Cop Saves Baby

  • Chicago police Officer Christopher Elliott was getting ready to pull out of the gas station at Western and Diversey avenues Wednesday night when a man pounded on the window of his squad car, frantically yelling, "Baby, baby."

The man pointed to an unresponsive child in a van. Elliott rushed over, took the boy from the woman who was holding him and gently turned the child so he was facing away.

"He was just out of it, and he looked white and pale," Elliott said. "I began tapping it on the back and as I was tapping it the baby started to vomit out some food."

Elliott is being credited with saving the life of the choking infant, whose name he learned was Fernando.

Well done Officer.

Way to go Officer. And a note to the non PO readers here: this kind of thing happen all the time to the men and women that wear the uniform (OK firemen too).

When was the last time you mended a broken marriage, found a confused elderly and brought him home, comforted the relative of a recently departed, been randomly shot at just because you represent authority, pulled some one from a wreck or burning house, etc, etc.?

In know. We get paid to do it everyday. I just wanted to remind you we're not always giving you a ticket and punching female bartenders.

Tribune story today mentioned that when the officer was a child, someone saved him from choking in a similar manner. So he may be thinking, because such an action allowed him to grow up and be in a position to do some good, the same may be true for the child he saved. Great example of good actions going around and around.

Actually, personally, I'm not surprised by the timely life-saving actions of our brother member.

What got me was that the media actually went with the story.

I join my colleagues in simply saying Thank You for a job well done.
At least "OUR" acknowledgement is 'sincere.'

FYI: Elliott was in the Coast Guard, then went into the police academy and blew out his knee. He had to go back into the academy after his knee healed and became a cop. Elliott was a cop for a year or so before he took a leave of absence to work as a special education teacher in a suburban high school. Elliott didn't like it and came back on the force.

Good thing he did and a good thing he had the same experience as a youngster.

Great job officer.
Unfortunately , this stuff happens more than you think , without any attention. An officer does good things every day that no one knows about, other than the officer and the party involved. Kinda like pissing in a wet suit, makes you feel all warm inside, but no one else knows what you did.
Keep up the good work and go home safe.

Well done officer!

As an ordinary citizen, I'm here to say collectively we take you guys ... way ... way ... way ... too much for granted.

We get pissed off when you ticket us. We second guess your split second decisions which can mean your own life or death. We hugely undervalue how important you are, putting yourselves selflessly between us and the street animals of society (see WI State Fair).

And even as unappreciative as we are collectively, you're the first ones to bail out our dumb little asses when we get into trouble or need someone to save our kid's life -- no questions asked -- no thanks required.

Next ticket I get, I'm thanking a cop for his service.
There's a special place in heaven for your guys!
