Entrance Exam Today

Any reports from the scene?

The media is calling this both "a record number of applicants," (which is a lie) and "the largest number of applicants in 10 years" (which is slightly closer to the truth).

Of the under 10,000 applying, a whopping 200 will be hired next year (supposedly), which doesn't even cover the retirements thought last April.

Any bets on how many of the 200 spots are already taken via pre-ordained "lottery" picks?

AND WITH J-FLEDS TRACK RECORD OF PROMOTIONS EXPECT MANY OF DALEYS CREW TO BE CLOUTED IN BEFORE HE LEAVES OFFICE.

LOOK FOR PREVIOUS CITY WORKER ALL OVER THE 1ST BATCH OF 200!!!

Why are the powers that be so desperate to spin this into something it ain't?

Start with the need to tell a lie...

Tell the lie...

Repeat the lie...

Encourage others to repeat said lie...

Have a group of people willing to believe both the lie and those needing to tell it...

Have the means to insure the lie being told reaches as many people as possible...

...Eventually, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the lie gains enough gravity to become the truth in the eyes of many.

The person that gets the best score gets lottery number 3000 and never gets hired, but the person that gets the worse score gets lottery number 1 and gets the job. So the best qualified to be a polce officer walks. What a great city we live in run by total and complete idiots. Where is the FOP and the great Chicago media on this example of hiring unqualified people for their police department, oh I forgot scandal sells and unqualified people are best suited for some type of mistake to cause a scandal.

Ok....

Got there for check in at 0615.
Due to lack of signage, I was able to avoid having to Pay for my checked coat.

Test scheduled to start at 0800.

We didn't start until about 0900.

The Proctor Supervisors spent most of their time wandering around telling the proctors to get people to take Off hats and to confiscate any beverage that wasn't water, and to not touch their pencils at all and to raise their hand if they needed the Potty.

10 minutes for the first test phase
9 minutes for the second test phase
Unlimited time for the last phase.

Basic bullshit 9th grade test
Double talk re-worded questions that were asked 5 questions before in a different way.

People getting taken out of the testing area for various reasons (unknown by me.)

There were a lot of Empty assigned seats.

And per a source in the Dept, I've heard that the 200 has been increased to 350. Can someone check that?

A credibly source says they were hoping for 20,000 applicants. Apparently that's too much to ask for as more than half of them were eliminated right off the bat due to zero education/military requirement (did anybody read the application?)

Off topic,Mike, but of notable concern:
The Prairie State came in at No. 2after New York. Illinois is expected to lose 27,000 people this year, consistent with its average annual loss over the last five years. The losses are likely linked to the state's economy and tax structure. Job losses in manufacturing and industrial machinery are likely pushing people out of the state, Karp says, adding that state taxes have also been "an issue" for many residents.

It wasn't bad. The line to get into the parking garage was backed up onto 55 and almost all the way to the Ryan off ramp, that was at ten to 6 this morning.

$3 bucks to check my coat? Thanks.

There was a lot of hurry up and wait so I took the time to count empty seats. I counted a few sections that, total, had seating for 120 people and of those, maybe only 14 or 15 empty seats.

Not a bad day. 2006 was better (read faster) when the test was on a computer. They say results in 8-10 weeks.

I'm a regular reader who participated in the morning session. Fighting to park at 6am wasn't pretty and the mandatory $3.00 coat check in December was a typical Chicago jerkaround, but overall it was well-organized for a city operation of that magnitude.

I was surprised at the way some folks chose to show up for what is essentially a job application, but I suppose the bad economy brings out all types. I was also disappointed how un-comprehensive the exam was compared to some of the sample quizzes I'd taken online. After filling out your name (a struggle for some) it was just 9 minutes on vocabulary, a 10-minute exercise on memorization/analysis and then the background and personality questions.

As a white male with no military experience and a few years on most applicants, I know I'm a longshot for this. My great-grandfather, grandfather and three uncles were all CPD ... I feel something of a calling, but reading the news and SCC every day it's difficult to walk the line between realistic and cynical. For now, I'm just happy to be trying for this and will remain respectfully grateful for all the serving officers for the work they do.

I took the 1985 test and there were 20 or 30,000 applicants. The economy was better then and we still get less applicants now for the job. The unemployment rate in Illinois hovers around 10% now. Now, you don't have to be an actual resident of the city at the time of application, we don't work rotating shifts any longer and I'm sure most are aware the pay is pretty good and the fringe benefits are not bad at all. I'm wondering why there are so few applicants these days. It can't be the 2 years of college, but what are the reasons for the lowered number of people wanting the job?

Now another reason I'm going public; The 5/11 Club Canteen Rig that you have seen at Wakes, Funerals, Hostage Events, Fires, Disasters, etc., etc., etc.; is manned by volunteers who give their free time to get us some coffee, rolls, cocoa, whatever, and do it out of a charity that comes from the heart. Only asking for a Thanks and Smile.
And they beg, cadge, buy all of these things themselves. The city, finally, started to fuel them and now we'll try and get tires from the city too.
C'mon guys and gals, BUCK UP and pass the hat for these good samaritans. I'll ask the FOP to accept contributions and they can then get the USC or Checks to the Canteen Service.

Partway through the forth quarter was several men on the sidelines who were all congressional medal of honor heroes, not Janet Jackson and that idiot she was with making nitwits out of themselves. A commercial showed a team owner who whined that he was in real trouble. Not as much as some of these men will be in when they are put in m harms way next year.. God Bless them all.

She called me after the test and said " You wouldn't believe the people that were testing for the department." She also related that if they administered a POWER test on the spot, by her estimate half would've failed and a quarter would need emergency assistance. She said the test was so easy that she started to second guess some of the questions thinking that they were tricks. I told her sadly no, unfortunately. Really very sad.

I thought the test was very strange. Lots of questions about leadership and motivating employees, but the choices for answers all seemed crappy to me. From what i heard, the vocab section of the test most people didnt finish. I think it was 9 minutes to answer 85 questions....it seems that most people answered anywhere from 40-60. I guess the good news is that they penalize you more for having a wrong answer then they do for leaving it blank. The second section was around 100 questions and you had to read numbers from a chart. Very easy, but time consuming, they did admit that they didnt expect you to answer all the questions.... I think this test is going to weed out a lot of applicants. Plus with only 200 spots, the chances of getting hired are very slim!

That's easy. All that krap that you hear about shortages in I/T is pure b.s.

Look at the huge I/T providers like IBM, it's all moved off shore to India and China where you can get a MS in I/T for pennies on the dollar. Anyone that is hired in the USA is on a short-term basis and churned out and replaced with next years grads at a lower wage.

It's a race to the bottom!

Off topic, but worth a mention...

It's been a while since I last posted, as I have been rolling around in mud, muck, and other disgusting mediums...

Back in Fighting Fillmore, the more things change, the more they stay the same...

To whit...

The Henny-Penny Super-Sniffer, Spy Pods are in full working order. Tact officers can watch those "onesy" transactions that will bring down the economy of the United States if not stopped!!

To the "slim" dispatcher who was calling for half of a beat car to come back out on the street after his partner got settled in the pod room...

In case you don't remember, you sanctimonious goofball, an officer was murdered working 99 while processing a scene. An innocuous task, that is safer that, say, handling an accident at Kedzie/Roosevelt. How many officers have to be killed working 99 for the policy of sending people out 99 is stopped, especially in ghetto districts??

Stop worrying about "clearing the board"...The department is down thousands of officers. If the powers that be want "the board" cleared, they would hire more officers. How much has Shortshanks saved every year due to understaffing?? $172,000,000.00??

But not to worry...it has been related that if the officers want to stay together during a pod mission, the bosses are O.K. with that, as they should be.

So to anyone who is working a pod mission, unless you want to put yourself at unnecessary risk, tell the W/C you would rather not work 99. The Lts and Captain Bay (who is turning out to be quite a prince)understand the need for officer safety.

There was one in August and another in October after a suit was filed over the maximum age limit.

Over 1,400 PPOs hired on in 1986.

Kid- judging by your post, you sound like u have a good head on your shoulders.

anyone here ( that reads this site daily) that took the test today, how hilarious was the last part with all the leadership questions about what a leader should do and be like. All i could think of was how Jody needs to take the last part of the test. some of the answers, which were clearly incorrect spell out Jody Weis like no other. ah wait Jody didnt have to take the test, he didnt have to earn anything or work hard.

how about Senator Meeks running around saying how he wishes us luck and the city needs us. Needs us huh? then why dont you get off your ass and help get more coppers hired? seems like your trying to win some votes and im pretty sure you lost more than gained walking around like a dumbass.

In terms of the vocab, some of those words i can bet my life right now i will one, never USE and two, never see again. very stupid.

The crop of people was by far the most interesting i have seen, that 4'10 80lb female looked like a fine future partner. ( no offense sweetheart)

on a side note, everyone seems to want more cops, but then complains how they got the job. Things will never be like when you got hired, thats just the way it is. and clout isnt something new, its been going on since this country was founded and long before that. It sucks but thats just the way it is, of course i wish it was best man for the job however thats long gone. Now its who you know, not what you know. If it was best man for the job some of the clout kids would still get hired seeing their father, working 20+ years on the streets here have taught them a thing or two and im sure they have the right mindset ( im not referring to the family and friends of the incompetent leadership, we all know who they are, Im referring to the police officers who actually know how to do thier job, have great leadership skills, work hard etc. like the owners to this site and majority who post the real issues in this city.)
I have been reading this site for years and i also know a good deal of coppers, thier sons would make very fine police officers for this city. without pull, in todays age, those kids could get passed for mr. Schmuckatelli who barely passed but checked the right "race" box or because his dad golfs with weis on the weekends. Race should not play into who gets a job, your qualifications and skills should, and clearly im NOT PC so i have no problem saying it., we all know how this works, its such garbage but thats life. Im no were close to rascist, im a realist and im not afraid to say how it is.

you all want more cops, hopefully you get them, its clearly not enough as of now, but hopefully it will help just a tiny bit. 200 is better than 0. its a rat race and it sucks but its better than nothing. The times are changing, it sucks but thats that. The best we can do is just keep fighting and hoping change will come. who knows, im going to try and be positive for 2011, daley gone, weis better be with him. who knows maybe , just maybe we can move slightly in a better direction, how much worse can it get? I also have to say, its pretty sad theres no real police representation in this upcoming mayoral race. emmauel will shit all over you\us\everyone, i can promise you that. I really hope everyone stays safe out there and i hope we can get out there asap to help out. i know how long i have been waiting, too long.

Go bears, tomorrow will be a very very interesting game. Hope the bears can pull it off however cutler still is a cry baby bitch, eat shit jay.

No one is going to dump Jackson for now. It would look too blatantly political (which it would be), and incense black voters, something Rahm wouldn't want to happen. As far as Jimmy "not being a team player," what else would Masters call him? He's stood silently by as Masters has run roughshod over numerous black exempts since he became Chief of Staff. I'd say that's a definite sign of a team player.
or someone who's too afraid for his own position back anyone else in a position to lose theirs.

Just found out...this was a pretty intense test. It sounds like it was designed more like the suburbs have done in years past. I hope it's results are positive and produces the 'best'. (yeah right:) From what I'm hearing..it probably will eliminate a large number of applicants. Time will tell.

12/11/2010 12:42:00 PM

It probably was, but the 6-8 week turn-around on the results are so the city can make "adjustments" when the demographics the revruns want don't turn out as hoped.

One of the more poignant posts in a while that deserves a reread.
Thanks!

Saturday I was watching a college football game. No long hair hanging 3 feet out of their helmet very clean and disciplined. Of course, it was the Army and Navy game. This might have been a college game but these young men were real professionals. I did not see one tattoo as usually seen from forehead to their ass.

Because it's not enough that this job will physically and mentally run you into the ground as it is, but with today's administration if you step on your dick you are on your own to be stripped, sued, fired, spend the rest of your days in callback, and possibly sent to PRISON.

Took the test in the second session.
Insight in the test process. Vocab and the Letter Combo to Number (CodeKey) test was there to see if you value accuracy over completion. Realistically most applicants won't be able to finish in the time allotted. It's not about finishing, the time is there to create "pressure." That's why the Vocab was 10 minutes, and the code key was 9 minutes. Again, the vocab kicks your ass, and they you have even less time for the code key portion. Basically, are you going to pay attention to details when you are told that getting it right is more important than finishing it all.

The pysch portion was pretty standard. Yes they asked the same question 5 different ways to make sure your answers are consistent and not bullshit. They don't want anyone on the extremes. No self centered a$$hats who think my verbal skills are "Outstanding." Just like they don't want anyone who attended multiple undergrad colleges. Or 'fatties' that aren't smart enough to lie and say "I'm just the right weight, and my doc thinks I'm in excellent health."

I was surprised to see some overweight guys out. I'm not ripped like a brickhouse, and could stand to loose some extra lbs. However, I can pass the power test. I can run 1.5 in 12 minutes without trying hard.

I'd rather see the psych test - pass/fail, then a basic skills test ranking order, then physical tests rank order to determine who gets hired first. This test wasn't a basic skills test, and it's no wonder you guys see "is be retiring" memos.

Just my two cents.

BTW $30 for the test, $14 to park in the outside lot, $3 for coat check. I followed instructions and didn't gripe. If you can't deal with a little hurry up and wait, this probably isn't the job for you anyhow. If you can't understand that they say ONLY water, yet you gripe when they take your pop away from you. It's probably not the organization for you either. You don't have to be a robot, but when you are just an applicant, these are basic instructions that you should follow.

I did 99/100 on the number matching part. I was about to fill in the 100th, but they said "pencils down." Dang.

I thought the test was pretty weird. I thought it would have had more reading comprehension or problem solving. This test tells CPD basically nothing about the applicant. And then those who pass this dumbass test get put into a lottery? What a joke.

I really don't have a feel about how I did because the questions were all so convoluted. And I'm a pretty good test-taker (passed the Bar a few years ago).
