Shutting Down a Beach?

  • Memorial Day’s unseasonably hot weather turned dangerous early Monday evening, forcing the closure of North Avenue Beach and sending four beach-goers to hospitals, one a young man in critical condition.

[...] In Chicago, police closed North Avenue Beach about 6 p.m., shortly after ambulances were summoned there to treat eight people who fell sick on the crowded lakefront spot, many complaining of illness related to the heat, said Larry Langford, director of the Chicago Fire Department Media Affairs.

“They started falling down and were light headed,” he said.

Firefighters responded and treated four beach-goers at the scene before taking four others to area hospitals. One, an 18-year-old man, was “found unresponsive” and he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Langford said.

North Avenue Beach looked like a bomb hit from what we saw on the news. Stories are trickling in about gang disturbances all over the place and no police response except "close the beach." It kind of makes one long for the days of Summer Mobile.

The beach was jammed packed. It's 95 degrees. People at the beach smoking weed, drinking , throwing up in the sand, passing out, fighting and stealing. About 10 cops assigned and thousands of people. Reports of 3,000 more teens headed to North Ave Beach.
The beach was closed and a good thing it was. It could have gotten really bad....

That sounded lame on TV (WGN). It wasn't THAT hot.

I watched and thought - Hmmmmm,, did the "wildings" move from Michigan Ave. to North Street beach for the day?

And the "yute" who was unresponsive, was that due to the heat or to too much alcohol consumption (plus the heat)?

I watched and thought - Well, this is the general "wake-up call to everyone (both police and non-police). Watch your back.

Whether you likes TRU and MSF or not, at least they were warm bodies to send when things started turning crazy. This was just a bunch of gangbangers who took over the beaches, groping bikini clad suburban girls, smoking blunts and acting like savages. They ended up calling the Area 3 task force to help them close the beach. Who is the Area 3 task force you ask? Well let me tell you. It's the Lt, sgts and PO's that were just dumped from MSF and TRU.
Great planning Gerry. Oh yea, the southside was shooting it up big time tonight too. Many many many calls of "give me more cars squad, there are 100, 200, 300 people out here throwing bottles. In one district the sgt had to get on the radio and say "squad, if there are no cars to respond pull all of my cars back and we are going to wait until you have more police to respond" I applaud that sgt.

It wasn't the heat that got the beach closed. Come on, it was only in the 80's, not exactly unusual weather in Chicago. Not to mention the fact that people go to the beach to cool down. The reason the beaches were closed was because of the out of control honor students/flash mobs. There were over 2,000 teenagers (being PC) who flocked to the beaches and proceeded to fight, attack others, rob, and destroy anything they could get their hands on. After the beaches were closed, these same "youths" went on to terrorize Michigan Ave., Millennium Park, and Navy Pier. All night long it was battery in progress, robbery in progress, assault in progress, etc. But of course we won't hear about any of that. I encourage all civilians to video record all instances that they see and post it on the internet. The stores and politicians aren't going to allow it to get out in the media. After all, we have to keep those tourists coming. They have no idea what they are walking into. Manpower of course was an issue. One 99 unit sent to stop hundreds of vehicles and foot traffic from entering the beach area. 99 units being sent alone to disperse mobs of 80-100 people on Michigan. Meanwhile, unrelated calls just kept stacking up putting 018 into a backlog. So there you go taxpayers, 500 officers "freed up" and not one of them was sent to your neighborhood.

i was at the lake front today and here is what I saw; A completely out of controll group of "teens" at the Oak St. Beach and at the Olive Park Beach. They were knocking people from their bikes at the Oak St. beach and then laughing and high-fiving each other. The nice northsiders were completly taken aback when the "teens" would push them from their bikes.

There were two CPD officers in the crowd, a tall african-american officer and a shorter white woman. She was yelling at the "teens" and telling them to leave the bike path. I think that she was as scared as I was. I saw the other officer trying to get a man from the crowd who was being beaten. He was trying to help the guy.

I think that the CPD was afraid that they were losing controll of the situation and so they closed the beaches.

I am not a policeman, but I very much support the police. I think that the new mayor and new CPD Chief should take off the gloves, and adopt a Guialini style policing model. I was sickened by what I saw this afternoon, and unfortunatly some event like this will soon be on YouTube. If some nice family from Omaha is filmed getting the crap beaten out of them at the beach it will have national repurcussions. I think that this sort of behavior has already affected parts of the city.

I was on a friend's boat yesterday and had a great view of both North ave and Oak st beaches from the lake. Both beaches were packed beyond all belief. While boating not to far from the shore I had never seen so many shitbirds, shitheads, thugs, and hoodlums in my life in 001st and 018th dist sides of the lakefront. When going back to the harbor we were not to far from where North Ave beach extends to its farthest point on the lake. Like most times several people were waving at the boats. This time four punks threw the Latin King sign at the boat. I have never seen that happen before.

I said to my wife and friends on the boat that I'm glad I work in the hood. The supposed nice parts of the city had more shitheads walking around than lawndale ever does.

Supt McCarthy is going to have to redeploy resources to 001, 018, and 023. The lakefront is going to be up for grabs.

ABC7 Team Coverage

May 30, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A steamy day at a packed North Avenue Beach ended with several people needing emergency treatment after becoming sick from the extreme heat.

Chicago police then stepped in and ordered everyone to leave, and North Avenue Beach was closed about an hour early.

GARY COP TICKET QUOTA: 1-Plus An Hour

Traffic cops in Gary are under orders to issue tickets more than once an hour.

... Commander Timothy Tatum says he issued the order requiring at least 10 citations a day from each officer assigned to the traffic division to increase productivity. He says the order will stand as long as he's commander.

Defense attorney Robert Harper says quotas help lawyers challenge tickets, because officers may write tickets just to keep their job.

The police began losing control of the city when Jane Byrne was voted out of office. Harold appointed Fred Rice, who really was not bad as the Supt. However there was always a feeling that if you got a real bad beef, one that ended up in Federal Court for instance, you had nobody watching your back. I know from my experience. When Daley took charge he completely emasculated what was left. It took years but he succeeded in ruining the finest police department in the country. A plague on his house.

The blame is not exactly with disbanding units that never used to be there in the past. It seems that people are forgetting that we have a city that created a hands-off department, where shitheads are not remotely concerned with police presence. We have a state that just abolished the death penalty, because it is compassionate to the worst criminals on earth. There are 4,000 less police in Chicago than when I was hired and we are forced to play with the hand we are dealt. Don't be too critical of things we as police can not control. Stand behind one another, and see it for what it is. Unfortunately, the city will realize you just can't turn the police "on and off" when you need it. Years of policy created by lawyers and (selective) oversight has weakened this department more in 15 years than the preceeding 100 years before it. Just do the best you can with what you have, and remember.. It's only a job

"Take off the gloves" you say? I think not. The people of the city of Chicago, the politicians, the lawyers (money grubbing scum) and the MB (code for make believe)Reverends, have OK'd the prosecution of police officers for that sort of behavior. Then they have allowed the animals to sue us to take everything from us and our families.
They batter us and shoot at us with impunity.
The politicians take tax payer money and give it to these same animals and say that it's cheaper to pay what they call a "nuisance suit" than to fight them. Now these mutts, that have never and will never work a day in their lives, that have never paid a dime in taxes, now know that all they have to do is call "Lovey and Lovey" and sue the city and the police officer and get $10,000 or so. That may not seem like a lot of money to you, but think about it, you don't pay for food, housing, medical, utilities and you sling dope on the corner and pull in $500.00 to $1,000.00 a day tax free and then screw the police officer and his family out of anything Lovey gets his hands on.

Sorry, I'm done playing.

So the animals came out of the savannas of Englewood and Lawndale, to hunt at dusk in the prime grounds of prey awaiting at North Avenue beach? Sounds more realistic than they closed the beach because it was hot.

I feel sorry for the law abiding and righteous citizens who are living among these misfits.

Check out Drudge Report's headlines: this happened across the country yesterday, but only Chicago media tried to cover it up.

Serious question that probably does not have an immediate answer: Are certain segments of society just becoming more emboldened and randomly doing the same thing in different cities, or is this just "social media" gone awry?

Interesting to see that in every case across the country, if race was described at all, the term "urban" was used.

Taste Of Chicago is going to be a bloodbath this year...

The city and the so called cpd bosses always dropped the ball every summer. The park has a limited amount of parking spaces. Once the park is filled, make public announcements on the radio/phone or post electronic signs, on the arterial street leading into the park, warning motorist of full lots. Then close the park to vehicle traffic, have them walk in, that way there is not deniel of entrance to a public space or park. On oak st and north ave beaches, there are 2or3 ways in, have a half day post, a day and afternoon teams of po's, to check coolers for alcohol, they need a permit, without a permit, beer, etc. are not allowed on park district property. Give them a choice, they can enter the park/beach, but not with the alcoholic beverages. PUBLIC SAFETY, is what is of the utmost concern. Enforce, the existing park and traffic ordinances early, not at 6pm. Citizens will alert friends etc. of the rules being enforced. This is a good way for the citizens to be part of the solution, no need to lament the 90day disbandment of msf or tru. Be safe. God bless the CPD and CFD.

It all starts with the parents, seeing as how most of these "honor roll" students have parents that are to busy getting high or drunk to teach them common decency. Most of these ghetto parents do not care about these kids enough to ask where they are and who they are with. The state needs to change the parental liability laws and rules governing welfare services.

If your underage child is arrested for committing a crime, a parent should be questioned as to what the parent was doing when their child committed the crime. If the parents response in anyway indicates negligence, ignorance, or just plain not caring about the child’s actions, then all welfare, section 8,and all other government aid should be reviewed and revoked if these parents are unable to control their children. Since most of these children end up in the juvenile detention center anyway; the state should take away any other children that are in a household where the parents can not keep control. Nothing will scare these ghetto parents more then loosing their free money and free housing.

For those of you who are reading this and feel that what I wrote is too aggressive and/or unfair to the juvenile offenders family. Remember that YOUR hard earned tax dollars are used to house and feed the same animals that will attack you just for the fun of it.

Even in the Sun-Times story, it trickles out...

"Several beach-goers said they saw a few fights and lots of people were drinking more than water and Coke to cool off.

"A bartender at Castaways, a bar and grill on North Avenue Beach, said she’d never seen the beach or the restaurant as busy as they were on Monday. She had to restock the bar six times; on her busiest day last year, she had to do it twice.

"Last year, the problems at start of the beach season involved warring gangs..."

Finish that sentence for yourself. "...and this year, things were so bad that the entire beach actually had to be closed down."

Anyhow, we need to quit bitching about what McCarthy has done. He has to dismantle the mess he was given and rebuild from there. If he was to create another city-wide unit first, where would these bodies come from? Patrol, that is where. This is all bad timing being the beginning of summer and all. Things are really bad.

And now we have this goof Obama going after city police departments.

Here's why we can't do a thing about these kids taking over our beaches and the downtown area...

In a marked shift from the Bush administration, President Obama's Justice Department is aggressively investigating several big urban police departments for systematic civil rights abuses such as harassment of racial minorities, false arrests, and excessive use of force.

In interviews, activists and attorneys on the ground in several cities where the DOJ has dispatched civil rights investigators welcomed the shift. To progressives disappointed by Eric Holder's Justice Department on key issues like the failure to investigate Bush-era torture and the prosecution of whistle-blowers, recent actions by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division are a bright spot.

Unfortunately, all the suburban and out-of-town white kids, have no idea what they are getting into when planning to travel to 85th and the Lake, for a concert. Middle of July, weekend, and in the center of the southside ghetto! Great planning! Who granted this permit? How much was the kick back in this permit issue? Was it worth the number of white kids who will be hurt, robbed, and/or killed during that weekend.

Traveling to and from after partying all day and night, right through the center of the worst area in the country.

I was enjoying myself along the Lakefront on my bike early Monday Morning. Things were nice, around 2:30 I stopped at the new concrete pilings along the Lake just North of Diversey Harbor. I sat there for a bit and read my book and listened to the radio for a few hours.

Around 4:00 I decided that it was time to find some dinner and continued south on the lake front path, because I thought that the eye candy at North Ave Beach would definitely be worth a look. What I did not anticipate was that the park district would have forgotten to brush the sand and mud out of the bike lane leaving the most busy area of the lake front path with only a few feet of viable biking space. This coupled with all the people made this decision to go have a look at the beach goers an unfortunate one.

By 4:20 I managed to make it past North Avenue Beach and to the Underpass of Lake Shore Drive behind the Chess Pavilion. I went under lake shore drive as I emerged I sighed some relief as I thought I was out of the the worst.

Boy was I wrong. I swear to god my first thought after coming into the Park behind the Chicago History Museum was, are they giving Link Card Bonuses for people who get to North Avenue Beach between 4 and 5. Honor Students walking 5 abreast acting like a menace, at one point they tried to push me off my bike. I got away and put off my dinner plans in order to make to REI before they closed and buy some Bear Mace.

I am not lucky enough to be a Cop. In hind sight I should have taken that career path, as I share your thoughts on most issues That others look at me as being a racist or asshole. Thanks to the emasculation of not only Law Enforcement, but the law abiding public as well, Bear Mace is the best I think I can do to protect myself and not stay confined at home.

I had to stop running during a two block stretch of the bike path between around Division and Oak streets. The bottleneck was caused by moronic black youths who were standing in the middle of the bike paths while goofin' and jivin'. I didn't see anyone on a bike get pushed, but it was probably only a matter of time until a runner or biker snapped at the black youths and received a pummeling at the hands of 15-20 black hoodlums at once. Closing the beach early was the right thing to do.

Mayor Coming Off As Liar -- Beach Story Spinning Out Of Control

Why was North Avenue Beach really closed?

WLS Radio's Monica DeSantis Reports

"CHICAGO (WLS) - Was it a flash mob that forced the closure of North Avenue beach on Memorial Day?

"Chicago Police News Affairs released a statement saying they had to close the beach for safety reasons, as people were suffering heat exhaustion and emergency vehicles couldn't get through to help.

"But, WLS listeners say there was what they called a "large gangbanger element" at the Oak Street and North Avenue beaches.

"Listeners report being at the beach, and seeing dozens of gang bangers pushing people off their bikes.

"Another listener says those causing havoc were not dressed for the beach and looked like "bad elements."

"...recently in Chicago, flash mobs have gathered along Michigan Avenue to do anything but entertain.

"In January, groups of teens assembled along Michigan Avenue and shoplifted at three separate stores. Eleven teens ranging in age from 14 to 17 were arrested.

"Chicago Police are denying that a flash mob intent on causing havoc forced the closure of the North Avenue beach on Memorial Day Monday."

"Growing Problem At Beaches" - County Commissioner

WGN TV just reported Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey's comments --

"There is a growing problem at the beaches, one that I believe that are trying to keep under wraps.

"Even more interesting is that the papers so quickly bought into the heat story without reporting any of the real problems that went down.

"And if the police can't get a handle on beach safety, there are going to be a lot of problems this summer

"Based on a couple of conversations that I've now had, yesterday's beach closure had more to do with crowd control concerns than the heat."

We grabbed 6, not 1 -- don't believe everything you read in the press. The guys on scene were ORDERED to clear the beach and AVOID making arrests. 1. conceal them well.

2. if you use them, be quick about it.

3. when you're done using them, conceal them well and exit the area.

4. remember that the saying, 'he who hesitates is lost' applies to every moment of your existence.

5. also remember to forget.

I'm not a cop, but for the last 10 years of my life I have been well-aware of the problem that these Scandinavian "youths" pose all around the country, especially when they congregate in numbers. My sympathies to any cop having to deal with this BS- do nothing, and you get what happened Memorial Day. Do your job and protect innocent people from these savages, and you'll face discipline and the divershitty tyrants.

Isn't Illinois the only remaining state in the country that doesn't allow people to conceal carry? A regular Joe has to be crazy or painfully naive to show up at the beach with his girlfriend or family and put himself at the mercy of the Scandinavian thugs.

I can't speak to the problems over the weekend, but I rode 15 miles down the bike path today on the north side.

I counted ten cops on bikes. Eight of whom were leisurely biking in one group and two who were talking to some 'yutes' near the North Avenue beachhouse.

Now I don't know which merit promotees run the lakefront bike patrols, but I suggest maybe you enforce a little common sense regarding the size of groups they bike in.

Same shit year after year. I bike miles and see no cops and then suddenly I see a large group coming toward me.

That had to be one of the better summer assignments so if the cops detailed don't want to space themselves properly I suggest a footpost at 115th and Michigan.

Asps might be considered as bludgeons and as such are a felony to carry in the state. O.C. is legal in Chicago as long as you don't use it inside. A knife of any length is legal at State level as long as you don't have intent to use it unlawfully, City Municipal code (misdemenor) says you can't carry a CONCEALED knife of greater than 2.5" Personally O.C. with a good knife as a last resort. That said, you really want to avoid trouble if possible. If not, a good O.C. like Fox labs used liberally and on any complaining liberals and then get the fuck out of there. The knife is a last choice and you got to be prepared I mean really ready to hurt somebody seriously,it aint like the movies, not necessarily a trait all of us have.

Anybody hear the rumor that Tiny Dancer 9.5 is going to use a parliamentary maneuver to circumvent the contracts and put the CPD back on 6 and 2s and 56 day rotating watches due to manpower and equipment shortages.
This is taking on a life of its own.

5/31/2011 11:53:00 AM

There is no "parlimentary" maneuver available to him to circumvent the contracts other than declaring an emergency condition exists in Chicago. Anything else is a losing lawsuit that will cost millions to repay in contract violations.

Any chance of the little runt having the balls to declare an emergency condition exists in Chicago has already left town because the only thing worse than telling the entire country that Chicago is out of control and a danger to anyone who lives here or visits here is formally declaring bankruptcy.

No, these rats will do whatever it takes to continue raking in the cash from the gullible public at all costs, and they have no intention of cutting their own white collar governmental criminal throats.

You'll just be blatantly aware that no media outlet will be allowed to print anything that alerts the rest of the country to the disaster that is Chicago. And that means NO publicly available outlet such as video media or print or online media where there is a known readership that could leave Chicago to the ghetto disaster that it's running towards.

Sure, you'll find the truth here and a few blogs, but that's not enough circulation to make the criminal scumbags worry.

Go f-ck yourself. Thousands of gangbangers on the beach that got so bad cpd needed to close the beach and you're worried about 8 bike cops riding together? I hope you aren't a cop, but my guess is you probably are and you are what's wrong with this department. Go crawl back underneath your desk and shut your mouth. Let the real police do their job.

He also said it is the responsibility of the police department to make the call, that the decision would be reviewed, but he saw no problem with it.

Had to laugh, though, when he said, it had nothing to do with any rioting and that gang activity was just a rumor.

Tried to jog tonight after work and ran into a flash mob at Oak Street beach. There was only three bicycle cops and one in a van. There was at least a hundred gangbangers. (not an exaggeration). I was planning on running to Lincoln Park but saw that the bike trail was completely overran by the mob. A couple of the gangbangers tried to knock a man off his bike in front of the cops and the cops just sat there. I turned around and considered myself lucky that I was only teased.
