Interesting Proposal
This popped up in the comments:
- Since were on the topic of Tact guys...Starting 2nd Period, the 009th District will rotate all of it's Tact guys back to the watch that they bid for, and replace them with [volunteers] from the watch.
The commander is doing this to see if the numbers go up, down or stay pretty much the same. If there is not much of a change in numbers, then most, not all, PO's will be invited back and the volunteers sent back to the watch.
We've heard proposals are also being floated around to make Tact a 90 day detail, renewable once to 180 days, and then back to the watches for the rest of the year. Seems that some people may be ruining it for all, and by mixing it up, HQ hopes to get the numbers up. It would certainly take the wind out of sails.

If they do that, are watch rotations coming back? Not that I'm old enough or been on the job long enough to know but I remember hearing about those all night benders known as watch parties....

Not many people want tact and I really can't blame them under the crew we got now at 35th st. Many years ago there was a stack of To-From's a foot high to apply for tact. Now there's one or two To-from's on the LT.'s desk at the most. Leave tact alone, it's not broken, so don't try to fix it.
OT...Talk about waste....023 has a so called burglary team that is composed of 3 P.O.'s and 1 Sgt. to supervise the 3 P.O.'s. Yes, that's right, 1 Sgt. to watch 3 P.O.'s who never arrest a burglar only homeless people sleeping. Midnights in 023 is basically a skeleton crew and we have wasted manpower like this going on.
Where's the loyalty? You do what they ask of you and they dump you back to the watch?

I feel sorry for any police officer who works on the tact team who "has to get numbers". You add the pressure for arrests along with the pressure to keep your tact assignment equals trouble.

Maybe the first clue that something needs to be done with the tact teams is picking personnel by reverse seniority.

In some districts nobody wants tact. I remember the days when everybody wanted tact and you had brown nosers hanging by the Lt and Sgts all the time trying to get an in. Today some districts have to ask a guy if he would like to be on tact. The funnier thing is seeing officers say no thanks. I know I would turn down tact. Been there done that as they say.
I've worked tact before.zero benefits anymore, they can have it.
Tact teams are a voluntary assignment. This will never happen, trust me. Tact teams, whether you like them or not, are the staple of the Cmdrs, Deputies and downtown bosses who need a ready bunch of people to fuck with. This proposal will drop numbers dramatically and cause another great morale problem.

Not many po's would even have the flexibility in their daily schedule to work tact. Days, nights, relief....there is something to be said about having a set schedule. That tact schedule sucks for planning day care, side jobs,etc. And u will not get paid for close to half your court dates since you are on days half the time. Couple that with the pressure of getting a "head" a day, keep it. There are currently openings on teams in my district that are going to have to be filled by reverse seniority due to the lack of interest of being the denim police.

This is an excellent idea if implemented. Experience has shown that most tact guys are there for who they know, not what they do. Most seem to have the attitude, "a bag of weed per day keeps the beat car away."
If workers from the watch get this chance, those tact guys will remain on the watch. arresting homeless people, juvies with a bag of weed, and countless criminal trespassers hardly fits the job description of hard workers. and then padding their own stats by being added as "assisting arresting officer" on arrests they had no role in. those guys are pathetic.

Well, for the first time, we needed to bid to a watch, but we were told we would stay on Tact.
Search Warrants in the 009th District are over the roof. Of course numbers will decline. The Exempts in the Ivory Tower should know this. If that should happen i predict many jumping to other districts closer to their residences. Another well thought of decision.

They should shitcan tact. Many times they are detailed out. Tact is a numbers game, S.U.B. and other pimpy arrests. Beat cars handle most selling calls. We need bodies in beat cars.
They must be doing this in 011. Look at those teams, especially the new members. They are nothing but clowns. And whomever allowed that goof from 3rd watch on, needs his/her head examined.
How about rotating all of those MSF people back to their distrists every 90 days so they don't forget how to do police work like case reports and domestics and so on and on.
A priceless Tact moment for me happened a few years back when I was working the Wagon with a PPO and we were assigned to transport 3to the Area for the Tact Team. The arrests were for DOPW. The PPO asks me in front of everybody in the Tact Office, "They really arrested them for DOPW? We were taught in the Academy to just write an ANOV if the guy has ID and come clear. This is what Tact does?" The Tact Team was speechless. I laughed all the way to the Area. This kid had balls and to this day refuses to go "upstairs".

Sounds just like 007 except we have 10 guys each with less than 5 years on each being held on days on management. And no I'm not complaining about not getting days, I have 20 plus years on so my day spot is secure. Just feel for the guys who work and answer calls who got sent to midnights because this useless team took their spots.

tact team = DOPW, CANN, SOL, 1 rock PCS. Stop bringing in piss bums and 1 rockers and do some real police work.
we are run ragged on the watch and these guys throw themselves on each other's paper and duck out early. some of them don't know how to write a simple report or search a prisoner properly.
the laugh is on us though because we are the ones stuck doing the full tour.
Some of those tact guys need to go back to the watch anyway. they think they are better than us on the watch. We hear the watch supervisors telling the tact supervisors that the watch is better to work for a sergeant. Why work tact anyway. Did you like being strong armed to buy x-mas tickets. The asshat who made the comment about the tact Sgt's, you need to know that the supervisors think you are the biggest cry baby in the district. They know who you are (because of your big mouth) and they can't wait to get rid of you. A word of advise asshat, the tact and watch Sgts have a good working relationship in 009 and continuously share information and none of them like you.

EVERYONE must fill out a bid form, no matter where you are working in District law.
Sad to say but I've seen hard working, quality arrest, decorated, good attitude, smart police officers stuck in beat car their whole career, it's a shame, but ass kissing and nepotism beats the best of officers.

At least the 19th District has 6 clout babies and a clout Sgt. on the burglary team. They don't arrest homeless unless they're a shoplifter....get a burglar whenevr the Detectives give them the name and address of one. All the while the 1st watch in 019 operates with 4 cars maybe 5...What a joke!
All you're going to get are people who will do what ever the Sgt. or Lt. tell them to do. I heard rumors that my Tact Lt. wants to get rid of anyone with more than 10 years on. I somewhat believe it because the guys with time on refuse to lock up pissers and drinkers.
The new police think that a quality tact arrest is taking a felony from a beat car who doesn't want the bother. Tact used to fight my watch for real arrests. But then we were the real police 25years ago, and the best of the best were always in a beat car.
I've heard some dumbass ideas in the past 2 years but OMG this has got to be in the top 5!
Who cares how many search warrants the 009 dist serve how many pan out its all smoke and mirriors ask the ten year wonder who got the best foot post in the district even though many older officers put in for it.never worked anything but days and now weekends off.
This is just a guess but some state police departments and multi-unit agencies do this to keep "fresh eyes" goes the theory. The arrest numbers are excellent. Not only are they high but the quality is exceptional and the teams have learned how to pass info from team to team and have begun working together. Many agencies have begun using these 90 day assignments as a basis for promotion. Like I said, only guessing as I live out of state now and have no idea what old Illinois is up to these days.

When I worked tact years ago I was approached by the lieutenant who offered me a chance. He didn't ask if I wanted to work tact, he asked me "how would you like to not work midnights?"
When we went around the clock, tact meant a period of days, period of afternoons and period of relief, but NO MIDNIGHTS. Now with straight watches, who but the young coppers stuck on midnight would want to work tact?
023 Tac- What about the weird guy who brings baked goods every day and locked up a guy for plugging his cellphone charger into a CTA wall???

You are soft if you do more than answer your calls (no hurries), and arrest people on signed complaints. They can't do shit to you for doing just that. If they fuck with you, get lawyered up and don't even bother with the fop. Just make sure that you document when they fuck with you and have witnesses. You'll see how fast their bullshit stops and you may even make some dough on the way. Stay safe.

just found out from a reliable source that the top 5 guys with the most arrests on each tact team are gonna be going to the area starting the 1st period. the rest are going back to the watch. this way they'll have more po's in the busier areas and more po's in each district. its a win win situation. kinda sucks to be doing ur job, huh
