Blizzard Watch

  • If you thought the East Coast had it bad last week, brace yourself for the huge storm forecast to overtake the Chicago area this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch starting Tuesday afternoon for much of Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

All told, forecasters expect at least 8 inches in northern central Illinois, and at least 18 inches in the northeast and eastern central parts of the state. Accumulations of at least 18 inches could register in Northwest Indiana and reach 24 inches in some areas
OK, so it's a bunch of snow. At least Shortshanks has been saving salt and cutting back on Streets and San overtime for the past two years. So there should be plenty of both to go around and keep the city up and running, right?

On the other hand, he could just "Bilandic" the whole thing since he's not facing re-election. One last "screw you all" to the serfs.

I've already got all my shopping done. Not going anywhere. Let it rip.

Should have picked up about 300 junk chairs to set out in all kinds of weird places, just to be annoying.

He can order the bulldozers to plow great "X"s in the mess at State and Madison, a la Meigs Field, and leave the rest of the city to just sort of solidify.

It doesn't matter. He is foredoomed to spend eternity raking out the Devil's metallurgical coke ovens -- on his knees hawking up straight black coal tar, wielding a heavy and very hot twenty-foot-long steel clinker hook -- under the benign supervision of the dead of St. Johannes Cemetery, comfortable in their air-conditioned control room...

...and the meek shalll inherit the earth...

The northside and other areas are gonna see at LEAST 20 inches of snow. One model says that we could be seeing 3 to 4 inches per hour. If it keeps on track(which it looks like its gonna) this will surpass previous storms 1999(21.5 inches) and the 23 inches in 1967 and could be chicago largest snowstorm. we are talking about 1.5-2.1 inches of water which in some cases depending on how cold it is could produce up to 30 inches of fluffy snow or 26 inches of wet snow... yes im a big time loser but this is gonna be a big one boys and girls... maybe ill but in a few p days for next few

As stated, it's Chicago and winter.

Stock up and hunker down.

I remember the last HUGE snowfall we had about 5-6 years ago. we had squads going to pick up people from home and bringing them to work. THe streets were insane, had to park on the corners or mains and walk to the jobs.
People were assigned to non caged cars , picking up 2-3 coppers at a time and another to bring them home. it was camaraderie at its best. It was the Department at its best.
I have been on the job for 17 nearly years. Its so sad to have to talk about the past when referring to a good time at work. I feel sorry for anyone with less than say...7 years on the job. your "good old days" weren't that good.
We gotta return to those types of days. We must learn and give reason to trust each other, keep your fucking mouths shut, and be Policemen, not a bunch of bitches gossiping in a hair salon.
Brace yourselves,

50 yrs ago, when I was in grammar school, the TV weather men were more accurate in predicting these storms AFTER we were digging our way out of them.

Nowadays, with all the satellite radar, storm tracking, storm chasing, gizmo technological weather watches and warnings, we are much better able to prepare for these storms/blizzards. Unfortunately, I think the media uses these things to create big news stories and therefore, ratings.

OT It's possible JFED may not be going anywhere. If Emanuel gets in or even Chico JFED may stay. Da Mayo will push JFED to stay on and Da Mayo will still run it under both of them. Both Chico and Emanuel will act as if they are looking for a replacement. After a dog and pony attempt to find a new supe they will retain JFED. It will be told that he cut down on crime, coruption and is doing it all while down a couple thousand police officers. It's very sad because unless your a P.O. the damage he has done will not be exposed. The media on orders of Da Mayo will never give an accurate story on his failed time here.

OT: Kinda rules out another job;

Ex-CTA, schools chief Ron Huberman gets private-equity gig

The man who in many ways was Mayor Richard M. Daley's top aide in recent years has gone into the private-equity business.

Ron Huberman — former head of the Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago Public Schools and a one-time mayoral chief of staff — has begun work as operating executive at Chicago Growth Partners and Prairie Capital.

Though the two Chicago-based firms have separate ownership, they have invested jointly in some deals, and Mr. Huberman will work for both.

In a phone interview and a press release, Mr. Huberman said his task will be to find investment and buyout opportunities in three fields he knows well: education, transportation and security. (Mr. Huberman once worked as a Chicago police officer, eventually rising to deputy superintendent, and headed the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communication, developing the current 911 phone system.)

"I think there is a great opportunity to build some great companies here with outstanding investment returns," he said. "Their sector focus fits very nicely with my operating experiences."

Said Prairie Capital founding partner Steve King, "We think Ron can help us seek out companies that help our public-sector organizations become more efficient."

Mr. Huberman said neither firm currently does business with the city or any city agencies.

Stop that. You are not a dork. The dork is the one who has no idea what's going on in the physical world - you'll see them walking down the street soaked to the skin in nothing more than a T-shirt and shorts during a major howling, horizontal-rain-at-33-degrees-F. frontal passage, clutching their cell phone like it's gonna save them.

No clue, no hat, no jacket -- if they weren't in the city, they'd freaking die.

The Blizzard of (January 11-14) 1979 was special but my all-time favorite was January 26-27, 1967. The day before, we were sitting outside the police academy in our shirtsleeves during lunch hour.

After hitchhiking from Laramie Ave. down the one-lane plowed inbound Ike for a couple hours, we finally arrived at 720 W. O'Brien St.

Only one guy was there--a homeroom instructor who lived nearby. He looked at us as if we were insane and told us to go back home.

Abandoned snowbound trucks were being looted in 011. The city was at a complete standstill.

The powers of blind speculation and wild guessing is strong with you.

You guys need to stop focusing on Weis so much when everyone with any real knowledge of what has happened to this Department can point the finger squarely at the power mad Chief of Staff, Masters! I'd speculate that he must be making up for some shortcoming. Below the belt, perhaps?

You are the dimwit, know the facts.. I am not voting for Miguel, because I believe Chico will do a better Job, even though I am a Puerto Rican like Miguel, he would be my second choice after Chico... that being said, the same company that has made our stickers for years is the same one that made the stickers, it is their mistake, not like he sat in his basement making the stickers himself, and even more importantly, DelValle was not an HDO Hack and in fact, was often at odds with HDO during his years as a state Senator... was never an insider..

acually this is going to be a bad one. One of my hobbies is meteorology(ok, yeah im a dork) and all of the models coming in that ive been running are on track with what the news is reporting. from 290 south to about kankakee from the lake to about I355 we could see 24+ inches of snow...

****************************

no, i wouldnt call you a dork just a pretty intelligent person... however with that being said you will never be a boss since you are smart. Good job with the weather report though, It seems like you were pretty dead on with what the pros are saying on the news..I use the term pros loosly except for tom skilling, hes good.

here's his chance.

cut the deal with Chico, withdraw from the race and back Chico all the way.

unless Miguel is really a shill for the rahmbutt, like braunski is, this is the move to make.

if Del Valle is really serious about doing something good for our city, working with Mayor Chico, along with the newly elected rookies on the city council, would do more to repair the damage done by the old school thievery machine, than being the spoiler that allows the rahmbutters to continue the rape and pillaging of our city's working, taxpaying citizenry.

do the right thing now, Miguel, unless you really are just a daley machine shill.

Yeah, I'm SURE you saw snowmobiles used here in '67 by emergency responders. In your dreams.

Cops were traveling four deep, uniforms and non-uniformed together. No side streets, just sliding to a stop on the nearest big street near the call, pushing the car out of the spot once they handled the job.

Ambulances were lucky to get within a block of the calls. My neighbor had her baby in the living room, paramedics attending, then they took her out on a sled and wrapped the baby in a big blanket and carried the baby to the ambulance.

Yeah, right. Snowmobiles in '67.

You need everything you normally need; in addition, winter clothing, flashlights, sleeping bags, and camp stoves (plus fire extinguisher) are also good in case of power outage.

Keep stuff like this in the car too in case you get stuck and have to overnight in it. Best not to drive at all in a real bad whiteout.

Here's a link to a military survival manual that may be helpful.

http://www.equipped.com/
fm21-76.htm

Took me five seconds to find that. Tons of this stuff on the web. Do searches on "survival," "preparedness," "cold weather survival," etc. You'll have a complete library in no time.

If power/heat goes out, everyone retreat into one bedroom to conserve warmth and cover the windows with insulating material -- sleeping bags, quilts, plastic, carpeting, cardboard, anything you've got. Screw "what it looks like to the neighbors." Doesn't matter. Emergency.

Do not use burning-type appliances in here; cook outside if necessary, then bring the food in.

Best idea -- start planning and stocking up before, not during, the blizzard. (grin). I got in with my last load last night j-u-u-u-st as the first whirls of snow were beginning to blow across the sidewalk...

Stay aware of weather conditions -- go to weather.gov and type in "Chicago,IL," or whatever your town name, and there is your key to fantastic radar pictures, all sorts of info.

God bless and stay safe and warm...

I'm tired and may have been imprecise.

Yeah, I was born here and remember choppin' ice in '67.

In the '79 storm -- and man, that was a waist-deep affair -- when I was living at State and Pearson, I saw a couple of guys driving snowmobiles -- carefully -- "on the public way." I heard later that they were volunteers delivering blood from one hospital over to Northwestern Memorial near us.

Was that you in the squad stuck over on the curb, hardly able to move, hollering "GET THOSE VEHICLES OFF THE STREET!" over the PA horn?

*

High comedy. Anyway, as I said, I heard on WBBM radio yesterday that CFD paramedics "would have access to" snowmobiles for this go. That was all they said. Still sounds like a real good idea.

Don't know if the city maintains any snowmobiles, if they've gotten some donated from dealers, or whether guys will trailer their own rigs in to use if needed.

Is it bicycles or motorbikes they have for some paramedics downtown, to get through the crowds fast? I know I once saw something 2-wheeled painted CFD, but it's been a while since I've been down there.

God bless and stay safe. Gonna snow for quite a while...

1. as long as you still have water, electricity, natural gas, an ample food supply and your kids don't, won't, and/or, can't drive you fucking crazy, hunker down, stay inside and wait it out.

2. if your heating unit depends upon electricity to function, and you don't have a wood burning stove or fireplace, if the electric goes out, bake a whole shitload of cookies and move the kid's beds into the kitchen. also, you can always keep warm by taking a lot of hot baths.

3. remind yourself, as often as necessary, that you love your kids, you really do. and your spouse, should the same rule apply.

routinely driving around with the blue lights on is the dumbest order yet. The traffic can't move as is. Now everyone will be thinking the police are on emergency runs runs and everything will be fucked up even more. Jesus we have idiots running this circus.

Deloughery as the acting commander of 017---- perfect spot for her as she has been acting her entire career--- could we next make her the acting commander of toilet paper and paper towels supply room...
2/01/2011 03:30:00 AM

Has to be toilet paper only--the paper towels have been removed from the bathrooms (at least in 015)

More info on the snowmobiles the CFD paramedics will be using during our snowstorm -- TV showed "Shomer (sic?) Rentals" stickers on the windshields, so I guess the city's renting 50 snowmobiles for the duration.

The fireman plan to tow a yellow fiberglass Stokes basket behind to help carry their gear, and will even transport a patient in this way if necessary.

Engine 91 was said to have already done a snow-mo run tonight. Don't know what house that is, too tired to look it up.

"We're there when you need us." Great!

Wish I could say that about Tom Byrne. 025, have only seen 2-3 plows down Grand Avenue in hours, and those with minimal salt turned on. We got a mountain of the stuff -- if not for now, for when?

When Picardi ran S&S, they'd crack the whip pretty good; I'd see plows staging around Grand and Austin 'way before even a relatively minor storm, fully loaded and ready, and then see more than a dozen passes up and down the street all night 'til it was "black and runnin' water."

It's all snow and getting rutted up; I hear and see those little front-wheel drives whining to pull the car around the corner. Radio says other arterial streets are also getting several inches deep and rutted. It's after 10 PM and hardly any traffic, so what the f**k?

I'll be happy "not to try to pass one of your plows on the right" if I ever see one. Jeez.

Can't hardly see across the street right now. Unbelievable. Yup, this is one for the books.

Another bit of info -- TV shot of a snowmobile taking off on a run from a firehouse. The yellow Stokes basket was strapped along one side, not in the way at all. If needed, why, there it was.

Good deal.

Australians flee, jam shelters ahead of "catastrophic" cyclone

By Rob Taylor– 27 mins ago
CAIRNS, Australia (Reuters) – Thousands of people fled their homes and crammed into shelters in northeastern Australia on Wednesday as the most powerful cyclone in the country's history barreled toward a string of popular tourist cities lining the coast.

Police were forced to turn away people from some shelters which were already full, and engineers warned that even "cyclone proof" homes could be blown apart by winds expected to reach 300 km (186 miles per hour) when it hits later on Wednesday.

That lowly public servant took the jail time for the irish cabal thats running this city. Vote Chico!

In 1967, I had a sled and snow hill. I couldn't figure out why all the adults seemed upset. In 1979, I had a new honey, plenty of Led Zeppelin albums, and no school for a week. In 1999, I had a job working for a tyrant. In 2011, I have the same job with a dictator looming on the horizon.

When the next blizzard hits, I'll be watching it from Arizona or New Mexico.

Chico will not keep Weis here a minute longer than he would have to. Chico met with a group of retirees and high ranking CPD officers weeks ago, and he has the scoop on J-Fled and 3M; I wouldn't expect to see either around if Chico is successful.

With the oncoming blizzard, the news did not even report on the shit head that killed his girlfriend and her friend in front of the kids. Then killed himself after threatening to shoot police. Another tough guy too chicken to take on the police! This will definitely ruin JFLED's homicide rate. Great job to all 14th district officers, neighboring district officers and SWAT! Be safe out there guys!
