CFD Contract on Tap

And it looks like it's not going to be well received by the rank-and-file:
  • Chicago firefighters and paramedics would get a 10 percent pay raise over five years and give the city its most flexibility ever to reduce manpower and cut overtime costs under a tentative contract up for a ratification vote.

After nearly four years of bargaining slowed by a civil war within the Chicago Fire Fighters Union, the city and Local 2 have finally reached agreement on a contract that calls for the elimination and reassignment of a fire company to reduce city overtime costs. The targeted company had been assigned to the repair shop.

The contract, which would run until June 30, 2012, gives firefighters and paramedics the same 10 percent raise an independent arbitrator awarded to Chicago Police officers.

Reading the entire article, it sure looks like the firefighters got the short end of every bargaining point.

Actually I don't believe this is true. I am a steward of local2 and think that this will fly by the largest margin in the last 18 yrs that I have been on the job. Fran was way off on her article as usual.
There were things that I don't like about it but for the most part I feel we did ok keep most of what we have from the last contract.

SCC you should know better than to believe everything you read from the media - ANY of the media. How about the timing of the contract agreement - right after the announcement of the pension deficit AND the almost definite raising of property taxes?? Makes me crazy to hear civilians moan and groan about the tax increase. Come on!! We're going feel that kick in the ass too, plus we don't get the option of moving out of the city unless we walk away from the job.

Everyone I talked to at the firehouse expected a contract like this. The city always negotiates financial terms with the FOP first because they are the weaker union (I don't mean that in a negative way). Although now we (and the FOP) make less than city electricians and garbagemen who did not give back anything to the city, but we don't have furlough days which makes us about even. However, all future salaries are affected by this and will hurt down the line. All in all, considering the economy, I am satisfied with the contract.

Is Daley going to have a press conference where he laughingly says "Don't blame me, blame the Union"????

Of course not because he knows the public believes that Police are jagoffs and Firemen are Heroes.

(Not meant to be a slam against firemen)

As usual first responders get fucked! They are sending how many to New Mexico tech to learn about the suicide bombers? And then we are shit on? Hope the 50 and the mayor are ready to pitch in!

What infuriates us firefighters the most is that this is the first time in 3 years we discovered what our unions begining bargaining positions were. We had to read them in the newspaper and The vast majority of the ratification ballots are already returned. Daley has every right to gloat. We got our @sses handed to us. Look for big changes in our upcoming union elections.

You would rather take 24 unpaid furlough days. My neighbor is a garbage man and thats what he had to give the city. You need to quit taking to your cat and get out in the real world.

I dont know what pay grade you are currently at but with 10 yrs on the job we are making 75,000. My buddy who is a garbageman makes about 60,000 with 15 yrs on.

They have the me too clause, historically the fire gets settled after us with whatever percent we negotiated.

Watch the city ask for one-man squadrols. If you hve to back up or back out; call for another one-man car. Sad state of affairs.

Face it Local 2. We truly got hosed. Everyone just wants their retro money and would have settled for less. Trust me. There are short memories on this job. It's amazing. Our Union reps suck, our pension board sucks and our Brass really really sucks. They're all "qualified", whatever the fuck that means today. We'll continue to get hosed and don't you forget it. No back-bone will lead to this every time.
