A Rumor of Crime

If true, how does this not make the news?
  • Big caper Sat Night in 16th Dist. 3 M/1's armed with hand guns and wearing ski masks entered the Baker Square restaurant at Harlem & Foster, and ducted taped 11 people and put them in the cooler and robbed them. Wonder why that didn't make the news?
Brown's Chicken, Lane Bryant, the start of this "bumblebee" bandit shooting, there's quite a list. Can anyone up north verify?

And here's a scary thought - if this one went south, J-Fled's homicide reduction totals are out the window.

Stuff has been going under the radar for the last few years with the news media. They used to have young freelance reporter/photographers who used to listen to police and fire scanners and go pick up on news stories like that. They would shoot some film, (does anyone else actually remember 35mm Kodak Tri-X Black & White) and run downtown to the Sun-Times and Tribune buildings and process that film. If they were lucky, they would get $25-50 for a photo with a caption. I use to do that in the late 60's and 70's, not a lot of money but it was an adventure and got to see your photo with your name on a by-line.

Now there's hardly any news media left at all. A busy overnight City Room now is just a couple of young reporters who make phone calls. Rarely, but I have seen it done, do they ever leave the office to pursue a story.

I recall the motto of the now defunct City News Bureau, "If your mother tells you that she loves you, check it out." Not a lot of time or space to check things out anymore.

Stay safe; make sure you fax a copy of the case report to News Affairs.

Why is it that when crimes of this nature happen in 016, it's big news? These incidents happen EVERYWHERE. Obviously, someone decided it wasn't big news, and the media were either not informed, or was asked to look the other way on this one. It's not like that's never happened before either in reporting crimes (or NOT) in Lincoln Park, Beverly or Hyde Park.

I'll tell you why it did not make the news. The majority that live in that area are white people that have jobs, take responsibility for their actions and don't call 911 everytime a neighbor is doing something that may irritate them.

Nothing newsworthy here.

But have this same scenario on the south side and it would be the lead story on the 5,6 and 10 news. News trucks would line the streets with reporters hoping to get an interview with some momma crying to the camera as to why, oh why does this happen to HER people!

to 3.18, you are correct---the days of carrying a 5 shot are over.

Carrying a full sized duty pistol off duty is a little much and too big for the summer.

The Glock 26, aka "The Baby Glock" is perfect for off duty use. With an extended, finger curl, mag you have 13 rounds at the ready.

The Glock 36 is a .45acp with 6+1 rounds that is physically the same size as the G-26.

There is always a case made for the .380s, but they don't quite pack the punch.

I have gotten remiss over the past couple of years over off duty carry, no more and I live about 2 blocks away from Harlem/Foster.

It was probably because there was little radio traffic about it to begin with. The news scanners were busy with MWG calls in 010, 011 and 007.

There were few or no injuries.

Somebody didn't call, (maybe on purpose) News Affairs, or any reporters they knew.

No shots were fired, no drunkin cops involved, so why get excited.

The old relationships that cops and reporters used to have retired with John "Bulldog" Drummond.

Daley ruined this city when he tore down the projects and by allowing this to be a sanctuary city. Third world people bring third world problems. Now I have to go and tear down my garage and park my "ban" on the concrete slab then after that I'll sit on the porch while my wife braids my hair, and then maybe I'll get into a shirtless fight.

If you carry a 5 shot, carry two of them.
Those Glocks are great, if they are Dept.approved. The G36 has been problematic for some .
Small .380s are very convenient for lazy people. The Kahr is the only one good for more than 30 feet, because it has real sights. I think small .380s are more for civilians that dont want to get caught with a gun.

ASA 400 to start with, could be push-developed a lot faster, at the expense of a grainier shot. Used it for at least thirty years. All gone out of the Walgreens now, hard to find. Still have my tanks, thermometers, everything.

What I want it a device that converts my digital photos to archival 35mm negatives hypo-eliminated, washed/stabilized for at least a 250-year shelf life, folded in little sulfur-free glassine folders, all stored in a .50 cal. can purged with superdry nitrogen...

Bother me enough and I'll start coating my own glass plates again and doing the black-focusing-hood number with the view camera...
