivious the emotional connection between the academy staff and recruits, both current and former recruits.

I'm so sick of the senselessness of it all. I've made it through 35 years of being a Police Officer on two different departments and in the Military Police and when a Police Officer is murdered ine cold blood it greatly affects me....the anger, pure rage, sadness and crying blue tears take a great toll on me.

I now worry every day about my son, who is a true young worrier, a sheep dog guarding the flock and works out of the building in which I started my career 20 years ago, 6120 S. Racine. As one of his Sgt's once said "We are "La Punta De La Lancè," the point of the spear in the war against urban terrorist's.

Like Skipper O'Donnell say's, "Stop the lies Weis and Daley", stop the bull shit lies and get us some god damn help and equipment that works if you want your city back.................***STOP THE LIES***

REMEMBER FEELLOW OFFICERS, WE HAVE STRENGTH IN NUMBERS AND SOLIDARITY.......FOR THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT IT's ABOUT TIME WE WAKE THE GOD DAMN CITY UP BEFORE WE SPILL ONE MORE DROP OF OUR BLOOD FOR A POPULATION OF STEALING, RAPING, ROBBING, MURDERING INGRATES!!! EVERY MURDERED POLICE OFFICERS LAST DROP OF BLOOD IS ON YOUR HANDS DALEY, SLEEP WELL TONIGHT, SLEEP WELL ON YOUR MATTRESS STUFFED WITH MONEY, AS ANOTHER POLICER OFFICERS WIFE AND FAMILY MUST MOURN THE ULTIMATE SACRAFICE MADE BY THIS MAN!!!

Rest in Peace Officer Thor Soderberg, and may your family find the strength to cope with the difficult time ahead.

I am a Sgt. trust me guys not all white shirts are bad; some of us are still THE POLICE! GOD BLESS OFFICER SODERBERG AND HIS FAMILY! God bless us all. We all tend to forget, in the mayhem, that we must take care of each other. I will forever be grateful to be a Chicago POlice Officer. It is our family; spouses, children, significant others, and the grace of GOD that keep us stable. Stay safe!

Uh...now that you mention it, refusing the full honors is a somber and powerful statement about a city that wouldn't even provide a place for a man to change his clothes...

Expect this to bounce right off Daley's thick skull; he doesn't have the insight to even notice, let alone be ashamed.

In one ear and out the other.
