Fire Fifty-Four Fire Fighters?

We suppose that's one way to balance the budget, but it seems a little short sighted:
  • Chicago’s Inspector General is recommending the termination of 54 firefighters assigned to the Fire Department’s scandal-scarred Fire Prevention Bureau for allegedly falsifying mileage used to reimburse them for driving their personal vehicles to inspections.

The alleged fraud cost Chicago taxpayers more than $100,000 in 2009 alone, but has been going on for years, the sources said.

Confronted with evidence from GPS-equipped cell phones that have tracked several firefighters’ movements since a 2007 scandal, sources said the firefighters have acknowledged padding their mileage expenses, in some cases for their entire careers.

GPS is everywhere. To do this even knowing you had a GPS phone was incredibly silly.

I was talking to a few friends that are in the know about this and they said that there were people that are desk workers in the FPB that were taking the mileage money allowed too. Also a guy that didn't even have a car was collecting. And when they would be off on furlough instead of taking a pro-rated amount they would put in for the entire amount.

Well maybe this will take the heat off the CPD until someone else screws up.

They "stole" they should be fired. There is no excuse for stealing. "But", it has been going on for years is no defense. You are the ones, the 54, who were caught stealing. Would you allow a firefighter into your home if you knew they stole something while on duty? Would you trust them with your home, your business, your possesions, your life? The "54" had an opportunity to enrich themselves at your expense,at tax payers expense, can they ever be trusted again? No.

Dump 'em. The City is already forced to hire back a bunch of black candidates as firefighters already. This way they won't further overtax the city budget. Legally firing the mopes clears the way for some new hires.
Turning all that 'inspection' bullshit to the bldg. dept. is a good idea anyway. No point in two different city agencies duplicating the work, it's a luxury the city can't afford anymore.

In the meantime, Greg HINZ at Crains Chicago Business writes that

Maggie Daley's charity got a 6.5 million city contract 4 days before Mayor Daley left office

AND

Ray Orozco, the last chief of staff (and former Fire Chief) to former Mayor Richard M. Daley, has landed himself a nice new job: a newly created, $185,000-a-year position with the charity run by Mr. Daley's wife, Maggie Daley.

FURTHER

The charity since 2007 regularly has received $6.5 million about a year from the city, they say. The money was included in the budget, they add, and it just so happens that the contract guaranteeing this year's funding went into effect in the final days of Mr. Daley's tenure.

This is the same group of "firefighters" that were fired a few years back for accepting cash for doing inspections on the weekend. They all sued and eventually got their jobs back before. This time, the city wisened up and just let them go.

If you don't know, people assigned to the Bureau aren't doing firefighting work. They are hiding there and just doing inspections instead of doing the work that they were hired to do.

I say good riddance. The city's better off without these leeches.

Speaking of open government where's the GPS reports for the ex-mayors cars and the alderman's cars?

I want an on-line map that shows where they are going -- blowing the taxpayers money on luxury B.S. to inflate their egos.

I think that we should have a detailed itemized list of accounting showing what each aldermen is spending that $70,000 dollars of taxpayers expense account money on too!!

Let's go Rahm.

Open government baby. Put the cities books on-line so we can see where the money is going. Putting everyone wages on-line was a nice first step, now follow it up! Follow it up! Yours too!

Close those ward offices that are draining the coffers. Shared cubicles, mobile offices are good enough. We don't need to be providing mansions and castles in the slums surrounded by Praetorian guards for these people to work in ..these are alderman, not royalty. The three-one-one center is doing most of their work what do we need 50 of the for anyway?

The city functioned just fine many years ago when we first hit our current population level and we had far less aldermen. Cut the fat, get rid of this bloated city council.

What you don't know about this:
GPS had nothing to do with this case.
This investigation began, because a F/1 wanted to
rat out her captain - who never left the office and took a mileage check every month.

The highest pay out of mileage was 350. Now, figure in two tanks of gas each week, parking expenses, maintenance, insurance and the daily wear and tear on the vehicle - the cost doesn't begin to cover the expenses.

Why choose only 2009 to investigate? And, why
wasn't the "Clout Heavy Public Education Section" which is full of "paramedic bosses" included??

$11 Million for Ald. Burke's Police Security: FOX Chicago, BGA Investigation

By Dane Placko, FOX Chicago News, and the Better Government Association

Chicago - For nearly 30 years, one of the best-kept secrets in Chicago has been just how much it costs to protect Ald. Ed Burke (14th). But a FOX Chicago News/Better Government Association investigation has revealed the price tag: $595,682 in just 2009 alone, adding up to an estimated $11 million since Burke was given the security detail back in 1983.

Here's the breakdown: four full-time officers making $150,000, $147,000, $140,000, and $132,000 in 2009, plus a part-timer who made $25,000. Those figures do not include health or pension benefits. Since each person's base salary is between $90,000 to $100,000/year, the figures show these police officers are making a ton of overtime.

The numbers were released in response to a lawsuit filed by the BGA.

"I don't think I've ever seen annual salaries at this level for police officers. These individuals were putting in an extraordinary amount of overtime, and as a result the numbers really add up," said BGA Executive Director Andy Shaw. "These are astonishing figures. It's an awful lot of money to protect one alderman."

Last month, Mayor Rahm Emanuel ordered an overhaul of security details for public officials. Burke's five officers will soon go back to the streets, and be replaced by a pair of retired officers. But Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) said even that perk needs to be questioned.

"I don't know what kind of compromise he reached with the mayor, so I would reiterate to him in this 600-million dollar hole that we have, every available dollar has to be looked at, and this is one that we need to look at," Waguespack said.

Critics said the police detail may have been warranted in the 1980s when Burke was a key player in the racially charged Council Wars, but now it seems like an expensive ego-stroke.

"It's probably a very intoxicating thing to be picked up every morning, protected by armed cops who go with you everywhere. It says you're an important individual," Shaw said.

Every athletic team should ask the FOP to buy their uniforms including basketball, baseball, soccer, cricket and squash teams.

However, some of the offenders stated that they have been doing this forever and the above figure is only for 2009.

Averaging here around 3700 miles each, or about 15 miles a day in cheating averaged out for each. 7 or 8 bucks. Not to trivialize this at all. Not to compare this to Burke's body gurards, or Daley's bullshit. But I would hate to lose a plum job like that one for the price of a lunch at Mc Donald's.

If The Daley Crime Family can steal $millions and walk away then why are we going to fire these fire dept. folks. Give them a just punishment...restitution and some time off.

I don't have a dog in this fight... but think about the reality. Maybe 75% of FFs are in their houses 24 hours a day, and can't leave: Period. Would love to have $1.00 for every mile CPD has driven out of district for
personal convenience. Especially
"unmarked".
Bottom line is Rahm wants both
departments to shrink.

Once again we see the double standard. Coppers have been indicted and federally prosecuted for taking bribes that were less than a thousand dollars. Remember the funeral home scandals of the 1980's. The amount of money taken has never discouraged a U.S. Attorney with political ambitions.
If these had been coppers, they'd be on trial at the Dirksen building.

WRT : "The city functioned just fine many years ago when we first hit our current population level and we had far less aldermen. Cut the fat, get rid of this bloated city council."

I agree we need fewer alderman, but we have had 50 since the ealry 1900's.

===============

Can you site your source?

This census ward map of 1900 shows just 35 wards.

http://www.alookatcook.com/1900/1900ChgoCtymp.htm

as does this ward map of 1920.

http://www.alookatcook.com/1920/1920_ward_map.htm

If wasn't until the '30's that I see fifty wards in the city.

and population wise ....

--clip--

(Newser) – Chicago's population fell 6.9% during the decade that ended in 2010, leaving it with fewer people than lived there in 1920. The US Census Bureau reports a population of 2,695,598 people, just under the 2.7 million that were reported nearly a century ago, the Wall Street Journal reports. The recession is likely to blame for a significant migration to the suburbs and the South; even so, Chicago is expected to remain the third-largest city in the nation behind New York and Los Angeles.

http://www.newser.com/story/112177/chicagos-population-falls-below-1920-levels-2010-census.html

=======

With that said and considering all the automation and communications and other technology of the day you can't tell me that we even need 35 aldermen like we had back 100 years ago.

This is b.s. bloated political clout that does not do a thing to serve the taxpayers.

Compare Chicago to the top ten cities. It's a waste that we can no longer afford.

How is this different from a CPD officer taking a uniform allowance and never spending a dime of that money on uniforms??
There is a 400 pound blue shirt I know that has one shirt and one pair of pants that never get washed during his 4-day work week!!
GROSS!

It's totally different you moron.

There's your fraud. Rambho wants to Balance the budget, start by eliminating the overbloated bureaucracy. These Gold Stars are killing the pensions as well

For the moron writing about the uniform allowance.
Several years ago, the city tried to cut the allowance. It was pointed out that the allowance is not just for purchasing new item, but maintaiining and also the cleaning of the uniform. It does not matter if you have them comercially cleaned or your spouse does them at home. This also covers the cost of soap, shoe polish, pens, watches, and the dozens of other things you buy for work.

Firemen on the whole, have too much time on their hands. A 40 hr. workweek would straighten out many of them, who get in trouble simply because they dont have enough to do. Also it should save the Taxpayers some money, as most of the CFD's work is paramedic in nature.

Ray Orozco, the last chief of staff (and former Fire Chief) to former Mayor Richard M. Daley, has landed himself a nice new job: a newly created, $185,000-a-year position with the charity run by Mr. Daley's wife, Maggie Daley.

The gift that keeps on giving.

How the fuck is anyone who works for a charitable organization allowed to make a salary of $185k? Thats some major unethical shit. Hope he rots in hell.

AUDIT FOP!

good point , assign firefighters to 12 hr shifts , no one should be paid to sleep , workout , run a business , cutting boards or pipe for side jobs in back of firehouse.
I would rather have a firefighter or paramedic repond that wasn't just woke from a sound sleep .
Isn't that dangerous to climb ladders , enter burning building after you just woke up .
close some fire houses and
cfd will save alot of money , do you really need a captain to supervise a lieutenant and 4 firefighters , seems top heavy .

People are instructed on their first day to take the maximum mileage allowance in the Fire Prevention Bureau so they have enough money to keep their cars running. They have to use their own cars and pay for their own gas, the union should have made this a fixed rate stipend instead of falsifying mileage receipts to have enough money to keep their private vehicles running so they can do their work.
