More Layoffs

Our own opinion was, and remains, if someone wants to sleep on the streets, let 'em:
  • Homeless Chicagoans living on the streets, in parks and beneath bridges and viaducts could be forced to fend for themselves overnight, thanks to a $2.4 million state funding cut that’s triggering 24 layoffs.

All but a handful of the employees targeted for layoffs, beginning Sept.1, work the midnight-to-8 a.m. shift for the city’s Department of Family and Support Services.

They pick up homeless residents and transport them to overnight shelters. If they see somebody living on the street — oftentimes suffering from alcohol, substance abuse and mental health problems — they get out of the van, attempt to talk them into going to a shelter and take them there.

Now, the overnight shift is being eliminated as Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration struggles to absorb a 49 percent cut in state funding for homeless programs in the new fiscal year that began July 1.

Now let's get them out of our lobbies along with the disease, smell and bugs they bring along.

Fuck them. the lazy assholes would never pick anyone up instead they would sleep in their vans all night. They get what they had coming to them for making me smell all those rotten corpse smelling like bums sleeping in the stations all of these years!

I thought they were already laid off based on the response we get when we call them to pick up the people who come into the station requesting. If we call by 2200 there is only a 50% chance that they will get there by 0500. Then when they would show up, hey would try and talk the person out of going to the shelter. They will not be missed.

We don't have $2.4 million for the homeless but we have $11 million for Burke's security detail right?

The Fox news story I don't think is even counting the cost of vehicles and expenses..that $11 million is just wages isn't it?

I don't care if he's been cut to retired cops doing security. Why are the taxpayers providing ANY security?

If Burke was paying for it out of his own pocket or forced to use his $70,000 dollar expense account I'll bet we wouldn't have people doing it with six figure wages and working enough overtime to justify two more full time guards.

Should we let this continue it sets the stage for the 49 other aldermen to ask "where's mine" I need drivers and security too.

Nip it. It's been going on long enough. Nip it.

I agree completely about not allowing homeless vagrants sleeping or just hanging out in the districts, not only for the health reasons but for safety as well. Police stations should be secured facilities.

However, I don't agree with laying off the midnight crew that helped homeless people find shelter.

Where did humanity and decency go? Are we that far gone as human beings that we give up on trying to help people who clearly can't help themeselves for whatever the reason be it drinking, drugs, mental disease, etc.

I'm so disgusted with this city and this just adds to it!

I work in an area building and the homeless by us are truly needing. They literally sleep in the bushes across the street, even in the winter. This was what the safety nets were designed for. Not generations of lazy breeders. I have no sympathy for the midnight crew of Human Services. Maybe now the day and afternoon crew will start moving their asses and start responding when we make the call for these persons and families.

Another gift from "King Daley!" Rahm is just beginning to open the "real books" and will now understand why most people wonder why Daley hasn't been INDICTED! More "lapping" at Sox park last night for Mayor Mumbles. I fear a "crown" is being designed as we speak!

In many areas the homeless dwell in vacant or foreclosed homes. Many of these still have electricity. Some for over a year. Don't pay your electric bill and see how fast they cut you off.

Somehow I gotta say that if we're trying to talk people into using services we're going to far. Sure, inform them. But begging and wheedling them to do what they ought to do anyway is intruding too far into people's lives.

Dept of Human Service is a joke, the workers that eventually show up at districts look worse than the indigents, and usually refuse service. But this is another attempt by Rahm to decrease the size of government in order to keep ShortShanks and Burke protected. The money saved in one department gets moved over to another.
The bodyguard details will to fight through traffic and the homeless will continue to sleep and beg on the street.
They lay off the workers and keep the managers earning 6 figures.
They can't fire 54 firefighters for cheating on timesheets because too many clouted supervisors were allowing this to happen.
So, in Rahm's world (where residency rules) it's ok to steal if I say so.
It's ok to lay off, cut budgets, and cancel contracts if it won't affect my friends.

O'RAHMA WHERE ARTH THOU AXE FALLETH NEXT?

If they do not care enough about the homeless to do this for free then why should we care about the homeless?

budgeted for 100k is not the same as 100k salary, budgeted money included benefits. but still, that's probably something like 75k salary for a job that probably isn't exactly requiring much skill

I'm guessing that the $2.4 million includes benefits and it's not unusual in the business world for the amount of benefits to equal the wages being paid.

I mean a person making $50K for example -- by the time you add social security or pension, insurance, etc... that's another $50K in benefits being saved when they are fired.

Oh, you'll get lots of sympathy here after making that asinine comment.
By the way, it's police, not polece.

Judging them by what they do on their lunch break isn't really accurate or appropriate, now is it?

And you wouldn't have a clue what the police in a district do or don't do. I doubt we ever saw you at a domestic, a burglary call, a beating or a fire, but you don't hear us saying we do more in a day than YOU ever did. Hmmm, well, on second thought...

Just look what the hordes of "protesters" did in other cities. They come not to express their opinions but to raise hell and feel the rush that comes from causing major chaos.

The Rahmster has not been hiring police, so he must be planning to RENT every available copy in he country and have the Feds run the printing presses to pay for it.

If downtown goes up in flames the insurance costs will be enormous and be passed on to all of us.

What will also happen is the West and South will also g up in flames and looting when the honor students see what is happening and don't want to miss out on the fun.

The Mounted Unit is usually very effective when handling a spontaneous disorganized crowd.
The "protesters" for G-8, and don't forget NATO, will OC spray the police horses and throw marbles under their hooves.

Stay safe, Just imagine what will happen when (We pray to God) Obama looses the election in 2012.
