Rahm Makes Nice With Firefighters

  • Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is making nice-nice to his former firemen foes.

Translation: Sneed is told Rahm, who is carrying an olive branch in his iron fist, paid a surprise visit to several North Side firehouses Thursday morning to assure firefighters (whose union voted not to endorse him) he wanted to save their pensions.

Pension check: “Rahm said he hated gambling, but he is in favor of a Chicago casino because it could be one way to shore up our pensions,” said a Chicago firefighter.

Backcheck: “He showed up unexpectedly at 9 a.m., drank a cup of coffee, and spent about 30 minutes assuring us of his intention because he saw firsthand what happened to the autoworkers’ pensions and he didn’t want that to happen to us.”

Well, let's get this done then Rahm. How about all revenues attached to a casino go to shoring up the city pensions until such time as the funds are at sustainable levels. In fact, how about the pensions get funded at some fixed rate of 120% percent or whatever it takes so it pays for itself - the actuaries can figure it out. No payouts to connected investors until the pensions reach that mark. That means no front companies connected to crooked politicians, no Roger Ebert, no Connie Payton, no Outfit nieces or nephews. In fact, if anyone in your "family" has appeared on any Chicago Crime Commission publication within the last four generations, you're out. Every dime goes to the funds.

Someone can tell us if this is possible - officers can then take their pension contribution (currently 9% and going to 12%) in their paychecks. We believe some well-funded pensions in non-bankrupt states did this a few years back.

This should get verrry interesting!

Beware. He didn't get his nickname "The Rahmfather" for nothing. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

This guy is a professional thug. When it comes to slick underhanded moves he will make Daley look like an overweight bouncer in a Wrigleyville bar.

Why be friends to the cops and firefighters now and suggest a casino? So they won't peep when he uses their pension fund money to build it!

Bottom line is that due to mismanagement, the poor economy or whatever you want to blame our pension woes on things need to change. Considering that our contributions have not gone up since the 70's its probably a given that they need to. If that is what it takes to ensure that we have a pension then so be it. the majority of society do not have a pension and in this economic climate other than fellow union memebers we will not get any sympathy if we lose our pensions.

I remember the first weeks of J-Fled's reign. Many people were in the camp of "Let's give him a chance." I never wanted to. Can't trust a Fed.

Here we are again.

However, I'll be willing to give Rahm some slack. We need to not to be at war with our Mayor. But he needs to fund that pension, buy any means necessary.

I REALLY hope he is just not blowing smoke up our asses....

On a Fox Newscast Rahm said he, “…will draw a salary but not a pension.” Does that mean he will not be a "City Pension?" He is in the U.S. Congressional pension fund and after one or one+ terms he gets a full pension. This might be then continued to be raised by whatever job he has in government later.

Nice when you can write your own rules and are a multimillionaire to boot.

Can some reporter find out what he is getting?

If he wants to do something for us, how about he gets on his cell phone, calls Obama and gets him to issue a full pardon to Bill Cozzi.

Is a small thing that would be a big F-U to Jody.

Rahm may get this done. He is already rich and somewhat intelligent (unlike Shanks). He wants to look like a problem solver so he can move on to bigger things like the White House. I doubt he wants to feed at the taxpayer buffet for three decades like RMD.

Just read this article, it stated that both the police and fire pension for the city of Detroit are 90% funded before the crash in 2008 they were both fully funded, this is a disgrace that detroit's pensions are funded better than Chicago's.

Civilian who loves pensions here...

Is it possible to overfund a pension so it pays for itself? Yes, but you'd probably need it 200% funded or more. I think a better question is why you'd want to do that. It would essentially put a huge burden on participants and taxpayers now, then future generations would enjoy the benefits without having to pay into the system. If you keep it 100% funded, taxpayers and participants keep paying their share at the same rate forever -- at least in theory.

Probably the best thing City Hall could do would be to merge some of the plans. I believe there are 7 city retirement plans (Police, Fire, Teachers, Muni, Laborers, Park District...maybe more). Each of these plans has trustees who need to be placated, office staff, service providers, etc. Cut the number of plans in half and you can cut operating expenses by 70%. It's never going to happen because the teacher trustees (as an example) operate with the sole interest of teachers in mind. If they suddenly had to share their plan with firefighters, firefighters and teachers would both be pissed.

One can dream though.

Not holding my breath that Rahm will do anything for the police. I didn't hear of Rahm visiting any police facilities during the campaign. So why would he do so now.

I hope Rahm's pre-election rhetoric was just that.
If any group of city employees know that they serve the tax payer it's police and fire. As for other city departments, well you know.

I'll keep an open mind about Rahm, but it's on a hair trigger to slam shut.

Yeah right. Sounds to me like the the pension shit was neglected to help ease the public outcry against a casino as a "save all" in Chicago when the time comes. This was probably the plan all along. Everything happens in Chicago for a reason. If it works fine....but the state lottery was supposed to be a "save all" for education funding, yet its still fucked up.

When's Rahm gonna make nice with us?

Some of his ideas for the department I like but most I don't. I like the fact that he wants to lose some of the chiefs and get more Indians. He mentioned that JFraud has created something like 8 new upper echelon positions while not hiring 1 beat cop.
The things I don't like are his plans to reduce our medical and replace bidded desk officers with cadets to get more beat cops. Those 2 moves would be prohibited under our current contract. If he really wants to obtain those 2 objectives he'll have to negotiate for those things in the next contract. Judging by the speed at which the city usually negotiates I'm guessing sometime in 2014. I don't see what the city could possibly give up in return to expect the FOP to budge on those 2 issues.
If we think our last contract was contentious it may seem like childs play in comparison to dealing with Rahmfather.
If he can find an economic engine or revenue stream(like a casino) to properly fund the pensions then he can make good on his word of preserving our pensions while not raising property taxes to do so.

If I were a member of a non police or non fire union I'd be more nervous about dealing with Rahmfather. I'm not a fearmonger but I can forsee Rahm threatening privatization or layoffs to attempt to coerce other unions to comply with his demands. I just don't realistically see him being able to effectively use those ploys with the police and fire unions.

I was amazed at the list of the highest pensions given by our pension fund. Would it help the funding if they had a rule that you could only be given a pension for your highest rank that you tested for. That would mean that since the postions from Captain on up are appointed they should not be pensionable. The list of the top 100 highest pensions includes all former bosses. the majority of those people like Phat Phil, are also working another career/job/pension. It's insane. It allows for someone who gets promoted, to earn, after just three years, a pension paying more than they made prior to that promotion. I understand that other pension funds are crazier, like the County and the Chicago Board of Education.

Think term limits too!!!
After two four year terms an alderperson will receive 80% of their, (part time?), salary as their pension. And they don't have the same minimal medical plan as the pissants that keep putting them into office!!!!!!!
Oh, and they can keep their election funds too.......

In Dallas, Texas we saw the mayor pushing hard to leave property taxes flat, but with the reduction in property values, no new increases meant less revenue. The other city leaders would not consider reducing services, so tax rates were increased. It’s left many Texans looking for alternate ways to pay their taxes with many looking at property tax loans which can be a great option for some.

We should NOT have to pay more into our pensions. We already pay nearly 10% from the moment we come on the job. Our taxes just went up and we are forced to live in the city. We do not get any breaks on paying for city services like water or park district programs. Our kids should get some preferential treatment when it comes to selective enrollment schools, because we are forced to live here, but they do not. We are held hostage here, we are told that if we do our time we will get this pension. We should not have this employment contract violated by having to pay more into it or by receiving a lesser benefit. Management has played games on their end, and on their end is where it should be fixed. They should not try to fix it by placing any of the load on our backs, it just is not right! We have born enough of the weight already. Quit pissing on us and telling us its raining. Enough is enough!

THERE IS A WAY AROUND GOLD BRAID PENSIONS!!!!!!!

Here is the idea:

Starting NOW all Command Staff will only make their non-exempt pay. Either lieutenant’s pay or Captains pay.

HOWEVER, everything above the Lts or Capts pay would be considered a "stipend" pay for doing the Commanders, Deputy Chief, Chief, ADS etc....

This "stipend" pay however is NOT pensionable. Therefore the tax payers are NOT on the hook for paying these insane "Gold Braid pensions"

This could work in ALL areas of government .. not only with City of Chicago Commissioners but also non-union positions where "bosses" are making LARGE paychecks which are pensionable. No more $300,000 pensions for these bastards.

If the "exempt" member does not like it.. he can quit and go back to his non-exempt position.

Please give feedback ..

fire away!!!

The Money' That is Generated From A Casino Would Soon Have To Go Back Into The Community To Shore Up The Issues, That Were, Caused By Gambling. The Market Here In The Mid West Is Already Over Saturated. Studies Have Been Made Saying That Conventions Like Coming To Chicago, because There Is NO GAMBLING In The Downtown Area. The Bottom Line Is The Money Generated From A Casino, and The Amount That Would Actually Go To Fund Pensions, On A Long Term Basis Would Be Little, if Any.

Perhaps you missed the news that, years ago, Quadafi admitted his involvement in that bombing. Duh.

NEW TOPIC!!!!!!

Daley LOVED the CFD too, they both hate the police. Its human nature

Old Man Daley did not love the Fire Department. He lovedand took care of his child-hood-grew-up-together-in-Bridgeport chum Commissioner Quinn. Quinn got away with a lot of shit that would have got other men canned on the spot.

On February 23, 2011, amidst the Libyan protests, Mustapha Abdel Jalil, former Libyan Justice Minister, alleged that he had proof that Libyan leader, Muammar al-Gaddafi, had personally ordered Abdelbaset al-Megrahi to carry the bomb on to flight 103............now is time forCIA to go in and eliminate those responsible in Lybia for the murders of all those who perished on that pan am flight

"...The Market Here In The Mid West Is Already Over Saturated.
WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER PLACE TO SPEND MONEY. WE NEED A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN EARN MONEY.

That is right.

No company wants to spend mega-thousands or a few million on a convention exhibit only to have most of the people they want to present it to spend all their time in a nearby casino.

Can you trust any Democrat with any operation that makes money? Daley and Rahm would skim the money into TIF funds and into the pockets of their friends.

"WE NEED A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN EARN MONEY." Daley has for years through regulations and taxes chased the almost all the manufacturing from candy to movies out of Chicago. This is so land developers can build miles of "luxury condos" for Section 8'ers in his Sanctuary City. Will it change under Rahm or will the new RAHM TAXES kill what little is left.

Spoken like a Blueshirt for Life. Not that there is anything wrong with that but if someone pays for a pension, in any grade they should get it. Remember what the Democrats did with the Social Security benefits we earned.

Why not make all Out of Grade Pay Pensionable. If P.O.s acting as F.T.O.s or Desk Sergeants, or any other upgrade got the Out of Grade "stipend" pensionable it would be better for the individual involved and would make the city do more promotions.

Please, NO! He's gone 13 years. I hope he is gone a lot more years. Better yet, I hope he stays gone forever. He might be home grown, but he is a bad apple!
