Officer Shot Story More Involved

  • Two people were found dead in a North Side apartment shortly before suspects in the slayings shot a Chicago police officer and crashed during a chase a short distance away Saturday evening, officials said. Police fatally shot one suspect after the chase.

Chicago police were on the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. where two people were found stabbed to death, officials said, citing preliminary information. A third person who was believed to be stabbed there was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

After the attackers left the apartment building, a Chicago police officer attempted to stop a vehicle suspected in the crime. Gunfire erupted from the vehicle, which contained at least three people, and the officer was wounded in the leg, officials said. The shooting happened near the intersection of Broadway and Thorndale Avenue, officials said.
Sound like some pretty good police work any way it plays out. The entire story is worth the read so click here. There's going to be more than a few medals passed out on this one.

It is almost impossible to believe that the lobbies of the 1920s apartment buildings in the Winthrop/Kenmore corridor used to be unlocked -- beautiful stucco walls and varnished woodwork, with lace curtains on the windows, a rug, lamps, and nice furniture -- tables and chairs and a sofa for guests to wait on.

Today, those same lobbies are stripped bare and locked tight -- and are still used as toilets by both sexes of street animals, who have not been driven off even by thirty years of "urban initiatives."

There used to be many manufacturers on Broadway. The area used to have lots of nice apartments, and great transportation for working people -- the Sheridan Road and Broadway buses, and the Thorndale "L" stop. Now, that is one of the stops the CTA is thinking about closing.

You can put up all the fences and lights and camera-bubbles you want on those poor, tired, tired old buildings, stand all the scowling, obnoxious Guardian Angels you can find on the corners, and inject all the fresh-faced Yuppies the place will hold -- and they will still be living cheek-by-jowl with some of the city's worst and wildest.

Is it any surprise that bicyclists don't want to use the "official bike lanes" the city has insanely laid out down Winthrop and Kenmore, and instead prefer to cycle in the light and air over on Sheridan Road, where they will not have vermin lunging at them from betweeen parked cars? City solution -- keep the vermin, ticket the cyclists.

There is the loveliest flower garden, with a gazebo and landscaping and chess tables, on the southeast corner of Thorndale and Sheridan. No elderly person from the neighborhood would even think of going there. It is merely an outdoor cocktail lounge where hulking teenage gangbangers take their ease in the sunlight, sipping at their 40-dogs and passing the odd blunt.

Multiple rapes and sickening murders and wild gun battles have happened before, and will happen again. Most of the "urban pioneers" keep safely to the west of Broadway. Their block-club-perfect street is the "Edgewater" they gush about. They prefer not to discuss what happens across the road.

I once lived over on the wrong side of that street. Thorndale and Winthrop, you suck. You and your sellers of phony joints and your blasters of huge radios and your underpass-loitering drunks and your attackers of old people and molesters of the young and demanders of a dollar make me puke -- to this day.

God protect the decent people there -- the working poor and the elderly barely hanging on, who cannot afford the large rent increase that always comes when you move.

I pray that they can get to and from the grocery store without being knocked down and mortally injured; I pray that no maniac will set their building ablaze in the middle of the night in an effort to exact revenge for an unpaid drug debt on someone who lives at the same number -- but over on the next street.

Amen.

OUT FUCKING STANDING!

A pity The Police couldn't put a hurt on these dogs before the double homicide.

Thanks to The Almighty that copper is ok.

While the public, the politicians and the media continue to harp about the so called "out of control, corrupt & brutal," "public servants" who refuse to bow, be humble, know their places and graciously accept being second class citizens because they're "nothing but cops."

The criminal underclass and the catered to constituents who aid and shelter them are hailed as the heroes in this town.

Heh...

We imagine the usual cabal of political and media elites (yeah, right) are chewing their tongues in outrage that there won't be an honors funeral at which they can grandstand and pretend to give a fuck for cameras and bright lights...

Funky-assed hypocrites and you know who you are!

"Tsk! For shame, another Police Officer..."

Oh STFU please! A bunch of enormous wagging tongues and not an iota of brains to keep them in check when nothing of consequence is actually being said.

Go slobber over the soon coming rev'run and alderfool "Cocked Hat Security & Public Safety" contractors. Alderfool Beale has "dibs" on that.

Heh heh...

So much hate for The Police but the frightened adult children seem not to have that much faith in the cherry picked bullshit j-fled has been spewing about how all is well, left is really right and his shoes aren't on the wrong feet after all.

Continue to keep public contact to a minimum. It reduces complaints and aggravation spent being on the business end of a complaint and other silliness. Police strictly by the numbers. Nothing is more important than going home to our families.

The public is making much noise about "Police need to take the streets back." Not without indemnification just like judges and prosecutors have.

Or if you really want change, put them on the hook for their "mishaps" just like coppers currently are.

Everybody reaps the risk or everybody reaps the reward...

Put an end to the current system of "hooray for me cuz I'm a feeb/judge/ccsao, fuck you cuz you're a Chicago Police Officer."

The Police are learning to be selfish and that's a good thing.

Protect yourselves, protect each other...

"Be polite. Be professional, but have a plan in mind to kill everyone you encounter should it become necessary."

The only thing keeping this city from descent into total chaos is The Thin Blue Line of the CPD. Weis' claim of less crime is a farce. When was the last time before yesterday afternoon did we have running gun battles through neighborhood streets with drug dealers? Things are getting worse not better. The bad guys have no qualms about shooting anybody including the police. Daley's gun laws are a joke. The only people with guns are the bad guys and the police, and the bad guys have more and better weapons. At the same time, the thoroughly dishonest politicians are trying to figure out how to take away police pensions and benefits. And now there is talk of neighborhoods hiring private security guards. Does aldercreature Beale really think a private security guard would face lethal force and engage the criminal element like the police did yesterday? If he does, he is in for a big surprise.
Yesterday the CPD proved its professionalism and competence in subduing brazen murderers who turned their guns on the police. One officer wounded. It is amazing that with the little respect given to the CPD by the media, politicians and many citizens, that there are still men and women willing to put their lives on the line to protect many of those who show them no respect. "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." Orwell. God Bless the CPD. Stay safe. Get well soon Officer.

Seriously, with all the feds around at the scene, this is one story where the whole truth will not come out for the citizens to know about their neighbors from the south operating here in Chicago.

Sure looks that way -- the local distributors were gonna pay the man next week, and he didn't like that.

"The man shot by police was identified as Arturo Ibarra, 37, of the 4500 block of South Troy Street."

Cops: Edgewater killing suspects part of 'crew' involved in drugs

By Tara Malone and Jeremy Gorner
Tribune reporters
2:55 p.m. CST, February 27, 2011

"Three men suspected in the fatal stabbing of two men in an Edgewater apartment were part of a "crew" that did business with drug cartels -- and may be responsible for several drug-related mass killings -- police disclosed today.

"The crew's suspected ringleader, Arturo Ibarra, 37, was shot and killed by police during a vehicle pursuit just after the two stabbing victims were discovered inside the fourth-floor apartment in the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, police said. The crew’s two other members were taken into police custody, awaiting criminal charges that had not been announced as of early Sunday afternoon.

"The two victims were found with their throats slit and a third man was found in the apartment critically injured. Police believe the victims and the assailants were conducting drug-related business when the slayings occurred.

"This is a crew of individuals we've been looking at for some time," Nick Roti, chief of Chicago police's organized crime division told reporters at a news conference today at police headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave.

"Police are also investigating whether the group was involved in several drug-related mass killings, including four men found dead inside a garage in the West Lawn neighborhood last September and three men found bound and gagged inside a car on the 2300 block of West 36th Street in the McKinley Park neighborhood last April, a different law enforcement source said.

"Roti did say the police department "suspected" the three men were involved in other homicides across the city..."

I like how the Chief of OCD is contradicted in the Suntimes
by another police source after he releases this in tribune:

The trio worked for a roofing company, but it's believed they also sold drugs, and even robbed and killed some of their customers, the source said.

The slayings were related to a drug operation that extends to Mexico.
Roti did say the police department "suspected" the three men were involved in other homicides across the city.
When asked for a possible motive behind the Saturday killings, Roti said the group "worked in the narcotics business" and had no problems killing people. Roti also called Ibarra a "bad guy."

Then Suntimes releases this:

“These are some of the most violent guys we’ve seen,” said the police source said, adding the men are not gang members and don’t appear to work for a drug cartel.

This "crew of individuals" b.s.

So on WGN radio this morning the same question arose that I posted here: Why are we calling these people a crew of individuals?

If they are working together it's a gang to me.

I'm not sure who it was talking on WGN this morning but they explained that they are not a gang because they did not have turf, a territory in which they restricted their activities to. That they were free to roam.

Ha, so it's all about territory now?

Well I guess since the street cops are territorial and work within a district that they are the ones that can be called a gang.

If a south-side or west-side gang member pulls a job on the north-side I suppose he will get elevated to the much more respected crew status!

We'll be reading how police gangs are chasing crews next.

This is like illegal immigrants becoming undocumented aliens and I take offense to both terms.

It comes off as an attempt to disassociate the negative connotation of the words while legitimizing the actions.

Crews, yeah crews represent hard work and altruistic values no? Gangs are associate with bad things and violence.

Go ahead, call 'em gang members and they'll sue you now. They're crew members.

In the near future don't be surprised when the headline come up that CPD "X" district gang members shot someone and we'll be trying to figure out who the bad guys are

Stop the "crew" b.s.
