Back on Google?

Lots of advice and explanations and even a visit from Google themselves checking out what may have gone on a week or two ago.

If you search for "second city cop" on Google now, we appear in the top spot once again. We have no idea what happened. One day, we were on their results pages, the next day we had disappeared. We checked the various settings and altered a few as people advised and we'll see what appears and doesn't over the next few days.

Here's the thing - we never changed those settings in the first place. We've spent six years doing this, built up a decent following and created a fan base. This isn't some "flash in the pan" endeavor - our numbers have steadily risen every year and we've relied on word of mouth and other websites to grow, not gimmicks or plants or "google-bombing." We, with the help of each of our readers and commentators, built this place. Why would anyone, cop, citizen, media member or Google employee think we'd change a thing? That would be stupid to mess with what's worked for us here for six years. Maybe a glitch of some sort, but a deliberate action on our part? That would be beyond stupid.

We've taken a few other precautions as well. But thanks to everyone who e-mailed links, suggestions, hints, clues, and wrote to the media and Google themselves. We'll see how this shakes out.

Off topic, but as a citizen, please let me offer my sincerest thanks to whoever made the decision to increase police presence in Hegewisch. It is not going unnoticed. We still have our challenges here and there's a lot of work that remains, but this is a godsend. Keep it up. The objective is to make our neighborhood UNSAFE for the criminal Section 8 element. I can't speak for northsiders, but the citizens here in Hegewisch are 100% behind you.

If that was you, Superintendant, I still think you're a gigantic asshat because of your anti gun rights speech at Sabina, but at least you're conscious enough to do the job that needs to be done.

And now some news thats very important unlike Ozzie and choppers with big guns!
Has anyone even bothered to see whats going on at the Police board?
There are like 40 cases and I mean termination cases in line . Was there today and popped in to see what was up. Couldnt believe my eyes!
WTF Macarthy? So you just rubber stamped everything that was moved along by Weisel? Thought you were for the working copper? Had our backs I think you put it?
Guess you re-thought your position!
Good Luck guys/gals over there!

Just open a new window or tab in your browser and type in --

http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/

Now bookmark it for next time.

And there you are, without going through any search engines.

Well guess what?

Yahoo was caught censoring any email that had the words "Occupy Wall Street" in it, you know that ongoing NYC protest.

Do a search on youtube for "yahoo censoring" and watch all the videos of people that had done screen captures of emails that they were trying to send. Yahoo blamed their spam email filters..

Anyways...we noticed that your robots.txt looks normal now -- even the default sitemap statement is back in it like it should be.

SGT. 2130
"Here the thing-we never changed those settings in the first place" Rahm was behind it with help from the CIA, NSA and DHS. To creat a ghost in the machine virus to silences his critic from talking about his administration in public or questioning his method of solving the city problems.

Don't worry SCC help was on the way. Charlie Chan was flying in from Honolulu today to take on the case. He was informed that the Daley and Venecko Crime Families might be involved in this Google mystery. Now Det. Chan can go back to less impoetant crime solving. Keep up the great work SCC!!!

>> we supported Georgia's execution of a convicted cop killer - is this an example of Google's chilling effect on those of a more conservative bent <<

There's nothing "conservative" about executing a convicted killer. It's not conservative, it's not liberal, it's not libertarian....it's just common sense.

I'm not one who is inclined to wear a tin-foil cap or be one so gullible as to subscribe to conspiricy theroies. I think something isn't making sense here for two reasons:

1). Evidently, SCC changed nothing & all the sudden, poof, you don't get a SCC hit doing a Google search (and if it WAS a "setting" issue, why did SCC hits come up on other search sites?).

2) There is a history of Google censoring USA based bloggers.

See this Regarding an AZ blogger:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/
blogger/thread?tid=164b7aa43cfacad4&hl=en

I can attest the AZ, Libertarian, Catholic, Lesbian, recovering Lawyer as she called herself never posted extreamly offensive content on her blog.

Her blog was one on the best I've read. It was scrubbed by Google circa 2009.

Her blog was conservative and right-minded and while some may have had a problem with her being a furr trader, I could care less. Her political and current event posts were brilliant. Too bad they are gone.

In the case of SCC, this whole thing shows it's significance and how much this blog means to its' readers.

I think the emails and calls on the part of many SCC readers caused such a shit-storm that whatever it was, was no more.

Less popular conservative bloggers deserve the same attention from Google.

I've worked with computers, indirectly, for almost 30 years. It is a waste of time for anyone to try and find the cause of a very infrequent occurrence. Get it fixed, forget it and next time look under the reefer for Occam's razor.

Google is constantly tinkering with the magic algorithm that orders search hits. Odd stuff happens when they do; it has happened to me and no one I know is out to suppress my on-line collection of architectural photos. That is a more Occam-like explanation than The Great Evil Liberal Conspiracy.

Glad you are back on top though.

Off topic...in today's Sun-times, Fran Spielman writes about the Rahm Tax and quotes Emmanuel as saying, "...I’m gonna make sure that the bureaucracy is not where we put our resources. It’s in the classrooms. It’s in the early childhood centers. It’s on the police beat that they’ll be walking.”

Rahm can walk the beat if he wants to, I'm not. Especially not in the shitty blocks or neighborhoods. I'll turn off of the engine for a few minutes and observe from a safe location. There, I policed the beat and reduced my carbon footprint. Oh, I also won't be chasing anytime soon. That sort of activity guzzles gas. I'll do my part to help the city lower its operating costs.

The article also states that CPD has an 8 to 1 ratio of supervisors to rank-and-file. As has been said before, CPD is top heavy.

and

We haven't bashed the union in months. In fact, we don't recall bashing this administration even once except when the guy in charge decided a call to take the lead was some sort of personal affront because it would have actually taken some balls to accomplish. But hey, live happily in your little fantasy world. Asshat.

Big tragedy there; their non-emergency calls are going to some officer's desk, instead of to the main switchboard. If that's their department's biggest problem, they're all good.

A real cop said... Are you fucking kidding me they have been doing this for 3 years at least , this is a back door layoff. They need to cut the budget ... they will off as many people as they can get a way with. The p.o.s police board is a rubber stamp, they never let a small thing like evidence get in the way of a non- clouted one getting the axe for what the clouted routinely get promoted for.
Daley the crook installed every last one of the garbage board members.
