Aw Crap

  • A handcuffed pandhandler [sic] being transported by police pulled a concealed weapon and began shooting from the backseat of an unmarked squad car on Wednesday, causing the car to collide with another driver as the officers tried to protect themselves and gain control of the situation, authorities said.

The exchange of gunfire ended with one man dead and two officers injured.

"He found a good way to hide it [the gun]," a law enforcement source told NBC Chicago, noting that pandhandlers [sic] often "wear multiple layers of clothing."
Definitely one of those "Oh Shit!" moments we all pray to avoid. Thank god no one was seriously injured aside from the dead panhandler.

Thank God the officers are ok. We deal with so many shitbirds who wear multiple layers in the winter. Please be careful everyone. Don't hesitate to check again.

First, I am glad that both officers will be okay.

But....

I monday morning quarterback only because this is an incident that you CAN learn from.

This should have never happened, we need to be ever vigilant, and just go with the simple lesson Gus Terro taught way back in the day.

You search them for something as small as a cuff key before you put them in that car with you.

I have used that lesson for the last 18 years, not matter how cold, rainy, tired, not, windy, etc, etc I was. It has served me well.

Again, not bashing. Just hope that this serves as a wake up for all of us, we are only as strong as the weakest link in the fence, and we all can learn from this.

"Sarah Roskam, a student at the Moody Bible Institute, said she was in a nearby dormitory trying to take a nap when she heard what sounded like seven shots.
“That’s crazy. It seemed like a safe neighborhood, but it’s Chicago so nothing is really safe,” Roskam, 18, said."

Great quote from the story on chicago breaking news,,,,,

unrelated, but related, this proves my argument about pension reform. politicians and the citizenry all want to complain about how unfair it is that public employees get pensions, mainly speaking of police and fire, who are the primary examples. But I say is it fair that we go to work everyday with the chance of not returning home to our loved ones. was it fair that this 018th district officer got shot by scumbag who preys on society. was it fair that 2 fireman died fighting a fire set by the homeless. was it fair that Rick Francis was shot by a mental while working 99 on midnites because of manpower shortages. is it fair that countless other officers accross this city have been killed in recent years protecting and providing service to the citizens of Chicago. Is it fair that hundreds of officers are injured a year protecting and providing service to this city.
I'm not trying to createw an us against them attitude. but you show me just one private sector job that can compare to what policemen and firemen endure. We don't make a lucrative living, we don't live lavishly, we go to work, do our job full knowing shit might hit the fan today.
Politicians and citizens alike say we all need to have skin in the game. Well I will tell you that policemen and fireman have more than a little skin in the game, we have given the ultimate sacrifice for this city and the least this city could do is honor its commitment towards our pensions.

A speedy recovery in all respects to the officers involved.

There is no substitute for good "hands-on" police work and that includes searches. The sensitive fingers, the sense that something is not right and the willingness to probe a scumbag are invaluable survival tools.

But, with all the stuff we carry maybe we need one more item on the belt or maybe this could be worn like a wristwatch

Some of the equipment firms should design an affordable, miniature metal detector for in the field searches. I had one many years ago but it was crude and unreliable. Technology should be able to give us something we can carry to find metal weapons and even needles in field searches that would not be a big deal to carry.

Stay safe, This wouldn't be a substitute for that sixth sense that has kept many of us alive but it would be a valuable tool.

Remember, whenever you do something, do it all the way.

Working the wagon, I search ALL transports.
FYI...lockup keeper found .38 2" bbl. , called me and my Sgt. in, both chewed my 5 pound ass down to mere ounces, I still walk with a limp.
Hope this " war story " does somebody some good.

One of my very first days on the street as a recruit, we arrested a guy for theft who was fishing by a lagoon. FTO had me search the guy. When the wagon crew pulled up, I told them I had already searched him and they said they learned long ago not to let any prisoners into the wagon unless THEY did the prisoner search.

Moments later, the wagon guy had blood on his fingers from a fishing hook that Dude had in his pocket...

I was humiliated and swore that THAT would NEVER happen to me again. I spent my career on EVERY arrest, looking for the next hidden fish hook. I never found another one but found a lot of other crazy shit instead, and I and the others around me went home safe every time!

I had a friend, years ago, working on Madison st, the old skid row. He put a bum in the back seat of the car. The bum was cuffed in front. The bum had a razor blade in his wallet. He slashed the officer, who was in the front seat, with the blade across the officer's face. The officer shot and killed the bum. But, the officer had his face cut open and required plastic surgery. From that moment on, I always cuffed in the back and after placing the arrestee in the back seat, put the seat belt on him. The seat belt came after I was kicked in the back of the head. These officers got complacent and it almost cost them their lives or health. I have seen officers take the cuffs off of an arrestee at the lock-up door because they did not want to secure their weapons or go into the lockup. This practice resulted in way too many escape attempts, and in one case, shots fired in the station. I am retired now and not trying to second guess anyone. But , during my 35 years on the job I saw many things happen and had many close calls. You cannot be in a hurry, cut corners or lose your focus. I lived to retire, no serious injuiries and get a pension. I wish the same for all of you.

Thank God the po's are going to be ok. This is a wake up call against complacency. My partner and played out the scene when we heard the news. We've seen to many plain clothes teams placing uncuffed, not fully searched, offenders in back of their squads until their transport arrives, placing all po's involved in danger. We've seen po's roll their windows down on an suspicious person and placing themselves in jeopardy by being to close and in a position of disdvantage in case "crap" steps off. we become to comfortable, dealing with the same piss bums on the street, tact teams with the dpw's and panhandlers, to get off early and us old timers who know our beats so well we forget that previous non_violent offenders can turn on a dime. WTF! Bad guy or mental with a knife in the same room as you! That's as deadly a situation as you can get! If you think you can tase him, great, but have your partner cover you with a gun, just in case the taser doesn't work. The taser doesn't work 100%. Heck, sometimes it may take many, many rounds to bring down a mental or someone on PCP who has a knife. Just as long as WE go home safe! That is all that matters. All I'm sayin is God only knows where this shitbag was hiding the gun. Could have been up his ass (it happens, as we all know). Then, when IPRA gets complaints of guys doing a strip search on the street, in the middle of the day, in 018, the liberals would be calling for a public flogging of the officers.

Yes, we all have to do thorough searches and never assume that ANYONE is free of harmful weapons. However, let's not forget that we are human and we don't have x-ray vision. We do the best we can with what we have. Just never get complacent (not sayin that these particular officers did), and make sure there is always at least one set of eyes on your prisoners at all times.

We can all identify with this because we have all missed some form of contraband on a prisoner. And if you think you haven't, you just never found out about it.

Thank God the officers are ok.

NO ONE has a right to criticize anyone's tactics because they made a decision to draw their FIREARM on an ARMED SUBJECT. If the good Lt. feels confident with his Dept. issued yellow sextoy, so be it. Knives kill. A subject skilled in knife fighting can close the distance and do you in quickly. That's what my firearm is there for. In the situation described above, the taser is NOT the proper response.

The Tribune is really a piece of work. This is the shit they printed about the bum that almost killed one of our own yesterday:

"There were no violent offenses on Hardaman's criminal record, which dates back to 1990 and includes mostly petty offenses. His only felony conviction came in 1992 on an attempted robbery charge, for which he was sentenced to 3 years in prison."

Read that again, a felony conviction for Attempted robbery got him 3 years in prison and the Tribune reports that "There were no violent offenses on Hardaman's criminal record"

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY IS A VIOLENT OFFENSE!

And then there is the attempted murder of a police officer yesterday but that is trumped by the fact that he be kilt by the police. As he so richly deserved.

I wonder if the victim of that Attempted Robbery thinks it wasn't a violent offense.

What knucklehead goofs they have over at the Tribune! Not much longer now gang, I am almost out of here and I am just chomping at the bit. The piss bums, the horseshit media, the liberal fools that inhabit the city, the shitheads, there just isn't much of anything here worth going outside to see except to get out of town.

The last time I rode my bicycle along the lake a group of Cabrini shitheads had their hands all over it trying to pull me off, I had to fight the miserable mob jagoffs off and the yuppie hordes all around ignored everything. all of them weren't more than 13 or 14 but there were about a half dozen trying to get the bike. That was the end of bike riding along the lake. And that was on a warm day, crowded with people, all blind to everything except their own iPods.

Fuck this place. Arizona is looking mighty good.

That goofy Lt can have his Taser and I will take a knife and we'll start 25 feet apart and see who gets carved up.

Officers, do not listen to an obvious goof like that. his advice/orders will get someone killed. If it is him, OK, but not one of us, ignore that horseshit advice.

Never bring a Taser to a knife or gunfight. Bring a bigger gun, and friends with guns, and extra ammunition, and a backup gun.

The only help that idiot Lt might be would be to draw enemy fire and become an object lesson in how not to do it.

He could be on a plaque on the wall of a police station that PO's could walk past for many years and silently say to themselves, "what a fucking idiot."

Perfect post.

Been a while since I worked Yuppieville, but you couldn't do anything right there. The Libertards would call 911 on the "suspicious" person in their alley, then come out and question why you are harassing a minority. It's so crazy you think you are on "Punked" or something similar. They want the scary black man removed from their presence, but then feel guilty about it and have to become a nuisance.

Give me the ghetto any day! At least I can understand their nonsense!

This is the truth like it or not we need to all get on board realize who runs America while we are having a civil war, The big oil boys, drug manufacturers and insurance companies are who is running and ruining the US. Absolutely any event in the world causes gas to go up, even unrelated to oil. High gas prices, food prices, bad health care programs, bought-off & lazy politicians are riding on the backs of the working American who is struggling to feed their families, keep a home and pay taxes. Yet, those in office have their health care paid by the working American, their gas bills paid again by working Americans and no one cares or hears the working American. All of us should be doing everything we can to buy electric or hybrid cars within the next two years, and put big oil out of business. Let the middle East sit on their oil wells and spin. We all know the alternative energy technology is there, but wall street and their pals will do all they can to keep alternatives off the market as long as possible.
Until this changes we will never be free.

I have to say one thing, because I did it myself. When you work in slower district, you become complacent as I did. Then I went to a fast district and within days saw how complacent I became.

No way not true- I have worked though the city- shit happens- your trying to act like your above others because you work in a soooo called fast dist. Empty lots. little man there are no more fast dist. During the 1970 to 1990 yes not 2011 again empty lots.

First im glad all officers r ok. Most of these stinky bums shouldn't be locked up in the first place 001 and 018 tac are famous for bringing in bums for petty offenses daily. This includes many with lice aids and who knows what else. Is being able to wear jeans and a backwards baseball hat to work that important? If you grab a bad guy fine. But if you aren't even getting an RD number for your arrest does he really need to be locked up or are you just trying to keep your spot?

2/24/2011 06:07:00 PM

How about we move them to your front yard? You really want piss bums hanging all over your wife and kids breathing their tuberculosis flavored breathe while demanding a smoke or a dollar? Fuck them and fuck you. Lock all those pieces of shit up.

One other thing to cover, how many piss bums can afford a gun? Search the vehicles, at the beginning and end of your tour and after you have anyone in your vehicle. How often do we search the vehicle after a transport? You owe it to yourself, your fellow officers, and your families.

2/24/2011 08:34:00 PM

I seriously doubt this piss bum went into a gun store, pulled out his FOID and VISA cards and came back three days later to pick up his new purchase.

More likely he got it on the street in a burglary or had it when he was evicted from his family's residence.

This guy has very similar history to that woman who killed Rick Francis. History of violence toward his own family, they throw him out, family does nothing more to ensure his or public's safety, he takes violent actions toward police.

It was good he was put down without serious injury to the police.

Stop housing the piss bums and wait till the yuppies start howling for police service. then let a yuppie sign the complaint, make them a victim, get signed complaints or no arrest.

We are always wrong when we take police action. If it bothers the Yupsters let them be the complainant or else adios.

Anonymous complaints of panhandlers all should be 19-P, tell them to "knock it off" like jody did.

Lesson learned...

Search your prisoners as if you know he has a weapon secreted on him someplace. Search him again. Then have somebody else search him. The more eyes and fingers going across your prisoner the better. Do not feel slighted if somebody else searches you r prisoner and don't be reluctant to search aombody else's prisoner. This was the old Wagon Man's way of doing things 25 years ago.

Remember to be safe and back each other up. It seems at times like we are the only ones that really care about each other's safety sometimes. We are just a number to the bean counters and will be replaced anytime they see fit to hire newby's.

If you haven't done two or three good searches by the time you get to the lock up and put your gun away- you're an idiot and the type of idiot that if you had your gun in the lockup, would have it taken away from you.

If you have a new station, search the prisoner again in the sallyport before you lock up your guns.

Has anybody filed a safety grievence on the dept's policy of checking our duty weapons before we go in to process prisoners? What will happen when somebody misses a gun on a search there seeing none of the stations have the metal detectors required by G.O. Then you'll have a whole room full of police hostages

2/24/2011 11:41:00 AM<<<

Really....

I take it your DUTY weapon is that BIGGG pistola on your duty belt.

Not the hidden persuader under your vest or in your zippered cargo pants pocket.

Just don't do like some of these cowboys and carry a big flip-open machete right there in the open in the front pocket of your body armor. That is just asking for some doped-up shithead or group of shitheads to grab in a fight and thrust it into your jugular vein.

Also, as you probably know most body armor will probably not protect against a knife thrust.

Stay Safe, by all means carry a good knife, but keep it concealed.

But those downtown bustouts...they are a breed all their own

Actually no bums in my neighborhood since I dont live in the gold coast or downtown area. Plus all my family works and shops in the suburbs so they dont have to worry about any bums.

There is an easy way to solve this problem - piss bums, smelly dudes and those wearing vast layers of clothing. Every wagon should have a metal detector wand. After a hand search, use the wand and it wil determine what if any metals were missed. Why have the wand only in the lock-up? They should be on the street also. This dept is always boasting about technology but the simplest and easiest technological advances are never used.

Do you mean there is no need to check your ALL OF YOUR WEAPONS before you secure your prisoner to the wall.

By then you should have done at least one good search. Preferably more than one by more than one officer.

Bending over and cuffing a prisoner to the wall is one of the times you are most vunerable to a gun grab.

Like what was said in a previous post, (if I need to translate)

"Not the hidden persuader (.380 Auto, J Frame S&W or Colt Dick Spcl.) under your vest or in your zippered cargo pants pocket.

Just don't do like some of these cowboys and carry a big flip-open machete (LARGE CLIP-ON POCKET KNIFE)right there in the open in the front pocket of your body armor. That is just asking for some doped-up shithead or group of shitheads to grab in a fight and thrust it into your jugular vein."

Stay safe, be hard to kill.
