Honored Star Case Turns 100

  • Bagpipers opened the ceremony on the 100th anniversary of the superintendent's honored star case.

J-Fled at the ceremony minus uniform. Is it possible he's been

Every time I walk through that hallway I have to stop and visit the stars of the officers I knew. Unfortunately I know too many of them.

I spent 34 years on the job, and when I counted the stars placed in that case during my career, it came to 97. Many of those I knew or worked with at one time or another. When I came on, the case was in the susperintendent's office and was not open for public viewing.

There is a photo in the book "End of Watch" (which I recommend to every CPD member even though it was co-written by Ed Burke) that shows the display case in I believe the early 1900's. It only has about 30 stars in it at the time. Amazing how many officers have been added since then

Everyone on this job should do that, each and everytime the building is visited. Never Forget.

They should bring recruits there on their first day of the Academy.

THAT is a sobering statistic. If you had asked me to guess without seeing the numbers, I'd have guessed 4-5 in the WORST year.

We on the sidelines all know it's a dangerous job, but we for the most part don't realize HOW dangerous.

OT_Car thefts surge 22% in Chicago
October 15, 2010

(AP) — Car thefts are on the rise in Chicago, and authorities say young joyriders are to blame.

Chicago police officials say motor vehicle thefts are up more than 22 percent through September, compared to the same period last year.

Police Sgt. Phil Cappitelli tells the Chicago Sun-Times that the increase appears mostly to be tied to younger thieves, who often take older model cars and drive them until they run out of gas. But Cappitelli says he's also investigating reports of tow truck operators illegally hooking cars and taking them to scrap metal yards where they're crushed for cash.

Police say there is some good news in the crime stats. Violent crime is down 11 percent, and property crimes such as burglary and arson have also fallen.

Roberto Zavala put in his papers today. He is leaving effective 15 Nov. God Bless this wonderful man. Rumor has it that he was kept out of the loop on all the recent changes. Also rumored are several district Command Staff changes once again. Looks like Ernie Brown is the man for now. Hope he takes a BIG tumble very soon. This man is extremely incompetent at best.

With the departing of Roberto Zavala there are rumors that many if not all Deputy Chief positions will be eliminated!! The Commanders will report directly to Eugene Williams in the very near future. Buckle your seat belts the road is getting very bumpy for all gold stars.

Coming soon:
Here's something thats not a rumor, Each Patrol Area on 2nd watch will have One Captain that approves all arrest reports for the area, and TRR's etc... while the Lt's will become Watch Coordinators to handle roll call and A and A's thus having to pay only 6 Captains WC pay during 2nd Watch. Be careful what all you people calling for downsizing ask for.

It is actually well maintained now. Someone finally decided that the what those stars represent was deserving of respect and attention.

I just retired as well and when I see a statistic like an average 4.7 killed for 100 years I am taken aback. I never thought of it that way, though I did always know that it happened way too often. God bless all honored there, their families and the men and women of the Chicago Police Department.

I am proud to have been one of you. And in my heart I always will be.

Stay safe everyone.

Not sure if you guys are following this, but the City of Chicago called Dan Bartoli as a witness for the City of Chicago against public ranges in the City regarding the Action Target lawsuit against the City of Chicago.

What a fucking asshole.............

Check out what a klown Bartoli is when you get a chance.

http://onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com/2010/10/ezell-v-chicago-preliminary-injunction.html

Know your anti-gut players. This guy is not a friend to you as a police officer or civilian possessing legally owned firearms in the City of Chicago.

Bartoli claims he's a "firearms instructor" and owns numerous firearms, yet he does not support the 2nd amendment, NRA, or any other organization that is trying to protect your constitutional right to legally own and use firearms.

I guess he missed the decision on the Heller case.

It's guys like Bartoli that are the reason why Obama is in office.

With respect to the soon to be retired Chief, he was promoted way past his level of competence. He's fortunate to have reached the rank he has today, largely benefitting from the fallout from the garbage the dept. pulled on Bobby Lopez. Zavala has lots of contacts, and no one doubts that he'll have something lined up with the county or some other branch of Cook County law enforcement, if he wishes to continue working, when he retires. The 'retired chief' badge he'll receive on his way out will no doubt push him way up the line for new job past lots of others.

That average number doesn't mean a lot. There were a number of times we went several years without losing an officer.

The painful part is that when we lose an officer, it usually happens in groups.

Stay safe.

I think you left off a digit; in the early 1990's there had been way over 300 officers killed in the line throughout CPD history. They have added many since then, those officers killed since then, of course, and also officers whose classification has been changed after more investigation.

The cry for that is nothing new. The Booz-Allen report of the mid 1990's advocated eliminating whole layers of middle management (clout jobs) as they weren't needed. Daley didn't do it then, now there is no money so they might do it Those jobs weren't needed then and they aren't needed now.

Why pay a Deputy Chief to smoke a couple of packs of cigarettes a day in back of A/3 with his staff?

How bout it. He can call a late night press conference, but when a guys intentionally tries to kill numerous police officers in one night he's nowhere to be found. Not even a press conference saying "good job." Nothing. All he cares about is hurting coppers. Burying them for any little thing they do wrong. He's the absolute worst.

Annually 140-150 law enforcement members are killed annually.
That averages out to a copper killed app. every 53 hours in the U.S.

Dan Bartoli said the right thing. Safety must have priority. A mobile range will create new problems. Maybe they could put mobile ranges all over the city and who will deal with the problems? Citizens carrying weapons going to a mobile range are perfect targets for gang bangers. DB said we must consider the issues before any decisions are made. There is a lot of work to managing a range. If you worked in a CPD rane, you would be shocked at what can happen. DB did the right thing.

Is the Star Case really 100 years old? or is it 105? I saw a WTTW channel 11 documentary on Chief Francis O'Neill, who was the Superintendent in 1905. In it, Dennis Bingham, the police historian, was interviewed and he said O'Neill established and founded the Star Case in 1905...Others say it was founded by Supt. Leroy Steward in 1910. Which is true?
