Good News

  • Convicted felons found illegally carrying guns will now face automatic jail time under a measure Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law today.

The new law removes the option of probation for felons who are convicted of unlawful use or possession of a weapon, which will now result in two to 10 years behind bars. Jail time increases to three to 14 years for each additional violation or for felons who are caught with guns while on parole or supervised release.

The measure comes after the shooting death of Chicago Police Officer Thomas Wortham, who was killed outside his home during an attempted robbery last year. Some of suspects in his death had previously been convicted on gun charges.
This appears to be loosely based on Virginia's "Project Exile" where gun convictions led to lengthy sentences. Two years is better than probation, but now we wonder if the "shorties" are going to be packing the guns now, leading to more 13-year-old future brain surgeons getting shot.

The only reason that I could figure why they are waiting six months to enforce this new law is that they need time to turn out all the dope smokers to make room for them

Bring back the death penalty, clear and simple & an apology!

Am I asking too much?

The death penalty is more appropriate with the increasing amount of certainty based on forensic evidence-- mainly DNA, video recording, fingerprints, etc...
...let me stop myself right here.

Good news, yes.... but what does that translate to in a shitbird's mind?

Instead of tossing the gun on a garage roof, I'm gonna take my chances and shoot at the police-- I'm gonna go to jail either way!

Now, back to my campaign to bring back the death penalty...

What will likely happen is the States Attorneys Office will plead most cases down to a lesser charge to avoid the expense of a trial.

It's still another weapon in their arsenal, but I suspect it won't be directly used much. Maybe used as leverage for a quick plea and a shorter sentence.

Long overdue... Of course I wouldn't expect much in the way of enforcement in Crook County. Here, we travel to the beat of our own drum.

If they were going to enforce this, they're going to need more prison cells!

As everyone has known they will give the shorties the "weight" because they are charged as a juvi and won't talk. Something has to give on the shorties, to make it even more stringent where they can't skate either...... ~and then I woke up from a nice dream~ Lets hope this works in a better way to help everyone out!

Another worthless law. They can't even keep murderers in jail longer than ten years. I've run across a few which had been released on good behavior, or perhaps because of the over-crowding?
The death penalty is really needed. But bring back the electric chair or the hangman. Not this putting down the bad guy like an old dog.

This law sounds about right for firearm possession by a felon. Still, the one I'd really like to see would be firmer sentencing for any sort of agg batt or worse with a firearm. Pulling triggers as crimes should carry the weightiest sentences.

As you say, a good idea but not far enough. And it needs an incentive to not USE the weapon. So how about a structure like first possession (by a felon) = 3-5 years and NO parole, while firing the gun (even if you miss) = 50 years no parole? Second possession or firing = life.

Firing at ANY first responder, by anyone = life.

Firing at thugs = medal and cash reward.

No parole for violent offenders period would improve our city immensely, too.

Is this charge ANOTHER felony that will require approval from Felony Review? If so, I see it going NOWHERE... at least in Cook County! Denied, denied, denied!

Quinn probably already has the mechanism in place for early releases of all these mutts in the rest of the state, so that IDOC isn't needing more prison cells to house them all!

I agree with one additional caveat: Faced with a mandatory sentence, most liberal panty wetter judges will find them not guilty of the gun charge and guilty of a lesser offense so that they can give probation and get a campaign contribution from a reverend.

Seen it too many times to think the practice is an anamoly.

But the new law for felons with an illegal gun will take 5 months to become enforsable? SMDH

ONLY IN ILLINOIS

Sorry but I have no faith in any new law meaning anything.

I mean we have laws on the books regarding illegal immigration and instead of taking them off the books if they are deemed wrong we just ignore them right?

Then there's this push to do the exact same thing with the laws regarding marijuana. If they don't make sense get them off the books but no we want to ignore and pick and choose at will who they will apply to.

We have laws on frauds and racketeering and yet investment bankers that blew up the global economy with their frauds -- we don't see a single banker at the top in cuffs being prosecuted. They issued liar loans, lied about asset values, lied on foreclosure documents submitted to the courts making a mockery of the entire process. The world knows it and yet it goes on untouched...why? A few low level cases were brought and we get the plea of we're not going to admit or deny anything...here...here's a few bucks in chump change now leave us alone and they go back to doing the same thing. Robo-signing, credit default swaps, the whole nine yards.

So no, I'm sorry. Just a lot of hoopla like we are actually working on a problem. When the jails get packed to the rafters with gun felons we'll let them out like we're letting out the pot smokers because the city can't afford to keep them in.

This diversion over here to keep you from looking at the illegal immigrants coming across the borders over there endorsed by the president and carrying their Fast and Furious weapons that the ATF gave them.

Come on over amigo the governor has a scholarship program for you -- and the president has an entrepreneurship program for you too.

Even BETTER, the City Council wants city tax imposed on CHICAGOANS WHO RENT A CAR OUTSIDE CHICAGO. Are these people certifiably insane?

Here's part of it: "Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental — all of which are subsidiaries of Enterprise Holdings — are challenging a new law that requires a city tax to be charged on short-term rentals, only for Chicago residents who rent cars in the suburbs.

The suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court claims the Chicago Transaction Tax is illegal.

The tax in question was amended April 1, and says short-term car rental transactions that take place solely outside of Chicago are subjected to the tax and regulatory provisions for people with a Chicago city address on their Illinois driver’s license who rent outside of the city anywhere in the country, the suit said.

The rental companies can avoid the tax by proving the renter did not use the vehicle in the city, according to the suit."

Don't forget the new law requiring soccer goals to be firmly attached to the ground. Yes, it's a law. I can envision yuppie soccer moms demanding the law be enforced when they find a loose soccer goal.

It seems some years ago a goal tipped over and crushed a kid. Result: We need a new law prohibiting such things. But who get's arrested? Who gets the ANOV? We can't stop shitheads from killing each other but the legislature passes a law covering soccer goals. Wonderful.
