Deer Crossing

  • The chances of hitting a deer in Illinois with your car are 1 in 250.

The odds in Illinois actually rank it near the bottom, at 32nd among states

Neighboring Wisconsin is seventh on the list at 1 in 97. The odds in Indiana are 1 in 178, which places it 25th, and in Iowa 1 in 77, good enough for second place.

The odds are probably better in Chicago where the deer population is out of control and wildlife management is non-existent. The number of deer starving to death in the local forest preserves is ridiculous.

On the plus side, deer season starts shortly. Time to stock the freezer.

I ride the bike trails in the Cal-Sag woods regularly and have noticed a sharp decline in deer population over the last two years. Even the Coyotes are getting rarer.
But hearing gunshots is getting more common.

The odds of hitting a shithead that is crossing the street against the light- in Chicago- is 1 in 1, if you are not careful.

The sad thing is, the savage mentality of walking into traffic and not caring has spread to all facets of society- seeing as how everyone does it.

I was passing the forest preserves last summer and a deer ran out and plowed into the side of my car. The car was undrivable. The deer rolled over and limped back into the woods. A friend of mine was struck by two deer and caused over 10 grand in damage to her car. Watch yourself inpassing the forest preserves early in the morning and just before sunset ( twilight). They are most active and can cause a lot of damage or even death to the occupants of the car.

I disagree that wildlife management is nonexistant. Sharp shooters are used to cull the deer herds in CCFP - it just isn't advertised because people would protest. Besides, it's not deer season yet.

The harvest is donated to food pantries and soup kitchens.

My source - a CCFP employee.

I Killed Bambi dead with my truck a few years back.

With the weather cooling and the days growing shorter, they are already on the move. Interesting thing is that they seem more tame these days and are less likely to panic when a car comes down the road.

Anyway, be extra cautious, particularly an hour or so after dark.

I suggest more "Deer Crossing" signs be posted on streets/avenues that pass through Forest Preserve areas, so that the deer know exactly where to safely cross the street. Ha-ha!

Don't ever swerve to avoid a deer just brake! Often you do more damage hitting another car or going into a ditch than the damage that would be done by the deer. I also think that with most insurance companies hitting a deer won't get you cancelled.

My aunt hit a deer some years ago and totaled a big old Olds. A few years later she hit a cow and had to pay for it. Being it was in Wis. I think it's some religious thing.

People are hunting in the forest preserves illegally, usualy in the evenings. You can hear the gunshots at night, and this is not coming from any govt. sponsored culling operation.
