Media Influence on Sheeple

  • As Chicagoans put away their snowblowers and "dibs" chairs — for now — city officials can look back on the Groundhog Day Blizzard of 2011 and congratulate themselves: An overwhelming majority of residents think the city did a good job responding to the storm, according to a Tribune/WGN poll.

Nearly three-quarters of the Chicagoans surveyed — 73 percent — gave the city an overall passing grade for how it handled the storm.

In fact, when it came to the storm's most conspicuous consequence — the hundreds of vehicles snowbound along Lake Shore Drive — respondents were more likely to blame the stranded drivers than the city.
Almost 1,000 cars abandoned on Lake Shore Drive and the city gets a passing grade? Not only as passing grade, but the respondents blame the stranded drivers?

We don't know about you, but if we see an entrance ramp open to a main thoroughfare, we assume that the road is passable, drivable and safe for us to proceed on. We mean, why else would you leave a road open?

But Shortshanks and Tommy Thumb and everyone else started the blame game early and said the citizens should have known better than to drive on a road for pete's sake. Why think you could get anywhere on a road? The media ran with it and all of the sudden, the city did a fine job during a blizzard.

Now imagine if you had a major newspaper or two making political endorsements for a candidate that says things like "politicians shouldn't trade on their connections to make money," but somehow forget to ask that same candidate how he made $18 million for under two years work for a connected buyout of a power company. Or how he got paid another few hundred thousand for attending just 6 meetings for a government agency that precipitated the mortgage meltdown. Or how his enemies list rivals that of Richard Nixon.

Oh wait, you don't have to imagine it. It's happening right now and the object of the media affection is approaching 50% of the vote total from people who don't know any better.

It was more important to plow out parks than your side streets.

This snow storm was a FUCK UP on the City's part.

Okay, I would never have taken Lake Shore Drive that day.

But I was listening to the news constantly. I was driving when the snow started and I saw how scary it got and how fast it turned vicious.

That being said, we (you know, those PUBLIC SERVANTS Rahm and everyone else harps about) are responsible for those who aren't bright enough or informed enough to be responsible for themselves. That's why most of us came on this job.

And the mayor, and Byrne, PUT those people in harm's way by letting them drive on LSD that afternoon.

I would give the overall blizzard response a C - passing, but not good. I'd give the handling of Lake Shore Drive a D. If they'd closed it earlier as pre-emptive action against later problems, they could have gotten a B overall. The fact that the wards didn't hold up their end on clearing pedestrian paths through the plow mounds at critical intersections until the weekend or later would keep them from getting an A.

OT- From District299 blog - CPS - Real-time data isn't just for Twitter and breaking news anymore. This Slate magazine article notes that "predictive" policing is being used to help law enforcement detect likely hotspots for violence or theft in the near future (Can police really predict crime before it happens?). Much the same thing has already been attempted in CPS, where the district claimed it could identify kids who were likely to become involved in school violence ahead of time. (The statistical modeling was always under question and Catalyst notes that the effort never got off the ground.) What's next? "Predictive teaching" is my guess -- aily or hourly feedback to teachers about which kids are headed off the rails in ways that might not otherwise be noticeable.

The fiasco on LSD should be a major embarrassment. For the many millions the city has spent on emergency planning, and how to handle (usually terrorist, but should also be any natural) disasters, having over 1000 people stranded IN THE CITY is unacceptable. And for those who are blaming the drivers, it was a fricken CTA bus that caused the nightmare. Even days after, South LSD had snow drifts in varying lanes, forcing drivers into unsafe lane changes. Side streets are still awful - I guess we're waiting for this weekend for the snow to melt?

I think S&S did a horrible job of removing the snow. As usual. I live on a street in which every single home has a side drive. NO ONE parks their cars on the street yet when the plow comes down the street he will make one or two passes right down the center never once going to either side of the street and plowing to at least one curb. So as I look out my window I see snow sitting about three feet tall in the curb lane on each side of the street meaning that there is one small lane right down the center of the street for cars to drive on. So if you are driving west on my street and another car is coming east, one of them has to pull into someones driveway to allow the other to pass. It is ridiculous. But this is the way they plow in the City of Chicago. One year I watched as they plowed right down the center of the street four times within twenty minutes never once going to either curb. One of my neighbors stoppped one of them once and asked the driver if he could plow to ONE of the curbs and he told her that he doesn't get paid to plow to the curb. All of this means that I now live on a one lane street until probably June.

I went out last night I proceeded west bound on Talcott. When I got close to Canfield I sat in traffic for about twenty minutes unable to move because of the cars turning S/B on Canfield from W/B Talcott. Once again the traffic was held up. Why? Because the city didn't plow all the way to the curb on Talcott at the corner which eliminatd one lane of traffic. So anybody that wanted to continue west on Talcott or north on Canfield had to wait until all the cars that were turning onto southbound Canfield made the turn. And then to put icing on the cake of frustration, as soon as one crosses Canfield into Park Ridge each street is plowed curb to curb. I wish the city would send it's plow drivers out to Park Ridge to see how the pro's plow streets. And before anyone here blasts me by bringing Park Ridge into this by claiming that they don't have as many streets to plow or they have more equippment, Park Ridge as the same amount of trucks and drivers per mileage requiring plowing as each city S&S ward has.

Worse than this bullshit is the article in today's paper concerning the city ordinance that requires both a homeowner and business owner to make sure their sidewalks are clear of snow of face a fine. The streets aren't clear; the city packed the snow into the alleys and on to sidewalks and parkways and now the city wants to send out inspectors to fine the good peopleof this city. Yeah, they're doing a great job.

Citizens need to quit relying on thier government to shovel their walks and wipe their ass.

Drove the other day S/B on Oak Park Av. in the city's NW side. Junk all over the street for people to claim parking spots and most of the street still isn't plowed. As soon as I crossed Oak Park Av. S/B at North Av. and entered the actual town of Oak Park, guess what? Yes the street was plowed curb to curb, no junk on the street claiming spots, and the sidewalks giving access to the crosswalks were cleared and shoveled.Wait it gets better, all of the above was the same on all the small side streets! Why can this small town accomplish this while the City That Works cant? Shit I want the guy in charge of snow removal in Oak Park come work for Chicago.
While continuing my trip S/B on Oak Park AV. I crossed Roosevelt Av. I entered the Town of Berwyn. A little version of the 10th district, guess what I observed? That's right, the road not plowed curb to curb, junk all over claiming parking spots, crosswalks inaccessible, and the side streets were just as bad.
Later I went to the 11th district and the street Harison in front of the station has not been plowed! Both sides on the curb side!, cant park or gain access to the main entrance and citizens cant access a CTA bus from the bus shelter.Yeah right the city did good job with this blizzard.

The media in this city are by no means reporters or require any investigatory skills. They are nothing more than parasites who leach on to other information sources. i.e. SCC and "report" on what they steal.
When that kind of bullshit reporting is not done, it is nothing more than "reporting" what city hall throws into their little mouths to eat and treat like the fucking gospel.
I'm sure everyone saw the big headline that police complaints were supposedly down because of fucking J-Fled! Are you fucking serious Frank Main?
We are down anywhere from 1000-2000 cops, the working policeman has been castrated by politicians, the liberal media, and fucking lawyers and you think J-Fled is to take the credit?
Get off your knees Main, and maybe ask some questions about manpower, felony arrests, lawsuits and maybe you can create your own conclusion rather than being force fed city hall's numbers to make J-Fled look like he's done a goddamn thing other than fuck this department up!
The Scum times tell us who to vote for, why city workers don't deserve pensions, and how good Jody and Da mayo are running things.
The Tv media liberals serves the same master and broadcasts what they are told to and when in order to sway public opinion on elections or union contracts like the police/ fire or all other hot ticket items.
The media in this town should be ashamed of themselves for not having any balls to ask and "report" on all the corruption and bullshit that goes on right under our noses at city hall.
When they decide to remove their balls from city halls collective purse maybe some actual journalism could happen. Will it? NEVER!

The city did a fair job on the snow removal. The grade should be dropping the longer it takes them to widen main streets to the curbs so we are not losing lanes as we drive those streets. It also needs to open up some of the side street intersections. There are some of those intersections that are practically unnegotiable.

As far as keeping LSD open you can go many ways on that one. I believe that the best solution for LSD would have been if you choose to keep it open at least keep the buses off there. 50 -60 mile an hour winds and big wind targets like buses make for a bad combination during a snow storm.

Yep, and not to mention the CTA riders
who have to stand in the street to
wait for buses because the CTA has not
dug out the frozen concoction that is

bad for riders with small children and
if the driver has to entend the lift
or kneel the bus for wheelchair
passengers. There ain't no room.

I don't agree with you here, SCC. Common sense and personal responsibility needs to come into play - from the citizens who have so much trouble thinking for themselves on how to handle their everyday "emergencies". Depending on the police to make decisions for them - or the City - is the problem.

Yes the entrance ramp was open. Whether or not they should have been closed sooner, lets play this out. As a smart citizen who has lived in the City for over 20 years and thus - through 20 winters.... hmmmmm what should I do? If I choose to take LSD, the consequences are I get stuck. I learn my lesson and next time choose a different route. Thank goodness I'm not a mindless lemming.

I left work late Wednesday night and took major roads and the expressway all the way. Snow had been plowed on every road I chose AND the Kennedy. I tipped my hat to the City - the VERY night of the snowstorms completion and all that snow had been removed. I'm sure not everyone could say the same depending on where they came from. But I am one of those 73% who will say to the City - good job. There is always room for improvement.

SCC, I disagree. While Shortshanks and Byrne did majorly f-up the LSD thing...what kind of moron are you to get on the drive during a blizzard? (out of towners, excused, due to lack of experience)
Accept the consequences for the decisions you make, people! Despite the week long blizzard warnings, the endless advice of "don't go out unless you absolutely have to", and perhaps we would remember our own mothers teaching us to " dress for the weather, because you never know..." some people still chose to brave the drive.

The purpose of the main stream, corporate owned/government directed, media is to guide public opinion and protect corporate intrests.
This objective is persued through the use of omission, combining lies w/ obvious truth and repeating outright lies to the point they are accepted as truth.
News reports in all media formats are combined w/ content in magazines, t.v. shows and movies to subtley introduce and reinforce the desired opinion.
This is why people with no personal knowledge of specific matters have such strong opinions regarding them.
For example : guns are bad, Obama is the best candadate and public pensions are responsible for government deficit.
We are taught in school that the main function of the media is to alert the people of government abuse of power.
If this was ever the case, it is no longer so.

LSD was jammed because of a couple of traffic accidents, one including a bus that blocked all lanes.

The Ryan, Kennedy, & Ike were not jammed because there were no accidents blocking the traffic lanes.

Did the state plow 94, 90, etc any better than the city did LSD.

Seems it could-a happened on any x-way or all of them at the same time. Just luck.

If these polls are remotely accurate it's amazing that such a large percentage of sheeple are taking the spoon feeding of the media and supporting the anointed one. I gaurantee that lots of them won't think so highly of him once he gets in and starts bending everyone over.
The media is treating Rahm with kid gloves just like they did with Obama. Why let tough questions or the truth get in the way of their agenda. Time to wake up people. Think for yourselves!

OT: WHY is it that Daley is going to travel to China AGAIN, just before he leaves office?

What is the justification for WASTING OUR CITY's MONEY on this obvious junket?

How does he get away with giving himself (and probably twenty of his closest friends) a 'lovely parting gift'???

Isn't theft a felony?

Jesus, we got a little snow. There are places in this world that get 50 inches of snow over night, on a regular basis and nobody complains. Does it inconvience people? Yes it does, but it is not the end of the world.

Go look at the I-70 corridor through Colorado. They have few guard rails and do not use salt. If you get stuck on the highway, it is your fault. Pay attention to the weather, have a blaket, water, food, and more than a quarter tank of gas. If a major storm is predicted and you choose to take certain roads, it is on you, especially if you are unprepared.

It seems like the press is now being controlled by the Dem. machine...a passing grade on the blizzard...come on...There are still a number of NW side streets that are barely passable... NW Highway is still only one and a half lanes and now I hear they have street and san workers ringing doorbells and reminding people to shovel their sidewalks because its neighborly and it's the law...stating you could get hit with a $50 fine...Yes let ticket all the senior citizens who for some stupid reason are unable to shovel their sidewalks...Way to go Mr. Daley....Can't wait for the next hired truck scandal in a few years maybe then Daley and Byrne will get indicted. Well a person can dream.

scc, I think the city did fine during the snowstorm. My neighborhood was completly fine. Why are you blowing it out of proportion? The lakeshore drive thing was unforseen in my eyes and I think the eyes of alot of people. I know you hate the current regime(as do I) but you really tryin a little hard on this one. as they ususally say scc.... It is what it is. The city did ok getting the streets clear and warning people. Im not trying to defend the city and definatly not shortshanks but I also dont like it when someone takes a side and tries to push thier side just because they dont like the other side. I like being fair and I like to base my viewpoints on facts... the fact is that the snowstorm was a bad one and the city actually kept up with it... everything has its glitches which happened here but overall it could have been worst... its not the doomsday as your tryin to make it.

Some of the worst offenders are big businesses -- Commonwealth Edison at Grand and Narragansett, Burger King at Grand and Fullerton, and Pep Boys auto parts at 6811 W. Grand in 025 are a couple that come to mind off the top of my head -- as well as a vast number of banks and absentee realtors who own foreclosed houses and vacant/for lease/abandoned buildings and lots. Their names and phone numbers are usually on a sign stuck right on the front of the building or in the lot.

If the city wanted to haul in some real money, it'd stop sneaking around working people's houses at night up in 016, looking for expired city stickers, and just send people down any main street in the daytime to write violation after violation after violation for failure to clear sidewalks.

But -- we know who the Mayor likes, and who he doesn't...

Recently received a piece of Rahm's literature that has his reproduced signature on it. It shows some sort of accent mark placed high over the scribble that stands for the 'm' in Rahm. Is there anyone that can and will explain?

Regardless, I am voting for Gery Chico! And, if they love Chicago, Mosely-Braun, Del Valle, Walls and Van Pelt-Watkins should all toss their support to Chico, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

The "blame the victim" propaganda is sinking in nicely. They need to "become proactive" (gag) and "accept more responsibility."

The health care industry is spinning that crap out by the mile. You're responsible for telling the doctor to wash his hands. You're responsible for making sure the right medication is running into your arm. Etc.

Janet Napolitano says that the terrorist threat here is greater than at any time since 9/11. Therefore, it's your fault if you get blown up in some building, get killed in some mass shooting. You ignored the warning.

Most of the "reporters" today did not grow up in the city. They never heard the stories from the working class. They went to college, studied journalism. Now they come back to the city. They live downtown, and think they discovered places, as Gene and Junes for Hot Dogs.
They are dumb enough to get in line for Rahm.

Yeah, NW HWY (with senior citizen buildings) all clogged up while the Mayor calls for volunteers to go shovel out Madison and 63rd Street, and Tom Dart is digging out hydrants in Des Plaines.

Half the doorbells on NW are either failed manufacturers or vacant/unstarted/unsold condominiums by now anyway...boy, did the speculators destroy that area in ten years.

Some do, some don't -- all have the manufacturer's logo.

I can remember when Popular Mechanics, say, used to scrupulously airbrush out the manufacturer's name on a bottle of glue appearing in a photo in a "how-to" article, to avoid any accusations of commercial favoritism.

Ethics. Since that time, of course, the tables have turned, and manufacturers pay for "product placement" in movie scenes, etc...
