TMA Layoffs

  • Chicago's traffic aides, those uniformed people who try to keep city rush-hour traffic moving, may be facing mass layoffs to reduce spending.

The workers are staffed during special events, airports and downtown during rush hours.

They tell WGNTV they were in shock Monday when more than 70 full time traffic management employees were given notice that they're being laid off.
We heard about this fantastic new invention - the Traffic Signal. It's supposed to control traffic flow via a set of red, green and maybe yellow lights. We're really hoping it will catch on here in the States. It should free up dozens of police officers and enable Rahm to count them as "redeployed" to the streets.

This is some hilarious reporting though. "try to keep city rush-hour traffic moving"? Since when? We can't recall an intersection downtown that couldn't be completely gridlocked within one light-cycle by a TMA. If you ask most of them, all they do is watch the traffic signals and try to keep their hand-waving coordinated with the already predetermined timing - timing that's supposed to have been planned out by Traffic Engineers to keep downtown streets moving in an orderly fashion. TMA's are the answer to a problem that never existed - a human back-up for a computer system that replaced humans. Wow.

The only reason to have TMA's is if you need to override traffic signals, such as when moving a large crowd away from a congested venue (UC, Soldier Field, Sox Park, etc) onto surrounding arterial streets and expressways.

You want to keep downtown streets unclogged? Let the traffic signal do its job. Then have a traffic cop or two at the intersections with one of those automated ticket writers (one that seems to work more than 15% of the time) and a book of I-Bonds. Word will get around pretty quickly that blocking the intersection will cost you $75 and it'll stop within a month.

The 2011 Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Pomer Tournament is scheduled for Oct 12th at the Horseshoe Casino. This years tournament is very special because the Horshoe Casino is having a media day charity poker tournament to kick off the World Series of Poker Circuit Events that begin on Oct 13th, and has chosen the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation as the charity it will benefit. Since the Alex Valadez benefit, the Horseshoe Casino has been a huge supporter of the Chicago Police and for them to chose the Foundation to benefit this event continues to show their support. As a previous supporter stated the Memorial Foundation does a multitude of things for Police officers and their families, beyond just showing up with $50000 after a line of duty death. More information on this event will be forthcoming..

Obama Blames ATM Machines For High Unemployment Rates . . . Wait, Did He Say ATM Machines?

Yes, yes he did.

President Obama explained to NBC News that the reason companies aren’t hiring are not because of his policies, it’s because the economy is so automated. . . . “There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate. So all these things have created changes. . . .”

I was at O'Hare years ago. They had one PO who ran the thing and also handles jobs sometimes.
Everything ran smooth and the TCA s were happy and everybody got along.
Then Huberman changes things, added layers of managment, made the empoyees hate the job, and generally screwed thing up.
Also, theye were written up in a national magazine as being the worse dressed of any major city, and probable the least effective.
The people they have now are poorly traines, look shoddy and have very poor morale.
They should get rid of all these managers and bring them back ubder the police department where they could be trained and supervised.

Check out how many TMAs there are and how many supervisors for that number then how many "Superintendents" to oversee eveyone at really nice salaries.
Funny we have more employees and yet just one "Superintendent".
The TMA was just another cash cow for connected people to get their Daley money back and still look like they are "working at something"

The City has a budget shortfall of over 600 million for next year.

80% of the budget goes for employee salaries and benefits.

Rahm is starting with the smaller bargaining units but the real money savings will come from Police & Fire.

I hope that the bargaining units are preparing for the demands that are coming from City Hall but just whining and complaining is not a starter.

It is time for the blog to start identifing savings that will save jobs.
i.e. consolidating police stations, identifing exempt positions that can be eliminated, allowing inside positions to be civilanized, modifing medical roll practices, etc.
Anything that will reduce expenditures and increase revenues should be offered up quickly rather than losing jobs and pay.

I will never see the point of putting a "TMA" worker on an intersection to override the traffic signals (which they do, most of the time, not just when there's a large crowd/congested venue), attempt to get pedestrians injured or killed, and overall, just piss people off. My joke (though probably not a very good one) is that TMA stands for "too much attitude". These people are rude and useless. Sorry if I offended anyone, I didn't realize these people were police officers. Maybe they're pissed off because they'd rather be doing their actual job.

Better yet, place those RED LIGHT CAMERAS in the downtown areas! Plenty of red light runners, the city's coffers would be overflowing, and those cameras might just save the lives of a few pedestrians who are struck while crossing those downtown streets daily.
A good place to put on is by Petterino's restaurant; it's been struck by at least 3 speeding taxis in the past 18 months.

Long overdue. Just another remnant of Daley's patronage army of worthless parasites draining City coffers.

I live in Lincoln Park (CPD Beat 1814). Every time I drive through the intersections of Fullerton Pkwy. at both Stockton and Cannon Drives, even on summer weekdays at mid-day, I see 3 or 4 of these TMAs fucking up traffic flow at the intersections at your expense. Actually, you will usually find them sitting on park benches on the south side of Fullerton Pkwy. chatting, napping or reading their Sun-Times.

Hey, don't get me wrong. What Emanuel really has to eliminate are these suckass sinecures drawing six-figure salaries from the taxpayers. This most certainly includes the CPD "brass".

Note that I didn't even mention how they rob our pension fund upon retirement. Death to the "gold braid" bill.

If the truth be known (obviously with no support from local media), the ubercorrupt. teflon Richard M. Daley's twenty-two year patronage tenure is about the worst thing that happened to Chicago since the Great Fire.

J & G Sales of Prescott, AZ. has filed a lawsuit against ATF.
J & G Sales was asked by ATF to " cooperate " by allowing illegal gun purchases such as multiple and "straw " sales to take place with the approval & guarantee that ATF would " have their back's "
Without Congressional approval, ATF has now implemented a NATION wide requirement that any purchase of 1 firearm over a 22 day period will be reported to ATF w/ the name, address, serial number and type of firearm purchased.
When the story broke, Barry was asked who was responsible, Barry said he don't know, ask Holder.
Holder says, he don't know, I'll ask around.
A Congressional committee is now investigating, but being stonewalled by Holder.
I'm asking fellow NRA & ISRA members to give a phone call of support to J & G Sales @ 1-928-445-9650 for their help in supporting our 2nd Amendment right.
Thanks SCC for allowing me the use of you forum to get this message out.

TMA's were nothing but a political sop and favor for the rev'runs & alderfools to get some of their more challenged congregants & constituents on the city payroll to divert money from CPD & CFD as political payback... Of course.

Politics make for some queer and curious bed-fellows in this town.

Snatch the covers off to see who is bedded with whom and what benefit they derive.

Then use golf carts to chase & beat that naked ass around the Daley Center at high noon on Ch.9 with coat hangers, clothesline and slighty used fly-swatters until they feel highly motivated and refreshed enough to make the taxpayer whole for what they stole.

Heh... We can call it "Polo Of The Pissed Off & Pissed On Proletariat."

Whoop that funky ass, score a goal, win a stuffed animal and a t-shirt...

The captive, indentured servant taxpayers get first dibs.

Anal-whore media, make believe clergy, alderfools and the like are fair game.

Eliminating them as full timers and re-hiring as part-time will allow the city to cut their benefits.

Plus, why pay them for 8 hours if they're only being used for maybe 4 hours with a 3 hour gap in between, (like before and after a ballgame)?

When are we cutting the number of aldermen by at least 50% though?

The media attempts to distract us with stories of Trigger-Happy coppers was a nice attempt in creating a distraction...but it didn't work.

NYC doesn't have the number of aldermen we have.

Six figure paychecks and $70,000 dollar expense accounts are ridicules.

Not to mention the additional security expenses for drivers and body guards that the mayor tried to placate the public by hiring so-called retired cops to fill those positions.

Hey! Get real, why are we the taxpayers funding any of it?

Which brings us to point two!

Another month has passed and we're still paying for the ex-mayors security and drivers?

How much longer?

The city is busted Mr Mayor -- how much longer? We need first responders. Not clout positions. The taxpayers are not being served by protecting ex-city employees!

Let the Traffic Signal do its Job.

ROFLOMG!!! Where to start?

Vehicles that make Rolling Stops at stop signs.
Vehicles that don't Stop at Crosswalks unless the City does a Highly Advertised Crosswalk sting.
Cars that turn against the Light when No Turn signs are posted.
Pedestrians that don't know what a Don't Walk Sign Means
Cops from 001 and 018 that spend all day looking at Meters and Street Cleaning and don't assist TMA's.

Motor Vehicle Operators in this city are not afraid of Cops...because the Police don't actually Pull people over unless they are TOLD to by a White Shirt.

They also know that Traffic Aides have no Teeth....a Parking Ticket book doesn't scare anyone.

Its the ANOV book that is more effective...but thanks to the 2%'r attitude...this city isn't safe for anyone.

Cutting half the aldermen would be a $2.5 million dollar savings in wages alone. Add in their expense accounts and there's another $2 million. Shut down those ward offices and who known how many million will be saved there from light, gas, insurance, and maintenance.

Close down the remaining Ward offices and give the alderman a cubicle at the local police station so that they can "reach out" and stay in touch with their communities. Get a first hand account of what is going on in the hood. On days like today the alderman can go on tour with a hydrant wrench and free up the first responders being dispatched for open hydrants non-stop.

Should you not like the aldermen working in the police station then move their office to inside the local grocery store like the Jewels or Dominick's. You have banks inside there? Cut the energy cost. Close the ward offices. Cut the number of aldermen. The party time is OVER!

Than, a few years down the road 9.5 proclaims he will hire civilians to replace the cops placed on the corners.

Off topic:

I heard today that Doty had fired another Lt. from the UCPD because of a traffic accident which occurred while she was on duty. Is this true? Anybody have the 411 on this? I heard the reason was that the Lt.'s version didn't jibe with what a camera showed had occurred.

=================================

If that's Lt. CD, it's a damn shame. She's an outstanding boss.

The Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Hawks & the Bears can afford to pay for traffic control, whether they pay us or the traffic aides. That was how it was suppose to be, Daley thought otherwise. Still there's no talk about it. Wonder why....?
There has yet to be a solid, well worded jab at Daley for all he's done to make this City a financial ruin. So much for created jobs down the toilet, Any commentary from Quinn or birthday boy 'Bama ?
If the City was serious about saving money and cutting waste, HOW ABOUF LAYING OFF PART TIME ALDERMEN THAT SCURRY ABOUT TOWN OR OUT OF TOWN ON ALL SORTS OF NON-CITY BUSINESS.
But since The City chose to pink slip some folks who actually shown up for work in some of the worst conditions,
perhaps by laying off the "chronic" Light Duty scammers that hide out in Disctricts would help too.
Duty Availability is being able to function at full capacity, not just sitting in Review shuffling Supp Reports.
There's alot of slackers hiding inside and I dont mean the truly sick or injured.
And boy oh boy, I ALWAYS HATED TRAFFIC CONTROL TOO ! Guess who's coming to an intersection near you....

i worked many events w/ pos and tma's. Yeah there was/is a lot of dead wood. There were some really good workers also. There were many tma's I would have handled an event with rather then pos p.o.'s.
For many these days it is beneath them to direct traffic, write a ticket, back up a fellow officer, etc.

So all these things have created changes. . . .”

8/02/2011 09:56:00 AM

YES, THATS WHY THE COMMIE-IN-CHIEF wants to Tax EVERY banking transaction 1%, to further screw the American Taxpayer. Check snopes.com if you don't believe it. It's just another one of his hidden, dishonest devious scams on the Taxpayers, one of just many hidden by the false president with the "Transparent" Administration, and proceedings.

When you consider how many police cars drive by vehicles in Tow Zones or Bus Stops or on Hydrants, and How the police seem to only enjoy writing tickets for Rush Hour or Street Cleaning, and bitch and whine when PEA's get it done First...

As a PEA...I've seen a Cop write 3 rush Hour tickets on the same car in the same day....which is a Violation of Municipal Code. I've seen Cop Issued Tickets for No City Sticker (Park/Stand Code) and No City Sticker (Mover) with the same Time and Date. And I've seen Cops in Burkes ward write a car with no plates for No Front/Rear Plate FOR BOTH MISSING PLATES.

Tell me...did ya'll leave your brains at home when you put your uniforms on in the academy?

For the Police on the Job...

I have much respect for the Risks you face daily.

I just so happened to working Special in 001 this afternoon when many of them found out. They sep. the Part time TMA's from the FUll Timers...(Sep. rollcalls) The city is keeping the Part timers because they receive no Benefits. (Correct me if I'm wrong... Crossing Guards are Part time, and I thought they received benefits??)

While working this evening I saw at least two TMA's in the middle of the street acting like they are directing traffic...They were just following the Traffic Light Rotation... If they wanted to be useful and affective they would turn the lights off and manually push the traffic thru... That's what we have to do when the Lights stop working at a busy intersection in the dist. Push one direction until it cant take anymore than work the otherside.

Their job is like trying to Direct the Water Flow of the Chicago River! It does Not Need Any Help!

Better yet, place those RED LIGHT CAMERAS in the downtown areas! Plenty of red light runners, the city's coffers would be overflowing, and those cameras might just save the lives of a few pedestrians who are struck while crossing those downtown streets daily.

Simple solution, put the red light camera's at the intersections down town. After a few $100 tickets the cameras will stop the clowns that gridlock the intersection. Also, it will produce some extra money until the clowns adjust to the cameras. The TMA's sometimes tried to prevent the gridlock, but there is not much that can be done because everybody is so important and can now wait for the lights. So hit them in the pocket book, maybe they will then understand that they are not all important like they believe they are.

If your on duty in 018 during the afternoon I beg you to write more tickets . Cab drivers are out of control and use this city as their own playground
**********************************************************************
So you want the rare available beat car to enforce traffic on a afternnon in heavy traffic? Why? What about the numerous calls for suspicious person calls on Michigan Ave? The constant stream of service calls? I understand your frustration but sorry, the shortage of beat cars is a very hard issue to ignore. If I stop a cab driver, I will nail them but traffic stops and REVENUE for the city is a very low prioirty.

I'm on the List for the Academy thanks to a Lotto Number of 85 and taking the test in December 2010.

Second...I wish you all stay safe and go home to your families at the end of the day.

But I have to comment on this stupidity:

TMA Vest Say "Traffic Management"

Crossing guard vest say...you guessed it "Crossing Guard"

I'd presume that Northside could read....but maybe that's too big of a leap.

And reduce Revenue? LOL..

We had our merger already. Finance was merged INTO Revenue. Street Operations (home of the PEA's at Ashland/Diversey, 95th and Jefferies, State and Jefferson). got approved to Hire 5 more PEA's and 2 Booters.

We have a Ops Staff of PEAs Under 200. But I wrote almost 25k tickets in 2010 personally....so I think we can handle the light work ya'll don't want to actually do because it's "hard out there" or it's "a Democrap run shitty" or some other pathetic excuse to not do your 80k a year Job.

And yet......
Mayor Rahm Emanuel confirmed that the district is continuing the program during an appearance Tuesday with CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard to encourage back-to-school attendance. CPS officials would not say what other programming would be affected by the allocation of $10 million for Safe Passage. The district is scheduled to release its preliminary budget for the upcoming school year on Friday.

Richard M. Daley's twenty-two year patronage tenure is about the worst thing that happened to Chicago since the Great Fire.

Justice cries out that he should have been given a cell at Terre Haute over a decade ago.

The city had them buy those new shitty uniforms like the part timers who fuck up traffic. The old traffic aides know how direct traffic its the new ones that gum everything up

To Northside...

You're full of shit.

Crossing guards handle Cannon and Stockon. I work 019/018/023 as Revenue and know this for a fact.

TMA's only work up in Lincoln Park for Cubs or Air Show or Race to Wrigley or some special event like that.

8/02/2011 08:46:00 PM

Sit down John, I'll handle this one.

Dear Mr. Revenue,
First of all, get off this site. It's for the 'real' P-O-L-I-C-E, Troll.

Next, IF you actually knew 'Northside' you'd be ashamed (if possible) at telling a respected Homicide Dick and former CPD Sgt. of Police that he's "Full of Shit."

Now, I challenge you to go out and actually FIND those crossing guards that are (paid to) assigned to handle those crossings at 'Stockton,' Canon, Lincoln Park West and Clark Sts.

Don't work up a sweat Mr. Revenue, I'll give you a hint. All of them will be sitting in the shade, normally on a bench, for their entire tour around the zoo.
That's been the case for over 8-10 years in a row.
So in reality they're about as effective and needed as those TMA's.

Tell those (90%) of the useless, overweight, political appointees of the TMA, we've all seen your work (or lack thereof) and you won't be missed or needed.

Sorry, to those few of you that actually needed, and respected your job.

Now go and get your shine box and write some BS tickets OUTSIDE of the ghetto. And if you ever need help, don't call the Police because, Mr. Revenue, they're, 'full of shit!'

tru / msf gone and CPD is operational , civilian employees will replace many sworn officers in the future , review officer ,evidence technicians , commander secretaries , caps officers, it happened with sworn police dispatchers and loop traffic

8/02/2011 02:05:00 PM

So? What's your point. Everyone cried about putting cops back on the beat and that's what's happening.
Thing is the young guys now have nowhere to go in the future. If the other spots are civilianized then even fewer cops will get out of patrol.
Enjoy Kids.

Department of Revenue? Are you kidding me ? These a-holes think that they are the police. Some like to flash their badges and carry guns. Most of them are political hacks that do what they are told and are not very ethical people. These are the political jerks that go around and enforce the liquor laws in this town. There is nothing more corrupt then that. I say fire all of them and rehire them with the inspector general as their boss.

8/03/2011 08:59:00 AM

Carry a gun? Revenue employees?

I'm sorry...you must be thinking of IRS agents...because if you catch a City Employee that isn't with the Police Department carrying a Gun on the Job I want to suggest you ARREST them.

The Political Hacks are in the Management and Clerical Positions. Not working the streets in the Austin and Madison or 115th and Western or Uptown and Englewood neighborhoods

I never said Crossing guards weren't lazy clout babies.

I pointed out that Northside obviously can't Read at his advanced age.

This is your job. You should be glad you have one and do the work you are paid to do. If you don't do the work you are paid to do, you are a thief.

Now show this to your children and explain to them that you do your job, or you are a thief. It really is that simple.

O'Hare and Midway TMAs are the worst: rudely telling people to "move their ass" when they are stopped at the curb and actually picking up their passenger. What exactly is the point of an Arrivals zone if you can't even stop your car long enough to pick up your arriving passenger?

.The longer I am retired the more the posters on this blog piss me off. The motto should be, we rather curse the darkness, then light a candle.
i worked many events w/ pos and tma's. Yeah there was/is a lot of dead wood. There were some really good workers also. There were many tma's I would have handled an event with rather then pos p.o.'s.
For many these days it is beneath them to direct traffic, write a ticket, back up a fellow officer, etc.
Look how many of you "boast" on this blog, how little you do.
I'm just saying that some of these tma people showed up and gave their fellow workers an honest effort. How many of the cry babies on this blog can say that.

Amen I worked downtown on the 3rd of July for the fireworks. I must say that the TMA individuals on Illinois by the Dominicks did an outstanding job They kept the vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic moving very efficiently I can't speak as to the majority but this crew worked and earned every penny

What you fellow officers don't realize is that CTA Special is gone, and your new superintendant has made a deal for some kind of a new transit cop position, which will be run by his friend that he is bringing in from New York.

Not bad.... your own super has fucked you already, and none of you are the wiser. Now get out there and get those drinkers, parkers, movers and ANOV's.

I guess you can call that, the.. NEW YORK WAY!!!!

Remember St.Sabina...then know this... when a person shows you who they are the first time....believe them! "Be careful out there, and watch your backs!!"

Well I goota say, do you folksreally really think that coppers are or will do a better job then these TMA's, I remember seeing sworn officers directing traffic and screwing it up big time, so without TMA's then I guess coppers will be directing traffic on Boul Mich and in the loop.

Nobody cares you turd. Writing parking tickets is not our job, it's yours you fucking boner. We're here to enforce the laws, you were hired to help the city turn the TAX paying citizen upside down and shake for loose change. Your job is to be a fucking pimp and apparently you do it proudly. Congrats on writing 25k tickets a year and contributing nothing. Don't for a second YOU think you know how the police department works, because you don't. Hopefully you will reach your career zenith when you graduate the police academy and become the worlds biggest pimp, to both moving and parked vehicles.

I work at O'hare and am not a TMA. To the person who made the above comment, did you ever read the signs? There is no stopping, standing or parking. I have never seen any TMA or Police move anyone who was actually picking-up someone who is STANDING AT THE CURB. O'hare has 100's of flights a day ant there is no room for you to sit and wait for your passenger to walk the half mile from the far gates. That is why the City has a FREE cellphone lot. But wait, you are to important to use it.....

Well I agree with the first poster about this b.s. I had to pick up a family member from Midway. As I pulled up the person I was picking up wasn't outside waiting, so I did what was expected I circled around and came back. I did this 6 times until my family member was at curbside waiting with 1 bag. I pulled over to pick her up and the fat, lazy rude person told me to move. I replied I'm picking this person up. What would you like me to do, open the door and pass by at 10 mph and have her jump in. Well the person wrote my plate number on her hand and guess what I received a ticket in the mail. I guess you aren't allowed to pick up passengers at the airport without the risk of a ticket!!!!

Feds: City Of Joliet Is Displacing African-American Residents
August 5, 2011 5:36 AM

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) — The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the City of Joliet, alleging it is violating fair housing laws by moving to condemn a 1960s era federally-subsidized affordable housing development

-------

Where was the federal lawsuit when Daley demolished all of the projects and sent the denizens to the suburbs with vouchers and section 8?
