Murder Rate Falls

  • Chicago recorded 435 homicides in 2010, marking the city's lowest murder rate in 45 years, according to preliminary statistics released Saturday by the Chicago Police Department.

The 2010 total was down from 460 in 2009 and 513 in 2008, and is the lowest since 1965, when the city had 395 killings.

  • Wesley Skogan, a crime and policing expert at Northwestern University's Institute for Policy Research, attributed some of the overall decline to smarter policing, including the use of technology to do real-time deployments of officers, and the higher incarceration rates in the 1990s.

But a nagging concern for the department, and communities, is that violent crime still has a chokehold on some neighborhoods.

We're still waiting to see how Governor Quinn's early release program's recidivism rates are affecting the minority neighborhoods where crime seems to be a "nagging concern," but that seems to have fallen off the media radar for some reason.

Why is the murder rate down?

Most of the projects are gone and alot of the residents moved to the burbs.

Better medical care, in the 60s and 70s if your were shot you went to the hospital in a wagon or a CFD Cadillac ambulance staffed with firemen or police without medical training.

People shuld realize the police can't tell were the next homicide will occure. If the computer could tell that all Jfled boys would be big lotto winners.+

HOW MANY SHOOTING WERE CLASSIFIED ACCIDENTAL.

HOW MANY DEATH INVESTIGATION ARE CURRENTLY OPEN?

Interesting, how we all know that medical science is preserving the lives of many who are undeserving. But J-Fled has refused to provide statistics of Agg. Batts, which we all know jumped up bigtime in 2010. As long as he remains silent on that, the so-called stats are flawed, and everyone knows it.

The unsuspecting white victim better wake up. They are the prey, and they can play a part in this if they want.

I wonder what the murder rate would have been if the department was properly staffed and had adequate resources.

Oh, and better leadership. How could we forget about that.

DC's rate also fell to a 40+ year low. Would never have believed it at the time they replaced Ramsey with internal-pick Lanier, but its happened under her and Fenty as mayor. DC has gentrified in the past few years in a way that would put most larger cities to shame. Nevertheless, Lanier and the DCPD deserve props for putting people to work where needed. And the scandal-rate has dropped basically to zero under her.

That would explain why the mayor passed the new gun laws requiring range practice right? Like, how can we keep the taxpayers intimidated with fear so we can extort more taxes from them if the bad guys are bad shots?

Fascinating Chicago census data rolling in...black population is in decline. Hispanic population still growing and moving north and not one ethnic group represents the outright majority for the city.

---clip--

The analysis of census data found losses of more than 10,000 Hispanics in Logan Square and South Lawndale, which includes the heavily Mexican Little Village neighborhood.

***

According to the 2009 estimates, the number of whites fell by more than 5,000 in each of four community areas: Portage Park, Belmont Cragin, Ashburn and West Lawn.

***

Since 2000, Archer Heights became the latest swath of the Southwest Side bungalow belt where Hispanics have become the majority....

***

The city’s black population fell by about 11 percent between 2000 and 2009, a pattern reflected in many neighborhoods across the South and West Sides. Twenty-four of the 25 city-designated community areas with the largest black populations in 2000 saw declines, according to the analysis of the five-year population estimates for 2005-9.

***

Some of the most dramatic drops in black population came in sections of the city where the Chicago Housing Authority’s “Plan for Transformation” led to the demolition of high-rise public housing. A section of the Riverdale area on the far south side, which included the Altgeld Gardens development, registered the biggest loss of blacks, from nearly 9,500 a decade ago to scarcely more than 5,000 in the latest statistics.

Large declines also were reported in many other black neighborhoods, from South Shore to Austin, where the black community has lost an estimated 17 percent of its 2000 population.

“Black fertility is down quite a bit,” not only in Chicago but also across the country, said Kenneth Johnson, a former Loyola University professor who is senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey Institute.

The population in Chicago is DECREASING. Chicago now has only 2.7 million people compared to 1965 when the city had 3.6 million people. You CANNOT compare the two murder rates.

Do you remember what Cabrini Green and the Robert Taylor homes were like? They were killing fields. By getting rid of those building has helped reduce the overall murder rate.

Chicago police are down thousands of police officers. It's only common sense that crime would be down too due to less police reports.

Lets be honest here, crime has a chokehold on some neighboorhoods not because of the police, but because of poor parenting, lack of opportunity, and just plain laziness. How many people in high crime areas are living off the government and have been for generations? Selling drugs is just a second income.

Let's put it in perspective.

Chicago's brass is touting a 5.5% drop in homicides.

---clip--

(nationwide) According to the FBI, murders dropped 7.1 percent in the first six months of 2010 while robberies decreased by 10.7 percent. Reports of vehicle thefts also dropped by 9.7 percent.

FBI crime reports have shown a steady decrease in crimes rates since 2008. In the annual report for 2009, released in September, reports of violent crimes dropped 5.3 percent and reported property crimes fell 4.6 percent.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/20/national-crime-statistics_n_799099.html

-----------------

If the leaderships crime programs where working how come Chicago is not beating the national averages?

Are we not just a part of a national trend...(if you're buying y=the numbers at all)

Meanwhile the top brass gambles with peoples lives to save money and that is showing up in the stats but not touted here....

Police Deaths Jump 37 Percent In 2010

[...] so-called cluster killings of more than one officer helped make 2010 a particularly deadly year for law enforcement. Deaths in the line of duty jumped 37 percent to about 160 from 117 the year before, according to numbers as of Tuesday compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a nonprofit that tracks police deaths.

There also was a spike in shooting deaths. Fifty-nine federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2010, a 20 percent jump from last year's figures, when 49 were killed.

**

73 officers died in traffic incidents, a rise from the 51 killed in 2009, according to the data.

**

Last year's toll of 117 officers killed was a 50-year low that encouraged police groups. But this year's total is more the norm than an anomaly: The number of police deaths has topped 160 five times since 2000, including 240 in 2001. The annual toll routinely topped 200 in the 1970s and before that in the 1920s.

The deaths were spread across more than 30 states and Puerto Rico – with the most killings reported in Texas, California, Illinois, Florida and Georgia. The two law enforcement agencies with the most deaths were the California Highway Patrol and the Chicago Police Department, each with five.

Ten of the shooting deaths came from five tragedies in which several officers were shot and killed in groups

Any chance the CPD made a mistake? Or has Redline got it wrong? http://homicides.redeyechicago.com/neighborhoods/

Redline claims 2010 total of 446 homicides, 11 more than cited in the report.

Coincidentally, the Redline database counts as causes of death: 1 abuse, 2 Arson, 3 car Crash, 2 Neglect and 3 unlisted cause of death in their 446.

Those causes were also included in the Redeye 2009 and 2008 totals of 462 and 511.

I don’t trust any of the data coming out of CPD Headquarters at the moment, I believe they are trying to manipulate the media and spin the stories.

the amount of "death investigations" are at all time high. Medical examiners can call blunt force trauma, asphyxiation, as homicide - but no offender, witness means it's a death investigation by JPUD standards. Just like suspicious "accidental deaths" of public officials, thugs with bullets in their skulls, and a kid who can't swim jumping into a frozen lake for a water bottle in the same area of the highly safe site of The Taste of Thug-ago'.
Oh no-no-no, there's no more "business as usual" since JFLED took over the CPD. That's just silly.

The powers that be are desperately spinning and fudging the overall crime stats.

Figures lie and liars figure.

...Throw that in with the whole plethora of convenient omissions that The Street Police have been pointing out on these pages for the longest time.

Bear with us... It's been a while.

If we mix/mingle/mangle concepts, please understand that we're trying to keep a spotlight on the numerical/statisical "fookery" coming from 111 & 3510

What is the true hidden "constant" in regard to the formula used to conjure the stats j-fled is desperately bally-hooing?

A factual number times a factual number squared, divided by a horseshit constant equals a horseshit number as a product/answer.

GIGO in other words.

We note with amusement, the increasingly desperate and strident tone of these pronouncements.

To wit, "...lowest rate since 1965..."

1965 is irrelevant to the city being torn to pieces RIGHT NOW!

Why are Agg. Batteries tabulated per incident instead of per capita?

Because the news is really bad and they want to be able hide skew the numbers.

The number of murders may be down (the use of the phrase "murder rate" is indicative of some major "fookin' around") and it's not because the local talent ain't tryin'from what we see.

The increase of assaults/batteries to and murders of Police Officers is WAAAYY UP and the powers that be are leaning on their friends in liberal academia and the msm to help with the propaganda message that this isn't an alarming trend and portray The Police as being "afraid to do their jobs."

With that said...

If this bullshit j-fled is spewing were sworn testimony in Federal court (and we so hope and wish that tis were to come to pass some way some how) he would end up standing on a scaffold for perjury.

We would love to see that. Maybe he will get the treatment reserved for organized crime figures... Eighty years old and going to get the mail and seeing a swarm of black suits with guns converging on him.

A high pitched 12 year old girl scream...

Dropped mail and attempting to run back into the house while shitting the elastic out of his drawers...

Being perp-walked into the MCC on the 6 o'clock news with the famous "I just shit on myself, again" look on his face.

Some things ARE worth waiting for.

Meanwhile the numerical fuckery continues with stats as crooked as j-fled's head.

Are you still mad about not getting that cool Inter-Ocular Spacer "dee-vice" you ordered for Christmas from the back pages of a muscle magazine?

Oh... Yours would have to be a special order because you have a five-head instead of a forehead?

Just go away already...

The real question should be the number shot, not the number killed. For this give credit to medical technology and improvements in treating gunshots (which Chicago area doctors get plenty of practice in). How many people are getting shot compared to earlier numbers?

Time to admit that this is not the worst of times. The 70's were not the medical Dark Ages. There are significantly fewer homicides because there are significantly fewer attempts to commit homicide. Of course, this might direct attention from some of the whiners, but the fact is that in spite of inept leadership, inadequate patrol manpower, and the perception of the sky falling, 435 homicides is 535 homicides short of the all time high of 970 in 1974. What does this say about the affect of policing on the homicide rate?

Man allegedly attacked family with blowtorch

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Last Modified: Jan 2, 2011 06:30PM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Attempted murder charges have been filed against a Puerto Rico man who police say burned his parents and seven other relatives with a blowtorch.

The island’s Justice Department says 45-year-old Justino Sanchez Diaz called a family meeting Saturday at his parents’ home in the northern town of Florida, and then attacked.

A statement from the department says the parents suffered severe burns and were hospitalized in critical condition.

The other seven were also being treated for their wounds but were not burned as severely.

The suspect was arrested and charged with nine counts of attempted murder. The Justice statement did not speculate on a possible motive.

It was not immediately clear Sunday if he had a lawyer.
