Vest Saves Cop

  • A person was killed and two Chicago police officers injured in a shooting in the River North neighborhood this afternoon, officials said.

At least one of the officers was shot and his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The other officer suffered cuts to his hand, fire officials said. The third person was dead on arrival at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Chicago police, citing preliminary reports, said the officer was arresting a panhandler when the officer was shot in the back. No other details were immediately available.

Best wishes to the wounded officers.

Pretty good work for public servants huh Rahm ?
I'm glad both officers will be ok. We've got to take care of each other because the public and Rahm sure won't look out for us. Politicians and the general public are quick to despise us yet without us where would they be? The Beast would've taken over already.
Rahm: Leave our salaries and pensions alone. Find a revenue source to properly fund our pensions and bail out your buddy Shortshanks from all his thievery being discovered. He (Shanks) is the biggest reason this city is in the pitiful shape that it's in.

Did the ballerino or Daley show up at the hospital, or make any comment?

Nah, I didn't think so

WGN News reporting now that offender was handcuffed behind his back, seated in back seat of CD car when he produced a handgun and fired on the officers, striking one in the shoulder. Officers reportedly returned fire, striking offender; back window of car was seen to be shattered. Witness reported that offender was removed from car, unhandcuffed and placed on gurney -- news report says he was taken to Northwestern Memorial "where he died a short time later."

Unclear if officers were seated in front seat of car or perhaps standing outside car -- it will come out.

Pretty good work? Shot by a cuffed suspect? Best wishes to the injured officers, but from initial reports "good work" is not how I'd characterize what happened here.

Search & search again. Just a panhandler? Not! Just like there is no such thing as a "routine traffic stop." Please take the time to protect yourself & your partner. Make a cage car show up for a transport even if it takes 8 hours for one to show up.

Not sure I agree with the pretty good work part from the previous poster but the incident does highlight the dangers police face on a daily basis.

Heal up officers. One of the officers was sixty......if rahm has it his way we will all be working till then before we collect a pension

Thank God. We've lost too many recently (of course, ONE is too many).

If this animal didn't shoot one of us, he would have - may ALREADY have - shot someone else. At least WE are prepared to deal with the threat.

This is the kind of shit you find everywhere in 018 now. Wilding and strong arming teens, aggressive and violent panhandlers, and violent mentals. If this guy would shoot at 2 policemen, what would he do to average citizens? Pretty soon all the businesses are going to leave and all the tax dollars will be gone. Good work by the officers. Thank God that they're OK.

Get well soon officers, nice work. Did Rahm show up at the hospital to remind the officers that they are public servants and don't deserve those sweet pensions? One less panhandling piece of sh*t downtown to deal with.

Dude was 56 and had a long sheet including robbery and decided to open fire on the arresting officers, but all we're going to hear about is how the cops could have acted differently.

Instead of second guessing and monday morning quarterbacking the coppers, why don't these fools ask why this animal decided to try and kill 2 cops who were doing their job?

And how did a bustout panhandler get his hands on a gun? From a burglary? Asshole did everything he could to get shot but only the cops are judged. Nobody ever holds these mutts accountable for their savage ways.

Outstanding job officers!! Now take the 3 days off for the shooting then make an appointment with EAP get counseling for a few weeks off on how upset you are that you had to take a law abiding link card carrying section 8 liveing citizens life. Take advantage of this situation for you and your partner. You know the city and new mayor won't take care of you. Oh and get well soon

First off, thank GOD that the officers are safe. Second, these guys, like so many other officers who were shot, never though that it would happen. Many officers still have the "FREE" level 2 vest that they got in the acadamy. Level 2 is a HUGE risk. Please get a level 2a or level 3 vest from a reputable manufacturer like Diamondback etc. I'm a range instructor, I see guys with the same "FREE" vest from 10...12...15 years ago. Guys and Gals, your children need you and saving $500 over your career is ridiculous.

"Cop Killers at Work"

That was the headline from one of Richard Davis' ads many, many years ago. He wasn't talking about armed offenders, but about politicians and cop brass talking to the media about body armor.

Richard Davis is the man who popularized soft body armor. He wasn't a cop. He was a Detroit pizza restaurant owner who was shot during a pizza delivery and through his efforts at Second Chance, soft body armor developed the popularity it has today.

The last several officers killed in the line of duty were shot in the head. Every time we mention body armor it tells the killers to shoot for the head.

Yes, most people know we wear body armor, but it's wrong to continually train them to shoot higher.

CPD needs to refuse to discuss one of our most important pieces of defensive equipment, particularly with the media. I heard reference to body armor on multiple media outlets, so someone from CPD must have released the information.

Finally it's BODY ARMOR, not a "safety vest".

Be Careful,

rb
