A few readers asked about it and one of our commentators located the news report on the shooting incident:
The brother of the man charged in the death of the bodyguard for Chicago Bears lineman Terry "Tank" Johnson was charged Wednesday with trying to kill a Chicago police detective, police said.
Bobby Selvie, 22, is accused of attempted murder in the shooting of a police detective shortly before 1 a.m. Monday in the 800 block of West 50th Place in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Bobby Selvie's brother Michael, 34, was charged in December with killing Johnson's bodyguard at a Near North Side nightclub, according to sources.
Bobby Selvie, in a statement he allegedly made to another person, admitted shooting a Wentworth Area detective who was chasing a fellow gang member near the Selvies' home, sources said.
The detective, who was shot in the lower back, was reported in serious condition Wednesday. Investigators have been unable to question him.
The trial continues today in Room 606.

I have a question for a Chicago police officer. I am planning a visit to Chicago in August of this year and am worried. I may be moving to Chicago if things go right with my job interview. I want to live in Bucktown.
My cousin is a Chicago Fireman and told me to be careful and to read this website. I live in a very nice suburb of Dallas and see very little to no crime.
I want an honest answer is Chicago really that dangerous now? I have visited in the past and loved it. Is it safe for me to come? I am a 25 year old Christian chick who has been raised correctly and I have old fashioned values.
I was taught how to shoot a gun when I was 14 by my Father but I don't like guns and I don't like violence.
Please let me know the truth. I have been reading this blog for the last two weeks and it scares the hell out of me.
Why does this BARELY make the fuckin news??!!! I've been RDO and this is the first I'm hearing of it. WHAT. THE. FUCK??!!!
can we get a post with all info? as a future officer i would love to show some support for CPD. i have some time off and would glady give up my free time. first i read 0900, then 1000. i see its over on california and the new room is 606.
Redskin Pride Pat.
You ARE the Police.
There is a lot of things in life that can be taken away.
Pride is not one of them.
Same team blue, same team
I promise I will not vote for one single person currently
Working over at the fop. They r doing nothing for us. Not even reminding or posting important stuff like this or supporting the p.o. And his wife.
The website is never updated, the seniority bidding hasn't been updated since the third period.
R current fop really sucks bad.
It's like they're non existent.
God bless the detective. He's in my prayers.
And I pray the savage gets exactly what he deserves!
I want an honest answer is Chicago really that dangerous now?
It's worse than ever here. I wouldn't make the move. Crap weather, corruption.
And then you will get locked up for shotting some turd that trys to rob/rape you.
There are other jobs. If it scares the hell out of you, it should. Why leave paradise to live in a hell hole.
And I pray the savage gets exactly what he deserves!
And that will probably be a city job from one of the fake revrunds.
Feel better soon Det!
Info was late getting to FOP because I dropped the ball; furlough, dump, etc. I contacted Mike SHIELDS and Saul DEL RIVERO on Monday and they were able to get the information on the website in a timely manner based on when the information was given to them. The only person that needs to be blamed in all of this is the animal called Bobby SELVIE. Blame me for the delay in notifications, but this piece of shit is the reason Pat and his family are dealing with this.

Bucktown can be a fun neighborhood but make NO MISTAKE about this. It is not a safe suburb of Dallas. The predators are out there, especially if you look like a newbie. Late at night they prey upon females who walk along with their ipods on and their mind a million miles away. there have been numerous robbery and rape patterns in Bucktown. These happen when the sun goes down until the sun comes up.
If you take public transportation: Leave the phone, ipad, ipod, etc hidden. never have any valuables showing at all.
Five years ago there were 12,000 Chicago Police Officers. there are less than 10,000 now and they are heavy deployed in the wastelands that are the south and west sides of the city.
Establish residency and buy a gun. Or bring a gun with you. You have to register the gun and pass a class but you will have no problem there.
In the meantime carry pepper spray. Have it where it you can get to it, not in the bottom of a backpack.

Mam, you would be well advised to
remain where you are or to select
another city. By relocating here you would only be creating problems for yourself that you probably don't have now. Heed your
cousins advice. Our Chicago Police
Officers, Firemen, School Teachers,
and the rest of the residents are
being messed-over not only by the
city government but also those in the state government. BEWARE.
God bless you officer! Is that the same pos family that was moving into Mount Greenwood? All well known for same. Where is Charles Bronson when we need him?

dude, easy now! you arent very smart but we appreciate your passion. the news article is years old. the detective was shot a few years ago. the trial is starting now. relax, take a breath, and go to the trial if youre so outraged
How about the department email? My inbox is full of garbage from news affairs about how the sup will be on wgn, NBC, abc. Etc. This was the case with jfled and now is the case with mcnutty. Important news like this trial is what SHOULD be emailed to department members days in advance!!

Before she could tell Cecilia to put her cell phone away, another teen reached through the window and snatched it. Maria ran out after him. She was on the sidewalk, starting to scream "thief," she said, when someone from behind punched her in the jaw. She said she turned, jaw throbbing, to see the girl who had hit her standing with five other teens. "What are you going to do?" she said the girl who had punched her yelled. The teens were laughing, she said. "They were fearless. It seemed like they weren't taking anything serious." Maria ran into another restaurant and called 911.
"The detective, who was shot in the lower back"
Was the detective shot from behind or was the shooter facing him when he pulled the trigger?
Seems like a niggling detail (shot is shot) but I am curious. I'd assume from behind since the line was 'in the lower back' and not 'through the lower back'.
Hope he recovers from the shooting and heals fully.

Christian "chick"? I'm sorry, I have trouble imagining a woman of faith depicting herself as a "chick" but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this is a sincere post. Maybe at my age, I'm not hip to the TX slang.
But first, You are in Texas?
Stay there.
Make your life there. Texas is one of the few well managed states that serves it's citizen's well and doesn't fleece them.
If you're not otherwise aware, that's why almost half the jobs recently created in America were created in TX.
Seriously, think hard about staying in TX. When you're 50 something you'll have more of your hard earned $$ & you'll be glad you did. It's a matter of a few years IL and Chicago may very well financially implode and if it doesn't, it will only be because they are taxing the living heck out of those that can't leave.
That being said if you insist on comming here:
I'm not a cop, but as a native Chicagoian, I'll give you the same advice I'd give any young woman.
Don't get in to a garden (ground level) apartment. Ask the building you are thinking of living in if they have any Section 8 residents (Fed subsidized housing) in the building or area.
Check the area you are thinking of living in on a chicago crime map web sites (here's one) http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/
When you do find a likely place, check windows for easy access from outside (not good) and dead bolt locks on -- all -- doors and every night close accessable windows and dead bolt lock all your doors. Make sure building acces to common areas have locked entry ways and common areas are well lit.
When you walk the streets alone, day or night, be aware in a 360 degrees sphere around you who's around you in a 50 yard radious by casually looking around for someone who might be following you. Train yourself to assume you are being folllowed so your radar is always on and it becomes habit, second nature. Randomly change the direction you go, if you think you are being followed. Cross the street if you see 2 or more men or women; avoid people wearing hoodies or have there pants half way down there heiney.
Don't look down at your phone in public as you walk and don't have you ears plugged with earbuds.
Every city has it's bad areas. For the most part, in so called "good" areas of Chicago are OK but it is honestly not as safe as it once was for any number of reasons: Depleated and pussified police force because of democrat political agendas, bad economy/city finances, etc. I don't want to get flammed, so I want to be clear, Chicago cops aren't pussies, they are kept by management from giving the proper tune-ups/wood shampoos necessary to keep the animals in check.
Bucktown & Lakeviewi are nice areas as areas of people twenty-something years-old go. But, again, you have to be careful everywhere. Even where you are now.
I'm a white. 50-something year-old guy living in one if the few white trash buildings in one of the most affluent areas in the USA and I do all the things I have outlined above.
In the spirit you make your own luck, Good Luck!
Dear Christian Chick,
You can see for yourself and judge the crime here. This is the direct link to the Logan Square area.

Off Thursday, can anyone that knows post the court info for that day?

You're kidding, right? You want to leave Texas and move to Illinois!?!? Specifically, Chicago!?!?!?!?!?!? Stay away - stay very, very far away.
Again...These little Thugs are no longer afraid of the police. Think back 30 to 40 years ago you would be a walking dead man after doing something like that. No more. Our society has gone down hill and continues to do so. And I also think the first comment on this subject about Mr. Unk. citizen moving to Chicago is BS. Cops are not the only ones who read or write on this blog.
6/29/2011 12:12:00 AM
Why would anyone want to leave Texas? It has the fastest growing economy in the Union and has not experienced the current recession and will probably avoid the worse one that is coming soon.
Companies are fleeing or threatening to flee Illinois. Illinois has one of the largest emigration of it's population as seen in the last Census. Taxes are being raised at all levels and whatever money that you make will most likely go to pay for those citizens that do nothing.
Do not buy property here yet as it is still in free fall. Housing prices continue to plummet as more and more people go into foreclosure. In a couple of years you will be able to buy house just like they do in Detroit now.
As for crime, it is as bad as it's ever been. In 'ethnic'(I hate being politically correct but I don't want to offend.) neighborhoods, it is terrible, as bad or worse then third world nations. In middle class and upscale areas it is not that significant. It get's a lot of media and political attention when elements from the ethnic neighborhoods go in mass, because of the popular use of new technology, and terrorize the lakefront and downtown shopping areas.
If you desire to be a young urban pioneer, well then come on up here little lady but don't bring your guns. This is the only State that does not let you carry a gun in this country. I cannot tell you to come or not to come, that is your decision to make.
The grass is not greener on the other side.
bucktown has yuppies and scum, it is ok, artists love the area. I wouldnt live there.Try Roscoe Village area .......Better yet stay in Dallas
OT obama wants to allow the 20,000,000 illegals to stay in the USA how about deporting them all and allow 20,000,000 immigrants to enter the USA legally , you know the 20,000,000 that have applied to enter USA legally
That's fair and I don't think any citizen would have a problem with that
to the visitor, bring guns, 1- if you are going to live NW, 2- if you plan on living in bucktown, 3- if you are any further south, then add a gun for every 1.1 miles you move south.
CLOSING: Dear Christian, learn to love guns and keep your powder dry.
mcgruff force tactical , 06 cars and officers assigned to units to work a full tour of duty .
that would solve some of the back logs on the 2nd and 3rd watch
beat officers are only ones working a full tour , unfair
To the Dallas Chick,
Stay in Texas!
Chicago is too costly.
Chicago is a dangerous place if you let yourself become a victim.
Besides that, Texas is a great state for employment and y'all have concealed carry. No CC in Illinois.
The Dummycrats won't allow it.
Off Topic: Doty watch
A Monday morning 'emergency meeting" called by
Doty at the UCPD was held. All supervisors were
required to attend. Doty, with all the warmth of
a January snowstorm, had this to say: Regarding
the recent apparent suicide of a CPD officer who
had recently retired, Doty said that 'if you find
yourself no longer working in police work, just
go and find something else. Don't kill yourself.'
This, coming from a man who since the beginning
of this year, has now fired about 10 people who
used to work for the UCPD. This includes three
Lieutenants, two of who had been working for the
UCPD for over 60 years (combined). Doty 'laid them
off' last Friday, citing budgetary concerns. One
Lt. had been forced to take a position equivalent
to being a HALLWAY MONITOR in a public school.
Doty had the man posted in our lobby during the
hours of 1700 to 0500 hrs., when our lobby is completely locked down. WHY? It was widely known
that Doty did this in an attempt to catch this
respected supervisor either napping or away from
this unnecessary post while being videotaped
by lobby cameras. When neither of those scenarios developed, Doty took matters a step further, and laid him and another senior Lt. off last Friday.
Doty concluded this 'emergency meeting' by asking
the remaining supervisors if they had any gripes or suggestions. And even though Doty announced a little while back that a proposed promotional exam was being cancelled due to the budget, he announced at the meeting that the promotional exam is back to taking place as scheduled. One has to wonder, are things really being scaled back, or not? Or is Doty simply using the term 'budgetary concerns' to move out those who have been sitting on his personal shit list? Of course, no one dared speak during this meeting or offer any suggestions for turning things around for the better out of fear of attracting the evil eye of Doty. But Doty alone can't be blamed for what can only be called at this point a hostile work environment. Several people
employed by the UCPD are also to blame. Our chief, Marlon Lynch, is nothing more than a sniveling coward, much like your former Head of CPD appropriately named 'J-Fled.' Although Lynch is never around when the ax falls here (and it falls very frequently; Doty fired/laid off a secretary whose actual job WAS to sit in the lobby and field questions from citizens and students during business hours. She was fired Monday morning), Lynch is very much a part of this ugly scheme to eliminate jobs here. Another huge problem for us here at the UCPD is that Lynch's wife runs the Human Resources Dept., where job grievances are filed and even heard.
This is a serious conflict of interest that up until now the University has yet to acknowledge or resolve to the satisfaction of the officers here at the UCPD.
Another issue is that if the budget is in such arrears, why have so many civilians received promotions and raises recently? If we should be in a cost-savings mode, shouldn't everyone bite the bullet, or just those disliked by Doty?
Every copper in 009 knows the whole family, and has probably locked up a few of them.
stay in Texas
Just saw that this weekend will be in the mid 90's, keep safe CPD as the animals will most likely be gnashing their teeth, you have a supporter in this civilian
Dear Texas,
Come to Chicago but listen to your cousin on where not to go and about safety precautions. Best is if cousin acts as your tour guide. Enjoy yourself.
If you are walking around downtown and see a crowd of thug looking young black males coming toward you, head the other way. Stay off the CTA, don't carry lots of cash or wear expensive jewelry.
Did you say 25 year old Christian chick who was raised correctly and has old fashioned values? Well, if only I was 25 years younger I'd show you around myself.
Regards,
Old Police Guy

If I remember correctly, the detective was chasing a subject and ran alongside the Selvie house. The savage waited until he ran past and then shot him from behind allowing the wanted gut to get away. I may not be completely accurate, but I am close. They should fry that animal, but not in Illinois.

Neighborhoods like Bucktown, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, etc... are all good, decent, safe neighborhoods now. What happens in the future? That is the scary part. Our department is very shot of manpower. Thus the department in all of it's wisdom has decided to put more officers in "high crime neighborhoods". Neighborhoods in which citizens often make up false police calls. The most popular ones are "he has a gun", "shots are fired", "a woman is being raped right now", etc.... Thus the good/safe neighborhoods are really short of officers. So the criminal element has decided to come into those neighborhoods. So that is the big 64K question. If the city continues doing what it is doing now/not hiring more police officers. Then this city is toast. Even the safe neighborhoods won't be safe.
My best advice to you is to live in the suburbs. Besides crime, you will receive lots and lots of parking tickets and moving violations. Plus your property taxes are way too high. Even if you rent, that cost gets passed on to you. If I were in you, I would live in a decent suburb because most violent and property crime is caused by low income people.
TO 6/29/2011 08:56:00 AM;
He was shot in the back while chasing the Selvie that killed Tank Johnson's bodyguard through a gangway at night. Another family memeber was the shooter.
I tried to comment but I think it disallowed my post due to a technical error...
To the Dallas area "chick": my wife and I just moved here from the lily-white suburbs to the Lakeview area, bordering on Roscoe Village. We're not out late at night that often, and we also have a large K9-trained German Shepherd (which I believe serves to deter any criminals targeting us although some might disagree). If you're going to live alone, you should choose an upper-level floor and get a dog.
Chicago affords an excellent urban scene; it's cheaper and less dramatic than NYC and cleaner and nicer than LA. Use common sense and you will be fine. The taxes are higher than in Texas but it's too hot to live in in TX anyway (my mom was born in San Antonio). Good luck with your choice and hope that these comments were of use.
i have to know............what job could possibly be this important to make you leave dallas and come this this dump? \ not only is chicago a crumbling pile of garbage. this entire state is. i hope your ready for high gas prices, high taxes, over priced housing, corruption, robberies, attempted rapes, murders, gunfire etc this state and city are the complete opposite of texas.
whatever the job is, i hope its 500,000 k or above to come out here
with 1000's of officers short be prepared when something happens that they cant get there in time.

You tour is 9 hours dickhead not 8.5. You are not working a full tour either. Quit crying you fucking baby. Nobody is complaining about you taking 90 minutes for that selling narcotics job that you are not doing surveillance on.
No one has mentioned if the detective recovered from his wounds.
I can't go to the trial because I'm on days, but I'd go if I could.
So does anyone know how he's doing?

Two seperate responses.....1)Bucktown safe? Just ask the Irish girl that got her head bashed in with a baseball bat last year and will never be the same. 2)Beat officers never get a break from a full tour? Spare me. Cars get called in early, overlapping schedules and hard work is still rewarded. Go lock someone up.

STAY AWAY FROM CHICAGO, COOK COUNTY AND ILLINOIS. We have the highest taxes and Chicago Police are extremely undermanned. The politicians are all corrupt and self serving. we are the only state that does not allow concealed carry, so only the criminals are armed. The court system is a joke. If you are the victim of a crime, the offender will most likely get a slap on the wrist. this once beautiful city is not safe anywhere, including our beaches and downtown area. No cop on this site would tell you different. Every post about the high crime rates and how we are powerless to do anything because we are spread so thin is the honest truth. There is no fear of the police, so do you think you have a chance to protect youself outside your home while you are unarmed. Stay where you are or move to a safe city and state. Stay away from this hell hole.
To the Dallas Christian Chick, come to Chicago, you'll be fine.
Lakeview, Bucktown, all are fine. Most citizens of Chicago quickly learn where to avoid. At night, as I'm sure you already do in Dallas, make sure you use your street smarts, protect your valuables, walk with a purpose (don't look lost, even if you are), and be aware of who is around you. Crime that will affect you is usually random, so you must understand that it is a numbers game. If you don't want to be a victim, don't make yourself one. If you've been out drinking at the bar and you come out and the streets are deserted, call a cab. If you're walking and suddenly the neighborhood looks like it's gone to shit, turn around and retrace your steps.
Every city has crime. Every city also has safe, vibrant areas full of law-abiding people.
I worked in 009 in the late 90's. The Selvie's were always pieces of shit. Anybody who worked in 009 knew these assholes. Hope they hammer this fucking savage.
Dear Texas,
Afghanistan is about as dangerous as Chicago, but their taxes aren't as high.
To Texas 'Chick'
I'm not CPD (another agency), but lived near Bucktown. I moved to the burbs several years ago to get away from the city rats (youth)and keep my daughter from becoming another statistic. Like others have said the area's fine during the day but as night falls the thugs come out. Taxes are high here, and going to get worse to help the poorly managed budget and the winters are brutal. Plus get used to lesser qualified 'persons' moving up and becoming your boss, the State and City are known for pushing this agenda.
The city was fun at one time, but times have changed and the people in the know are bailing.
There are a few areas that are still ok , but you'd need to commute to get downtown.
Good luck.
Please keep posts going on the Selvie case. ISP here and would like to stop by 606 if and when we catch a break on the road.
In the mean time, we'll always try to be there for you guys.
mcgruff force tactical , 06 cars and officers assigned to units to work a full tour of duty .
that would solve some of the back logs on the 2nd and 3rd watch
beat officers are only ones working a full tour , unfair

Yeah but you don't do shit during the tour. Just drive aimless. Maybe if you showed some initiative and arrested someone maybe you could take a late lunch stroke. Maybe you should tell your dogs to stop having unavoidable traffic stops.
no one gives a fuck about the entire safety issue of radios not lasting the night here on CPD. Remember your best friend is the radio when you work 99. Sad, someone must get hurt before new radios are issued and anyone gives a shit.
related to basketball player jonnie selvie . shit family
Closing arguments begin at 0945 tomorrow Thursday June 30th. Room 606.
To the poster who might move here.
These crime here is no worse than any other big city. If you live in Bucktown you will love it.
There are bad areas, but don't let a bunch of hysterical tough guys posting anonymous rants deter you.
You'll learn where the bad areas are and will be fine.
There is great stuff on this site but there is a segment who's only idea of safe is living in Idaho I. An armed compound with Glen Beck and Sean Hannity. Don't let them scare you

the girl from texas, CRIME IS NOT CONTAINED, yes some areas are worse than others but its idiots like this that will brainwash you into thinking the world is a filled with giant lollipops and rainbows. the same one who sees teen murderers as "troubled, mis-guided youths"
you really have to be an ignorant moron to think crime is geographically contained.
so your the one who cries alongside with the momma crying about her honor student son getting shot by a rival gang, what is your dumbass doing on this site? save your liberal shit for some political blog with katie curic.
wait a second....... J-Fled is that you? oh you jokester you! ya almost got me!
either your him, or someone waiting to prey on this poor girl.
Focus PEOPLE........ Instead of debating Bucktown and the battery life of our radio's.............. Lets show them a SEA OF BLUE!!! 0900 hrs...... room 606........ BE THERE!
Tried to get in the room today at around 1030 and was told the room was too packed to let anyone else in, I hope that was the case
Re: Selvie Family. I wonder how many trees have been destroyed providing paper for Reisiting and Battery to a PO reports involving the Selvies. It always seemed like when one was involved 20 or so were also involved.
18:00. Jury is still out. About 15 people w/ the Johnson family in rm 606.

That is correct Comrade, things are just wonderful in the People's Democratic Republic of Chicago!!! We are just one goose step ahead of North Korea.
may Ohara and the cow live long lonely lives for defending the savage. Justice was not served today. When is firing a weapon at someone not attempting to murder them? answer: when the weapon is fired in Cook County. Let's give the officers the same treatment. CPD- it looks like Room 606 at 26th and cal just authorized warning shots!
