Shots Fired at the Police Again? (Nope)

  • Two men appeared in court today after a prosecutor said one of them opened fire on a Chicago police sergeant who wanted to question the pair about a robbery he suspected they had committed in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge James Brown set bond at $900,000 for Philip Cooper and $500,000 for Michael McCullum on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery in the early Friday chain of events.

  • Within minutes, an anonymous 911 call came in to police describing the robbers, and a police sergeant saw two men who fit the description in the 700 block of East 79th Street — about two blocks from the scene of the robbery, Creppel said.

As the sergeant, who was in uniform, approached the men, Cooper pulled out a gun and fired four shots, Creppel told Brown during the bond hearing.

The sergeant was unharmed and fired back twice, but both Cooper and McCullum ran away. Police arrested both men about five minutes later about a block away, Creppel said.
Ah, the Cook County justice system - still granting bail for attempted murder of police officers.

UPDATE: Evidently, this is the same incident as yesterday, but the point about granting bail to people who attempt to kill police officers stands.

no, your just double reporting. 700 block of 78th street is the same incident you wrote about yesterday about shots fired at 78th and cottage grove. It happened yesterday or the day before and they just hit court today. Same incident.

Seriously, they were let out on bail? How does this happen? Why are people OK with it? This is ridiculous to say the least.

The fact that these animals got any bond at all shows you how we're thought of in the criminal justice system. We're simply tools for the judges and lawyers.

What did you expect from a Crook County judge? Can't keep potential voters in jail.

Judge James Brown was assigned to grand central felony before being assigned to bond court and was not a fan of the Police. So much so that it was noticed by our members of FOP and he did not get an endorsement a few years for his re-election.

what kind of stupid people engage in a shootout with anyone and are found 5 minutes later down the street?

Anita Alverez has declared that shooting at the Police is now a misdemeanor. She is quoted as saying that 'if the felony charges were applied, there would be jail overcrowding and the inmates would be uncomfortable'. If the offender has proper IDs, an ANOV will be issued.

Bail was "set" by the judge, but bail was not "posted" by the defendants. That's the difference.
They're still in jail.

I do agree, however, that the judge should not have set a bail amount: NO BAIL FOR SUSPECTS WHO SHOOT AT POLICE OFFICERS!

"Ah, the Cook County justice system - still granting bail for attempted murder of police officers."

What we need is someone like Clyde Alexander Shelton from the movie "Law Abiding Citizen".

Clyde Shelton: [in court, laughing and clapping after judge grant bail, after his charade] Thank you.
Judge Laura Burch: Excuse me?
Clyde Shelton: No, I don't think I will excuse you. You see, this is what I'm talking about. You were about to let me go. Are you kidding me? This is why we're here in the first place. You think I don't remember who you are, lady?
Judge Laura Burch: I would tread carefully, Mr. Shelton.
Clyde Shelton: Well, how carefully should I tread? Because apparently I just killed two people, and you were about to let me walk right out that door! How MISGUIDED are you? I feed you a couple of bullshit legal precedents, and there you go - you jump on it like a bitch in heat. Folks, you all hang out...
Judge Laura Burch: [nervously starts pounding with gavel on a sounding block] I'm warning you, Mr. Shelton!
Clyde Shelton: ...in the same little club...
Judge Laura Burch: You will be held in contempt!
Clyde Shelton: ...and every day you let madmen and murderers back on the street. You're too busy treating the law...
Judge Laura Burch: [keeps pounding] One more time!
Clyde Shelton: ...like it's a fucking assembly line!
Judge Laura Burch: One more time.
Clyde Shelton: Do you have any idea what justice is?
Judge Laura Burch: You are now...
Clyde Shelton: Whatever happened to right and wrong?
Judge Laura Burch: ...in contempt of court.
Clyde Shelton: Whatever happened to right and wrong?
Judge Laura Burch: Remove this man.
Clyde Shelton: Whatever happened to the people?
Judge Laura Burch: Bail denied!
Clyde Shelton: Whatever happened to justice?
Judge Laura Burch: Bail denied!
Clyde Shelton: And I bet you take it up the fucking ass, bitch.
Judge Laura Burch: Bailiff!
Clyde Shelton: [to Nick Rice, as he's being dragged away in cuffs by policemen] Hey, see you later, Nick.

A $900,000 bond for the shooter and $500,000 for his accomplice is not a bond that either of these fools will be able to make. They are not going to come up with the 10% they will need to make bail. Judges rarely, if ever, order no bond unless there is a death or history of bond jumping or escape. There is a reason for this. The U.S. Supreme Court and the Illinois Supreme Court have ruled that since the defendant has not yet been convicted, the purpose of setting a bond is to ensure the defendant's appearance at his next court date. It is not to keep him incarcerated until the next court date. I know that sounds illogical but that is the law. It is enshrined in the 8th amendment to the U.S. Constitution: "Excessive bail shall not be required..." So, judges, as in this case, set high bonds but do not deny bond since they will likely be reversed by an appellate court. The judges to worry about are the one's who set I bonds or order electronic monitoring in a violent crime. Remember, Off. Flisk's murderer was wearing an EM ankle device from the Illinois parole board when he shot Off. Flisk and another person. Always have your gun with you off duty and stay safe. God Bless the CPD.

The way I see it is they set the bail because they know the fool doesn't have 90K cash up front to post, now if he was worth a shit to some one and did not want there dirty laundry aired, you'd see the rats running to the trap to get him bounced and before you know it he might have an accident before the court date. These type of charges with out a doubt should be a big fat ZERO no bail. Only in CC what a crock of shit.

Shortshanks, j-fled & the feds, the alderfools, the runnin' dog & dope money laundering rev'runs and the media are front and center of this madness.

Their campaign to diminish The Police in stature and demonize The Police as "out of control" and unworthy of support and goodwill has given the ghetto dogs implied consent to step up their attacks on The Police.

They cry the tears of a whore when The Police vigorously defend themselves...

"Wah! aren't The Police trained to exercise restraint? Didn't they know it was going to be like this when they signed up? If they don't like it they can quit! Thousands of people want their jobs! How dare you be proud and think highly of yourselves... Remember that you're servants. Stop complaining and thinking about retirement and fight some of this crime! So what if you're shorthanded! Do more with less and take these streets back!"

...Et Cetera. Ad Infinitum et Ad Nauseam.

The guilty parties have the blood of good POLICEMEN on their hands and they FEAR being held accountable for what has been happening.

We wish for them and all that is theirs to feel our pain since there appears to be no justice whatsoever for The Policeman.

The entire system has been games for their comfort and pleasure.

When they receive their pain and justice, they'll say "C'mon guys, you know it's all politics and bullshit right? You're still here, right? Why don't cha just let bygones be bygones and we'll call this misunderstanding even. You guys aren't really THAT mad are ya?"

We hope the "correction" will be you whores worst nightmare...
