Mum's the Word

If you bad mouth Chicago, you might find yourself in this officer's shoes:
  • A veteran officer with a clean record is being investigated by the St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) after he warned the father of a robbery victim about a dangerous part of town.

Officer Thad "Stu" Crisco, who was recently in headlines for honoring his fallen partner David Crawford, allegedly warned St. Petersburg father Bob Esposito about letting his 16-year-old daughter hang around the Northshore Pool at night. Esposito's daughter was one of five teens robbed by a group of armed men there about 10:30 p.m. on a recent weeknight.

"I wouldn't come down here at night," Esposito said of the Northshore Pool area and Downtown, where he admits he used to loiter as a teen. "And I was told by one of the police officers not to come down here either."

That comment, made by Crisco the night of the robbery, was inadvertently relayed to his superior when Esposito was following up with SPPD. The department then launched an investigation into "disparaging comments against the city."

So stop warning people to stay away from the beaches and avoid downtown after dark. And certainly don't mention stay out of Englewood 24/7. Chicago is now the happiest place on earth with no crime and no heat. Rainbows and unicorns are the order of the day.

Officers threatened after Emily Good arrest
Rochester police officers involved in the arrest of activist Emily Good, who filmed a traffic stop and posted the video online, have had threats made against them
By PoliceOne Staff

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police officers involved in the arrest of Emily Good, the activist who filmed a traffic stop and posted her video online, have had threats made against them.

Good was charged with obstructing governmental administration while videotaping a traffic stop in front of her house on May 12. Prosecutors dropped the charge this week, citing lack of evidence.

The video and arrest prompted some criticism of the officers involved in message boards and social network sites, according to The Democrat and Chronicle.

Police officers are paying special attention to those officers' homes in fear of retaliation, Locust Club President Mike Mazzeo said during a news conference Thursday.

He said that least one arresting officer's home address was posted online. Local, state and federal officials are investigating and subpoenas and court orders for information have been issued, he said.

"There's been cellphone calls, there's drive-bys on residences — a vehicle drove by a residence and something was shouted out," Mazzeo said, prompting officers and their families to fear for their safety.

"Mrs. Good's message that has gone out to the public — that you have a right to question the actions of a police officer — is irresponsible and is a danger to the officers, the individual they are dealing with and any other bystanders," he said. "A simple street stop can turn deadly in seconds."

It's amazing how a police department will prosecute it's own members for the most trivial things and violate thier constitutional rights in an instant. If police departments went after criminals with the same enthusiasm, there would probably be a lot less crime. I hope this officer sues, of course, I imagine florida must have money to burn to do something so stupid. The constitution applies to everyone. Where's the ACLU now?

The Officer didn't do anything wrong, quite the contrary. Why do the Police issue community alerts regularly for crime problems in the first place? An irresponsible waste of tax dollars is about to occur and I hope the Chief there is required to cough up as well.

God bless and God help America

What's the difference between putting out a community or business alert or simply just giving a verbal warning to a citizen about a crime pattern or incident? Sounds like the officer was doing exactly what he was hired to do, offering a little crime prevention. The department might want to check how much money they have in their wallet.

Burglars Hit Mag Mile Louis Vuitton Store

A smash-and-grab break-in early this morning at the Magnificent Mile Louis Vuitton store netted several purses and other leather goods from the tony high-end retailer.

breaking/chi-burglars-hit-mag-mile-louis-vuitton-store-20110702,0,3164814.story

About 30 years ago, several similar smash-and-grabs prompted the North Michigan Avenue Retailers Association to place a call to the Mayor's office. The next day, a new 018th District, 1st watch detail was born known as the Michigan Avenue Detail. I believe it still exists, but has morphed into another district-wide tactical team. Betcha they get reeled back to Michigan Avenue, exclusively, after this one.

You're obviously a civilian, so you don't have a clue how funny your comment is.

This job DOES run most every aspect of our lives. It controls where we can and cannot live. It controls aspects of what and how much we can ingest re: alcohol and meds. Our conduct off duty can and often is called into question. Our choices of off-duty, part-time work are limited by the Department.

But thanks for the laugh. (And, one more thing; you telling police officers, who write a police blog, not to make it all about the job -- is ridiculous.)
