"Concerned" About Concealed Carry?
This is a misleading article by the anti-gun people over at the Tribune:
- Chicago police joined gun control groups Wednesday to voice concerns about flaws in Illinois' mental health screening system for would-be gun owners, problems that could be amplified with passage of a bill to allow permits for carrying concealed firearms.
But evidently, the Tribune has neglected to mention the following organizations that have come out in favor of the Right to Carry in Illinois
Chicago Sgt's Association
Chicago Lt. Association
IL Association of Chiefs of Police
IL Sheriffs Association
The only people who seem to be against concealed carry are the exempts that Shortshanks sends down to Springfield - exempts who owe their continued employment as exempts to the political machine run by a midget who is protected 24/7 by armed guards. And who will continue to be protected by armed guards following his retirement from the public arena, despite the fact we've never seen a credible threat to his safety. At least Ed Burke had the foresight to publicize his threat from 30 years ago and managed to garner another more recent threat from a senile old man when Rahm made noises about removing his security detail.
Strangely absent from the above list - the Chicago FOP. Maybe it's about time the organization polled it's members and publicized where it stands, either with the citizens who know we're undermanned, who know we can't be everywhere at once and who are willing to help us out or with the political masters who don't trust citizens to be responsible for their own well being and less dependent on the government.
Forty-nine other states, just about every single one with a lower per capita rate of crime, can't be wrong. Illinois isn't unique except in it's desire to deny citizens the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Count my FOP vote for the Second Amendment and the people's right to carry not being infringed upon by a tyrant twirp like shortshanks.
To be fair, burke didn't want to make the last case a felony. It was the area one Hgs Lt who told burkes people he might want to reconsider if he wants to keep his security detail with rahm
He a great Lt for the area but that was clearly a move to get him noticed by Burke and just plain wrong.
We cannot afford to continue to pay for these Praetorian Guards.
Hey, crime is down right? That's what they keep trying to feed us!
We have a crystal ball unit that could predict if any of these leaders are going to be hurt.
Put up a pod camera on their front door like the people in the hood have watching them.
Don't worry, well catch the perps after the fact right? Why are these people so special? Why?
Looks like the Tribune is guilty of profiling eh? Or at least stereotyping.
It's a deterrent period. Some m**fr wants to rob a law abiding citizen, the m**fer needs to be taken out.
Thanks for the post!
The Libune seems to be little more than an outlet for press releases put out by certain groups.
Didn't they learn in J school to check sources?
Please call and write your congresscritters and ask for their support for HB148 which would make Illinois the last state to recongnize the basic Constitutional right to keep and >BEAR< arms.
Call the FOP and ask for thier support.
Be safe gentlemen.
I would think armed citizens = less work for the Police. Joe citizen pulls PM9 , social miscreant flees upon seeing the cute little 9mm pocket pistol. Simple concept ? No muss, no fuss, no paperwork to bog down a squad car.
I'm in the Sgt's Assn. And I was never "polled" to see where I stand?
I am a retired CPD after 35 years of service. I have made many UUW arrests . I too was against concealed carry. I hated the idea of standing in a public place and seeing that bulge under someone's shirt, never knowing if it was a cop or not ( most of the time you can tell by looks). But, I have slowly come to the belief that concealed carry for private citizens is the way to go. It has worked in other states and jurisdictions that have had it for years. The anti-gun people just use scary hypothetical stories and twist satistics to keep the law from passing. These scary possibilities that the anti-gunners always talk about have not come to pass in the states that allow their trained citizens to carry a concealed handgun. Citizens would need to be trained on how to use the handgun, how to keep it concealed to avoid undo alarm and what rights they have under the law to use the weapon. Daley mentioned that it would be terrifying to go to a public place and have a lot of people carrying guns. Well , I have news for the mayor, that is happening right now, although it is not legal and many of those carrying guns are criminals. If the scary stories of the anti-gunners were true, don't you think these states who allow concealed carry would revoke that law? But, instead they have expanded their concealed carry laws to allow for more protections. That should tell you something. While the alderman consider themselves " peace officers" who can carry handgunss and every elected official and many other well knowns such as a certain soutside priest demand armed drivers, the politicians deny citizens and retired law enforcement the right to carry a concealed weapon. One of the questions that should be asked of the new superintendnent is his feelings on retired law enforcement carrying weapons and if he will open the CPD ranges for the retired.Cline was a hyprocrit about the matter, but I bet he has his concealed card??
FOP should inform the membership with the DETAILS of the bill then take a survey or vote of the membership and either support it or not support i, but to sit on the fence and do nothing while law abiding citizens get attacked by criminals who are armed and dangerous is absurd. Think about the last time someone you knew was attacked by one of these savages, perhaps concealed carry might have been a deterrent lord knows the death penalty wont deter anyone.
48...wisconsin doesnt have it either
Remember, it is the State Representatives from Chicago and Cook County who will do their best to make sure that House Bill 148 will not pass
NOW is the time to call your State Rep and tell them to SUPPORT HB148....the vote is expected some time next week.
IF it passes (it has been reported that it is 1 to 2 votes short of the necessary 71)then its paralell bill in the Senate SB 82 will then be debated and voted upon.
What's my point? PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS NOW!!!!

Daley and Alvarez(who also vehemently opposes citizens defending themselves) should be smacked with a heavy leatherbound copy of "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine. Fucking demagogues.
The worst of the Daley stuff - I bet he gets to keep a security detail paid for by taxpayers after he's out of office. That's real bullshit.

Many exempts and others owe their careers to burke, no clue what to do but burkes clout transcends any skills!
Is that liable? They are saying "Chicago Police" when in fact there is no endorsement?
Well my vote is NO CARRY.
I got a call from my Rep. the other day the next vote on HB 148 will be in May.
It seems to me that it is mostly Crook county holding it back from being passed. Hopefully those in favor of HB 148 will get on the phone to there Reps. and try to persuade them to vote for this bill.
A FOP vote in favor sure would help.
I just met the Governator in D.C the other day at a shopping mall in Georgetown. He was alone with his son and without a security detail. Former governor of California and movie star and no security detail following him around wasting tax payer money. Why the fuck should the midget and Burke have one?

Both sites are fighting for CC here in Illinois.
The problem is that there are no state mental health institutions. Gone is the Dunning (Reed) Center and the one on the south side. These places helped the population who were mentally ill and homeless or mentally ill with addictions. Now they are everywhere or they are snuck in nursing homes system where they terrorize the elderly. Even familyb memeber are exhausted or unwilling to care for these timebombs. If the state and feds are going to do anything with my tax dollars, this issue should be re-addressed and taken care of. Nursing homes are not the solution.
What an absolutely ass-backwards state we live in. Don't those geniuses in Springfield and Chicago get it? The dirtbags that prey on law abiding citizens don't care if concealed carry is passed or not. Criminals make their living stealing from and harming others, and a handgun is the tool of their trade, so to speak. Keeping decent people from arming themselves only helps the criminals. It's about time to level the playing field and give respectful law abiding people the right to protect themselves. Especially those poor women who keep getting beat up in Oak Park, or Ms. McShane, the young woman who got her head beat in by some a-hole a year ago, and will never be mentally right again. Pass CCW NOW. This year.
"[Daley] will continue to be protected by armed guards following his retirement from the public arena..."
Fine with me, as long as he's using his vast wealth to buy his own Wackenhuts -- or his own AKM rifle "to stick up your butt," as he threatened on TV.

Yeah, taxpayers carrying guns is really a major problem. Assholes.
Mike Shields are you listening? Let's endorse concealed carry for citizens of Illinois. The FOP should be loud and vocal on this issue. At least put it to a vote of the membership.
Poll me my vote is I-I--I-I lets back this legeslation. When a person is issued a permit attach it to the a name check search. the I's have it
I joined the NRA, too!
Fuck Chicago and Mayor Daley, Anita Alvarex, and Rahm E.
The Police cannot protect its citizens anymore!
Just read fop presidents response what a pussy you are mr shields. You sound like the dummycrat i knew you would be.
Don't stray away from the prize SCC. FOP is about our pension, who cares if the public can carry guns. You over stepped on this one.
"I've always felt the law-abiding armed citizen and the police are natural allies."
-Massad Ayoob, Captain, Grantham (New Hampshire) Police Department, and internationally-known firearms and self-defense instructor
Why would we want FOP to take a stand on this issue? How about if we have Fop protect our pensions and collective bargaining rights? Lets get our priorities straight.
" It's just a matter of perception ", that was the Mayor -Elect commenting on crime in Chicago, per CH: 5 news WED. nite. He seems to think that the idea that Chicago is unsafe is only a matter on how you " perceive " it.
So, let me see...someone robbing you...its only in your mind...getting raped?...only because your thinking negatively ...getting your i-pod or other electronic device snatched while riding the CTA or getting killed while walking down from a CTA platform ...getting robbed while riding the bus...merchants getting thousands of dollars worth of merchandise stolen from roving bands of animals in broad daylight?
That ain't crime, Emmanuel says its only how you " perceive " it.
Ladies & gentleman, citizens of Illinois, protect yourselves by ANY MEANS NECESSARY, sadly we, the Police ,can't be everywhere everytime.
As the old saying goes, " better tried by 8 than carried by 6 "
Thanks for listening, now go practice your trigger pull.
It's strange that the only people opposed to guns are the only people protected by them...
Scum times running smut about gun owners being compared to holocaust victims... it's no a comparison libtards, it's a reminder that disarming the public was one of the first steps that the Nazis took before forcing the nation into taking part in their plans at gun point... gee... who had the guns and who didn't?
I wouldn't use your paper for my puppy to shit on...
I am still confused as to why FOID cards are allowed to invade my privacy, but having a DL which means that I have a cars, which means that I could injure or kill others, is considered private.
All i know is democrats in Illinois are against freedom for communist reasons of course.
Read Shields response, I am so glad I voted for Bella. God forbid the policemans union should stand by Joe citizen.
Go and look at and watch the latest video(headline) on the drudge report. Perfect example of why we need concealed carry. When are people going to have enough of these jagoffs
FOP gutless. Mike Shields you are a weasle. We are in trouble with you in charge.

send in the scoops!
begging you pardon but conceal carry is none of the fop's damn business. they have more important things to think about ....... like our f---ing pension!
why do you want an FOP vote? You got McCarthy without a vote? Voting is for democrats. FOP has balls.
I just did a quick look at HB 148 as it is posted now. (32 pages) It as I read it, is not going to be a easy permit to get.
If your on the fence about the bill please go read it.
We all know there will be people with clout or money that will get it witout testing.
The guy I took a NRA course from has gone to other people giving the gun course to see if they are doing what they are supposed to be teaching if they do not he turns them in. So even now some NRA members are policeing there own and thats a good thing.

I want my FOP protecting my contract and my pension and wages.
FOP is an organization that protects the contract rights of it's members.
No where in our contract or FOP by-laws does it say anything about concealed carry or 2nd amendment rights of civilians.
Join the NRA for that. Next you will want your church pastor to support concealed carry, and your doctor and grocer and cable company and auto mechanic.
Jeez, FOP has enough trouble with the powers that want to slash wages and our pension now. I want them watching my contract. Period.
Mike shields took the easy way out, sounds just like a politician, surprised he doesn't just vote present like the rest of the dumbacrats do when a bill/topic is to difficult for them to comprehend or take a stand on, well he wont get my vote
Why would we want FOP to take a stand on this issue? How about if we have Fop protect our pensions and collective bargaining rights? Lets get our priorities straight.
What would the trouble be to send out a poll to the membership to see where we stand? And if it goes the way I believe drop a press release and step up in defense of RKBA. grand total about a day's worth of work for a worker down at the hall. I am sure that one of the RKBA organizations would underwrite the expense of the poll.
Wouldn't take one iota away from defense of our pensions.
I don't want my union dues or my unions time wasted on anything except my benefits wages or other contractual issues.
Gee looks like Mikey handed out the BIG FAT preschool crayons by look of some of the comment.

Perhaps new Hair-Gel Mathematician fresh out of the Academy, or a Democrat. How many States do we have now ? obama says 57, I must have missed a few.
If you have heard about HR 218, that is the federal law that allows retired to carry and active to carry across state lines. What you have not heard is the fact police officers, both active and retired have been arrested without regard to this federal law. particulary NJ and NY. Carrying of hollow points, is a felony in NJ. You best be careful regarding this law, it is not universally recognized even after seven years.
"We need to stay focused on issues that really matter, not get dragged into a debate on whether civilians can arm themselves with concealed firearms. Chicago Police Officers already have that right." - Mike Shields FOP President.....
Guess what you elitist fuck.....your constituents have family members that do not share the privilege that they are afforded with their office.....did you ever think that they may wish for them to be able to protect themselves?
You were elected to represent the membership of the lodge.....take a poll and find out how the membership feels. I bet you'll be surprised
What about our 4th amendment rights?
Sure -- here's an Iphone and we'll even let you take it home for your personal use...who wants one?
No take it. No really..
Heh, we can track all the coppers that are bad apples. Just make carrying it mandatory with random phone call checks to make sure you have it on you.
Ya know, like a mandatory off duty radio check thing.

Mike Shields is right. The FOP doesn't have a dog in this fight. Our Pension is what we need to focus on, nothing else. Why get involved in this and alienate some of the politicians whose support we are going to need for our issues?

One has to assume that the democrats won't rule here forever and we may end up getting somebody like Wisconsin's Governor. And if he wants to get rid of collective bargaining, I can see Joe Citizen thinking, "the hell with them, where were they when I needed them?"

Like Madigan whom we have rubber stamped for years and now looks to be selling us out on our pension. Look my pension is important but the Constitution is sacred. If we ask soldiers to die to protect the Constitution we should be willing to sacrifice. We should now trust the same democrats who got us in this pension mess. Mike is very wrong on this issue.

If your on the fence about the bill please go read it.

Couple of things to keep in mind about the bill on the ILGA site.
1. It's not the bill that will be voted on. Some of the language has been tweaked at the request of the LE organizations that support the bill and some of the reps who plan to vote for it.
2. The Sheriff's are not the issuing authority, they're the entry point in the process. The ISP will be the issuing authority and final arbiter as to whether you get a permit after the background check comes back.
3. There is Must Inform language in the bill in the event of any LE contact a permit holder has. This was at the insistence of the Sheriff and Chief's Associations in the interest of officer safety.
It's not a perfect bill but it is a hell of a lot better than what we have now and most LE agencies outside Chicago support it.
Joe and Jane Citizen need a gun to protect against Wildings and Flash Mobs, period. Technology has enabled the beast to coordinate his atrocities quickly.
I can't wait for the first mom from Northbrook to smoke one of these little cocksuckers when he tries to fuck with her kids at Navy Pier or one of Shanks' other tourist traps.
Folks, I'm seeing a lot of comments to the effect that the FOP is a labor union and should concentrate on police pensions. That's fair enough, and I'm not mad atcha, but I want to give you a couple of things to think about. First of all, HB148 is going to pass without the FOP; it would be great to have their support, but we here all know--even those who registered their own individual votes against it here in comments--that at least a sizable majority of police officers favor RTC.
Secondly, there are several reasons why citizen RTC advocates would like to see the FOP testify in favor of RTC:
1. The FOP has not been apolitical on this issue in the past. It has been well-known for opposing gun rights in most forms and right-to-carry especially. If the FOP has had a change of heart and decided that it wants to stay out of the RTC debate, it should do what the ISP did: switch from "opposed" to "neutral" and indicate that stance publicly. If the FOP won't at least go neutral in public, then it's not staying out of anything or focusing on pensions--it's continuing in opposition to a basic civil right.
2. Right-to-carry laws ARE a work-related issue for police, especially in a place like Chicago. Police officers have done a better job of describing the benefits above than I can do here, but this is not some distant fight that doesn't involve CPD. Tired of citizens who blame you for not being everywhere at all times, but hate you for making the arrest when you get there? The people who are asking to be allowed to spend time and money proving themselves safe enough to be trusted with the means of their own defense in public are precisely the people who DO understand that you can't be everywhere or prevent everything. They're your natural allies.
3. Back when HR218 was working its way through the federal system, I was making calls, writing letters, and working for that bill. Some of my friends were scornful; they had the same Us vs. Them attitude as Mr. Shields. They told me I was wasting my time, because HR218 would mean that the cops would get their own carry permits, become an elite gun-toting class of citizen in Illinois and never lift a finger for RTC again, since "they'll have theirs."
Those people were wrong about the majority of police officers. I know because I talk to cops every day who tell me they support us, and now the leadership is catching up. Now comes Mr. Shields with the mirror-image argument, that cops got theirs a few years ago so now they should let everybody else flounder. He's as wrong as they were.
HB 148 Yes.
What is the procedure to recall a fop president I think we should be ready
I'm a 32 year veteran, retired two years ago,
I'm all for concealed carry in any other State that Illinois...
Do You REALLY BELIEVE that the politicians in this State would pass a bill that would be on the up and up, or would they allow themselves "special perks" by being allowed to "APPOINT" who gets the licenses?
I VOTE NO to giving these future felons we've elected any more power, especially in deeming who has the right to carry concealed.
The idiot Governor we elected is giving out clemency's like candy, If they're heavy enough to receive Clemency, the next step is concealed carry. We all know who this will benefit...
Pass this bill, and it gives these thieves something else to sell!
Leave the law as is until we can elect some politicians we can trust!!!
I found this mission statement on our website:
“We, the law enforcement officers of the United States and of the several states and political subdivisions thereof, as representatives and delegates of state and subordinate lodges, do hereby associate the several lodges we represent and the members thereof for the following purposes:
To support and defend the Constitution of the United States……….”
In case you haven’t read the Constitution, the Second Amendment states:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
According to your mission statement we pledge to uphold the Constitution, not parts of it, but all of it.
Is there something about the words “Keep and bear” you don’t understand?
Just type up a statement supporting HB148 and turn down off the background noise so you can continue to focus on the important stuff.
The idiot Governor we elected is giving out clemency's like candy,

Who's "we" sucker? I didn't vote for that asshole.
This idiot Governor isn't going to shed any tears when there is another round of layoffs, or another after that.
Did you forget all the cries of manpower shortage just a couple months ago? Is that fixed now?
Soon it will be just the "3 Amigos" working in Englewood by themselves, wishing Joe Public had their back That is until Smith and Wesson get laid off too. Then it's just you, Amigo.
These libtards without a clue will have the department disarmed next, armed with just a rubber nightstick. Get used to being called "Bobby".
FOP doesn't want a horse in the race, so they'll throw you under the bus on that one too.
I do want Shields to call a vote, or at least give a statement on the FOP's position...for, against, or neutral. Yes, this affects all of us.

Under HR218 you can carry them.....
News for the posters who think that carrying of hollow points in NJ is legal for retired police, I have read of two cases in which retired officers were arrested for this and charged with six felonies, one charge for each round. I belong to a blog of retired police officers and HR 218 was the big discussion for months. There are big problems in NJ and NY regarding this law and they can and do make arrests and then they consider HR 218 as an affirmative defense. There is nothing in the law that requires the states to follow this law. So, I can only tell you, be careful out there. Yes, you might be arrested. You probably will beat the case, but spending time in jail and spending cash for an attorney is no fun. If you doubt me, go on Linked-in and join the retired officers blog. Most of the officers in this blog are retired NY and NJ and they have big problems getting their concealed carry card.
Shields is not right. There would be no resources used if we just verbally champion our cause for concealled carry. We have a duty to protect the citizens of our state and city. In order to do that, our citizens deserve the right to protect themselves. Our own family deserves the right to protect themselves. I wouldn't give a damn about the money if I found out that one of my family members was hurt or killed because they couldn't protect themselves from a threat. All of the money in the world would not matter.
It is time for people to stop being so selfish and looking for what 'I' can benefit from. Stop worrying about using up political capital and start doing what is right.
Time to call a spade a spade. Do not buy into threats and scare tactics by politicians. We have a lot of power and a lot of respect from citizens outside of the ghettos. They would back our play and support us when we ask. I guarantee it.
"The problem is that there are no state mental health institutions. Gone is the Dunning (Reed) Center and the one on the south side. These places helped the population who were mentally ill and homeless or mentally ill with addictions. Now they are everywhere or they are snuck in nursing homes system where they terrorize the elderly. Even family memeber are exhausted or unwilling to care for these timebombs. If the state and feds are going to do anything with my tax dollars, this issue should be re-addressed and taken care of. Nursing homes are not the solution."

Reed is gone? Oh, no. Man, that was a regular wagon run...
...and as far as nursing homes, there was just an orchestrated screaming demonstration in the Daley Plaza by the "mentally ill" reading prepared press releases in clear, loud, sharp voices, getting every word perfect, DEMANDING to be taken out of nursing homes NOW and "put in community housing!"
I don't know what to say...
..except that we need the mental institutions back, very badly. This isn't fair to anyone.
"We need to stay focused on issues that really matter, not get dragged into a debate on whether civilians can arm themselves with concealed firearms. Chicago Police Officers already have that right." - Mike Shields FOP President.....
Thanks for expressing your "who gives a shit about the civilians - CPD already has that right" attitude.
I'll remember that the next time I get that phone call from the FOP asking for donations.
Why should we or the FOP get involved with this matter? We have enough stuff going on.
I say WE start publishing the names of journalists who carry fucking guns while they're running around the city. They all do but if you want, we can individually name them. They are chicken-shit pussies and expect YOU to go defenseless where they wouldn't step foot. The pen is not mightier than a .45 or the next politician to come down the pike.
Because maybe your father or your siter or the kid around the corner will be the next person taking one in the head and there won't be a cop or an eighty-five yr. old grandmother around to protect them. That's why. Serve and protect.
The closing of these last few mental hospitals will have a direct effect on first responders killed in the line of duty. and other innocents.
Call it what you want he's right. it is a labor union. I would love to see FOP work more closely with the CFD local for obvious reasons. The banter between Shields and SCC is always a good thing to have. But when nitwits hit below the belt from the sidelines without a point or hope of achieving anything except to embarrass, your just a pussy. Scc is a big boy or girl. We can all see he doesn't need anyone to kick the bully for him.
